Garmin recommends it's 20 yards from the end target so it can pick up the projectile in flight. An arrow is so slow you'll be fine at 5-10 yards so it has time to pick up the arrow reliability with consistent numbers. You can stand right in front of the device to capture the launch speed and not stand back that far. Downrange just put a target in front of it to protect it while picking up the downrange speeds for PCA.

PrecisionCutArchery announced the "Garmin Shield" several days ago on instagram. Its made by someone else but in cooperation with PCA. That way your C1 Pro is protected down range. Would have bought that, if I didn't already built my own before it came out. It's a lot easier than having to position a secondary target.

Precision Cut Archery for sight tapes is awesome, you won't be disappointed sir. I Use the 3 sight mark method (no-chrono) and its still more accurate than factory tapes.

The Garmin Xero C1 Pro is a great tool when you're using it the proper way. The unit needs to be 20 yards away, and you're supposed to be shooting directly above it, NOT setting the unit up 2' away from the target, and standing 10-15 yards back. You're lucky you didn't hit the chronograph per your set up. Personally, I've gotten away with having the target 15 yards away instead of 20 yards, when testing pistol loads. As men, we don't like reading instructions, but in this case, it could've cost you about $650.00 for NOT reading them...

I’ll get mine tomorrow. For rifle and pistol they want it within 5”-15” (I believe) of the muzzle. So, you could put it on your tripod and have it next to your arrow shaft and shoot it. That way you are getting your “muzzle velocity” (i.e. your actual release velocity). You could then also set it out at different distances (say, 10, 20, 30, etc yards) to get the velocities at those distances - if you desired. But, I would consider placing something between you and the chronograph to protect it. It looks forward and it doesn’t matter if you have a steel plate in back of it. We do this with rifles to get velocities at different distances to calculate the B.C. of the bullet. Much better than my optical chronograph in which you had to shoot through it.

PrecisionCutArchery is extremely accurate with a radar chronographs like the Garmin Xero C1 Pro. I've done the "quick start" where you just need to give it launch speed and it built a tape that made me send 2 arrows touching each other dead center at 106 yards. Shot and weighted all 6 arrows I carry in my quiver and took the average of both for the values for the tape. Sadly I couldn't yet test downrange velocity on more than 20 yards. Looking forward to your video of using that method. Just make sure to position the Garmin around 8-10 yards away from the target so it can give you an accurate reading. If you want to have downrange for 20 yards, make sure to range the Garmin 20 yards from you and then shoot for 28-30 yards on your tape, because the Garmin always calculates the speed at its own position as far as I understood it.

I have one of the old school pro chrono’s. I knocked it off the shelf the other day. Parts went everywhere, one of the plastic light kits is broken. Haven’t had the guts to plug it in and test it yet.
If it’s broken, this may be on the list.
