I love your industrial rides. I lived in Somerville, Mass before it was yuppified and did a lot of that type of riding. I enjoyed finding all sorts of shortcuts through factory parking lots and narrow alleys.
Never knew Youngstown had beautiful trails like that. I lived in Cleveland for years but moving back from Florida this summer. Definitely going to check out that trail.
Thanks Tim - I did just a little work in the Youngstown area. Too many ravaged rust belt cities. It seems like that industrial collapse was a terrific waste of industrial and human resources. Your talk even prompted me to read the Wikipedia article on Youngstown. Both the dialogue and the visuals in your video were great.
Fascinating stuff really. There are some interesting YT videos too. Growing up in the rust belt after the collapse it’s what we know and our visual language. People talk about the smoke filled sky and the burnt rubber smell here - I only knew the massive abandoned factories. All the histories like to spread the blame around including unions - but it was mostly greed and poor management decisions. In Akron it mostly came down to not retooling the factories to make steel belted radials. Then finally selling off, getting taken over or moving to the non-union south. Capitalism at its worst.
Love your channel Tim. I don’t live in the rust belt but it still is very interesting to me. As the planet warms I still say this region is going to get a “do over” during the next 50 years or so.
I lived in Youngstown from 2010-2014 while in college and it is wild to see the growth/revitalization in downtown even in that span of time. The Youngstown Business Incubator (YBI) has brought in a good bit of tech into the city, especially in the 3D printing space. Great video!
Yeah, ...It's interesting how places change with time. I'm originally from a tiny town in central OH. In the late 1800's it had passenger rail service, mills, some small factories, hotels, etc. Now the railroad is a bike path ( not a bad thing! ) and it's mainly farms and service job stuff...
Thanks for your commentary on the areas where you ride. I enjoy hearing about the history and vibe about the place. It’s what sets your channel apart I think.
well, I’m taking care of my dad who has alzheimer’s so I can’t get out on my bike as much as I’d like. Your videos “take me away” a little bit and help me look forward to when I’ll have more time to ride.
I thought of you and your love for cool old bikes. I am visiting Ljubljana Slovenia and I have never seen so many cool older city bikes. There was a bike factory here ROG bikes that produced all the bikes for Yugoslavia
Y'all hit pretty much ever good spot in Youngstown hahaha, I lived and rode there for over 8 years so I'm pretty flabbergasted that everything in the video was awesome. I've worked noble and oaks, both gold tier bars. Draughts is and will always be may favorite tho, but theres a good chunk of good food beer and trails there. Check out the green way if ur trying to get some miles in.
Awesome. We’ve ridden the Green Way after stopping in Warren then camping At Pymatuning. It’s weird how much more you can understand a place by riding a bike there!
I've ridden those places many times when I was living in Girard. I see you went through Wick and Crandall parks. There is some grav grav that I've ridden on the southeast side from the center st. Bridge by the tracks and it comes out by the water plant in Struthers.
Ah yeah - I think we were looking at that from the bridge. I don’t think I’ve spent much time in Girard but almost all of the other suburbs. When I mentioned always going to Youngstown it was mostly the suburbs then into town for the shows. A lot on the south side- Poland, Boardman, Canfield - but I do remember being in Niles too.
Guilty of being from Youngstown but not living there. Haven't lived there since around 94 but I still go back to see family. Great representation of what it's become. House I grew up in is gone, looks a lot like those streets you rode through. I also grew up going to Mill Creek and learned to drive there. Definitely went to shows at Cedars/Penguin Pub back in the day too. If you guys do organize a ride there I'd considering trekking from CT for that, need to see friends and family anyway.
We played at Cedars a lot over the years. Last time I believe was our last show in 2007. Also the Nyabinghi(sic?). I don’t blame anyone for leaving but also always impressed by the people who do the hard work to stay and try to stabilize it. It’s a wild place no doubt.
Absolutely wild. Lots of YT vids about the place. Very interesting (often depressing) history. There congressmen when I was growing up was so openly corrupt- but they loved him. I asked my Youngstown buddy if “Youngstown Tune-Up” (slang for a car bomb) was offensive for the title - he said “lol - in Youngstown!? We wear that like a badge of honor”.
Cyc ward is the way to go. I miss it out there alot. In Cali now. Chico actually and I liked riding Youngstown just as much as chico. Keep ya posted on when I'm back and well ride for sure. Any questions just ask.
Akron might be lucky with large university, also Kent State close by .... Good educated work force ready to be reaped .... Youngstown State might be much smaller?
YSU isn’t proportionally any smaller. It’s even the number one employer in the city now. Doing some more research Youngstown civil society really was replaced by the mob as doctors and lawyers left. The city accepted it for a long time.
Your voice is so calming! Have you always narrated, or did you develop your voiceover skills? A behind-the-scenes look at your process would be great! Keep on ridin' :D
Thanks! No - I only started narrating when the channel grew. I felt like I couldn’t just keep showing the same kind of footage without some context. I appreciate that! I have been thinking of a “how I make videos” video. Cheers!
Interesting. I did look up the Springsteen song for an IG story and a lot of docs came up - I'll have to go down the YT rabbit hole soon. My buddy's friend was also on trial in mob cases - but I've never dug to deep for obvious reasons....
It really did! The city on the other hand definitely does not. Ha -I don’t know how many people know it anymore but “Youngstown Tune Up” became slang for car bombings. Our band made some pretty mod-punk in the studio . We made a racket in the clubs though…. th-cam.com/video/SgCAZOCPABo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0qdQnWgxG4O4L8lR
Lots to love about this vlog: Great content, great commentary. I played a gig in Detroit- almost derelict and on a corner where the neighbourhood was pretty derelict. Must have been the late 80s or very early 90s. This was a strong reminder. Loved your band video...a young, shaggy Paul Simenon?! 😊 Punk rock and photography? You may find something in common here: th-cam.com/video/_H5Aegy4IWo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=66Tn0ZzZZMMSLrqF PS I have cycled the Hebridean Way all the way up to Harris.
Funny story, I was in a band and played a show at the Nyabinghi way back in the day. After soundcheck we went for a walk to a local playground. On our way back we were shot at (nobody was hurt). We told the doorman, he said “yeah, that’ll happen.”

Thanks Tim, loved the history of Youngstown narration.
Youre making miss the midwest. I liked biking there
Sounds like a good place to explore. Awesome video.

@@TimFitzwater Yes and it had a ripple effect beyond the area. Mines closed and towns emptied out. Have a good one.

I think so too. Not quite so prone to natural disasters and droughts. Too many cloudy days kind of sucks though.

Love how you share a bit of history from point of view yet defer to others who might know more. Also enjoy you love of urban gravel.
Thank you for your videos. Makes me wanna ride. Love your commentary and community you’ve built!
Nice route, almost like a ghost town in places 👍 Definitely looks like a great place to explore.

@@TimFitzwater Bellville. it's about 2hrs south of Cleveland off I-71

I've been through Sharon for sure.
There used to be a sweet skatepark there too
Thanks for your commentary on the areas where you ride. I enjoy hearing about the history and vibe about the place. It’s what sets your channel apart I think.
I’m always a nerd about places so I figure I might as well share some of it - other people know way more about actual bikes than I do….

Really like the video style with the narration laid over the top, linking the video clips together. Must steal some of that style if that's ok.

Thanks Tim. Ohio should hire you to promote your state , formally ? Always an education , and fun ! Be well .
Ha! Way more knowledgeable people doing way better work but I appreciate the sentiment!!!
That building that turned into a UHaul place was super nice. Wonder what it was before that? Train station?
It has always been one of my favorite Deco buildings in Ohio. It was actually a dairy plant. Operations were moved to Pitt in the late 60s.
