      I also like this, and at the early midpoint of the battle, you get to understand that the CVN commander in RSR was a bit of a dolt. There had to be wargames about deception and multiple strike groups. You don't burn all your f-14's at the first radar signal.

    Irony is, in Red Storm Rising, USS Nimitz took 2 missiles and stayed afloat, just like she did here. This really was a great reenactment of that battle, with the bombers converging from all points of the compass, with exactly the same result for the carrier.

      lol spoiler alert for the first comment we see...I'm going to get into this video but it's eye opening after the previous fleet actions we've seen how the refueling of the F14's matter and it's also apparent that 7+ regiments of backfires are going to be a test for a CBG. I'm a broken record but it seems to me that the cold war's military-industrial complex politics lead to a lack of finesse in how these fleet actions would have played out. That is, the USN's strategy is all expensive hardware dependent and, unless there was a whole doctrine that they've kept hidden for decades, there should have been massive decoy operations for the fleet. The soviet missiles should've been presented with 20-40 false carrier radar targets, from everything from smaller ships driving side by side, floating inflatables, and helicopters with radar transponders (if the badgers could launch missiles to pretend they're planes in RSR why couldn't the USN?). I don't know what the 80's tech world knew about radar absorbing materials but for the cost of saving a carrier, I'd put a stripe of radar goo down the middle to cut a nimitz's cross section into two ships.
      Instead, from what we've seen in previous videos, if the soviets get lucky on launch, rail launched SAMs can't handle it.

      @@dfsdude Please keep the limitations of DCS in mind, dude. It's a damn good sim but it's far from RL.

    • @dfsdude
      @dfsdude 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it's true, the AIF14's can't do anything right, eh? And the F-18's are kinda useless. The more humans flying, the better the outcome. And we don't see the backfires getting mechanical difficulties (1000 miles at mach 2?) or running out of fuel. But my questions were really about what DCS shows us what maybe the 80's era wargames the navy played couldn't show the brass. That maybe a full on 8+ regiment attack is razor's edge of survival with current strategy. @@exidy-yt

      @@dfsdude I would argue that the most unrealistic issuse here is that out of all those Kh-22 launched, all of them got near the target. Even the Soviets says on their official document that this missile has a 300m CEP which means it will miss at least 50% of the time when you fire it at a stationary target, much less a moving and evading carrier.

    The commentary between Matrix and Kortana at around 33:00, when Matrix said something about exiting serviceable aircraft... I laughed out loud!! I'm an old Jarhead, but my job in the Corps was a parachute rigger. Everyone who isn't Airborne in the Army or the Marines always had the quote on deck, "Why would anyone ever leave a completely serviceable aircraft?!". Haha!!! Matrix, you sir made my evening, I felt like I was in my old unit for a moment hearing you say that!! I spent a good deal of my time enlisted jumping out of all sorts of aircraft, and during my time in I jumped out of pretty much everything the US was operating that dropped troops, and even several jumps with allied military units out of airframes they were operating. As all Airborne schools at my time were Army schools, I became a Jumpmaster with the 82nd at Bragg. I say all this to circle back to a moment I remember distinctly. Of all the aircraft I've tossed myself out of, the good old C-130 was by far the most frequented. One time though, I was riding TAD (temporary additional duty) on a C-130 when I was just a boot Lance Corporal, and I remember the weather being shit as we were coming in for approach, and the crew chief looked at me and asked, "First time flying?", and I replied, "No, first time landing." . As person who has fallen out of the sky many times on purpose, I somehow always feel more comfortable coming back to earth under a canopy!! Sorry for rambling about my old stuff, that moment of dialogue just struck a particular chord with this old Jarhead Jumpmaster!!

    I vote that you guys (and gals) try to get something like this once a month. That should leave enough time for Kortana to be able to build and test the scenarios without there being a huge time crunch to get it all done.
    Also, no offense to Cap, but having him as a full time cameraman for these sscenarios rather than being a pilot seems almost perfect to me.
    I would also like to maybe see a bit more of a detailed TacView debrief as well, but i think that what we got out of this for a first time run through was fantastic.

    The Soviets did have RORSATs but it's trivial for a carrier group to simply change direction whilst those pass overhead. At 30+ knots a carrier group can cover a lot of distance in the time between periods of RORSAT coverage: 4 hours is over 200km.
    Add in EMCON conditions, and it would be non-trivial to find a carrier group that doesn't want to be found...

    Just for fun, how about the reverse scenario? A Kuznetsov (or to compensate, more than one) with Su-33 and equivalent escort, with NATO attacking with B-1s in the place of the TU-22M and B-52s in place of Tu-95M. All in whatever proportion you think will make it "equivalent", just reverse, to this scenario. Great job by the way!

    • @92HazelMocha
      @92HazelMocha 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really a way to have a "reverse" scenario. Kuznetsof never sailed for the soviets, and Russian and soviet doctrine are entirely different than NATO doctrines. Soviet/Russian naval doctrine is centered around anti-ship capabilities not anti-aircraft like NATO doctrine, similarly there's not a fleet of NATO anti-ship ground based aircraft like the soviets had.

    Kudos to Kortana on a great scenario. Cap's scenarios are mostly testing equipment not tactics.(kinda like taking two matchbox cars and smashing them together) This had a much greater tactical feel incorporating staggered waves of red flights, multiple avenues of approach, deception. My only quibble is that (and I am assuming a wartime footing) I would have expected a second E2 airborne. Great mission overall. Highlights the need for ED to keep working on the AI!

    Nato and USN doctrine at the time was that NO less than 4 carriers in a large group could fight and survive in the North Atlantic. Add 3 more carriers to this scenario, and that'll be a much more realistic scenario, as cool as this one was. Also, a Soviet regiment of Naval aviation (Backfires) was 21 to 30ish aircraft, 11 regiments would be 200 to 300 Backfires.

    IDEAS- (and I'm not a Gamer)- 1) Could a single, modern, non-nuke-tipped CARRIER GROUP have shut-down Germany in WWII? 2) Could a single ABRAMS TANK have defeated the Civil War Confederacy?

    • @KortanaDCS
      @KortanaDCS 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So for 1, assuming that they had enough fuel and ordnance, a single modern carrier group would have almost certainly been a decisive game changer. Not so sure on number 2. While a tank could have easily turned the tide of a battle, it is hard to imagine that they wouldn't have eventually found a way to disable it.

    • @888jackflash
      @888jackflash 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, for #1 vs Germany WWII, it would be interesting how much effect a modern non-nuked carrier group would have had.. I imagine they could have sent up an escorted AWACS, identified where Hitler & boys were hanging out, then decimated the high command in Berlin, for starters. For the Civil War scenario, (of which I am a buff), the main problem for the Union forces was breaking through Lee's lines. If an Abrams (or other tank) could have punched a solid hole through the Confederate lines say at Fredricksburg or Antietam, the Union could have used it's numeric superiority and stormed Richmond. It came close a number of times to doing that, (bad command leadership often spoiled it). 1860's ordinance would have had a hard time taking out an Abrams.. at least until the Union exploited the major breach.@@KortanaDCS

    • @888jackflash
      @888jackflash 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have thought about this. At Gettysburg, a single Abrams, with one tank of fuel and a 50-round mix of anti-personnel rounds and some HE, could have bee-lined straight across the fields to Lee's headquarters and potentially taken him out, along with a lot of the Rebel high command. Turning back again, it could have then quickly decimated a good deal of the artillery lines, then turned west again back down the Emmitsburg Road and destroyed most of the critical supply lines and wagons. The Union forces could have easily capitalized on such a dismaying breakthrough enough to overwhelm the Confederates, quite likely once and for all. This is what I think about at night! (-:

Considering how entertaining/difficult you've made them in the past! Yeah shout out to CH for essentially all the weapons systems/Mods! Just really like the idea, think it's certainly different, and I kno your the best person to make it happen!

    The F-14 had an outstanding Air to Ground capability. The F-14 got retired due to age and being so maintenance intensive.

    That was pretty dang great, guys! I would definitely think the navy would have 2 Hawkeyes up along the threat vectors (north and ene)

    Red Storm Rising is a good book. They left too many stories hanging though, like no wrap up on the first Space Ace.

    Terrific video guys and gals! KORTANA always puts 💯% into her setups and she doesn't miss a single detail! Looking for your guys next "Carrier Command" video where you said you were going to use 2 different human groups and the computer. AND,,,,,,....,.
    KORTANA, my heart yearns for you! Your voice sends stimuli throughout my body like Grumpniks alcohol and Simba's candy! Come to me my dear and I will record your voice for ALL TO HEAR YOU AS I DO!
    My first poem! Hope I don't cause you guys to be demonetized!😊 Wish I had a gaming computer so I could practice and play and maybe EVENTUALLY become a "GRIM REAPER"!

    So I'm guessing we are simulating that both Iceland and Norway is taken out of action, and UK is somehow suppressed? Cause having played this scenario countless times in Harpoon, I can't see any other option. If UK was still in, the Low Eastern group is not viable, but the rest is tricky but doable with Norway and Iceland occupied/pacified.
    Good run, though :)

    I'd love to see a completely blind scenario. Have someone outside of the group put everything together, give you guys just the basics - era what you're flying/on and roughly where in the world you are and go. So today you'd have known it's the 80's you're on an american carrier in the middle of the atlantic and the cold war has gone hot. See how that goes.

    This was good. Something like this again with the 64 and the F15E. Would be pretty cool.

    Great to see Kortana back (hopefully on the regular.) Does she have a military or defence professional background, if she's happy to disclose? Certainly you can get that level of knowledge as an amateur, but she seems proficient and practiced with it, like Matrix.
    Either way, this was a great scenario. BZ to all involved.

    if 500mile engagements sound like a nightmare, imagine 1000 mile engagements against ultra long range ASBMs such as DF21ds and air launched YJ21s.

    Why doesn't the SU 24 have any fighter escort support.

    • @KortanaDCS
      @KortanaDCS 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the Su-24's were just a stand in for older missiles being used as decoys. I had them programmed to just fly straight ahead on full burner until they ran out of fuel.
