- Here's the next episode of Chordplay focusing on a handful of chords from the legendary Randy Rhoads. Randy was a unique guitarist in many ways and aside from his rock and metal influences, he studied classical guitar and applied those studies to the music he created with Quiet Riot and Ozzy during his brief career.
This approach obviously gave Randy a unique sound, style, and musical thumbprint, and this lesson is an attempt of shedding some light on some lesser-known/discussed Rhoads-influenced chords and musical moments.

Very lucky indeed, I was 14 when he died and had just bought tickets to the Diary of a madman tour and two weeks later he was gone..I was devastated...Brad did a great job filling in but I never got to see my guitar hero..

From what his Mom said was that Randy had called her while on tour saying he wanted to study classical music theory and guitar in England. I spent a lot of time about a year ago researching Randy and his Mom Dolores Rhoads owned the Musonia Music School of music which he also taught at daily. Allegedly Randy was teaching students up to the day before the Blizzard tour started. He never purchased a house or car and in between tours and recording, would stay with his Mom at the school. You're probably correct about his future. He was not really into the lifestyle of rock n roll and he ultimately would have been a teacher/composer, etc.

I remember hearing Crazy Train on the radio (back when it was first released). I knew I wanted to play guitar after hearing Randy play. It was like lightning striking. Such an amazing player gone way too soon.

Me too! In High school heard Over the Mountain when the DOAM dropped and it was all over from then on.

Totally! Ozzy owes a lot to Randy and I think he knows it.
His guitar playing really caught a lot of people's attention and Ozzy was the dude singing between those solos, so if it wasn't for Randy and they way Blizzard of Ozz developed, Ozzy's solo career could've been a flop and he might have just faded away post-Black Sabbath.
He had to come out strong and Randy was the best possible choice. He was so lucky to find him.

@@diogogomes3238 @Late Night Lessons Randy definitely had intentions of continuing to study classical guitar. Ozzy and Sarzo have both said that in past interviews. It's even fairly common knowledge that he would seek out good music teachers while on the road as they toured form city to city. He was both a Master and a Student. I think he would have continued to be life-long student. But, I also think that Randy was a natural Rock Star! He didn't become that overnight after meeting Ozzy. He was Larger-Than-Life when he took the stage and he wasn't going to lose that when he left Ozzy... which would have been after at least one more record, according to Daisley.
He would have studie d Classical and presumably would have done something professionally with it. But, he would've come back to Metal.. probably a lot sooner than later. I think it may have been the rock and Roll lifestyle while on the road With Ozzy that he needed a break from. Not every Rock band is completely out of control as he is. Oh... and Shhhhh... S.A.T.O. stands for Sharon.Adrian.Thelma.Ozzy. ... Adrian was Sharon's boyfriend who worked at Jet Records and Thelma was Ozzy's wife at the time ;)
Nobody had written a song like revelation Mother Earth it s cinematic. Feel like I just watch a movie. Closet. Guitar.To that. Is Jim Croce. Guitarist. But. Randy is way deeper.

I recently visited Baron Estates in Leesburg Fl where Randy died. I sat at the gate and listened to Revelation Mother Earth and Diary of a Madman while looking at the rebuilt Manson across the airstrip where the crash happened.. I cried and cried. Just as I did at 15 years old when I heard the news. Randy and Bob Daisley’s work changed my life forever. Influence is too small a word for his impact on me and my dedication to the guitar. Baron Estates is a very beautiful and peaceful place. However I almost wish I hadn’t seen it. Looks exactly as all the pictures we’ve all seen, but very surreal in person.

Its no secret that Randy wasnt thriving very well in the "Ozzy Osbourne" band. He had his heart at classic music and wanted to teach guitar.
Having watched a lot of footage around Randy, i got the impression that he was a very humble and shy guy.
Randy was close to a human metronome, he had excellent timing and his rhythm playing showed that.
My interests have varied a lot since high school, but the Tribute album is where it all started. Spent hours trying to re-create those songs with my friends. Thanks for the trip back!
I love Randy because he sounds (to me) as if Ace Frehley had paid attention in music class. Beautiful, interesting compositions, and an amazing clinic. Thank you.

@@LateNightLessons Funny Revelation was the first Randy song I ever heard. My friend who was a monster drummer at 15 was like you gotta hear this. I like " Whoa Whoa what the hell, holy sh-t! Then that mind boggling solo at the end. LOL. After that it was Mr. Crowley and Crazy Train and he was instantly my musical idol and still is after 38 years. Ive heard them all and no one brought a complete and total virtuoso package and flexibility like he did IMO.

I think that he was still alive, he defenitely would have done a G3 tour with Satch and Vai. When he was in Quiet Riot, they played a venue with Van Halen. Too bad Eddie's attitude and ego ruined the chance for him and Randy to jam, and possibly record together. That would have been priceless.
The darkness of his sound blew me away . He was the perfect fit for Ozzy at the time . Pure genius. We lost so much by his passing !!
Makes me feel good seeing the appreciation for Randy and his awesome ability and genius musicianship.

,,,,,,thx for this,,,,I saw R.R.,ozzy in 1981,,,boulder CO. D.O.A.M concert..😯..their set truck broke down on the way .and they played with opening bands stage,,,😐..mr,Rhodes played flawless regardless..my best musical night to date,,proud to tell the story!!!...had the 8-track in my car and cranked it the rest of that year.!..pat.
I watched an interview last night of Randy's brother saying that there was talk about Randy leaving Ozzy to study classical music and he says that was not true. I found this interesting because his Mom said Randy had told her that and if you think about it, Randy was the type person who didn't like conflict and probably didn't want to make waves. He told Ozzy his plans for the future and Randy was done with the rock scene and Ozzys drinking and doing drugs, etc. Randy was educated and driven to learn classical guitar. Randy would have become a great classical guitar player. He was good but if you've ever heard an actual classical guitar player play, you could tell that Randy was unpolished and raw but the perfect amount of talent and drive to become great.
Crimson.......Randy's brother (Kelle) is full of shit, and always has been. He had a lot of jealousy and envied his younger brother. I have an interview with Delores stating she helped Randy apply to UCLA weeks before his death to enroll and work for his degree in music......UCLA was her Alma-matter back in the 40's. I really wish Kelle would leave all interviews and subject material regarding Randy to his sister Kathy. She exudes classiness and clarity unlike her buffoon brother Kelle.
Randy was becoming a league of his own. He was already phenomenal!!!!
Any time I see Randy's songs broken down there is just something there that no other guitarist seems to have.

Great video man. Randy was so incredible. It really is hard to believe somebody like him passed in such a horrific way. He was the reason I picked up the guitar and was the only player I ever looked up too. He really would have been the greatest if he had lived.

Great lesson Randy is my main guitar influence. Nobody writes music like Randy did. All those cool chords and awesome solos. He was one of a kind. I would have liked to have heard him and Jimmy Page do something together. Could you imagine all the cool chords they could put together.
Trivia: S.A.T.O. = Sailing Across The Ocean
For myself, the song, “Diary Of A Madman” has it all as far as Randy’s finest work. And his solo in it is so incredibly haunting and melodic in unexpected ways. From the Blizzard album to “Diary,” he made incredible progress in his playing - its astonishing. I think I read he was going to record one more album with Ozzy before departing. I have wondered what he would’ve done next for the fact of his incredibly fast progress between albums - just a thoroughly exciting musician and composer! Seeing him in Alpine Valley was like watching a magician who happened to do all his wizardry with a guitar. He just left you stunned! It seems either you love Randy Rhoads or you just haven’t discovered him yet. Once he arrived on the scene, I barely paid attention to Van Halen. Randy’s loss for many left us with an open wound that never heals.

His guitar sounds so diabolical! Loved his stuff, so different from other music growing up. What he had going in my mind was voice, I’d hear his playing and know it was Randy playing.
He wrote all this in his early twenties. I just sometimes listen to diary of a madman and think to myself, how does someone come up with all that?
I'm sure if he was around he probably would've kept touring and playing as a solo artist or in a band because he had such a knack for writing solos and structuring songs.
The solo from revelation mother earth still gives me chills to this day. In-spite of RR played 80's rock his playing was still passionate and beautiful. Thank you for the lesson!

I agree with your assessment on where Randy would probably be today. He loved to teach and would have definitely pursued record producing. One could only imagine what he would have accomplished based upon what he did in such a short period of time with Ozzy.

..i was 15, depressed because ozzy and sabbath were broke. my buddies told me about ozzys new music, but i was so upset, not dealing with it, and got resentful i guess. i just couldnt understand why such an entity like sabbath, could separate. ....i snubbed the 1st album, but one night in a small town where i went to a party (i was 17 by that time), i heard the whole diary of a madman album, and there it was!!! the sound was so special, the riffs, the solos, the songs, and yes...ozzy!!!!..that is what turned me to studying guitar for 10hrs a day, and trying to go for 16hrs haha!!! anyways, there was just something so special about his tone...it was the real deal, he was what i needed. so was van halen, but for me, randy just was exactly what i needed as a musician....he still is. he isnt passed, he put his sole right on vinyl....anyways, who the heck am i....just some guy greatful guy who will never hear randy as gone....cheers, and thx for a great video man, be good.

Great lesson! The songs you’ve chosen to analyze are my favorite compositions from Randy, and now I know why! They rose above the ordinary with their unusual chords and gave his melodies their classical, baroque feel! But he threw in bluesy elements as well to round out the sound to create his unique style.
I love Randy's classical influences with metal guitar. He is one of my favorites. That last example from Diary of a madman was great. I'm going to fiddle around with those chords on guitar now. Thank you.

At 16, in 1979; I took the money I was saving for a car, I was exposed to Randy and Ozzy for the first time and took that first cash I had ever earned, and bought my first electric guitar instead. It had to a Les Paul , like the one on the blizzard album. Thanks for reminding me of that special time. Still have the guitar, still love his music!

David, I have become a huge fan of yours. Randy did seem like a musical sorcerer of sorts. I never got see him live but a few friends of mine did. They said they mesmerized by his skills and colorful chord palette. Great job as always.

I'm a player of 46 years. I don't really teach anymore because of all the Luthier/Tech stuff I get stuck with. But you are the absolute best teacher I've ever seen. I know all these songs well and you've explained them simply, and fast enough to where someone that never touched a guitar could know exactly what needs done right out of the gate. Diary of a Madman is the epitome of Randy Rhoads style and classical approach, and yes his technique on that particular *sONg* is eerie, and haunting, and spooky, and creepy, masterpiece, the lead guitar solo Randy does is really creepy, *chilling* genius I never heard anything like it before at the time and even now he definitely set a standard and raise the bar.
Very rare and unique style of playing and that's not even mentioning his ability to play rhythm as well, Randy was exalt at it his tone and thickness top notch. 👍🏼

Randy’s career was so short, its tragic. But Im glad we have the Ozzy records. Diary of a Madman was the song that I used to select my guitar teacher as a kid. I walked into a music store and this dude was playing it verbatim. I asked him if he taught before and he said “no.” I said, “You do now!” Guy became the best guitar teacher I ever had. I dedicated a solo on one of my albums to Randy - and its probably one of the best things Ive done😎. Nice work on the lessons here, well taught and explained. 👍🏻

Randy Rhoads is one of my favourite guitarists and as such I've learned around 75-80% of his material. I appreciate hearing the theory behind his genius. Diary of a Madman has such cool time signatures and chord structures!
What I have read and studied over the many years, He would have continued and finished the DOM tour, then start his studies at UCLA, his mother did here study’s there. I think he would have recorded speak of the devil, then finished out his dealings with Ozzy and record Bark at the moon, but never tour again with Ozzy (at that time). Bark at the moon was thought of when Randy was still alive, and it would have been Bob Daisley again working with Randy. At that point I see him going 100% into his studies, all the while doing session work. Rudy Sarzo said Randy would most likely be doing sessions. Randy was home sick and didn’t want to tour. I could see a reunion with Ozzy years down the road maybe at some point. I think he would have settled into recording classical albums, sessions, and doing some heavy metal too at some point. It’s amazing to think about how talented he would have become and what our ears would be
hearing! How would bark at the moon sounded. It’s all speculation, but it’s what I can come up with.
he did agree to do the live album that was going to be half Sabbath covers, it was supposed to be called History of Ozz. I agree with the reunion, but I think he would have written the third album with Bob and I believe he would have played the U.S. Festival to show up Ed van Halen.

My first arena concert experience was Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz tour with Def Leppard and The Rods in Glens Falls NY. Melted my brain. My ears rang for a couple days. Randy ripped it up. I had started to play guitar because of Ritchie Blackmore, but Randy threw me off the cliff; I've been playing since about 1979 and I'm still playing catch up with those two. Anyone into doom metal or gothic 80s rock check my page. My lead guitarist and I wore black arm bands to school for a week after Randy died. RIP Randy Rhoads. Peace.

I agree with you and I picked a guitar up in 89. Never had a lesson, but Randy's music made me keep at it. Now with TH-cam, I can take "lesson's" and my fingers and ear's are seasoned. That is a badass riff. I love how he makes use of the same notes, that sound different, cause of the sequence. I'm Not a music reader, but you know what I mean.
