As many of you know, I made video after video trying to figure out the clipping and popping issue with the Hero 5, and had no luck figuring it out. I even spent a long time on a phone call with GoPro, and they said it was a faulty audio adapter! I thought as the old mic I was using was perfect with the Hero 4, that it couldn't be the mic! Alas, I was wrong.
I tried for awhile to figure it out. I really wanted to use the Hero 5 Black b/c of the video stabilization. Really made a difference in the quality of the vids! But the terrible audio quality made the videos unwatchable, to the point where I even had to delete a couple of motovlogs that had good content. Wasteful! So I reverted back to the Hero 4 Silver. No video stabilization, but the video was good enough without it, and the audio quality was top notch. The GoPro Hero 5 took a backseat, until...
YOU GUYS! As per recommendation from many of you subscribers, you recommended I watch a video that went over a mic that would work with the Hero 5 Black. So I checked out the vid, bought the mic immediately, installed it asap, and have been testing it since for a few weeks.
The results? It's AWEsome! No popping, no clipping, very crisp and clean audio. Overall, a really quality motovlogging mic! And since it's even smaller than the previous Sony mic, I can tuck it tighter against the cheek pad in my modular helmet, which = less breathing noise. Win!

The mic sounds great! I think I need to pick one of those up myself...
I used a piece of velcro to stick the brick to my helmet= the velcro is weak, but it sticks to the brick pretty good!

I soved the problem With the adapter not sticking... wrap it in normal tape to make it stick to whatever you want, i used doublesided tape. I can actualy make a video about it ;-)

I mounted my mic adapter with one zip tie on the 90° mounting bracket for the GoPro. I kind of like that setup because I'm not worried that it might disconnect from the Velcro. I'm still new to this, just did my setup this week. I'm getting (what I think is) a lot of breathing noise from the Giant Squid. It's mounted about where you've got yours. Do you think using the wind screens you recommended would fix that?

I am SO jealous as I am having the exact issues as descibed with my Hero5 and while I would love to get the giant squid as my solution I am coming up pretty empty as to where to get it in Canada unless I am willing to pay...get this...250.00 CAD on Amazon.ca ...and we are not able to order thru .com sadly. My search continues and with any luck I will find one here somewhere...out there...BAH!!! Super glad you got a solution tho!!

I use hero5 for moto vlog but I can not eliminate the wind and the noise, even with the adapter and the microphone inside the helmet, I'm angry with this drug.

I'm glad you made this video. I got the same cam, same sony mic, and I even have the same HJC helmet. Do you know if you can yell in the mic without any issues? I talk loud as it is so the sony mic pops a bit too much.

BLOCKHEAD I actually got the mic today. I immediately went out and started yelling at it on the freeway. I still got the snare...windscreen....or foam that came with it and I was actually pretty happy with it. I haven't tested it to ArsonRides specifications, but I'm sure it will do just fine. I got the Giant Squid mic because of you. Works like a charm, I just miss the stereo capability of the ECM-CS3. But I have the Hero 5 Black and was having the same clipping/popping issue as you. But the mono sound just isn't as good as stereo. What a dilemma.
The sound you're recording isn't as good as what the ECM-CS3 was? Do you have the GoPro settings set to record in stereo? I know it's not 'really' stereo but mine's still recording 2 even waveforms left and right (still mono, GoPro just processes it as stereo.) To note as well, vocals, even in big song productions like on the radio and such, is usually always recorded or processed in mono, since you want the voice to be centered in the mix.
I have been looking for a solution also. I went with the drift microphone and my experience has been it only has audio on Left speaker. ( cause it's not a stereo mic. It's mono) Is this one stereo ? Also what audio setting do you use? Thanks
I am using my Hero3 with SENA Bluetooth Backpack and a SENA Momentum Helmet. Works great!
What up Blockhead, I'm thinking of getting this mic. I just got a Hero 6 and I'm starting to record my rides. I really don't want to talk in my vids. Just need something to block out the wind noise but pick up engine noise and exhaust sound. Was going to just place the mic in my jacket or something. Do you think this microphone would be good for that?

I had the exact same issue. Switched to hero 5 black and my sony ECMCS3 produced a bunch of popping and cracking.

I just watched a vid today of a guy with the sony mic and hero5 and his audio had no cracking etc. Ive also seen another vid that said it really is down to mic placement. if you keep the sony mic under a cheek cushion or dead cat the mic it should be great with sony and hero5.
I got the same mic and same gopro adapter and it will work when I hook it up but once I end the video and then start a new one it stops working. It happens with my session too.
I have a RPHA-11 also but I can't find a good mount for my GoPro. What type of mount are you using?
Tried a cheap mic with a mono adapter and i still get the popping ( albeit of a different frequency), can't find the giant squid one in Germany atm so i'm stuck with no audio whilst out riding, if i still had my 4 black i'd probably stay with that .

how do you connect the adapter? the door on the go pro would have to be broken off no way to connect adapter with the go pro holder
tried everything with the mic i have now and i can't get it near this quality of sound while riding. gonna order me your set up finally and do away with my mic :(

Totally interested 'till saw the date-- 2017. This needs an update. Please update this video, B'Head. I'm about to start the process of adding camera and mike (may do some vlogging, maybe, perhaps), so would really appreciate an update on best camera/microphone setup.

Florida born and raised here. I love summer bro.....I don't know why but the heat doesn't bother me. I live in NY right now and it's too cold. In two months I'm moving to Arizona....It's going to be amazing.....and I'll probably burn to death.

Ok, Microphone sounds great dude! I got a Tascam DR-05 last week and recorded a motocamping trip. Working on those vids now. I had a epic mortal battle with a fist sized dragonfly as well! Heh.

What mounts exactly are you using to mount the GoPro to your helmet ?
I used the GoPro mount and arm extensions, customized by dremel'ing them out, but you can use these mounts that should be much easier and faster than my way - amzn.to/2p63OjV

Hi bought the same set as you but my audio does not record when I hit the record botten only works when I switch the camera on by the mode botten the press record is that the way it works

only does not do audio if I press the record button from switched off but if I press the mode button then press the record button then it's fine
Never heard of that before, mine works with the one button on / push to record. I'd double check your audio settings. Also make sure your camera is updated to the latest version firmware wise. If neither of those work, try resetting it. Best of luck!
I totally have the same issue! Couldn't find any info about it online, so it's weirdly reassuring to find out that someone else is having the same problem. It used to work fine, but I think it started after I updated the firmware. I tried factory reset, but nothing has worked so I have just been switching the camera on rather than using the instant record feature(which I really liked when it was working).
