    Penn have come a very long way with their fishing equipment. I now use the Penn Fathom II casting special, and I love it. I used to use the ABU 6500 ct reels, but the Penn trumps them in every way. I think that Penn will become the main name in fishing here in the UK. Tight lines buddy. Ohhh yes, I have now subscribed to your chanel.

      Hi, I used to use the Abu 6500 ultra cast but now use the fathom 2 c/s also

    Been surfing with spinners all my life. I bought a Penn Squall llSD15. After a little practice and reviewing videos, I am able to cast 100+ yards. Very please with my "drum rig"

    Fiblink has great rod and I use them myself but have switched to using the Daiwa Emblem Pro 12’ casting rod paired with the Penn Sqaull 2 size 12 and 15. It is light but a bit on the softer side for me compared to emblem pro. I mainly use it for crab snaring so a solid backbone rod is more ideal for crabbing.

      I'll have to check it out. I like a softer action rod for pompano fishing

    I have a first gen pen fathom 2. I throw a pound on the in coming tide and 10ounces on the flood and out going tide here in alaska. Using either a 12 or 15 foot rod, i get about the dame distance. The tides and currents are extreme here. I can cast about 100 yards. Id like to try the fathom cast special to see if i can hit 150yards.

    Great review, and a good day out fishing! Looking to start Surf fishing in my backyard- the Pacific northwest. Squall looks like a hell of a buy for the money. Gonna pick one up, clean out the grease and oil it up for distance!

      I absolutely love the rod but the guide seats are starting to corrode from the saltwater. My next one I'll put a little wax around the guide feet to prevent saltwater from reaching them.

    I'm highly considering getting this exact model for kayak fishing grouper/king mackerel. I like the lighter feel of it compared to other conventional reels, but I'm gonna need to learn how to spool and retrieve line well on a non-levelwind lol. It looked at times like your line was moving side-to-side by itself as you retrieved it.

    I opted for the regular 15sd version as well over the casting special... there is no difference in the magnet system other than the knobby style knob...the line capacity is slightly less

    • @HalefuryxXx
      @HalefuryxXx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      CS version allows 16 settings of drag how many setting on the SD. I went with the Casting Special but I started to get the SD version instead. How is the SD version holding up.

    Hey I'm a new subscriber, my question is...I purchased the same reel and I would like to know does the weight matter when it comes to the drag not being able to slow the release because I have a 5oz weight tied on and the release is very fast...I've tighted the knob and star drag to max but the release is still to fast. Not sure if it is because of the 5oz weight.

    • @MaddogFishing
      @MaddogFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a knob on the side. Not the drag. tighten it up and use the flat adjustment to fine tune if your using different weights

    Thinking about getting one of these for my first conventional reel my main concern is how the line stays even on the spool? Again I’ve never used conventionals only spinning and baitcasting

    • @MaddogFishing
      @MaddogFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just use your thumb to guide the line back and forth. It doesn't have to be perfectly even but after using it for awhile. You'll get better at it.

    I have a tip for you you might want to use.. bait the hook on with High Tensile Elastic Thread 328ft Spool Dead Baits Fishing Tackle (ebay) and bait the hook to the zinker with SmartSolve 0.5mm x 225ft water soluble string, reel that dissolves quickly in water
    ( amazon ) ok I have penn fathom 15 CS put on a 14 ft daiwa windsurf .. I achieve a distance of 175 meter (191 yard )) try it you will stop shooting helicopters ...........

    At least show some respect for the fish and release them in the water by hand instead of chucking them out into the surf.
    Great review though, recently just got the same real and receive the casting special version tomorrow.
