Although I'm usually a street photographer, on my hikes in Japan and the UK, the Oly Zuiko Pro 12-40 f/2.8 on everything from my EM5 Mk1, Lumix GM5, Lumix GX80, and now the EM1 Mk2 has been outstanding. I pair it with and older and good Panny 7-14mm ultrawide. Keep fighting the MFT fight!

My super small landscape kit is the Olympus OMD E-M5 weather sealed and the Olympus 12-50mm kit lens weather sealed. I do like vertical grips so I always keep mine on but you can remove it or just not buy one and its even smaller.
Love the video and appreciate so many cameras to cover it is easy to miss one however i think you missed the EM1 mkii in the sub £500 range used. Keep up the good work, your enthusiasm is infectious x
I too would like to see a GX8 review. Just purchased a GX9 with the Panasonic 12-60mm lens. I like primes but on a recent trip to NYC for a week of street photography found this lens very versatile. I wonder if I made a mistake purchasing the 9 vs. the 8. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I love my EM-1 II. I get all the sealing and ruggedness I need, great phase detection autofocus for doing things other than landscape, competent video capabilities, but gain live composite and long exposures (the G90 does that) and focus stacking (the G9 does that) in one body. Dynamic range is on par with and ISO performance slightly better than a G9 according to the available measurements. All for the same money as a G9. For me it is the best all round package!
Many of the kits you suggested would also work for a compact, weather-sealed urban travel kit. Rain days occurred during my overseas urban travels. Since my time was limited, I could not wait for a sunny day to take photos.
My usual M43 lanscape kit is my E-M1 ii and Olympus 14-150mm and 9-18mm lenses. For bad weather I take my 12-40 Pro. My smallest/lightest kit is a GX80, Lumix 12-32mm, Oly 40-150mm and maybe Lumix 14mm in a Tomtoc sling rather than a camera bag. This kit works for city break photography too.
Very useful information in this video, I like too the m.zuiko 12-50mm f3.5-6.3, also it have electronic zoom (for video) and macro capabilities (at 43mm) with the 9-18mm f3.5-5.6 and the oly EM1M2 for years was my hiking setup, now I get the OM-5 with the pana.Leica 9mm and the m.zuiko 12-45mm f4 a more lighter and compact hiking setup. I am not a M4/3 photographer, but i love watching your videos. I am recently leaning towards smaller cameras and this is wealth of knowledge also, so fun to watch. Keep doing what you are doing because will keep watching.

I’m so excited I got into photography last year with a pen ep-3 (which I still love and use), but recently bought an M5 for $100 in great shape. I wanted more of a multi day hiking camera. This channel is very fun and inspiring, it gets me so excited to go out and take some pics!! As always, good video! The G90 is one of several odd ones in the Lumix line-up (and yes, G100 I am looking at you) with the price being higher than the what was the going rate for the G9 upon release, and keeping the price high for the duration of its sales periode. I got my G9 for €920, and what I somewhat fancied based on size was the G90 which then was at €1300, so scored a G90 second hand later, but was then spoilt rotten by the joystick on the G9... Somewhat the same with the very much less than fully featured G100, too small a step up price-vise to the very well featured EM5MkIII, which shares the same size and weight as the G100. 😮
My tiny landscape and macro kit is a GM5 with 9mm f/1.7, 60mm f/2.8 and a tiny tripod. Having said that, G9 all day for an affordable landscape body. Pixel shift with motion compensation is yummy.
I have a GH6 and a second-hand G9. When November rolls around and I get my hands on a shiny new G9ii, then I will be getting rid of my GH6 instantly. However I will be keeping my second-hand G9 as it is just phenomenal for image quality. I'm just upset that it does not come with vLog or even vLog lite. 😭😭 I'm so glad that MFT is alive and kicking as I've ploughed a king's ransom into MFT glass.

Surprised by the enthusiasm for the Leica 12-60, Whilst it was a step up from kit/budget zooms, I found it didn't compare in IQ to the Leica 8-18, let alone some of the Leica primes of course. As the late David Thorpe once said "I found it to be a compromise in everything except build quality" (regarding the 12-60, in his 8-18 review). If you want a small weather sealed Landscape lens with top IQ for a zoom I doubt you can beat the Olympus 12-45 f4 (and no Im not an Oly lens fan all my lenses are Pana Leica)

I switched the M4/3s earlier this year, so it was fun to take my Panasonic G95 on vacation with the 12-60mm kit lens, along with the Panasonic 9mm F1.7 lens, and the Panasonic 100-300mm lens. In Full Frame, the weight of the equivalent lenses would have been a killer, but I found that running around with M4/3s equipment was not an issue. Even in poor lighting, the G95 gave me far better results than what I was expecting.
I think it's unfair to overlook the magnificent 14-140 3.5/5.6 II The lens has very good close up and magnification. And it's the most versatile lens here.
@@bastian.michel I use it with a GH5 that doesn't have a reliable AF so I can't judge, the only think I can say is that works better that other lenses I have.
It’s almost a crime not to mention the E-M1 classic, it sells for less than $300 now and easily beats anything else in that budget range for landscape photography.
An enjoyable video as always got a few that were on your list the G80 body wise and the 9-18 olympus although don't use to much these days and the 6mm lawoa which I really enjoy using.
GH6 is going for 1200euros on mpb in europe, lower than GH5II somehow, crazy! Also leica 12-60 was 900euro back when i got it 2 years ago, i'm glad the price has gone down now to about 4-500euro so that more ppl can afford this wonderful lens!
I’d certainly be interested in a review of the GX8. I owned the Oly EP3 and OMD E5 at the same time. If you put the two side but side theres hardly any difference in size. Add the EVF to the EP3 and it becomes less pocketable than the E5. Paired with the 17mm or 45mm olympus lens and they both take fabulous shots.
Great video thank and lovely photos. I try and go for an even lighter combo. Olympus PM2 (£80) and a 12mm f2 olymps lens. Clips onto a my belt so i hardly know it is there. Also carry a 1-300 in my rucksack plus a viewfinder in case i see any wildlife. It works OK,
The original EM5 was what I bought after a particularly rainy day stopped me from shooting. Olympus reps back then would pour a glass of water over it as a demo of water resistance. The G9 is my main camera these days, but I still have the EM5.

Great video, Emily and good fun to watch. I notice you didnt mention the teeny weeny 12-32 pancake which is actually pretty good for landscape (and street) as well as being cheap as chips at MPB. Thats the thing with MFT - the choices are endless and there's something for everyone!
It's such a good lens! But no weather sealing unfortunately but it is stabilised. I've loved that lens particularly with the lumix g100 - such a tiny and light combo!!
So many camera and lenses to lust for! But, so little cash left! I've shaken up my collection thanks to MPB and Emily. That which I did not love enough went in trade for some little gems to fill my travel kit for Africa. Two tiny pocket cameras (Lumix ZS80 for my wife, ZS100 for me) and Sony RX10iv replace some heavy hardware. Total kit weight 3.9 pounds/1779 grams. After trading some Very NICE glass for my Africa kit, what did I keep? The lovely G9 with the 14-140mm and 100-300mm lenses. While the G9 is weather proof, the two lenses are splash and dust proof. After much tado about the G9ii, I realized that the G9 with the 14-140mm and 100-300mm lenses does most of what I want AND the cost right now for this kit of camera and lenses is comparable to the G9ii body alone. If you don't need all the bells and whistles of the G9ii, the G9 with 14-140/100-300m lenses is a fabulous m43 system at a great price for those who want premium kit! But, Emily did tempt me...again! Lumix GX8🙂
I was extremely lucky to get a G9 for £310 about a month back. Already proving its worth even with mostly stock lenses (and that 12-60mm), so might use some of the savings there for a lens upgrade from your choices!

Traditionally, landscape photography involves using chunky tripods and filters so the advantages of tiny cameras and lenses are somewhat lost. Personally, I find the E-M1 mkii and 12-40 f/2.8 are a good compromise for both tripod work, 'coz it's tough without being overly hefty, and for hand-held because of the amazing IBIS and great lens performance.
Emily, I get so excited when your new videos pop up! However, they are dangerous 😂. I thought the GX-8 was 16 megapixels? I got the GX-9 recently and thought the reason I chose it was because of the bump to 20. I returned it though. Sadly, it was too similar to my Fuji X-t30ii for street, which was the purpose. I love the Panasonic colors SOOC though! I have yet to play with an Olympus digital camera though. I have loads of 35mm lenses and the OM-1 SLR so interested…. Maybe the em-5 iii for landscapes and a little birding. So much fun isn’t it?
I purchased a Panasonic GX9 with the kit 12-60mm lens. The kit lens is very flexible and does dual stabilization. LOVE the L monochrome D film simulation. Very small and light. Has the tilty screen. A very nice body. I have the XT30. It does lack IBIS. Both are fine bodies. I’m looking at the GX8. It is larger than the G9. I like that it has an audio jack. Oh, the GX definitely has the 20mg sensor. Honestly I don’t see the difference between the 16 and 20 mp sensors as I don’t crop. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
You need to talk about getting 4/3rds lenses converted down to micro 4/3rds. Had 4/3rds used LUMIX body first. Cheaper cost if you don’t care about weight - with adapters carrying over aperture and auto-focus.
Think of weather sealing like sink handle in your kitchen. You can turn the water on and off for years and then one day it starts leaking. That's the rubber stoppers wearing out.
surprised there's no mention of the Oly 7-14 2.8 - a stunner - I loathed lugging it around for 5 months of travel... until I needed to shoot in a tight spot in less than perfect light (ie early morning and evening landscapes, indoors, or even in dark laneways) and then it became my favourite lens ever.... until it came off and I had to lug it around again, bloody big heavy stupidly good, but crazy expensive for a "just a holiday not a photography trip" purchase
Love the videos Emily, recently found the channel and hooked! I’m thinking of getting the em 5 mkii as a small weather sealed body. I spend a lot of time outdoors in Scotland and mainly will be shooting landscape, but also “environmental portraits” especially climbers taken up close (so need a wide angle to get the feel of the environment and also frame the subject). I’ll be operating in Scottish wind, rain, snow so don’t want to fork out loads to then break the lens. But ideally it will be able to stuff in a pocket or down a jacket and climb with it, so I was thinking about the pancakes like the 14-42, do you have any recommendations? Great choice on the camera! I'm not sure If the pancake lenses are also weather sealed, and you'd need both to be sealed if youre in tricky weather. The olympus 8-25mm f4 would cover all your bases for landscapes, but it isn't really too "tiny" . You'd get away with the pancake lens fine so long as you put your camera safely away if it rained
Interesting video 👏👏👏👏 I would interested in a comparison of APSC lenses compared in size and weight to micro four thirds. I have a Fuji xt2 with 18-55 and 55-200. But I am not sure about upgrading to the xt5, I am thinking about a LUMIX G9-2 for the computational options and the long reach lenses. 🤔😵💫
I have a gx85 (us market name), and while that's a stupid value as well, I suspect it's worth sourcing a gx8 for some of the upgrades if the price difference isn't too big.
just coming in to say you probably missed the best ever value in all of the micro four thirds world : the Olympus E-M1 mark II ! Basically an E-M5 mark III, slightly older, with better specs (larger battery, better burst rates), phase detect AF, 20MP sensor, probably the best wearhter sealing of any MFT camera short of the E-M1 mark III, E-M1X and OM-1, EXCEPTIONAL grip and overall ergonomics and you can get it for under 500€. It's also smaller than the G9 which was it's Lumix "competitor" at the time, but doesn't skimp on the good stuff (IBIS, OLED EVF, touch screen ect) In my opinion, if you get the E-M1ii, it doesn't get much better later on in the whole of MFT... the OM-1 adds a stacked sensor, and the G9ii adds 5 more megapixels but in the grand scheme of things none of those will really help you get better images. If you can't catch what you want to cath with teh 18fps burst and the 20MP of the E-M1ii, the problem lies behind the camera.
I've watched this video probably 6 times now. I want to dive into landscape photography and I'm considering two cameras. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 or the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. Advice before I purchase?
Can't go wrong with either! They're both very similar spec wise. I went with the gx8 simply because I prefer the lumix menu systems and find them a bit more intuative, but that is totally down to personal preference. Both tick all the boxes you need. Completely superficially, the olympus is a much prettier camera!
Hi. My question is. I have bought the G90 quite recently and I think the screen seems a bit "dull" to me, do you think this as well? I am comparing it to my G9 and my (GX9 sold that for the G90) and also to my pocket TZ200, and my GX8 sold that as well. Thanks Ken.
As much negativity as there is when it comes to CDAF, the G90 has far less focus points than the G9. I'd suggest the G9 over the G90. It's just not worth going back to a model from 6 years ago if you're going to limit the already limited autofocus as it is. I find that even in photography the PDAF of the Olympus cameras is definitely a worthwhile consideration. Many will say it's more important for video, but it does make a difference. I had a Panasonic G7 for years that could fail me at the worst times when it came to autofocus. I didn't even try to us C-AF. I realize that's an even more dated model, but it was a good camera in spite of its weak points.
Gotta be honest ... your content is awesome BUT ... can't help but wonder if your viewpoint is being skewed by sponsorship because MPD's 2nd hand prices are on par with brand new. Which just doesn't compute. Seriously, you can buy cheaper on ebay but with the benefit of confidence from their rating across x number of reviews. (I just did this last night and saved a hundred quid for an M.Zuiko 40-150mm /f2.8 PRO lens. Plus the ebay price included all taxes and shipping ... which MPD does not). I suspect that the "used market" is just a tough place to operate in - I've had disappointing experiences with KEH Cameras in the US where the item received just didn't quite live up to the standard they described it as. So whether it's price or quality ... I think that some of these operators need to really work on their value proposition. Otherwise, totally love LOVE L.O.V.E. your content and the way you so generously share your advice 😁😁👍👍👍
The lack of 1080p on the E-M5 put me off as I would want to be able to do at least a little video, otherwise that thing is a steal. Unless anyone knows if that can be tricked/hacked into giving progressive video at 1080 somehow..

An enjoyable video as always got a few that were on your list the G80 body wise and the 9-18 olympus although don't use to much these days and the 6mm lawoa which I really enjoy using.
GH6 is going for 1200euros on mpb in europe, lower than GH5II somehow, crazy! Also leica 12-60 was 900euro back when i got it 2 years ago, i'm glad the price has gone down now to about 4-500euro so that more ppl can afford this wonderful lens!

I’d certainly be interested in a review of the GX8. I owned the Oly EP3 and OMD E5 at the same time. If you put the two side but side theres hardly any difference in size. Add the EVF to the EP3 and it becomes less pocketable than the E5. Paired with the 17mm or 45mm olympus lens and they both take fabulous shots.
im still rocking on gx80 and tz90 its a ok for what i do my set up was less the 300 quit with kit lens 12-32
Great video thank and lovely photos. I try and go for an even lighter combo. Olympus PM2 (£80) and a 12mm f2 olymps lens. Clips onto a my belt so i hardly know it is there. Also carry a 1-300 in my rucksack plus a viewfinder in case i see any wildlife. It works OK,
The original EM5 was what I bought after a particularly rainy day stopped me from shooting. Olympus reps back then would pour a glass of water over it as a demo of water resistance. The G9 is my main camera these days, but I still have the EM5.

Great video, Emily and good fun to watch. I notice you didnt mention the teeny weeny 12-32 pancake which is actually pretty good for landscape (and street) as well as being cheap as chips at MPB. Thats the thing with MFT - the choices are endless and there's something for everyone!
It's such a good lens! But no weather sealing unfortunately but it is stabilised. I've loved that lens particularly with the lumix g100 - such a tiny and light combo!!
So many camera and lenses to lust for! But, so little cash left! I've shaken up my collection thanks to MPB and Emily. That which I did not love enough went in trade for some little gems to fill my travel kit for Africa. Two tiny pocket cameras (Lumix ZS80 for my wife, ZS100 for me) and Sony RX10iv replace some heavy hardware. Total kit weight 3.9 pounds/1779 grams.
After trading some Very NICE glass for my Africa kit, what did I keep? The lovely G9 with the 14-140mm and 100-300mm lenses. While the G9 is weather proof, the two lenses are splash and dust proof. After much tado about the G9ii, I realized that the G9 with the 14-140mm and 100-300mm lenses does most of what I want AND the cost right now for this kit of camera and lenses is comparable to the G9ii body alone. If you don't need all the bells and whistles of the G9ii, the G9 with 14-140/100-300m lenses is a fabulous m43 system at a great price for those who want premium kit!
But, Emily did tempt me...again! Lumix GX8🙂

I was extremely lucky to get a G9 for £310 about a month back. Already proving its worth even with mostly stock lenses (and that 12-60mm), so might use some of the savings there for a lens upgrade from your choices!

Ya know, just come back from safari and we had two people in the car just using their phones. Some of their photos were astounding!
Traditionally, landscape photography involves using chunky tripods and filters so the advantages of tiny cameras and lenses are somewhat lost. Personally, I find the E-M1 mkii and 12-40 f/2.8 are a good compromise for both tripod work, 'coz it's tough without being overly hefty, and for hand-held because of the amazing IBIS and great lens performance.
I love your videos with mpb. Although I have to say that for someone with GAS (Gear Akquisition Syndrome) its dangerous to watch 😆

Emily, I get so excited when your new videos pop up! However, they are dangerous 😂. I thought the GX-8 was 16 megapixels? I got the GX-9 recently and thought the reason I chose it was because of the bump to 20. I returned it though. Sadly, it was too similar to my Fuji X-t30ii for street, which was the purpose. I love the Panasonic colors SOOC though! I have yet to play with an Olympus digital camera though. I have loads of 35mm lenses and the OM-1 SLR so interested…. Maybe the em-5 iii for landscapes and a little birding. So much fun isn’t it?
I purchased a Panasonic GX9 with the kit 12-60mm lens. The kit lens is very flexible and does dual stabilization. LOVE the L monochrome D film simulation. Very small and light. Has the tilty screen. A very nice body. I have the XT30. It does lack IBIS. Both are fine bodies.
I’m looking at the GX8. It is larger than the G9. I like that it has an audio jack. Oh, the GX definitely has the 20mg sensor. Honestly I don’t see the difference between the 16 and 20 mp sensors as I don’t crop.

You need to talk about getting 4/3rds lenses converted down to micro 4/3rds.
Had 4/3rds used LUMIX body first.
Cheaper cost if you don’t care about weight - with adapters carrying over aperture and auto-focus.

surprised there's no mention of the Oly 7-14 2.8 - a stunner - I loathed lugging it around for 5 months of travel... until I needed to shoot in a tight spot in less than perfect light (ie early morning and evening landscapes, indoors, or even in dark laneways) and then it became my favourite lens ever.... until it came off and I had to lug it around again, bloody big heavy stupidly good, but crazy expensive for a "just a holiday not a photography trip" purchase
Love the videos Emily, recently found the channel and hooked! I’m thinking of getting the em 5 mkii as a small weather sealed body. I spend a lot of time outdoors in Scotland and mainly will be shooting landscape, but also “environmental portraits” especially climbers taken up close (so need a wide angle to get the feel of the environment and also frame the subject). I’ll be operating in Scottish wind, rain, snow so don’t want to fork out loads to then break the lens. But ideally it will be able to stuff in a pocket or down a jacket and climb with it, so I was thinking about the pancakes like the 14-42, do you have any recommendations? Thanks again, keep up the great work!
Great choice on the camera! I'm not sure If the pancake lenses are also weather sealed, and you'd need both to be sealed if youre in tricky weather. The olympus 8-25mm f4 would cover all your bases for landscapes, but it isn't really too "tiny" . You'd get away with the pancake lens fine so long as you put your camera safely away if it rained

But I am not sure about upgrading to the xt5, I am thinking about a LUMIX G9-2 for the computational options and the long reach lenses. 🤔😵💫

I have a gx85 (us market name), and while that's a stupid value as well, I suspect it's worth sourcing a gx8 for some of the upgrades if the price difference isn't too big.

I'd probably say the lumix leica 12-60?? F2.8-f4 lens, its one of my all time faves and very versatile!!
just coming in to say you probably missed the best ever value in all of the micro four thirds world : the Olympus E-M1 mark II !
Basically an E-M5 mark III, slightly older, with better specs (larger battery, better burst rates), phase detect AF, 20MP sensor, probably the best wearhter sealing of any MFT camera short of the E-M1 mark III, E-M1X and OM-1, EXCEPTIONAL grip and overall ergonomics and you can get it for under 500€.
It's also smaller than the G9 which was it's Lumix "competitor" at the time, but doesn't skimp on the good stuff (IBIS, OLED EVF, touch screen ect)
In my opinion, if you get the E-M1ii, it doesn't get much better later on in the whole of MFT... the OM-1 adds a stacked sensor, and the G9ii adds 5 more megapixels but in the grand scheme of things none of those will really help you get better images. If you can't catch what you want to cath with teh 18fps burst and the 20MP of the E-M1ii, the problem lies behind the camera.

I've watched this video probably 6 times now. I want to dive into landscape photography and I'm considering two cameras. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 or the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. Advice before I purchase?
Can't go wrong with either! They're both very similar spec wise.
I went with the gx8 simply because I prefer the lumix menu systems and find them a bit more intuative, but that is totally down to personal preference.
Both tick all the boxes you need.
Completely superficially, the olympus is a much prettier camera!
Hi. My question is. I have bought the G90 quite recently and I think the screen seems a bit "dull" to me, do you think this as well? I am comparing it to my G9 and my (GX9 sold that for the G90) and also to my pocket TZ200, and my GX8 sold that as well. Thanks Ken.
As much negativity as there is when it comes to CDAF, the G90 has far less focus points than the G9. I'd suggest the G9 over the G90. It's just not worth going back to a model from 6 years ago if you're going to limit the already limited autofocus as it is. I find that even in photography the PDAF of the Olympus cameras is definitely a worthwhile consideration. Many will say it's more important for video, but it does make a difference. I had a Panasonic G7 for years that could fail me at the worst times when it came to autofocus. I didn't even try to us C-AF. I realize that's an even more dated model, but it was a good camera in spite of its weak points.
Did the g9 increase in price? I got it for sub £500 (£485) not long ago in good condition.

Gotta be honest ... your content is awesome BUT ... can't help but wonder if your viewpoint is being skewed by sponsorship because MPD's 2nd hand prices are on par with brand new. Which just doesn't compute. Seriously, you can buy cheaper on ebay but with the benefit of confidence from their rating across x number of reviews. (I just did this last night and saved a hundred quid for an M.Zuiko 40-150mm /f2.8 PRO lens. Plus the ebay price included all taxes and shipping ... which MPD does not). I suspect that the "used market" is just a tough place to operate in - I've had disappointing experiences with KEH Cameras in the US where the item received just didn't quite live up to the standard they described it as. So whether it's price or quality ... I think that some of these operators need to really work on their value proposition.

The lack of 1080p on the E-M5 put me off as I would want to be able to do at least a little video, otherwise that thing is a steal. Unless anyone knows if that can be tricked/hacked into giving progressive video at 1080 somehow..
