Thanks for the memories. I did this walk back around 1995 with my teenage son, wife and a good friend, and it still lives very vividly in my memory. Only one difference. Back then I had a compass around my neck, and the pages from Roper's book and a topo in my hand much of the way. Well done.

Amazing! One question! what trail head did you need a permit for to begin at DEvil's PP ? Really appreciated this video!

We started our hike on 9/17/18 at the Beck Lake Trailhead. The Beck Lake Trail is accessed via the overlapping Pacific Crest and John Muir trails from the Devils Postpile Trailhead. You need permits and the number available per day are limited. They are available in Lone Pine or Mammoth Ranger Stns. We got our permits the day before at Lone Pine without problems. In mid summer, I suspect it will be harder. We put a car at Tuolumne Meadows so we could get back to Mammoth after the hike but there is a seasonal bus service (check on dates). Remember, this is NOT a novice hike, competent hikers only, take a rescue beacon if possible (no cell service) and have at least one person who is good at route finding.

Great video, Jack! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago while watching PCT thru hikes. My family has been visiting Hunewill Ranch in Bridgeport for decades, so I’m familiar with the area. I was inspired by your video of Matterhorn Peak, and hope to attempt it myself next summer in June/July. Do you think my trail runner shoes will be okay or do you advise stiffer boots?

Barb and I climbed it in trail runners without any probs. If you have any ankle problems, (like easily twisting an ankle) you should probably go with a higher boot. Get an early start and know how to get to the trailhead in advance (but you probably already know that). It's a fun hike and a great accomplishment as a day hike!
