Many many thnx for explaining KIA so nicely. I played it in a recent tmt..cudnt but got 2 draws with it. There is missed the concept...Attack whenever centre is locked. I learned it from ur videos. And its key concept. Keep more games in next videos. Thnx again.

Not sure how I missed this one for a week. The game against Gukesh remains the finest that Aditya has been a part of, and by a fair distance. Given the engines we had then (not that they do far better now in such positions), it took us days to find out where the mistake was. Every time, we thought we found a defence, there would be a move that would beat it though the engine could rarely see it till the game progressed. The immediate impact of this game was that Aditya never played French defence thereafter and started responding to French and Paulsen with KIA at least for some till till he realized its not everyone's cup of tea 😊
While we are used to seeing the KIA as Gukesh's stock weapon for the last couple of years, I dont think he used to play it then. I distinctly remember that his coach was surprised with his choice after the game and by the ideas he had used. Gukesh said he vaguely remembered some of them from a game he had seen long ago. That a 9 year old dared to step into fairly turbulent waters and navigate near perfectly was proof enough that he was special.
Now coming to the defence you have mentioned, I (or the engine to be honester 😊) do not believe it works. Qe8 is a common idea which Aditya didn't know then, but if played after white's Ng5, white can simply go Ng4 with the idea of Qc2 thereafter. For example 17...Qe8 18. Ng4 Nd7 19. Qc2! Now there is a mate to defend on h7 as well as the a4 pawn hangs. 19...Bg5 20 hg5 will be hard to defend after Ba3 and f4-f5 while 19...g6 creates the dark square weakness so white can shift back to 20. Qd2 with Qf4 and Nf6 ideas which should win...
More than if there is a right defence and what it is, it is Keats' "a thing of beauty is a joy forever" that manifests itself in such works of art and its a pleasure to see such artists meet with their deserved success. Its frustrating and nearly nonsensical that merely because the game lends itself to semiconductor assistance, many practitioners rarely venture further. The numbers associated with every result play their part accentuating it further...
