  • SAVE Money, family live on $1000 in Cuenca Ecuador! We don't just "tell" people how to save money, we LIVE it! We live like the local people in Ecuador! We rent for $250, use public transportation and walk, and we also eat in Ecuadorian restaurants with real Ecuadorian prices.

Thanks for the comment Richard. Without pointing fingers and finding fault, it is clear that UNUSUALLY TARGETED DEMAND creates spiraling price inflation. And where it concerns housing, everyone needs a roof over their head, not just wealthy foreigners and retirees, regardless of their "nationality".

Your message needs to reach the expats in all countries. It appears that in Vilcabamba a while back the high price of living has pushed out the locals and the locals have become resentful and violent towards the expats because of it.

Perhaps you could do a couple of segments on that. How are your and your family's Spanish coming along? Is communication frustrating? Do you interact primarily with local people or other ex-Pats?

Here's a tip: Put a facial board on those large shelf openings. It will hide the shelf braces, and make it look much cleaner. I'd also use braces that didn't sink below the bottom margin of the shelf, even better, I'd run a 2x4 across the back, anchored into the wall and brace to that.

Thanks for the info. I must agree that we can be our worst enemy when we willy nilly pay the asking price and not take into consideration the local way. Its not our country its not our way! If you like it learn it and make it your way. Then live on $1000 as you were in 2014. I never though about the effect on the local people when, at lest to them, rich foreigners are taking their homes. I know I would not like it.

Seeing you build that corner shelf made me cry! My late husband was a wonderful woodworker & he once built me a beautiful plant stand almost identical to that, only slightly larger! You folks did a wonderful job making your own furniture! I can just imagine my sweetie doing the same if he were still here!
I've been trying to figure out my new reality as a widow since he died 4 1/2 years ago & for the last 2+ years, have entertained the idea of moving overseas. Ecuador would be my first choice. Do you feel it would still be safe for a woman living alone? I would NOT want to be in some "gringo compound". I wish more foreigners would have your attitude. That is my biggest fear about moving - that I would fall in love with the place, but 2-4 years later, be forced out, if rents doubled/tripled/???. I'd be living on my social security widow's benefits - which should be just fine, as I already live a VERY frugal minimalist lifestyle here in Florida. But I'd hate to get all "settled in" and then be "priced-out" in a few years by wealthier foreigners coming in & paying the higher prices.

In Cuenca, we are well aware that the vast majority of expats comes here because of the low cost of living, in other words, we know that most of you are not wealthy, so don't get rip off.

I live in Central FL..when the snow birds arrive, the stores, streets and parking lots are jammed. And yes, there are people who move in with relatives, rent out their house for the snow bird season and make enough off 'Yankees' to pay their yearly taxes and then some. Like in all tourist places, you can drive 25 minutes from Disney and get things for half the price. Live any place that people are willing to pay higher prices and you too will pay. Here in FL..people move out into the county live cheaper, and drive into Tampa or Orlando to make higher wages.

8:00 also the owners live in the USA or Canada and know how much we pay for rent here so they take advantage of that.
I also know someone who owns a real estate agency in Cuenca with its main office in Queens, NY and I’m pretty sure they target foreigners because it’s easier for them communicate but they also give them U.S. prices. The locals will probably have to move outside the city for them to be able to afford a reasonable rent.

Only 18 percentage of people living in Panama are natives. And yes sixtyfive thousand Chinese are moving here to build a new train system from border to border. Also to widened the just two year old canal. In the old days you could buy a hectar of land for .18 cents. So the US left and here came the Canadian and we'll to do Californians. Boom price hikes it's all about greed and they don't give a crap about Panama. It's a business deal.
I have to laff when they refer to the Banana Republic. The CIA made Noreaga what he became. Based on current news from the US, who really is the Banana Republic? Keep us informed of any changes.

Your opinion is well taken, however, it's absolutely NOT about who has the most money, it's about why should I pay more than someone else because they "perceive" that I have money. You see, when you look at it in a different light you will see that it's really about principle. It doesn't matter if it's about a small little nick-nack or a house you want to buy. For example, the house is listed at $85,000 dollars but when you call it, they find out you are a foreigner by your accent and they say the ad has a typo and the price is really $185,000 dollars. So, do you still feel bad about negotiating the real price of that house or because you're rich, pay the $185K? BTW, we live like the locals no matter where we live. Thanks for commenting.
