    Just a quick update, my truck is still running quite well, but on occasion, I get a "check engine" code for either the crank or cam sensor. When this happens, the truck returns to the crank, no start issue, HOWEVER, it will start again if I clear the code. I've talked with a few DODGE specialist, and they've all said my timing chains or guides might be worn. If they are, the cam and crank sensor on this motor will have a small communication issue, and will trigger the engine light. So, to fix the issue, I'm going to replace the chains and guides soon (within the next few weeks).. I love the truck, it does a nice job as a little workhorse and does nice off road. A little work on it here and there is worth it to me.

    I just replaced the motor in a 2003 just like this. The truck was running when it died, (slung a rod) and we saw the new motor run before it was removed from the donor truck. The PCM (ECM)? seems to be the most likely problem. This video reinforces my theory. Thanks.

    • @svogann
      @svogann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check the cam and crank sensors and make sure they're good. If one or both are bad, this truck will NOT start. It will crank all day long, but will not fire. If those check out as good, look to the PCM. I've seen a few videos on them where the connectors can also give you headaches, but they are also quite known for the pcm failing. Good luck, let me know what you find out with yours..

    • @svogann
      @svogann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, check engine was on. I've done some work on a few like mine and most are the same. I DID also notice these have some issues with the timing chains. If they wear, they can trigger the crank and/or the cam sensors and cause a no start issue.

    Is your truck running good with no issues now? If so what was the problem and what fixed it? My wife have 2002 Ram 1500

    • @svogann
      @svogann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The truck has long been sold. However, the biggest issue on that Generation truck was the ecm/pcm. They also had a ton of electrical gremlins. Mine was running great when I sold it, but I went through a ton of sensors and had the computer rebuilt before that. Some cases are easier than others. Was a good truck. I upgraded quite a bit now. I bought a 2019 ram, new from the dealer. Love it. But plan to get a older ram to build an off road toy soon. Hope to find a late 90's to early 2000's for my build. My budget has improved, so my options are better. Good luck.

    I have the same truck and motor and was running just fine then my wife went in to leave and wouldn't start and now it's a really slow crank. First thing I done was clean up cables and still doing same thing. The only codes was for O2 sensor and two evap system leaks. Trying to figure out what it could be without overspending on other things. I did find out that motor had originally a 5.9 and swapped for 4.7 any ideas on where to start? Appreciate it!

    • @svogann
      @svogann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For mine, the pcm was the root cause. The other things made it worse. But the pcm is the major suspect. Also check the connecting wires in the harness. A pcm isn't really that expensive for a lifetime rebuilt one, so start with that.

    My dodge 2001 will only crank with the scan tool plugged into the computer port. Take out the scan tool and it won’t start. What can be the problem ?

    • @svogann
      @svogann  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like it could be related to the computer, but not 100% sure on yours. Although your truck and mine have similar electrical and computer systems. I do know that the wiring under the dash in yours has a history of problems. I had a 2000 Ram that I had to have rewired on the OBD plug to the harness. It was doing something similar to what you describe. Once it was rewired, it started right up. Wish I could be more helpful.

    I have an 03 1500 5.7.....cut off while driving now wont start....makes a whining or spinning noise when trying to start ive checked alternator starter and battery it was pretty low on oil any suggestions on what to do next

    • @svogann
      @svogann  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd do a compression test first off. The spinning noise could be a possible broken crank, but would need to hear it. The 5.7 is a good motor and doesn't usually have many issues. After checking compression, and making sure the engine is cranking, verify the basics 1. Are you getting spark, 2. Are you getting fuel, 3. Do you have compression. If you have the basics, even if it runs poorly, it SHOULD run. Fuel, spark, air, and compression is the basics.

      Also make sure the rotor is spinning if it has a distributor like mine. If it doesn't, your timing chain may be the culprit

    All of your problems or not really a problem since it seems that you are guessing at some of them or believing what you read in forums could have been proven with the use of an oscilloscope, I see too many folks replacing parts on a whim without actually testing and it is true, not all problems can be tested with a multimeter but most can be tested with an oscilloscope to include nonelectrical problems such as mechanical problems with the engine as many mechanical problems can be seen in the spark burn line if you know what you are looking at. All you really need to do if you purchase a decent scope is post the waveform online and get a good answer from so many true mechanics. Low budget parts are part of the problem also.

    • @svogann
      @svogann  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scopes only work on parts of this vehicle and issue. But feel free to jump into your own scope diag. You'll find your truck still won't start till you go through a few things. Mine had a combination of issues from sitting and having "pros" from Dodge doing their diagnosis with a factory machine. I got the truck almost 2 months after it sat in their back lot. Dodge's end conclusion was a motor replacement. Obviously a flawed final call. Truck runs, and still does today. I no longer own it, but still work on it from time to time.

  • @billsmith2212
    @billsmith2212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem with diagnosis VIA parts change is if you put in a bad part , you have created another problem . And you may have never fixed the first problem . Someone skilled at using a lab scope can check those chains for slack and SHOW it to you on the screen . You need to get a good scan tool , gather data and identify what is wrong . If you had a broken or corroded connection , wire , etc . , a parts change will never fix it . Beware of no name parts in plain boxes .

    • @svogann
      @svogann  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. I started with the PCM, replaced that. I also replaced the battery. At that point the vehicle started but ran really badly. So I replaced the spark plugs, coil packs, and the cam and crank sensors. Then it ran really well. I'm to the point now that I'm going to change out the timing chains, the guides, water pump, etc. And the throttle body sensor. Truck still runs. But I get the "limp mode" issue every now and then. Many of the forums that I see suggest the timing chains or guides. So that's where I am. I'd have it done already, but I have other things going at the same time. I may start this weekend, depending on the weather.
