      Thanks man ! My camera skills and ability to explain the work seem to be getting better over the years, but I still don’t like facing the camera when I talk, lol ! The magic of video editing is awesome though…all of the normal fussing, wrench throwing, and looking for my 10mm socket gets edited out 🤣🤣🤣. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

    final got mine off! what a journey that was. for those without a rattle gun who want to know how much forces to apply, I would say I had to tighten the puller centre bolt with almost a much force as it took to loosen the centre nut. that is I used a 1 metre long bar and has to lean a good amount of body weight into it.

      Good to know 👍. Yep some are very stubborn indeed. Glad you got it off there finally and all the best ! Steve

      Thanks man ! Yep, it does take some extra steps when just pulling the flywheel to avoid having to pull the cam gear and move the timing chain. Using the drill bits to line everything back up makes things easier to set it all back the way it should be so the split gear hole is accessible. Without opening the split gear, pins and springs go flying out when the flywheel is pulled…not the end of the world and they can be easily put back, but I just hate looking all over the floor and inside the motor for them Lol! All the best ! Steve

    Uncle Steve, to maintain the oil pump, do I need to remove the flywheel?

      Hello, yes, you would need to remove the flywheel to remove the oil pump to clean the pickup screen or check for wear 👍

    What kind of oil do I use to put back into it and how much?

      Hey ! Most of these older bikes call for 20W-40 or 20W-50 it seems. I use the Valvoline 20W-50 with Zinc in all of my Viragos as it seems to make the rockers run a bit more quiet. I’m not sure the actual amount though as I just fill them until the sight glass on the left side cover near the bottom is 3/4 to almost full in the sight glass when the bike is on the center stand (or holding it level on the wheels).

    thanks for the video. I rattled and tapped with hammer several times and it still won't budge. any other ideas?

    • @StevesDIYs
      @StevesDIYs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man 👍. Some of them are really hard to get to pop off for sure. In the video you can see how much torque I had to put in it prior to hitting the puller with a hammer to finally get it to pop free. Just be sure the nut on the crank shaft is backed up at least enough to allow you to freely spin the washer behind it. When you hit the puller with the hammer, once it pops, the washer will no longer spin freely so you’ll know it popped free.

    Saw a guy run three bolts in and pop off by tightening around a circle. Safe?

      Hey man ! Not sure for other models, but for the 1st Gens, if you just ran bolts into the holes and tightened them, you would be pressing against the gear that turns the split gear for the timing chain I believe. If the flywheel was really tight, the risk would be that the smaller gear would get damaged from the bolts. If it wasn’t wedged on very tight in the shaft taper, it might pop off with no damage.

    What would require you to remove the flywheel. Good video!

      Thanks man ! About the only time someone would need to remove the flywheel would be for a rebuild, if the oil pump chain has gotten too much slack in it over the years, or if the oil pump needed replacing or the pickup screen cleaned (recommended if the bike has a lot of miles on it). Other than that, there’s nothing really behind it that needs any maintenance.
