Chiang Rai HOT-SPOT for Northern Thai Street Food ('Naem' 'Khao Soi' 'Sai Oua' 'Moo Yang' + 'Mok')

- Here are FIVE classic dishes you need to be on the lookout for, the next time you are heading for Northern Thailand!! We have all of MY favorites here today, but I would love to know about YOUR favorites as well - do you have any memories to share? Or even a few dreamy items you can't wait to have when you're here??

Now, for the names and ingredients!
Sai Oua, the all-time champ around here when it comes to street grill master-work, this is Northern Thailand's happiest sausage. When combined with sticky rice, in a to-go bag with some fresh herbs and entire chili peppers, you are in for a happy walk indeed.
Nam Prik Noom, the 'lightest' of all the northern chili mashes, but this one still packs some heat! The green chilies are roasted, bringing tons of warmth as well as pairing with tons of flavor in the roasted eggplant, garlic, and pungent shallots. A great combo with sticky rice (and of course, with any nearby crispy fried *BONUS 'Kaep Moo' cracklings as well!)
Moo Yang, some grilled pork that is just blowing my mind today, I can't believe the wonderful similarities here between the North East favorite flavors and the North - the dipping sauce, the grilling char, even the thin strip-style cuts, just perfect for dunking in fiery 'Jim Jaew' sauce, this dish has it all!
Mok Naem, the Northern Thailand mountain Lunchbox, a grilled banana leaf that ends up basically steaming whatevers insides (and the BEST insides are this beautiful mix of pork parts like skin, snout, and belly).
Last but not least, Khao Soi, a recipe that is dearly loved from here all the way to Northern Laos, to Northern Myanmar (and even Southern China up to Pakistan!!). These curry noodles will stick in your mind from basically the very first bite of your first bowl here.

If you eat parsley it's good for the stomach also. I eat chilies for break brunch and supper and with a snack like sliced pepperoni and tomatoes and cheese and some kind of chili i have, love chilies it cures what ales you and will clear sinuses.

My favorite with the leaves as a plate to hold the food. It adds such a colorful happiness to no matter what food is placed on top of it. The broth looks soul warming. I think I like the dry peppers as suppose to the wetter peppers on the table. I think food brings more people together and supports different people more than anything else in the world. Great video Joel and I always love the drone shots.

Vonn, I love that one, thank you for this message and for always getting so stoked with me on these helpful and also very traditional recipes, these are pretty basic versions but honestly I would say I prefer these more approachable recipes instead of fancy stuff. This is where the flavor is AT, 😆 for sure ♥️

Hi Joel and beautiful Li ❤️. Always a pleasure to wake up to a new video. Since I rarely watch television TH-cam is my entertainment. Haven't been able to read books lately since our light in the bedroom is terrible. I absolutely love eggplant and pork cracklings. Eggplants are one of my favourite vegetables. I also put lemon, lime and Chilli on almost everything. Hot and sour is a favourite. You had so many delicious looking dishes. Love it! Busy pickling my peppadew peppers. Looks like I have more than last year. Roughly 60 kgs. I weighed them last year but not this time. Just know I have much more. I've pickled some savoury with vinegar, garlic, paprika, whole peppercorns and salt and a few jars of sweet peppadews with vinegar, sugar, whole cloves, all spice and star anise. I made a delicious pork fillet curry last night with orange, purple and yellow carrots, onions, tomato, fresh ginger and garlic and some freshly squeezed coconut milk. We also had it with sticky rice to change it up a bit. Indian curry with Chinese rice 🤣. It worked and was delicious. I also wanted to update everyone that isn't FB friends with Poetstud that he is out of ICU and getting well. Should be out of hospital in a few days. Many blessings and hugs to everyone 🤗🙏. What is the difference between heat and flavour? Both you and Mark overdo the chilli's and act like this is normal. I have been to Thailand many times and I thought the idea for the uninitiated was to add chilis slowly.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy supercomputer presumably uses binary, so the binary "10" is "2" in base 10 notation. So, magically, our first 4 lottery numbers are: 2, 10, 42, and 52.

It looks so good, I haven’t eaten real Thai food since Covid started, we have some local Thai restaurants here in Sweden, but they don’t make the food so spicy and good.
Joel, The 'Wheelie' coffee or Yok Lor has a layer (a ring or wheel perhaps?) evaporated milk on top of 'O-Liang' which is sweet black iced coffee. The idea is that you can have the best of both worlds and vary the flavours, milkiness or black along the way and customise your own level of milkiness until they all mixed up in the end. Otherwise you could just order iced coffee 'Ga-fae-yen' (sweetened with condensed milk). These drinks predate refrigerator, hence the canned dairy products!

As for us, if it’s God’s will for us to serve Thai believers, we would love to come to Thailand to help pastors and local church leaders to use the Bible to disciple in Truth in the near future. First, I need to learn Thai. Do you have any recommendations for foreigners? My husband is Thai but his Thai is limited since he came to America at a young age. Thanks Joel. Funny thing, I won't be there soon, but I can look around and see if anyone serves those dishes in Fresno. So many different ethnic groups to choose from. There is even an Ethiopian restaurant not too far from here.

Hi Joel. I have visited Thailand twice before, although, a whole lot further south. Chiang Mai is the place that I want to visit next and 3 of the dishes that you have in this video are 3 of the dishes that I want to visit. My question is, there are 2 types of northern sausages that I know of, 1 that includes rice in the filling, and 1 that does not. Can you shed a little light on the differences and the different names that they have?

Hope you have a blast planning the next visit, I know you are in for a great amount of food. The information on the sausage is something you are going to find for yourself here in the north but also, yes I can give a little detail at first. The one “with the rice in the filling” is not from the north, it is from the north east. The north east has basically three main types, whereas the north only has this one (Sai-ua), the spiced herbal sausage.
I went to Chaingrai last week but it's busy I could'n find khaosoi so sad .

Mark just did a Thai trip in Los Angeles saying it was the best authentic Thai food in a Thai district. Just look for the video, it is on you tube in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Made my mouth water.

It is the first place were the picture looks like the Khao Soy that you have had. Plus, the menu is large. Tell me if this is a place you would like to visit if you could fly anywhere.
