    This was such a good tutorial! The only thing that was left out was the width of each dark painted line. I read through the comments and someone asked the same question…1/8” was suggested. Thanks so much for a great tutorial

    Shiplap instructions starts at 4:46. The beginning is How To Paint A Wall. I suggest you put two lines, one a thin dark grey and the other black, touching, to make a shadow.

      How wide do you suggest making the entire line of shadowing? The tutorial uses 1/8” for the entire line. Did you use 1/16” or did you eyeball it? (Which would seem easier to me😆)

    Could I add random vertical lines? Most shiplap I have seen was various size planks or planks of a certain size w the ends staggered. Also could I use 2 colors for the lines (ex: darker and lighter grey to give illusion of light & shadow ? )?

      Hi Tina, Yes you could use random vertical lines! We suggest adding those in after the horizontal lines dry. You may want to test the vertical line locations with a pencil before painting, just to make sure you are happy with your vertical line location. Using 2 colors will work as well! Our tip is to try it with a pencil making one line heavy than the other and checking back at different times of day. Natural lighting could change up the shadow effect. Would love to see it when you're done! Show us with #mylocalAce on Instagram!

    What size should I make the lines? Like how thick did you make them between the 8 inch size?

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nicole, We choose an 8 inch line but it will depend on the size of your wall. Our wall was close to about 73" inches high so we took the entire amount and divided it how many planks we could fit. So, we suggest that each line be 7-9 inches in order for it to resemble shiplap wood slats. As Lou mentions in the video, you likely won't get one of the wood planks to be the same as the others, just make that the bottom one. Hope that helps, if not ask away and we'll answer!

      Ace Hardware no I mean when you paint the lines to create the shiplap. I get the actual shiplap will be 8 inches but when you paint it with the black or brown color that creates the shadowing or the detailing between the planks

      @@LanaClarkLC ah gotcha! In between the painters tape, you leave about 1/8 of an inch.

    I didn't cover up my "imperfections"....it added character to my wall.

    Can this method be used on textured walls?

    • @AceHardware
      @AceHardware  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Natalie,
      We wouldn't suggest it on a textured wall. It would be too difficult to make straight lines on a textured wall. Sorry!

    It doesn't really look like shiplap until you add vertical lines. Otherwise good.

    If I'm using a nonwhite color ( french blue color) what color should my lines be ???

      Hi Ally,We suggest using a light gray like Clark & Kensington's color Drifting Away WNCC-21. If you visit your local Ace, we have color samples for $5 so you can test it out. Here's a store locator to find your local Acewww.acehardware.com/mystore/storeLocator.jsp

    Imperfections add character....shiplap isn't meant to look perfect

    No need to patch.....come on. Think smarter than work harder. Use a snap chalk line.
