When I first saw the film, Eboshi seemed like a villain to me as well. From another perspective, however, she is a heroic figure. In the documentary book of this film, Hayao Miyazaki says that Eboshi, like the women of the Iron Town, has a history of being sold off as a prostitute to the pirates who were ravaging China and Korea at the time. But Eboshi returned to Japan where she defeated the bandits, stole cannon technology, and founded Iron Town as a racism-free paradise where similarly oppressed prostitutes and lepers could live and laugh. And in Japanese folk mythology, the gods of the forests and animals were fierce and always unfriendly to humans, who could easily take their lives if approached carelessly, and humans had to live under their tutelage. That is why Eboshi, a modern rationalist and godless man, burned the forest. To add, it was not Eboshi's will alone that burned the forest and killed the gods. The emperor's army that dispatched the monk Jigo also wanted to kill the forest gods and create a world ruled by humans. But they did not want to commit such an impious act as killing the gods, so they used Eboshi. Eboshi also carries out the god-killing, knowing that he is being used. Certainly Eboshi and his friends did wrong, but it was a mistake they made because they had something to protect.
Some context: cutting of your hair often represent a point of no return. This is usually more a eastern thing (yet not exclusively). The moment Ashitaka cut of his hair symbolizes the start of his journey and his willingness to give up his role as prince. Saying "You are dead to us" is not meant to be brutal, but they respect his decision to leave the clan without the possibility of his return. Fun fact: Kaya isn't really Ashitakas sister but his bride-elect (the sister only appears in the english dub) The 'taking in the strength by eating the flesh' is meant in a more spiritual sense. When you eat food you regain strength. If you eat certain foods it will provide you with more energy then others. An deistic beliefs you might entertain the idea that you 'absorb the essence' of the food you consume. Therefore if you consume a more powerful being you become as powerful. As Monoke states this is not something the apes usually believed, it is a desperate attempt to defend themselves against the humans, because their usually tactics do not work against them anymore. 40:00 this was basically jerky. He was too week to chew it himself so he chewed it so he can eat. Basically what bird do for their chicks.
Confirming this context to be accurate. I'm adding another fun fact. Moro (the big wolf matriarch) and Okkoto Nushi (the boar patriarch) used to be in a relationship. Moro in the original Japanese movie is acted in the way a seasoned woman talks to an ex from her youth. The voice actor originally voiced like Moro was talking to an old acquaintance, at which point Miyazaki told the voice actor that they used to be an item until about 100 years ago. The voice actor's reaction, understandably was "Huh!?"
It is common in Japan (and probably in Korea as well) to call an older, close male a brother. Kaya uses the old term "Anisama", but you can hear the modern word "Oniichan" frequently in anime.
Its original manga (from Hayo Miyazaki) is better tho. I recommend reading it even if you haven’t read any manga before. It’s more complete than the movie, and I’ve seen very few things like last chapters of it; maybe in video games like Outer Wilds. The movie is still good, especially the soundtrack, it’s just that Princess Mononoke is superior to it, but not to its source material.
From Japan. As a Japanese person, this anime is one of my most important works. At the time of its release (1997), it had the highest level of animation beauty and profound feeling.
I have the VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, and have attended several fan-showings across multiple conventions and streaming releases. THIS is perhaps the film of a LIFETIME. Following up on NAUSICA. This is one of the best pieces of art that Ghibli has produced. Very hard to recreate this bottle of lightening. MADHOUSE and GAINAX have come very close. This kinda stuff BEATS DISNEY WITH A BROKEN THORN! Real.
I watch this movie at least twice a year. It's my absolute favorite movie of all time. So many messages and so many truths spoken in this film. Ashitaka is like the king of morals - a true example of how people should strive to be. And me being a romantic, I love this movie for the chemistry between him and San, too. The way they both reach to give back the head, then the neck extends and Ashitaka's not sure what's going to happen, so he holds San, is just everything. Even the smallest details in this movie help make it the wondrous thing that it is.
Same with me! I didn't really understand it when I watched it as a kid in early 2000s but I watched it again in university and it hit so differently, now it's a tradition that I watch it twice a year (not including when I watch along with reactors :P )
Ashitaka was once a PRINCE of his village, but had to be lowered down into the rest of the shit-ugly World to truly express and find his values. A TRUE Marine. A TRUE Hero. A learning experience for all young Men and Boys and girls and Women... To SEE the struggle and APPRECIATE the struggles of others and to empathize. A GREAT MOVIE. There is NOTHING great about War. And quit destroying nature and animals for no reason.
5:48 What the old woman said in the original was "We are unable to see you off as per the old code. May you be well". I think they changed the line to emphasize that Ashitaka could not return to the village anymore.
"Now, my poor, ugly, beautiful daughter is neither human nor wolf." I always loved this line. Moro can't unsee what her daughter is; a pitiful human abandoned as a baby by even more pitiful humans, and therefore inherently ugly. But her spirit, her soul, her strength, makes her beautiful. She is neither human nor wolf at this point, she is a bridge between two forever opposing worlds. Her poor, burdened daughter.
The dub version doesn't have subtitles matching the movie very well, because back in that time it was released they didn't think people needed subtitles when it was already in english, so the subtitles you have are catered to the Japanese version. 😊Glad you enjoyed the movie on of my total favs 😎
How gods, I didn't know I would watch this video till the end but here I am, crying still ! I Watched this movie in theater at 6 years old. And at 6 years old, I was already very awake spiritually but not like everyone else around me. I believed in gods, plurials, and spirit forest gods, not only possitive but all kind of gods. Like San, I was already so angry with humans, felt so alone, like a savage girl amongts humans, all the time, still feel like it, and Princess Mononoke was and remain the strongest, deepest recognition of all time. Like San, I'm hard to love, kind of violent at time, fire temper and tend to hate humans for destroying nature. I already had this little thinking all by myself at 6 years old : was I ready to die as a human being for nature spirit to live in peace and be saved ? Because as much as I hated it, I was, after all, human like the rest of them. I understand her so, so much. I'm sure I have reacted often like her without even intended to. Then I discovered Mononoke and Shintoism and realized that was my soul religion, as a lot of ancient, primal religions. Thank you for this video. I'm pretty sure I watched almost every Princess Mononoke youtube video out there and, yours was just... so pure. You kind of reacted like Ashitaka right about, without even knowing the rest of the movie. That was really soul cleansing for me to watch. Someone actually getting it and I understand so much the anger and the hopleness, the urge to do something and the sadness at the time thinking about all the sadness, the death in this world, the waste. I'm sure you've got taurus and pisces somewhere in your astrology chart, maybe libra but taurus was my first guess. Thank you for this video, really. Watch it again, and again, to get it all ! The lepers at the end, behind, discovering being healed ( made me cried right about when I discovered it...), for example. And just for you to know, the young girl at the begining (Kaya) calling herself "little sister" is not Ashitaka's sister, but his destined futur wife, tribe traditions there, and they just traduce it this way. That's why Ashitaka gave his cristal dagger necklace to San, meaning he loved her, clarifying his intention to her. Also, for the music : the cave music, I'm with you, it's mind blowing. My favorite song of all time, even when I didn't understand a single word ( frensh version kept it japanese so I didn't understand the word ) and so, didn't know that song was just made for me, and still, it could tear me appart just like that. Not japanese, not an animation, not as great as Princess Mononoke (well, I tried my whole life to find something just as great) but you should try Nell, with Jodie Foster.
you're probably not gonna read this anymore since it's more than a week since you've uploaded, but here are my thoughts on this film (my favorite of the Ghibli films): This is such a great movie about conflict, anger, hatred, nature, life, and humanity in general. and unlike most man vs nature stories which are so biased against humans (cough couh blue people Avatar cough cough), this actually provided a proper view from both sides. And as easy as it is to view Eboshi as evil, like you said, it's not black and white. Eboshi is very shrewd, cold, and ruthless, but she is also the only one who cares about the social outcasts like the lepers and the oppressed such as the brothel girls. She creates weapons that destroy and kill, but only to arm her people to be able to protect themselves. while it's not as obvious, the Gods and animals of the forest are as imperfect as the people of Iron Town, Jigo and the hunters, the Emperor, and Lord Asano and his samurai. It's such a wonderful movie! Glad you watched it and i support another commenter that you might wanna also check out "Nausicaä of the valley of the wind" with similarly strong nature and balance undertones. One of their first films and the manga was written/drawn by Hayao Miyazaki himself (given it was still unfinished as of the release of the movie but they did good with what they had, took him 20 years to finish the manga) Eboshi is the voice of human interest imo, not necessarily with negative connotations and more the struggle for us to survive and live well. She helped the women of brothels and took them in, no doubt rescuing them from very horrible conditions. That along with caring for the lepers i feel display a great amount of compassion for her fellow humans, but she's going about caring for them and them alone in all the wrong ways with no consideration for nature/animals. She's driven to make the irontown successful by any means because it allows her to provide for the ppl she loves. Meanwhile San and the wolves are the equally skewered opposition, only caring for nature and the animals, of course understandibly harboring great resentment towards the humans exploiting and destroying the lands, killing animals mindlessly and cruely. Even abandoning their own when San's parents threw her at Moro to save themselves. But they never consider humans to be a part of the ecosystem, something that also belongs in the natural order of the world.
A key feature of Miyazaki's works is that there are very few if any "true villains." Eboshi and Jigo, while capable of atrocities, are nuanced characters that have their own agendas. What we would call pure evil villains are caricatures of humanity and are not real, just insults we hurl to make ourselves feel better and to prevent us from humanizing, and hence, sympathizing with, people we don't want to understand.
I honestly wished that at the scene, when ashitaka is laying on the ground about to die, sweettalking san and the monkey throws the stone, you edited in the "Whoever threw that paper your moms a hoe!"-meme. Wouldve prolly died laughing. 😂
Mononoke Hime was the first movie I went to cinemas to see on my own initiative .. i was getting into anime at that time and both my parents hated anime (no quality, bad drawings etc..), but I was able to convince my father to go to a cinema with me since I was too young to go by myself ... too this day one of the greats .. great art, great animation, great story and cool characters .. oh and if the human vs nature, industrialisation vs myths and all the grey area of Mononke hime didn't give you enough of an existencial crisis ... watch caves of the fireflies .. I didn't know anything and the title sounded mysterious yet interesting .. had nightmares for months
@@HelTra91 loved it .. was talking how good it was for years after .. comparing every anime I watched to it and hating ordinary anime even more because "now I know how good anime looks, those are even worse"
This is one of my favorite movies. I saw it for the first time when I was probably a bit too young to really understand it, and parts of it were a bit more frightening (Like Okkoto becoming a demon). Turns out my mom happened to think it was a kids movie, whoops! But we still watched the whole thing and at least for me it is cemented as one of my absolute favorites. It also probably nudged me towards more of an appreciation of nature and an environmental world view. I enjoyed the reaction and feel a lot of the same things you felt when watching this movie!
I think this film is one of the saddest, most intense, and most educational. No matter how many times I see it, it still touches my heart. I hope you will watch the other Ghibli series as they are all good movies as well. If it's something close to the atmosphere of Princess Mononoke, maybe Nausicaa? My favorite is Porco Rosso. It is a cool, funny and pretty movie.
Everything he does is amazing. Castle in the sky is an old one just as good. And naussica of the valley of the wind. Both just as amasing set in these wonderful whimsical but serious worlds. Howls moving castle. All the English audios were done by Disney, and they are done beautifully. With some big name actors like Patrick Stewart
The language Eboshi uses in dub is too strong. I see the producer for English ver wanted to make her a villain but the original message wasn't like that. I saw all reactors watched in dub hate Eboshi until the end. I think you wouldn't if you watch in Japanese. Great reaction anyways
From ETSU (East Tennessee State University), trained by Japanese: BTW, your pronunciation was a good start! hahaha...that's how I sounded on Day One. haha, We all sound like that! No judgement. I recommend you grab a PHYSICAL HARD COPY of "GENKI : Japanese for Beginners". It'll serve you well for many years. Moh-No-No-KAY-Hi (Hee)- Meh "Princess Mononoke" (Hime: "He/hii-meh" = "Princess")
Kiki's delivery service was my first intro to Ghibli, but princess mononoke was my first intro to the brutal side of anime, which propelled me into other awesomeness like inuyasha, yuyu hakusho and so forth. But this really will date me.... the first time i watched princess mononoke was on our ps2 😂
I saw this multiple times in theaters it was the first Studio Ghibli film I watched. I love the movie. I personally lean towards iron town. I would say the bad guy if there is one is the emperor who covets immortality.
The movie is not subtle about seeing with eyes unclouded by hate. Yet I see most reactors fall into that same trap of anger and hate. Eboshi is not evil. Nor are the forest gods. No one is evil, and that's the point. They are blinded by hate and fear. In lady eboshi, her greed and need for power come from her fear of being helpless. That is why she gives power and purpose to the lepers and the brothel girls. She lifts up those around her, but her fear and hatred mean she cannot extend her compassion to the gods or lord asano who are more powerful than her. Likewise, the gods, who are brutal to humans, are not evil for doing that. They are protecting the forest. There are no sides in this film. This movie is sad and is tragic, but it is not meant to be seen through clouded eyes, or one misses the point. I grew up watching this movie and it has shaped my understanding of conflict. I'm glad you came out of it understanding its importance and knowing its message. it means a lot.
6:19 Unfortunately, those who are cursed cannot return to their village. In reality, those who contract an epidemic or break the taboos of the time and do something that negatively affects the entire village are banished from the "village." The curse received from the gods spreads throughout the village. That is why Ashitaka leaves the village as a "dead person," with no one to see him off. Cutting his hair is a ritual for the "dead" while still alive. It is the same ritual as when one becomes a monk or nun.
Amazing! Would love you to react to other Ghibli films, they're all impeccable. Howl's Moving Castle; Castle in the Sky; Crimson Pig; Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.. Check them all out, you should definitely react to them
Such a fantastic movie also Mononoke hard to type but easier to pronounce imo: mo no no kay I think i missed the part where Eboshi says a wolf's head can still bite after its been chopped off? Idk but seeing it happen (not for the first time with this movie) will never not be the most insanely awesome thing ever oh shit i paused at almost the right time 1:07:59 imagine seeing that face at 3 am because ur a wee one wanting to watch all the things after midnight but can't because u have school in the morning i'm still spooked at my big ol age of 33
Jfyi, Kaya isn't Ashitakas sister. She's in love with him and therefore she gave him her dagger (that she's only supposed to give to her groom; I guess, they were supposed to marry each other). She calls him actually brother, but that's more of a title (you know from other anime, that often older and beloved guys are called aniki, etc.) :)
good anime films-movies: ghibli studios / Miyazaki: Princess Mononoke Spirited Away Nausica of the Valley of the Wind Howl's Moving Castle others: Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (not really a single movie-film, but rather 3-4 part OVAs, but meh, it's legendary, Kenshin's origins) A Silent Voice Violet Evergarden (2019) Sword of the Stranger Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion Ninja Scroll maybe not anime, but whatever: Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie --------- some others (good for their time, and/o,r good animation though not impressed with them as anime movie-films: usually not good story/plot due to the obvious time-length constraints): Akira Ghost in the Shell Battle Angel Alita Blood: The Last Vampire --------- and there's some others that I think are suppose to be really good, but I've not seen them yet: Perfect Blue Paprika Your Name Weathering With You Wolf Children The Girl Who Leapt Through Time I Want to Eat Your Pancreas etc etc etc
Review "MACROSS PLUS" and "8th MS Mobile GUNDAM UNIT"! Great dubs! Macross had mother hecking Bryant Cranston (WALTER WHITE/ BREAKING BAD) as a MAIN VOICE actor dub artist!
Honestly, this movie means a lot to me and I’m just like you, really sensitive when it comes to nature, animals and their right to exist in this world as well as humans. Our race is so definitively greedy that we tend to want everything and anything just to destroy it later on. This move is a lesson and everytime I watch it, I’m really emotional because it impacted all my childhood (I’m 22 yo now but I first watch it when I was 11). Anyways, ghibli movies have always strong moral about war, ecology, life and emotions. This is so impactful (sorry for my bad English I’m French)
If you want to watch another ghibli but with a lighter tone (because this one is very emotional) watch owl moving Castle. Again strong themes but not as traumatizing
This is very much up there with my favorites & such an incredible story ❤ LIKE 👍 and SUBSCRIBE 🔔

Thanks for the reaction. Glad you're getting into the Ghibli greatness!
i love this film so much that i watch it eyery time i was sick since 2005. its a masterpiece.
well the mountain god is dead by that point the wolves\deer god are protecting the forest but I'm sure you just misspoke.
Goated movie - probably my favorite Ghibli film, along with (or right after) Laputa
My favourite anime ever! Thanks for this reaction.
Damn, great reaction to one of my childhood favorites, easy subscription from me
Ah, "Monokoke" is a bit of a tricky one for English speakers due to the "e" at the end giving "magic E" vibes! It's actually "mo-no-no-ke"!
more like "mon-no-no-kay'
So happy to see this resction. This is my absolute favorite film of all time. It has had such a strong influence on me.
I didn't know anything and the title sounded mysterious yet interesting .. had nightmares for months
out of curiosity, what did your father think of the film?
@@HelTra91 loved it .. was talking how good it was for years after .. comparing every anime I watched to it and hating ordinary anime even more because "now I know how good anime looks, those are even worse"
Wooohoo this is my absolute favorite of the Studio Ghibli movies love that you took the time to watch it
This is one of my favorite movies.
Even if the English version is kind of stong, the essence of her character is still the same 💀
Gotta watch "Nausicaa Valley of the Wind". It was the per-cursor film before the creation of Studio Ghibli.
From ETSU (East Tennessee State University), trained by Japanese:
BTW, your pronunciation was a good start! hahaha...that's how I sounded on Day One. haha, We all sound like that! No judgement.
I recommend you grab a PHYSICAL HARD COPY of "GENKI : Japanese for Beginners". It'll serve you well for many years.
Moh-No-No-KAY-Hi (Hee)- Meh
"Princess Mononoke"
(Hime: "He/hii-meh" = "Princess")
Forward my warriors 😢
Kiki's delivery service was my first intro to Ghibli, but princess mononoke was my first intro to the brutal side of anime, which propelled me into other awesomeness like inuyasha, yuyu hakusho and so forth.
But this really will date me.... the first time i watched princess mononoke was on our ps2 😂
I saw this multiple times in theaters it was the first Studio Ghibli film I watched. I love the movie.
I personally lean towards iron town. I would say the bad guy if there is one is the emperor who covets immortality.
You won't be reacting to the movie without the iron towns
This movie is masterpiece. Forests and Humans, it is an eternal issue for us.
I love the soundtrack in all the stuido Ghibli flims but the animation is top tier
Without the "iron towns", you won't have the screens in front of you.
Amazing! Would love you to react to other Ghibli films, they're all impeccable. Howl's Moving Castle; Castle in the Sky; Crimson Pig; Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.. Check them all out, you should definitely react to them
Such a fantastic movie also Mononoke hard to type but easier to pronounce imo: mo no no kay
I think i missed the part where Eboshi says a wolf's head can still bite after its been chopped off? Idk but seeing it happen (not for the first time with this movie) will never not be the most insanely awesome thing ever
oh shit i paused at almost the right time 1:07:59 imagine seeing that face at 3 am because ur a wee one wanting to watch all the things after midnight but can't because u have school in the morning i'm still spooked at my big ol age of 33
This is my fav Ghibli movie💙
Jfyi, Kaya isn't Ashitakas sister. She's in love with him and therefore she gave him her dagger (that she's only supposed to give to her groom; I guess, they were supposed to marry each other). She calls him actually brother, but that's more of a title (you know from other anime, that often older and beloved guys are called aniki, etc.) :)
San is Eboshi's daughter.😊
If you're doing Studio Ghibli, I highly suggest When Marnie was there
good anime films-movies:
ghibli studios / Miyazaki:
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind
Howl's Moving Castle
others:
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (not really a single movie-film, but rather 3-4 part OVAs, but meh, it's legendary, Kenshin's origins)
A Silent Voice
Violet Evergarden (2019)
Sword of the Stranger
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion
Ninja Scroll
maybe not anime, but whatever:
Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie
---------
some others (good for their time, and/o,r good animation though not impressed with them as anime movie-films: usually not good story/plot due to the obvious time-length constraints):
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Battle Angel Alita
Blood: The Last Vampire
---------
and there's some others that I think are suppose to be really good, but I've not seen them yet:
Perfect Blue
Paprika
Your Name
Weathering With You
Wolf Children
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
etc etc etc
THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE
Review "MACROSS PLUS" and "8th MS Mobile GUNDAM UNIT"! Great dubs! Macross had mother hecking Bryant Cranston (WALTER WHITE/ BREAKING BAD) as a MAIN VOICE actor dub artist!
kazeno tani no naushika(1984 )
mononoke hime Spirits origin
interesting you chose the dub for this one
I wish you did these ghibli movies in the original Japanese eh..a little sad
this movie is too hard for you to understand the feeling and meaning if all you know was "i hate this character"
Why dubbed man?
Ghost in the Sell, Akira, Paprika, Perfect BLUE
English dub...
Watch the opening and ending of 'go! go! loser ranger!' anime its very good and i am sure you will also like it...
DUBBED?🤦♂
I grew up on the Dub. This is one of the few dubs that's actually good. Honestly, I would ask to bring back the dislike button for this comment alone.
@@BoomslangSnipe ”i am biased because of nostalgia how dare you” womp womp 😰
My favourite anime ever! Thanks for this reaction.
