Like A Version is a segment on Australian radio station triple j. Every week a musician or band comes into the studio to play one of their own songs and cover a song they love.

I was so rude 5 years ago with this cover i wanna cry lol, its actually so good, fits perfect in a 2020's coming of age movie, its pretty.
Anyone saying she's using autotune because she can't sing doesn't actually understand how autotune works. You actually STILL have to hit the note and be in key, it's solely just used for effect.
This depends heavily on how you set it up though. A friend of mine does not use it chromatic; he uses a key he wants and sings slightly off the tone to ensure that autotune always tunes it to the correct note. It makes a noticable difference if he hits the note though.
But I completely agree that this use in this particular song is really for the style and I really like it :)
You don't have to hit any key because you can manipulate the key, that is the whole point of it, if you want to go three octaves higher you turn a dial...

All the negative comments on here are kind of insane. This is so pretty on the ears for me. Her use of autotune sounds so emotional and you can tell when she’s singing it that she’s really feeling it. It’s a futuristic effect that I think is used very well here.
Coming from a die hard Wolf Alice fan I totally agree.
Charlie’s voice wasn’t auto tuned, Charlie used auto tune as an instrument. It’s actually brilliant.

I think the auto-tune was used very cleverly. We must understand the use of auto-tune is for style purposes. Let's not be quick to accept the regular social rejection of such tool.

Lol, Imogen Heap used autotune a lot better than this, 8 or so years ago. People have heard this apparent 'creative' style before too done better, its really just as bad as other applications. Sounds so insincere to boot.

Wonderful. She took a risk with her interpretation and it really rewards repeat listens/views. The longing is so urgent - she nails it - the tone, the sound, the performance. Amazing how conservative some JJJ fans are.

I honestly have been listening to this on repeat. I love the affects the autotune has on her vocals when she say "wasn't meant to beEeeEeeEeee". Not anyone can sing with autotune and make it sound so good. Ik she has a great voice either way, but Charli's voice mixed with autotune sounds magnificent

Don't think any of you get it. It's what Charli does, the autotune obviously a big part of her sound. Her voice is as much as instrument as the drum pad. She uses it a lot but it doesn't make her any less of an artist!!
Wolf Alice even put effects on Ellie's voice during Live Performances, she's not ruining the song. Only her interpretation

She gives the song a punchy sound which is a great way to reflect the desperation. The original definitely had a Windows down driving down highway crying vibe while this is like late at night in your bedroom. Both very valid and relatable!

I love covers where the musician stays true to their own style. It's interesting to see what they come up with. I like this, but Wolf Alice's live session avail on Spotify is my favorite way to listen to it so far.

Adam Nealon maybe I shouldn't have been so sensitive but now I'm already pissed. Don't really know the original song but since she is looking at her phone she never heard it like a fan would. Art vs Science made an awesome cover of... Metallica. Chvrches made an awesome cover of... Arctic Monkeys. Maybe Charli wasn't given a choice of what to cover so she could do an amazing job and really show her talent and love and musical background. By how she is wearing no make-up, using autotune and looking at her phone it seems to me she wanted to show how unnappreciated she felt by this. imo I don't even care about any of that bs because I love her but yeah if you want my opinion that is it.

Born in the 50's FWIW - Grew up w/ British Invasion, lived thru Summer of Love, Punk/New Wave, Grunge, Trip-Hop, etc... That said, Wolf Alice rocks my world and Charli does a lovely job here. I immediately purchased the digital audio version of this from Amazon. I am delighted to still be alive in this musical era - so much to take in and enjoy!!

I swear the original version is her just singing it differently. I cannot not hear her whenever I listen to that song. If she'd wanted she couldve sounded EXACTLY like the original. I think that's why she didn't try to do that, but I would've liked to hear that to verify that she is actually the vocalist on it lol. It isn't her style of song but I swear to God it's her singing. Even with this different version she still sounds more like the original than Wolf Alice's live performance of it

It's objectively not a good cover, the auto tune does not compliment the rest of the song. Autotune can work artistically and musically, but it didn't here. This deserved criticism, and got it, don't be so sensitive.
You don't need to be beethoven to recognize when something doesn't work. Don't fucking patronize me. This is not art, poorly covering another bands song is not art. What a weird comment, anyone that listens to music is judging it, that's how you determine whether you like the band/artist. Maybe, "honey", just accept music is allowed to be criticized and judged, anyone can do that, not just beethoven.
"Growing up" would be to accept that other people will enjoy different things and have differing opinions, and not telling them to grow up.
