Gotta keep in the gas. Stopping when you just start to get momentum kills it's progress. I'm pretty sure the Maverick would make it and it's definitely top on my list now. Thanks for the review

It will not. That's what the Ford Ranger is for. AWD can't "force" a wheel to spin if it is really stuck.

Momentum is a cheap crutch for offroading. It can work but it's also a fanastic way to break and prematurely wear driveline and chassis components. The hardest but best method for offroading like this is slow and steady.

At about the 29 minute mark the system starts adapting to figure out that slippery terrain you were attempting. But Everytime it was starting to work, you hit the brake. I think you would've made it up all of the way. But I know it was a risk. Good video!

I agree with most comments here! Once the system is figuring out what’s going on, you brake. My 2.0 AWD has done many trails with out a problem. Most of those times you have to hold the gas and let the intelligent AWD figure it out.

I really hope they bring this thing to Europe. We don't have any of the Ford F-series trucks here because they are wider than a standard highway lane. We do have the Ranger which is a nice truck but it's still bigger than a European parking spot so you can't go shopping with it or take it in the city where it simply won't fit. Except he would have slammed the body on something in the approach angle or break over for sure.
Watching the unibody flex whenever a wheel lifted off the ground, lacking skid plates and protection from the middle back, and the lack of 4LO and lockers make this the meanest gravel driveway vehicle at the shopping mall. Sorry, I'll give it more credit - at The Home Depot or Lowe's.

    • @stinkycheese804

@@keithgibbons92 Except no, sliding on mud is not a "slam", it's a glide. Meanest gravel driveway vehicle at shopping mall is nonsense. It can handle far worse than was thrown at it but that doesn't mean a more fit vehicle couldn't handle even more. There was nothing in the video that a mere FWD car couldn't handle, any FWD car from any era not something with traction control, as long as it had appropriate tires.

I've been looking at Toyota Tacoma TRD but I may have to go take a look at one of these new trucks because I like the size. I hope Ford will offer a 4-door Access Cab version of this for those who would rather have a longer bed vs seating for four. An option for 16" wheels instead of 17" or 18" would also be nice. A locking diff option and full time all wheel drive would be nice too. And hopefully the aftermarket will offer a lift kit soon. Some of the trails I come across are way more intense than in this video.

I think the Maverick would have made it over the last hill, if the truck had some way to "lock" the rear diff like the Bronco Sport. Too bad it's not currently an option. Also too bad that you can't get the FX4 package with the steel wheels that come with XL trucks. Aluminum wheels have a tendency to shatter when you take a decent hit from a rock, whereas steel tends to deform. I know from personal experience.

Great video, question about that last section though... I noticed that you were backing off pretty early, basically as soon as things started slipping. Yeah if he would of maintained speed earlier he should of been able to roll right over instead of stopping half way and trying to inch forward and only backing up a foot to try again, you can't really get any momentum when you're already fighting gravity. I'm sure it's worse than it looks on here too. If that was truly it's limitations I'll definitely be sticking with my Forester lol.

Great video content! You provide the “real” world off-road use ability. I have always used BFG KO2 on my Jeep JKU and Porsche Cayenne; mainly due to their more aggressive tread pattern and strong sidewalls. I suspect the KO2’s would have given you the traction needed. However I ALWAYS air down when off-roading for the additional traction and better ride comfort. It would have been interesting to see how well the Maverick FX4 would have done aired down.
Nevertheless this video has shown that waiting for the Tremor with its “locking” rear differential is the way to go.
    Thanks, great review.

Nice to see. I live NE of Tonasket at 4000 feet 8 miles from Canada. Most of the driving you did up until the slide is the type of driving I would have. Glad to know the Maverick will do that. Now it just needs to be built and show up. I live 5.5 miles back on gravel roads.

Ryan, I had a 2017 Ford Explorer with essentialy the same drivetrain as your Maverick. I did have a larger engine (3.5 V6 NA). I experienced the same kind of Off-road performance as you did. The least little bit of mud or mild hill climbing would always defeat it. I kept it for a year and traded it in on a Tacoma Off Road and never looked back. That type of full time 4 wheel drive with no locker and no low range will always fail when it runs into the slightest difficulty.

AWDs with open differentials have major issues in tougher terrain. You need at least like a limited slip differential in the rear. . .

It’s a neat little truck and certainly fills a niche that was finally abandoned when Ford stopped making the original Ranger. I saw my first one in person the other day, and the Missus thinks it’s adorable. They’ll probably sell like hotcakes. But while it handled most of the forest service road if you spend enough time in the woods you will encounter spots like that and the Maverick seemed to fail.

Happy to see another one of your Maverick videos and I hope to see more. I have the same color FX4 Maverick (Though mines an XLT) with Toyo AT3s on it. I don't plan on doing anything more than what you're doing here.
This comment section is falling victim to how difficult it is to show how tough a section of trail is on camera. You lose that sense of depth you have in person. I think you could've done that last bit with some Jeremy Clarkson brute force, but it would be foolish and dangerous with that drop off to the left.
What other Aftermarket do you see yourself adding to it?

  • @ianj4389
    @ianj4389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Kind of surprised you got stuck in that one spot on the trail. I did a similar trail and that part wouldn't have been a problem in the least bit for the Bronco Sport First Edition and presumably the Badlands with Badlands package. If there was a badlands equivalent package on this Maverick I feel like it would be an absolute beast for a pickup of its size and class.

Last winter I tested a similar Bronco Sport Launch Edition with a "loving rear Diff" crawl mode and with the 3PMSF-stamped tires on a similar road in snow. It got stuck in a situation I think a Forester would have had no issues with. Very similar to the one this video demonstrates. A slight uphill section with a slippery surface. This video now has confirmed in my mind that the Ford G.O.A.T system is simply not that good of an AWD setup.

I know being in front of a computer screen is much different than being there in person, but here we go.
I own a 2009 Escape with a very similar AWD system. As such, this was extremely frustrating to watch. You kept giving up RIGHT as the truck was starting to adapt and send power where it was needed. Lockers are great and all, but AWD is much more capable than people give it credit for. It just takes an entirely different driving style, and wheel slip is going to be an accepted fact. You just have to commit and let the computer figure it out.

Every review channel does the exact same thing, they purposely let off the throttle to make it look as if every non-4x4 will never make it over anything but a paved road. No surprise that this channel does the same.

@@chrishowe2935 I have, my frustration isn't specifically with this vehicle. I do appreciate the reviews he gives, but I really can't stand the lack of knowledge on how the AWD systems actually work. I cringe on behalf of the engineers who designed them in almost every video.

Great review, again! I love your format of real world driving on pavement and typical offroad conditions. I wonder what a selectable compound low gear would cost in an automatic transmission rather than a two speed transfer case. Maybe a compound low gear and locking differential can be offered as options in the future.
