My Stainless ruger 10 22 takedown. has many higher cap mags and extra ammo is light compared to bigger rounds. A well made AK is a good substitute for an AR. Though you have to be an AK aficionado to determine what that is.
In restrictive gun law states I recommend a KelTec RDB-C. It’s a semi auto bull pup design that uses .223/.556 ammo but without the “evil” pistol grip (the “C” stands for “California”). It comes with 10 round magazines. But can use standard military 30 round mags if you can get them. It has the benefit of being short and handy but still has a full length barrel for maximum range/lethality. It is a KelTec gun though, so you roll the dice on the company’s inconsistent QA/QC.
A good runner up is a Ruger Mini-14. It is over priced, not terribly accurate or dependable (unless you get a good one). But it’s also a .223/.556 rifle and can get the job done under 200 meters.
Finally, if vintage is all you got, the M1 Garand or M1 Carbine shouldn’t be dismissed. They still have strengths. The Garand is almost too powerful and will punch through many things better than any .556. Out in the country being able to hit a target at 600 meters with iron sights is still a big deal. The M1 Carbine is almost too light but can compete with the AK in close up urban fights. Israeli 2nd line security forces armed with M1 Carbines have taken down Palestinian terrorists armed with AKs.

Well an ar is really the only logical choice if you're in the states because you can be sure that mags and parts will be plentiful. As far as handguns 9mm is also the obvious choice as is sig because of army but I'd personally go with glock just because it's the one gun that probably has even more parts/mags out there than sig.

Given your logic, I'd ditch the AR15 and get an IWI X95 (NATO 5.56). It has all the power and performance of an AR15, but it's 26.25" OAL (artificially pushed over SBR length with a very thick butt pad) is much, much shorter with full ballistic performance not possible with AR pistols (ideal for CQB situations). And here's something you can't do with your AR15: you can shoot it easily one handed. Plus it's made by world renowned IWI, whose reputation for high quality dependable weapons is well established. It's only downside is it ain't cheap. But quality rarely is.

I can see where an AR-15 is probably the most versatile and most common ammo type for a rifle. Gives you capacity, range, ability to customize. Though I shot an AR-15 recently, I do not own one, so I would have to go with my CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 with red dot and iron sights with 35 & 20 round mags in 9mm as 9mm ammo likely to be available as well. If I went with a lever action it would be my Rossi R92 in .45 Colt which has 10 rounds, its my lightese lever action and has reasonable firepower for hunting if needed, and very decent power as a defensive weapon. The down side would be large rounds means less you might carry and not a very common caliber nowadays. Thanks as always for getting us thinking Greg! Once again Merry Christmas!

(If you buy one chambered in .223 you shouldn't fire 5.56 through it because of the higher chamber pressure of the 5.56) So it's easy to find ammo for, even if you had to scavenge in a SHTF situation.

Like an old Marine once told me "a pistol is only a tool to get you to a rifle". I don't believe you can go wrong with an AR15. They're reliable and everything from ammo, mags and parts are prevalent. I used to be in the camp that went straight for an AR. I want everyone to know that what I'm going to say is just from my own personal experiences before I get torn apart in the comments. I took all available information from region to my own sense of practicality into account and came to the conclusion that the 7.62x39 cartridge was the only most ideal candidate for a "all hells broke loose" situation. I then went on to what rifle would be best suited in that caliber specific for me. I went with the 2nd generation Galil Ace. Like I said, for myself this makes the most sense. I still love and shoot my ARs so I'm not being biased, I'm just thinking of my own survival

I generally agree with this good advice. If anyone is interested, I have thought it out and 7.62x39 is my first line ammo with 5.56 / 233 backing it up. I own two ARs (556 & 7.62) along with two military grade import AK pattern rifles (7.62). I prefer both platforms w/ ability to shoot both calibers. I lack an AK in 5.56. I shoot about 200 rounds per month and try to keep around 4000 rounds stacked at any given time (heavy on 7.62).

    • @kevinx9225

If we are gonna touch up on legal rifles I would probably aim for a lever action. While these are costly and archaic by design, it'll get past the idiots on the left since it's not "black & scary". And you do have the opportunity to get in higher capacity just bear in mind it correlates with longer barrel length.

Lets look at another scenario, lets say, for whatever reason, you lose the use of one of your hands, you fall, dislocate a shoulder, break your forearm, wrist, hand injury, etc.
Can you operate at least one of your firearms with one hand?
Put your strong hand in your pocket,or grab your belt behind your back, etc.
See if you can operate your firearm with your weak hand, can you reload, work the action, etc.
Military pilots were issued revolvers in case on an injury during parachuting, crash landing, etc. so they could operate their sidearm with one hand if need be.

If you can stay near your home, any gun you're comfortable with will do for defense (except small calibers like 22). But if you have to move, and have limited carrying capacity, a gun in more common caliber (9mm, .223, 5.56) that you will be able to replenish in your travels would be better. A gun without ammo is a club.

Interesting Question Greg...My choice at this time would be a 30 caliber carbine or another platform that handles that round. My go-to indoor range allows up to that caliber and there would be a better opportunity to PRACTICE/TRAIN. Have trained with the AR-15 many years ago before I retired but don't know of an outdoor facility in our metro that would be appropriate for that purpose. The 30 cal. doesn't get respect in some circles but earned it's chops in at least 2 or 3 wars.
