    I love how Columbo walks around a hospital with a cigar for the whole episode and no one tells him not to smoke! Even in the 1970's, smoking was not allowed in hospitals.

      I might be wrong but smoking wasn’t officially banned in hospitals until 1993

      @@jugganuat6440 In California, where this show is set, there were No Smoking signs in wards, waiting rooms, corridors, and operating theatres. I remember them quite clearly from when I lived there. Some hospitals allowed smoking on the grounds and in doctors' offices. It's pretty much mopping up these exceptions that was instituted in 1991 in California and 1993 elsewhere.

    Anytime the suspect tries to use authority over him: You just lost your badge my friend. I have no choice but to
    call your superiors. He gets offered a job at a lot more money. It just cements the guilt for him.
    The entitled people in these episodes are always (trying) to push him around. He puts up with it,
    to give them a false sense of security. He even said one time, when someone called his superior, the superior contacted him and
    said to keep going. You must have struck a nerve. Columbo is never in fear of losing his job, or being chastised by superiors. Because they
    know what he is doing, and he does it better than anyone else. One time a character says: They are sending their best man over. And then Columbo shows up all disheveled. They can't believe this is their best man.

      It actually explains a great deal. Columbo never gets any sleep and consistently explains how he never gets time off, needs coffee, and hasn't eaten since yesterday. He is constantly getting sent around to different cases because he is the police department's leading detective and never has time to look after himself, which is why he looks so disheveled.

So Spock would have been found out anyway

    • @mortengottschalck

      @johnfinnegan8474 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they would have done an autopsy if he died. That was the whole point of Columbo getting angry with Dr Mayfield, to drive home the point if his patient died there would have to be an autopsy done to see if it was dissolving suture that was the cause.

    • @eric0380
      @eric0380 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnfinnegan8474 right, but you would think dr. spock would have thought of that before using dissolving sutures. I guess spock thought he could rush the body to the morgue otherwise

    • @tabs3675

    I love Columbo, but I just need to say(obviously, not proudly), but here , just like in a huge amount of other shows, this thing about an intravenous drug user using the opposite arm to which they are predominant, is not scientific, type evidence. I am right handed, yet have injected in both arms hundreds of times, in fact, because of being right handed, and therefore stronger in my right arm, I have used my left hand to inject in my right arm more than I have in my left. I'm not sure whether that's because I'm very capable with my left arm/hand , or what, but sometimes (not in this, obviously), but in many other police shows (even, most incorrectly, true crime/murder shows), they sometimes state that 'oh, he couldn't have done that as he's right (or left) handed.
    That's what I want people to realise/know, when they hear about true life stuff, that it's generally easy for most people to inject into either arm.
    Just saying. Peace and love from London.

    Question: Has an operating room like this ever existed or is this just Hollywood fantasy? We see it in every TV show: The operating room with a glass roof for spectators to watch. I call BS. Doesn't exist. Never has existed. Never could exist. Nobody could ever watch a live surgery like that because it would be a major distraction to the doctors working below. Surgeries get recorded and shown on TV. They're not live theatre. In addition, hospitals don't have that kind of space to waste. You couldn't waste the area for a surgical viewing room because that space is better used for another operating room, patient room, etc.

    • @jonathancampbell5231
      @jonathancampbell5231 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They go back to the 16th century and yes, they are very real. There is a reason they are called operating "theatres".
      They are very rare today but they did exist, almost always in hospitals attached to a university of course. There wasn't really any way for students to learn about surgery prior to television after all, and even then the picture quality wouldn't always be great.
      You can still them in older universities and museums, even if they aren't used the same way anymore.
