  • Presentation by Dr Annie McCluskey (OT) & Karl Schurr (PT) at Advance Rehab Centre, St Leonards, Sydney, NSW, Australia on Tues 8th March 2016
Using photos and videos, this 1 hr presentation provides examples of task-specific training targeting activities of importance to stroke survivors, such as writing, using cutlery, and drinking from a glass. Part and whole practice examples are presented. Strategies for reducing force or pressure on objects are suggested, which is often a problem for stroke survivors with impaired sensation, in addition to decreased motor control.
Other interventions that may help improve dexterity include mirror therapy, mental practice and constraint induced movement therapy. Emphasis is placed on helping stroke survivors to practice independently or semi-supervised, without a need for manual guidance by therapists, while enabling people to complete 250-300 repetitions per hour. A brief summary of the evidence supporting these therapies is provided, and key references.
