    Very helpful video- thank you. I esp appreciated your reminder that changing behavior takes time (and consistency). I’m a new (2 months) foster parent with a stubborn, 13- year- old Lhasa Apso. He’s a handful, but training *myself * to “be consistent, patient , and fair is harder. Thanks for the tips and roadmap.

    Do this for a week. Eventually he will walk next to u reallly slow. Or he will lead but wont pull.

    Thanks so much for this video, such a simple solution for such an annoying problem. We have a rescue who likes to pull ahead of us and is reactive to other dogs, not in an aggressive way, more like a "why won't they play with me?!" way. Hopefully once we get this down it'll help with his reactivity too.

    • @mcsdog

      @@mcsdog tysm! Yes, I did it with him in the backyard (his usual play area) for a about 15 minutes then in the house for another 10, walking around before I took him outside again. He looked to me very quickly and didn't pull very much. I walked to all the doors and some Windows and after a few times to the doors, he was very relaxed on the lead.
      Someone even came and visited in a car while we were outside and he was way more relaxed than he usually is when vehicles or ppl come around me. He didn't pull to go towards it or them. He only paced a little but then he just stood still by my side, with the leash relaxed as i spoke to them. This is a big deal bcos he pulls alot or he will pace constantly.
      Our daily walks are usually confined to my property, so an area he's gotten familiar with but
      My goal is to be able to go on runs with him and carry him to the beach in the future, and also be comfortable around strangers. so I'm working very slowly with him as he's a v anxious dog. Tysm for these tips, I've subscribed and hope to learn a lot more in the future!

    Our puppy walks nicely on leash when she is not scared. But if a big truck goes by or we walk past a barking dog, she gets scared and pulls to get the heck away from the scary trigger. When fear is activated, how on earth do we get her to stop pulling for her own health and safety?

    • @mcsdog
      @mcsdog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Set up some training sessions where you are at a distance of such triggers. Let her get used to the "trigger" from an area she can observe, without feeling threatened by it. Maybe my video on reactive behavior can give some insight how this can work. th-cam.com/video/JcA2vMQyJk4/w-d-xo.html

    My dog pulls the worst when we arrive somewhere by car and get out to get to a place (dog park, pet food store). She gets excited and fixated on where she wants to go.
    When I leave my house to walk my dog around the neighborhood and surrounding areas, she is generally ok with the pulling.
    I think the issue is that her excitement causes her to pull more? What do you think? What can I do to reduce the pulling when arriving somewhere by car and then trying to get to, say, the dog park? Thanks in advance

    • @mcsdog
      @mcsdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right, the excitement is what makes the dog pull. The car door is similar to the door exercise we describe in this video th-cam.com/video/gezKb7g5hDo/w-d-xo.html.

    • @mcsdog

      Work on your loose leash sessions AFTER your regular walks. Eventually, you will see more and more of the loose leash on your normal walks.
      the dogs in these videos learned to walk nicely on a loose leash in one session. It's really the person walking the dog that needs to understand the body language part of this exercise

    hi there, there is a boarding facility I go to where they use slip leads for the dogs. However, my dog pulls in the situations where I will drop her off and then walk back to the car but she ends up choking on the slip lead when she pulls to get to me as I walk away, as well as when I come to pick her up, she will pull on the slip lead that a staff member is holding to get to me as I get closer, but then she ends up choking. I brought my concern to the owner but the owner says that she is fine and that she would stop pulling if she was hurting herself.
    How do I stop my dog from pulling in these situations so she doesn't choke? thanks

    • @mcsdog
      @mcsdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always practice this prior to being in situations such as when you are leaving her at the boarding facility. Her wanting to be near you is way too much of a distraction. Practice first inside the home or in the back yard, when there are no distractions - you may like our series on basic obedience, that is where Jim covers a lot of this training. th-cam.com/play/PLVnx5ZZWDcJGTKxYlSeANDXRQ7CkhgsYk.html
