To me, the wildcard in value is all of those basic lands with special art. It will be interesting to see what those settle at in price. Some SL lands are around $1 each, but many are $3-7 each.
@@MosesSuppose They wouldn't be $20 a piece if this Lair wasn't $150... Other comparable basics in Lairs haven't really surpassed $7-8. It's not necessary in the analysist IMO because their market price is artificially inflated because the Lair price is artificially inflated.
@@notapplicable6985 Ok. They like it. And they've demonstrated they'll pay about a maximum of $7-8 per basic land. Do you have evidence to back up your feelings that I'm wrong?
The 'charge the English more' thing is probably for two reasons. 1) because they can (biggest reason) and, 2) because Brexit - unit costs for things like importing onto the island and taxes have gone up quite a bit. I wouldn't be shocked if, on a per-unit basis, after all expenses Wizards isn't making the biggest margin on the US lairs (assuming they're produced and distributed in the US). Of course, that guess breaks down if they're locally produced in each market.
This was most likely recorded before the extra cards: 9 lives, and Yoshimaru were spoiled for the deck. Those reveals are actually why I bit the bullet and hit purchase, I was really on the fence until then.
Products like this are a big part of why I proxy everything now. I rarely play card games with other players IRL, so I cannot justify paying high prices for things I'll only get value out of once or twice. If they do a Secret Lair Deck for something I adore like Star Wars, Arcane (LoL), Marvel, etc. I will be extremely upset but not surprised.
Do you mean "dachshund"? (pronunciation probably close to "ducks hoend") I love them too, grew up with two of them in the house. Here in Germany we usually call them "Dackel", the term "Dachshund" you use literally translates to "badger dog" (probably because they're often used as hunting dogs that can follow prey such as badgers into the burrow). Your dogs are enormously cute, and there should be more dachshunds on Magic cards.
@PleasantKenobi just looked up the item description and it says that all the basics are the new art. I'll state here then, that all the forests are 1 art, all the mountains are another, and the same for the plains. 22x Foil Basic Lands with New Art
Logged in Monday to get one. It was already sold out. Upset about it and unhappy about it but not much I can do unless I want to spend more money to get it from a scalper and I don’t want it THAT badly.
I hate that the mana base was this bad, but I'll end up upgrading the deck anyway. Might as well upgrade the manabase for cheap, hell, might even add a couple of shocklands now that they're cheaper in my country.
I mean, I get you can't get fetches and shocks right out of the box, but at least the battlebond lands would be nice, or even the pain or slow lands... Even the Dr Who decks came with better lands.
I was going to wait until my next pay check to buy one (so Feb). I expected it to sell out, but not WITHIN SIX HOURS, with no email saying that it dropped. The deck is cool, the alt arts are nice...but the deck looks like it will play terribly. There's little interaction, little ramp, it looks like a deck I would have made when I was new to Magic if Rin and Seri was a commander then. I thought the land count in the Angels deck was bad but that deck actually PLAYS WELL. WotC absolutely bought hard into the theme to justify the price, and the fact that it was able to sell out in less than a day is a problem. If they're gonna push for it be pre-printed, they should have the ability to have it printed to order for at least two weeks after it sells out. Give the general population a chance.
Wizards has been trending this direction for the last several years, I've completely stopped purchasing sealed products, and will stay that way until things change pretty drastically back in favor of the run of the mill player.
My problem with wildly expensive pre-cons like this is that the appeal is all in the theme and flavoring, but the deck is usually kind of crap. I think if their going to make a deck like this it should be at the very least highly optimized. After I inevitably have to change out half of the cards for better options the deck will quickly lose a lot of the theme and flavoring. WotC is already absolutely taking the piss with the $150 price tag and limited printing, at least provide all of the cards necessary to a deck like this. I had this problem with the 40k decks as well; at a certain point when making changes to the deck it stops being a 40k deck because so many of the 40k cards are mediocre.
To start, I agree 100% that it SHOULDN'T be worth it to pay $150 for that product. The unfortunate part is that IF you bought it, and IF you bought 2, you would have been able to sell the 2nd copy on ebay today for $400 and got your deck for free. I did not do that, I think it's crummy that that is even a thing, but thing it is.
as a european. it was 165. also it it was in € and not $, which means its even more expensive. so yeah. no thanks. also, i already have a rin and seri deck. so i'll probably just try and find the sol ring, lands and tokens.
No one missed out. This was available for 6-8 hours at least with several weeks advance notification. People had time to save money. Unless they work jobs that do not give them any breaks at all, they had an opportunity to order. Yes, the limited print run idea is terrible, but everyone had a chance to order this if they wanted to.
Honestly these $150 secret lair commander decks have always felt waaaay overpriced to me, even though I really liked a couple of the artworks in some of them. And now that Secret Lairs are limited print instead of print to demand it's likely going to reduce the amount of them I buy too. Hasbro had better be careful, players can only stretch their budgets so far and the more they're forced to skip products they otherwise would have been interested in because of greedy pricing and too much being released the more comfortable they'll become just cutting their spending on the game altogether. Had more than a few friends stop buying cards for that exact reason.
As a US GW games player I need to bask for a moment in a Brit complaining about the cost difference just for being in a different country. Ok - basking done. Yeah its proper shite.
Another disappointing factor with these items is resale. A not insignificant number of buyers are just looking to turn a profit. There's always that divide between Magic players and Magic 'investors.'
The value proposition outside of draft is terrible in magic now. Boxes of literal cardboard that cost as much as a PlayStation. And they raised the price of draft.
As much as I would've liked to own this deck I couldn't warrant £150 for one deck. Especially when you can get all 4 ixalan or karlov manor decks for less.
Here's the thing, if the deck was printed on demand the deck would have never sold out. The other secret lairs that did sell out, the same, if they were print to demand they would have languished for the next two months. FOMO is a thing.
I didn't order this because my deck Reigning Cats & Dogs is better than this list already. I'm certainly not got to pay $150 to upgrade the art on my lands and a handful of cards plus two tokens. If I find singles for these at some point I may pick up the ones I want one at a time. Maybe I'll find a land pack that someone doesn't need to gouge for.
Even though I live in Germany, I'm soo glad i have an APO box to get secret lairs at dollar prices, and free shipping in most cases. If y'all know an American in Europe with an APO box, ask them to buy it for you 😅
I didnt buy this either because I am primarily a dog person and was disappointed with the lack of dogs. I do want to try and get the sol ring and the secret card Yoshimaru alt art. The annointed procession would be great too but will probably be to $$ for me to justify.
There are three secret lairs I've cared about, and i haven't managed to get my hands on any of them. Doctor Who: Regenerations, Walking Dead, Stranger Things. And you know what they all have in common at release that was the only way to get those cards. Hell you still cant get the walking dead ones. Wizards please at least release secret lairs in stores your online shop is and has always been a joke
Just monetarily the Angels Commander deck alt art cards are skyrocketing. Gisela is now approaching 100 USD. Rin & Seri are about 30$ and scarse, anointed being one of the alt art almost guarantees its value. Of course WotC could reprint them into oblivion and the price could crash.
Was quite confused by the way he pronounced it aswell😂. It's originally a german word (lit. translates as 'badger dog'), the proper pronunciation is Daks-hunt, with a as in car, u as in pull and emphasis on the first syllable.
Why do they just change the currency sign in front of the price when they release it in alternate markets? Because they can and people have paid it because of FOMO. I woke up at 4am here so I could get one. Including the not-free postage to Australia, it cost $270 in AUD. But then again I have been meaning to build a deck almost exactly like this, so I can just get this and take out the few cards I don't want in it and replace them. It's relatively economical in that way. At least it's not the local pricing on Warhammer, which is completely arbitrary.
Why do they just change the currency sign in front of the price when they release it in alternate markets? Answer: They dont. USA unlike every other western country doesn't include tax until you pay. So for them it's $149.99 + Tax on top. EU deck is actually €164.99 not €149.99
IMO the prices are set based on human psychology. The number 150 is the goal, not the buying power of that in your local currency. Which is kind of scummy in its own way.
No you didn’t miss out if you didn’t buy it you saved yourself a 150 bucks that you can put elsewhere. As well as exercising good impulse control not buying everything that gets put out. down the road they will release another “must buy product” that’s just how this works
you say it is not worth it but i have to disagree. buying it would have been very worth it. you could have bought it for 150£ and can probably sell it now for atleast 200£. with the profit you can buy anointed procession as a single. To me, the wildcard in value is all of those basic lands with special art. It will be interesting to see what those settle at in price. Some SL lands are around $1 each, but many are $3-7 each.
The basics are currently preselling for over $20 a piece. Definitely a weird move to not consider that in the analysis
@@MosesSuppose They wouldn't be $20 a piece if this Lair wasn't $150... Other comparable basics in Lairs haven't really surpassed $7-8. It's not necessary in the analysist IMO because their market price is artificially inflated because the Lair price is artificially inflated.
@@danontheinternetsI disagree with that since having the basic lands be on theme is something comander players like.
@@notapplicable6985 Ok. They like it. And they've demonstrated they'll pay about a maximum of $7-8 per basic land. Do you have evidence to back up your feelings that I'm wrong?
Wotc is like: heads we win, tails you lose
The 'charge the English more' thing is probably for two reasons. 1) because they can (biggest reason) and, 2) because Brexit - unit costs for things like importing onto the island and taxes have gone up quite a bit. I wouldn't be shocked if, on a per-unit basis, after all expenses Wizards isn't making the biggest margin on the US lairs (assuming they're produced and distributed in the US). Of course, that guess breaks down if they're locally produced in each market.
Oh, and your dooges are SUPER cute BTW 😊
They are! :)
This was most likely recorded before the extra cards: 9 lives, and Yoshimaru were spoiled for the deck. Those reveals are actually why I bit the bullet and hit purchase, I was really on the fence until then.
Where did you see 9 lives and Yoshimaru being in the deck? It's not on Wizard's own deck list.
@@Kingofnoodles It was spoiled in an EDHijinks video the same day as the deck release here on youtube
@@Kingofnoodles th-cam.com/video/SsaioLTgNtU/w-d-xo.html around the 48:00 mark
@@gsmastermike well, damn.
Great content as always. Loved seeing the dogs!
It was worth it to buy. I understand wanting more, but this was one of the best decks they have ever put out.
We need more Dachshund representation!!!
the basic lands are currently selling for 23-30$ per rn you're paying for the arts all the 5 double faced cards are 50+$
This is so dumb.
It should also be noted that all the basics are also alternate art
All of them? Only some are the nee Cat and Dog art - what is the alternative art on the others?
@PleasantKenobi just looked up the item description and it says that all the basics are the new art. I'll state here then, that all the forests are 1 art, all the mountains are another, and the same for the plains.
22x Foil Basic Lands with New Art
Logged in Monday to get one. It was already sold out. Upset about it and unhappy about it but not much I can do unless I want to spend more money to get it from a scalper and I don’t want it THAT badly.
This cats and dogs is reselling for almost 400.00, ajd the angels decl is selling for 400.00
I hate that the mana base was this bad, but I'll end up upgrading the deck anyway. Might as well upgrade the manabase for cheap, hell, might even add a couple of shocklands now that they're cheaper in my country.
Yea for a deck that expensive you shouldn’t have to upgrade the lands
A video on the perception that wizards is blind to the secondary market would be interesting because it's hard to find concrete facts
The deck was not 149,99€... the last one was but this one was up to 165,99€, so closer to the British price
One of my cats chews my beard! Secret Lair: Beard-Chewers Unite!
as a european. it was 165. also it it was in € and not $, which means its even more expensive. so yeah. no thanks.
also, i already have a rin and seri deck. so i'll probably just try and find the sol ring, lands and tokens.
I love dogs. My dog is my life. I had to buy this deck.
I grabbed one because I’ve been wanting to make my wife a cat and dog deck anyway.
High quality proxies it is and will stay by the looks of it
Yeah, I don’t feel like I missed out. I can get the 4 fallout decks for about the same price.
Wait until you realize there are people listing it for $1000 now
@@enoesiw Those are the people who try to list it immediately and make a massive profit. It will settle to around $400-$450 at the most.
“A sucker is born every minute.’ - Hasbro
150$ bought me a TRex, Hunting Raptors, and Dino DNA… wait…. I still have money left!
Hey, Brimaz is amazing in my Ephara deck!
Im glad it sold out before i could even think about buying it............
We use the extra money to hire tea pirates so we can steal and dump more English tea into the ocean.
A dog deck isn’t just for Christmas…
I picked up 2. I might open 1 or leave them sealed.
Those flip art cards are great because its another thing that invalidates 30th anniversary edition
Here's the thing, if the deck was printed on demand the deck would have never sold out. The other secret lairs that did sell out, the same, if they were print to demand they would have languished for the next two months. FOMO is a thing.
PK you should look at how much the US and Australia each pay for warhammer models. The gouging happens both ways.
I'm already aware. I weep for my Australian brothers and sisters (and non gender conforming)
A booster box went from 140 to 175 and now with play boosters a box goes for 210 in Canada. its insane at this point im think im done.
Yet another reason to keep banging the proxy drum
The Walking Dead cards have been reprinted "in Universe" at least.
@@PleasantKenobi oh have they, there are so many releases of magic now i must of missed them, thanks for the heads up.
I hate secret lairs, and now with their new sales model scalpers are gonna have a field day
Dachshunds are pronounced Dock-sun, at least here in the US
Was quite confused by the way he pronounced it aswell😂. It's originally a german word (lit. translates as 'badger dog'), the proper pronunciation is Daks-hunt, with a as in car, u as in pull and emphasis on the first syllable.
I spent $150 for the Angels deck, because waifu.
EU deck is actually €164.99 not €149.99
2:03 - Premium? Laughs in Australian
I need to pay for import too, so + 25% + 15 euro just for customs to import it :)
also it was 165 euro for me here....
IMO the prices are set based on human psychology. The number 150 is the goal, not the buying power of that in your local currency. Which is kind of scummy in its own way.
Isn't the answer just double speak? I'm pretty sure WotZ acknowledged the secondary market officiously, and in roundabout ways multiple times...
And it's almost immediately sold out
I'm sorry... you're telling me I started playing competitive magic almost a decade ago? No way I'm that old. No. I refuse to accept it.
I love the Esika deck I got but all the other secret lairs just don't feel worth it.
Mr.Kenobi, you pay more for Magic, we pay more for Warhammer.
No you didn’t miss out if you didn’t buy it you saved yourself a 150 bucks that you can put elsewhere. As well as exercising good impulse control not buying everything that gets put out. down the road they will release another “must buy product” that’s just how this works
I have been playing this deck for two years now, just a much better version...
you say it is not worth it but i have to disagree.
buying it would have been very worth it. you could have bought it for 150£ and can probably sell it now for atleast 200£. with the profit you can buy anointed procession as a single.
(for clarification: i dont do that and i dont like someone who does this but sadly wotc wants this to happen it seems and the point that it is financially worth it still stands even if it is morally questionable)
You named one of your dogs Bovril? Like after the drink? Oh, and this thing is going to be 600 in no time.
Pokémon is so much cheaper for the top cards. T1 decks can be built for $50.
Magic IS the rich kids game. They are stopping pretending it isnt is all.
