I’m an Ecuadorian living in Houston, but I remember going to Cuenca every spring for break and loving everything about the city. Although Guayaquil is where my home is, I have always had a soft spot for the Andes. Took my wife to city outside of Cuenca in 2003 and we fell in love with it’s highland country feel.

I did enjoy the video, truth is you can live very economically in Ecuador. But life there is not perfect either. I can see myself doing what most Ecuadorian’s who live outside of Ecuador do - spring and fall in the U.S. / summers and winters in Ecuador (Andes and the Coast).

I just returned from Ecuador and spent two weeks in Cuenca, a month in Manta and a week in Galapagos. Cuenca is a lovely city with so many places to visit and with the Tranvia you can get across the city inexpensively and quickly. I was lucky enough to meet friends in Galapagos who live in Cuenca and they also have a really nice apartment for a very reasonable cost. Ecuador is a beautiful country with wonderful people. I will very likely return there.

Im fixing to do that this summer as soon as my lease is up. I fear being homeless in America, as im an elderly lady, alone w no safety net, and a doctor messed up my hip replacement so I'll use a walker forever. It's no condition to be alone in but I can't face the thought of being homeless, Especially in the cold.
It makes me sad that America has taken in ppl from all over the world and helped them have a better life, but we have few places to go now that we are old.😢

I visited Ecuador for 10 days a number of years ago and spent 4 in Cuenca. If I were to move to spend significant time living overseas Cuenca would be top of my list, Primary reason is the climate as I hate hot weather. Having $US as the currency is a big plus, and there are no extra costs/prices for being a foreigner.

Nice video, I’m actually from Ecuador and moved to Florida in 2002 when I was 21 years old. When I used to lived in Ecuador I used to enjoyed both worlds the coast and the highlands. I honestly enjoyed more the highlands cities. But I’m pretty much living the American dream in the States (Im a government employee and have VA disability, the wife and I don’t have kids, which is pretty sweet.) If I ever go back to Ecuador I can live like a king just with my VA disability but one thing that I do not miss from Ecuador is the robbery. I personally was robbed twice when I was a teen in Guayaquil plus the heat sucks over there that is why I enjoyed more Quito, Latacunga, Ambato, Cuenca. But good for everyone that can move and enjoy retirement in another countries with a small budget 👏🏻👏🏻

Ecuador is a great country with great people. Not to throw shade on
anyone, but you should know that the only people I know who move to
Ecuador are those who never considered Colombia. Emilia and JP said so
on their "why" video. In the beginnings of the Pandemic, many foreign
nationals had to be rescued from Ecuador, because the government
suspended all flights. I know other people who had to be rescued from
Ecuador for other reasons. Visit Medellin and the Coffee Region of
Colombia before you decide where to retire. Just a friendly suggestion.

@@maryoriezambrano7690 you are obviously uneducated on economics. There are about 10,000 Expats in Azuay with most concentrated in Cuenca spending $250,000,000 a year to landlords, taxis, restaurants, Mercados, Tiendas, Entertainment, veterinarians etc which provides jobs and income to Ecuadorians. This in new money brought into Azuay added to sustain the economy of Cuenca and its people. Nobody is here taking anything for free, expats come and contribute economically and many donate to charity and volunteer. I’m not sure where your negativity comes from, most Ecuadorians that make comments are very positive and encouraging, understanding expats and tourism means jobs.

Indeed, Ecuador is dirt cheap in regards to food, obviously without counting expensive restaurants, and the price for the apartment is spot on considering that's inside a residency building, u can rent apartments/houses for around $300 a month, so the price can actually go less than $1000 if u want. And for the record, Cuenca is not that dangerous compared to other cities like Guayaquil for example, so it's safe to say that overall it's more pacific, and as pointed out in the video, ppl over there like to hang out and party, drunk ppl can be an issue depending on where u at in Cuenca.

This said, she actually is scheduled to visit Egypt in a few months with some friends she’s made in Cuenca. You can look up flights from Ecuador on Skyscanner.com Guayaquil and Quito are the two international airports here, with Guayaquil the closer of the two. Cuenca has regional airport for a short flight to Guayaquil or Quito if needed.

One thing to notice, is really expensive getting McDonalds, Taco Bell, Bebe ether king than eating in a restaurant that serves organic food.
If $1000 spuds cheap to you try living in the surrounding of Cuenca, sick is Azogues, Paute, Biblian, Girón, etc etc will blow your mind, $500 or less.

Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you have anyone that has had to ‘use’ their medical insurance in Ecuador? One of the most frustrating things about the US is the fear of the unknown once you try to use your insurance and start dealing with networks, copays, deductibles, and ultimately uncovered costs. Do you think there are any expats that you know that would be willing to discuss their interaction with the national insurance as well as the private insurance...for example, a stent, bypass, emergency surgery, trauma, etc. I speak as a physician in the US for many years in various types of practices to include ER and inner city family practice. I also practiced in rural Canada for two years. Anyhow, I would love to hear from people who had to negotiate the system for non-elective issues. Thanks for your good work.
