    Loved watching your video. I started backpacking in 1967. Grew up in SoCal and hiked all over the Sierra’s. Tuolumne Meadows is so beautiful and always loved passing through there. Your video just brings me back there. Have been living in Colorado since 1984, but the High Sierras has a very special place in my mind

    I want to congratulate you and thank you for your excellent video, extremely well done ! And you filmed the video professionally, with no showing your face all the time, minimal talk, and pleasant background music. Your video is one of the best I have viewed.

    Beautiful video! It is so nice to watch a video where the photographer is not constantly filming his face while describing his surroundings. Perfect music and blend of trail scenery, nature and wildlife, and commentary. Thanks to your video, I know where my next backpacking trip will be!

    Well done. Great footage and the music choice was very fitting. I thank you for reviving some fond memories of mine. My best friend and I made this hike back in the summer of 1968 when we were 16 (we continued for another 3 days ending in Yosemite Valley). In spite of all the years that have passed, I still vividly recall some of the views you shared. Age combined with two very bad knees will almost certainly preclude me from ever seeing this area again firsthand, so I thank you for allowing me to experience this (at least vicariously) through your adventure. BTW, I have forwarded this to my hiking companion from so long ago. I'm sure he will enjoy it at least as much as I did. I will look forward to seeing your other recording efforts. Many thanks again!

      Raymond, I'm 75 and started hiking again after a hiatus of 3 years due to personal problems. No, I don't run up the trails any more but I get to the destination in good time. I used to pass everyone on the trails but now they pass me, ROFL. BTW, 6 years ago I did Mt. Whitney in one day, bad left knee and all.

      Those days are pretty much over for me, at least until I give in and get the worse of my two bad knees replaced. I might be able to swing it then. I truly loved that entire area. Congratulations on your being able to continue those trips. I genuinely envy you!

    I like the fact that she's wearing low cut shoes. When I started backpacking I wore the "required" 5 lb leather boots with thick soles. After a couple of years of that torture I went to lite weight nylon boots and that was much less tiring. I then tried some low cut hiking shoes and never went back to boots. I even used the shoes with a +50 lb pack and had zero problems.

    • @XJarhead360
      @XJarhead360 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary, there is no big deal with wearing low cut hiking boots, that is unless you sustain a sprained or broken ankle. You've been lucky as many hikers have.

    This is a very well done video! Thank you for sharing. I think your footage of the four fish included all brook trout, I did not see a Golden trout in the bunch, unless the fish on the left looks different at another angle. Brook trout tend to eat all the other species in lakes, as they are quite the predators. The guidebooks don't mention Goldens that far north, if memory serves me correctly.

    • @ColemanOutdoors

      I know how bad you want them to be Goldens too. Can check my most recent upload for some Goldens if you'd like. 😁

    Hello Sheety33. Name here is John. I just wanted to tell you how much I really enjoyed your video! :D Very nicely done!! I am really ill-equipped to take on a hike like that, but kudos to both of you for undertaking that hike. Up until about 7-8 years ago, I had been coming up to Mammoth Lakes in the summertime almost ever year, with family and/or friends. We usually do the condo rental thing, and I have never camped at mammoth. I love to fish up there, bike, and do the shorter hikes, like Rainbow Falls. I had no idea of the beauty along that John Muir trail. I cannot believe the cluster of the numerous, beautiful lakes along the way. The video footage is awesome! I really like how you labeled each lake and mile marker along the way. It is interesting because the drive from Mammoth to Yosemite takes forever, the route 395/120 route. Interesting to see that it is about 39-40 miles from Devil's Postpile to Yosemite. Seems like a pretty direct route. I always like making trip via car down to Reds Meadow, doing the short hike to the Postpile, the hike to Rainbow, and fishing Starkweather. I really need to get back up to Mammoth soon. Keep making and posting your great videos :) I really enjoyed this :)

      Thank you! Thinking of doing this 2019.
      Just a few questions if I may pick your mind:
      What month did you go and how cold were the coldest nights? (If you don't know that: What rating did your sleeping bag have and was that good enough?)
      With this permit, you can hike all the way to the end of the JMT in Yosemite Valley, right?

    • @wannabetowasabe
      @wannabetowasabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No one answered your question so I will. Yes, you only need one permit for the entire trip. Here is a link to additional information about how to obtain a wilderness permit:
      www.fs.usda.gov/main/inyo/passes-permits/recreation
      I'm not sure what month these folks did this hike, although it looks like late July or early August. 2016 was a drought year so it is difficult to tell as snow melted early that year. Nights can be variable as far as temperature. It could be in the low 40's or could dip to the mid 20's, depending on weather and elevation. If a cold front comes through in the summer temperatures can drop to that lower range. In the early 1990's it snowed 6-10" above 9,000 - 9,500 in August, but in 37 years of living in both Bridgeport and Mammoth Lakes, I only saw this once. If the summer monsoon is bringing in daily rains it can hail strongly at the elevations involved on this route. I pack a 20 degree rated sleeping bag, a ragg wool sweater and full Gore-Tex with me whenever I hike in the Sierra, along with a stocking cap and mittens. Your extra socks, if you use thicker wool socks with liners, make excellent mittens. The only thing cotton I wear is a t shirt, everything else is some type of synthetic or wool. Cotton is known as "the death garment" among rangers and search and rescue personnel.
      In heavy snow years this stage of melt shown in this video may not be reached until late August. Stream crossings in such a year tend to be a little more challenging, but there aren't any major ones without a bridge along this route. You can shorten this trip a bit by starting at the Agnew trailhead and picking up the JMT on the Shadow Lake Trail. Mosquitoes can be quite nasty on this route, especially following above average winters.
      YARTS stands for "Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System." Here is their link:

    Very enjoyable, thank you! Just wondering: what dates you were there and what camera you used to get such gorgeous shots?

      We did this hike from July 16th to the 18th...covered a lot of ground in a fairly short amount of time! I used a Canon T4i and iPhone 6 for filming and pictures.

    Thank you for another great video. Where is a good place to go to get more info regarding logistics, permits etc? I'd love to replicate this hike. Thanks Adam

      Glad you enjoyed it! Believe it or not, I found a lot of information here on TH-cam regarding logistics, trails and permit information. For permit information go here:
      www.fs.usda.gov/main/inyo/passes-permits
      We used the Yart service to get back to Mammoth from Yosemite and information can be found here (the yart was incredibly inexpensive too!):
      yarts.com/
      To book the actual permit for this hike you will simply go to recreation.gov and select the "North of Devils Postpile" trail permit. This permit is very hard to acquire due to it's popularity.
      Hope this helps!
