Ken loved his club and the game. But worst thing was for North Sydney Bears to merge with Sea Eagles.

North's were kicked out by the League, not by Manly. Manly had a licence, North's didn't. The merger was a disaster because North's supporters hated Manly with a passion. I couldn't find even one who wanted to follow the Northern Eagles. A missed opportunity.

@@canwelook that’s true in essence but same goes for Manly supporters. Wests Tigers out of recognition and respect hold onto the merger and a fair & equal one by the way. I’d support the merger if it had recognition of Bears. Plus it was Bears that voted in for Manly Warringah Sea Eagles to be playing in top tier NSWRL competition.

@@clevelandwilliams5922 You're absolutely right that Manly was greatly supported by the North Sydney Bears to enter the competition in 1947. My dad was a Bears supporter before Manly joined the comp and he switched because our family home overlooked Brookie oval. So I always had a soft spot for Norths.
When the merger was announced I was excited. The thought of combining the clubs, with all juniors and supporters between Sydney and Gosford, would have ensured success. But merging the cultures turned out to be like combining oil and water.

@@clevelandwilliams5922 I overlooked that you didn't support the merger because it didn't have recognition of the Bears. Do you agree Manly also lost in the renaming? You lost 'Bears' and partly kept 'Norths'. We lost 'Manly' and partly kept 'Sea Eagles'.
Look at the St George-Illawarra merger where the cultures didn't clash. In reality all Illawarra got to keep in the merger were their red socks (which happened to match the St George socks anyway). Illawarra seemed happy with that because it meant becoming part of arguably the most successful club in the League.

@@canwelook I agree for me the perfect merger would be recognition of North Sydney & Manly. The Logo’s sharing both Bears & Sea Eagles. A perfect equation of club colours. No overtaking or doing what Manly did, they had no intention of making it work and they didn’t want it to work either. I would’ve rather North Sydney & Balmain have merged. Two were foundation clubs and shared boundaries far better. Red, Orange & Black.

Manly lost in 1983 because Bob Fulton had the players do road runs for 2 weeks before the game rather then freshen up . The players ran on the SCG on their knees flat as a tack.

    A great man.
The game never really recovered from SuperLeague. Everything Murdoch touches corrodes.
