I love Eric's attention to the timing belt. I drove 6,500 miles in the summer of 2018. Most of it at 3,000 rpm. That is 50 revolutions per second! for a total of 15,810,810 revolutions. If the timing were off by any tiny amount, the engine would be destroyed.
In the episode Eric does math, gives a car a classic reach around, and explains the hammer side of every tool. Eric, these videos are just getting better and better.
Man you are best making very good camera angels and you make the viewer feel I do not find the word but feel happy maybe that's the world not only education in the automotive repair world.
Hey Eric I'm glad you found that removing the whole rad/fans assembly make sense. The other big advantage of taking it out is you don't risk putting a hole in it when ripping off the crank pulley lol :)
Timing marks are all you need on an EJ. They're one of the easiest engines to work on once you know what they're like. I wouldn't reuse a tensioner or timing belt on any car though. Love your vids btw
This video came just in time for me. I have to replace the timing belt, water pump, oil pump, and front seals on my Subaru GT Wagon. Only difference is I had a 2.2 swapped in due damage to the original engine. Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into your vidoes!! Bring on part 2!!!
+jimthecarguy Yo Jim! Hey man got a video coming out I think Friday that I am featuring the Jim The Car Guy Shirt haha and I bust on you about it a little too. It is a long vid though. Maybe it is the one after that I cant remember haha, any how got a big multi part show coming up on a tough one.
my dad had a 88 Subaru wagon..he drove it 10 years ..then my older sister got it she drove it all the way thru college. by the time it was gonna be mine frame rotted..rusted thru fenders etc... she made to the junkyard with 250k still running. great video..good tips on the timing marks.
Outstanding video Eric! From this one I can really tell how making a video actually impacts your time on a job. You did a great job of describing the work and teaching us the important points along the way. The camera work and lighting were outstanding. And as always, your personality made watching an absolute pleasure! Thanks!
Always enjoy hanging out in the shop Eric. Your commentaries crack me up. I've learned a lot here while being entertained. Wow, I could see how those timing marks could be easily mismatched. Love the "Don't tread on me" sticker on the tool box too.
A Subaru timing belt service video! This is like some sort of right of passage for an automotive YT channel. Everyone has to do one it seems. Glad to see your take on it!
South Main Auto Repair yeah I might have done one or two in my time. ;) Subarus are crazy popular down here in the mountains. We're kind of a mini-NE type climate.
When I worked at Subaru, the first engine rebuild I did on my own was on the 4-cam 2.5. Me being 17 at the time and obviously knowing everything, I timed it all up without asking anyone and I was 180 out! Bent 15 outta 16 valves. I thought I'd have to give my boss the classic reach around to keep my job but all went well! Thought I'd share one of my many disaster stories! Takes me back watching this, water pump, head gaskets, radiator, alternator done. What next? Igniter? Used to change a few of them if memory serves. Not much else went wrong, good cars the legacy I love them. Thanks SMA.
+Toyota Tech They are fabulous cars if they would fix the stupid heads from leaking lol. Haha glad you didn't have to pull out the classic move on the boss lol great story BTW...
Eric I love your videos, I am a mechanic so I always appreciate your videos for tips/suggestions on repairs, especially good repairs. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos I really do appreciate it. Also you should make a section on your channel of "Stuff breaks" because I always love watching how to fix the various things that rust destroy (I'm from Chicago salt EVERYWHERE) Cheers!
Awesome. I'll be doing the timing belt service on mine next summer. I felt pretty good about figuring it out, but it's nice to see a pro do exactly what I'm going to be tackling.
I have never placed much stock in those. It's what you can do, not what someone says you can do that counts. You rock anyway. This stuff is in your blood and I've learned a lot just from your style of doing things.
Subaru work is fun to watch. Boxsters are like a VW on steroids. I also like to watch Andre at Subi Peformance. He is a small shop like yourself, but only builds Subaru racing engines. He doesn’t talk much except when he switches to his native German (speaks English OK). His shop looks like an operating room. Must be a German thing. Enjoy. Thanks for the great videos. M Coleman
Good video. I need to do this job on my 99 Honda Civic 1.6 L. No problems yet but it does have 145K miles. I subscribed a while ago and I find your videos (and Ivan's) the best repair vids around. Keep up the good work! I'm up in Rochester about 3 hours away from you so I know what you go though with the rust and all that. EDIT: I just noticed Scotty Kilmer posted a timing belt and water pump video today. He did the job in 4 min. Haha.
Just for '' fun and giggles'' the pump you removed has a better flow than the one from aisin.... But hard to find... helps against cavitation.... Built and raced subarus, tested and confirmed... The impelor is different as you can see.... Just dont forget that your shop air can foul the factory torque specs!!!! Great video Mr O!!!!
Enjoy your videos. Be carefull using air tools on those bolts. They have a tendancy to strip out because of the aluminum engine block. Its safer to do original loosening and final tightening/torquing with non power tools.
oh goody...i have a 96 DOHC wagon. i did a timing belt job on my 03 sorento myself..wasn't too bad.....this should be a big help when it comes for the belt on the wagon...heard it was a nightmare with the dohc timing marks!! Now time to see how a pro does it.
Whenever I do a timing belt on one of these I get to kit that includes the water pump. I've seen the water pump seize up and cause the timing belt to slip. Tick tick boom!
Yeah on those I always remove the whole radiator a lot more room and easier. Also on them heads you can remove them with the cams still in them and reinstall them that way too so you can set your valve lash on the bench cause them valves are super easy to bend
Just a testament to your loyal minions, when I got my Dr O video notification this morning, it already had over 180 views! And by the time I got finished, about an hour later, it had over 300 views! OVER 300 views, at that time of the morning! I can just imagine all of these folks tiptoeing around the house in their PJs, making coffee, firing up the computer, quietly so as to not wake the roosters up, getting ready to see the worlds favorite car Dr perform his magic!! And the worlds favorite surgical assistant, Nurse Vanessa, at the ready, to help save the patient! Tune in tomorrow, to see if the Dr can breathe life into this ailing Subaru!
+roadkill5333 Well said Mr. Roadkill, you just described my morning! I loved the video so much I almost don't know what to say to Eric to thank him. lol This is a good one, great description and detail of the job, outstanding camera work, classic SMAR humor, a reference to Ace Ventura, and even a dose of daily shop reality with Mrs. O. The best on YT!
+roadkill5333 Hahaha well said sir well said , I actually played that out in my head because that is what I do in the A.M. to watch my favorite YT'ers!
I am about to do almost this exact repair. Harmonic balancer/pulley chewed up a key, remnants of said key wallered out the back half of the balancer bore. Lost both belts, but crank is unscathed and intact.
When I do Subaru timing belts, I have to use a long breaker bar against the frame and hit the key for a moment to crack the bolt because they always seem so tight
Look into getting a lisle 35400. Ir is a trim tool but because of its shape and size makes quick work of hoses. I find using pry bars can be clunky in tight spots and observed a similar situation here.
"now i need to get a pin so we'll come on over to my junk drawer" (opens drawer filled with snap on and mac tools) lol Eric if you ever need to clean out your junk drawers just dump out the contents into a box and mail it to me!
good afternoon #Erico yeah buddy i got a engine swap on a flex today engine came out this morning hopefully it will be all done by this evening have a great day
Toyota's on this side of the pond come with them OEM for water pumps and clutches for the manual gearbox. I think they also made some of the gearboxes on some of the older Toyota vehicles like the landcruiser/hillux. Good stuff. There's a 2003 Suburu WRX 2.0 petrol, 5 speed manual sitting on the drive of a local garage down the road, 120,000 miles. Its going cheap, i suspect the head gasket is blown. I'm really tempted to buy it, make it a repair project and tax and insure it for the winter months. My Toyota is cheap on fuel, but it doesn't cope with the the icy or muddy conditions i have to go through some mornings. I've always wanted a Suburu.
+Lorrin Barth Yeah. I think i would find it easier for the first major engine job to pull the engine. Plus the clutch is probably in need of doing anyway.
+Hawaiian F150 I see Eric using it all the time, I'm waiting for the the 3/8 version to arrive I ordered it from his Amazon store. Cant wait to try it out.
+Steve Rob What's up buddy. I have both 1/2 and 3/8 nano. They're awesome for their size. I try to use them all the time because of their light weight and comfortability, but sometimes I have to reach for something with more balls. Take care.
+Michael Herbert Hey Michael , well I decided on the 3/8 nano and get the 1/2 hammerhead later. It seems there's less room under the hood today with a full size impact so between the two plus being a top notch hack I'll have all the angles covered. LOL
Haha, I think Real Tool Reviews channel featured one of the nano's in a video. I have the 3/8 hammerhead and love it. Each one of my air tools has a specific use, and they all excel in that use. I can't expect a 450lb/ft nano impact to compete with a 900lb/ft impact. But the nano shines where space is limited. I basically love all of my tools, lol.
Not sure why the new water pump didn't have a backing plate on it. They put those on there to stop cavitation. I used to rivet them onto Chevy small blocks rebuilt ones. As the cookie cutter would flow less water.
i wont lie Eric thats lil ratchet makes me happy inside. i am buying one on amazon.ca, if the exchange rate wasnt so fucked up i would buy it on your store in a second. but as we all know Canada economy is going down down down :)
I spy with my little eye some pro gun stickers on your toolbox ;) Maybe you should do a video of your collection one day. I know that's not what this channel is about, but as a fellow shooter, my curiosity has been piqued. Thanks for yet another informative video; your channel absolutely rocks. I love coming home and chowing down while watching you work your magic fingers, lmao.
+ice44567 Lol I tried a few gun vids in the beginning but people are so anti gun they didn't like them on this channel. I was actually gonna put out a vid stating that I was gonna open an other channel "Eric O. Outdoors" I work on the cars because that is how I make a living, my real passion is hunting and shooting. I am a very avid bow hunter and love hand loading and shooting. But I feel I need to do it on another channel ya know.
South Main Auto Repair Roger, I understand. Even Google is anti gun and sometimes takes down gun related channels "on accident". Happened to hickock45 recently, twice within a few days. What can you do though. Regardless, I'd be a guaranteed subscriber if you do decide to start an outdoors channel :)
Oh I know I saw that, That guys is so cool too. I was wondering what the heck happened there for a bit. Haha FPS Russia is hilarious too! I am not on that scale but I do enjoy shooting and the science behind it.
South Main Auto Repair Yeah, he didn't deserve that at all. And I agree FPS Russia is great too, hehe. But I'm right there with you, I'm passionate about shooting as well. It's funny; I was trying to think of what I could send you that would actually be useful. This gives me some good ideas :)
I am a Smith and Wesson fan when it comes to hand guns and like my Remington Rifles and Shotguns. My whole family shoots, all the kids, well the boys any how, Vanessa likes to shoot and owns a couple hand guns too. We have always instilled safe handling and shooting practices to our kids to curb the curiously in them. We take it very seriously here. We don't even play pretend "shoot each other" games with nerf guns. All of my kids know about guns and what to do if you see one or were to find one etc. and EVERY time we shoot we go over the rules and how to check to see if it is loaded etc.. it has really payed off well IMO
Did you find a tile bit for Mrs. O? With all the cameos lately, I'm starting to wonder if Mrs O. is getting ready to start her own YT channel, maybe a home renovation/home decor theme, am I right? I wonder who would garner more subs, lol?
+Brian Richards Well she just did lay down a whole tile floor in the basement bedroom lol. This was after she did a whole stone back splash in the kitchen
I bought a Dayco timing kit for my '04 WRX (twin cam engine). Every thing fit except the belt itself (too small) and one pulley that was different (the upper small one on the driver's side. I had to cut the mounting bolt because it was a single bearing pulley rather than the OEM twin bearing piece. Otherwise the bolt would have bottomed out. Buyer beware.
since gaits is using Chinese parts do you have a performance for timing belts companies for subaru , ever use continental, i saw a review where they use japan and German parts this is for a 2010 subaru outback 2.5
That's One of the reasons Toyota is never gonna be in Bankruptcy The timing chain is the best Invention for a Car to be reliable, To me Whoever invented the Timing Belt was a Retard
Ivan's tips come in handy at times.Don't mention the words "Ford Explorer or biceps" to him.He might react funny.Vanessa's new hair style really suits her. That impact wrench can go where no impact wrench has gone before. "Beam me up Scotty" there's a leak in the after- burner, Sorry-it's not a Subaru !!
I don't think I understood your remark at just after 22:00. Did you mean that these are non-interference engines, so you can't destroy a piston if you make a mistake with timing?
They are interference engines, but when the timing mark on the crank is lined up the pistons are in the middle of the bores instead of up near the valves, so if the cams turn and open a valve they won't make contact
Hi. I have an ej18 in a 1995 Impreza that I paid to have timing kit done 6 months ago. I want to visually check it now to be sure I don't have bad valve timing because my #2 and #4 cylinders only have 75/78psi compression. I don't have any issues except weak power uphill and higher speeds. Is there a way for me to visually check the timing with removing the timing belt covers? Using spark plug holes and maybe a small camera too, at most? Thanks!
I love Eric's attention to the timing belt. I drove 6,500 miles in the summer of 2018. Most of it at 3,000 rpm. That is 50 revolutions per second! for a total of 15,810,810 revolutions. If the timing were off by any tiny amount, the engine would be destroyed.
first time I have ever seen someone properly lubricate their air equipment in a TH-cam video. very cool it says Alot about your operation.
In the episode Eric does math, gives a car a classic reach around, and explains the hammer side of every tool. Eric, these videos are just getting better and better.
+Nathan Vogt - Yah! Did you see how Dr. O tickled it a little before giving her the beans.. O.O =-b
+Hawaiian F150 Well like Mrs.O always tells me , ya just can't go right for the gold!
+South Main Auto Repair hahaha !! Thinking that way will get ya seconds ;)
Man you are best making very good camera angels and you make the viewer feel I do not find the word but feel happy maybe that's the world not only education in the automotive repair world.
+g johan It is all about the happy man!
Hey Eric I'm glad you found that removing the whole rad/fans assembly make sense. The other big advantage of taking it out is you don't risk putting a hole in it when ripping off the crank pulley lol :)
+motoYam82 Yep I always listen to advice and give it a try if it makes sense right? And I am not afraid to admit it :)

+Baxrok2 Yeah it adds some time for sure :) Thanks!
Every tool has a hammer side!
not just tools...a have used a phone like hamer in the school :)
+Adam Budai I was an auto shop teacher and was tempted to use those GD phones as hammers - kids these days.
+Bill Johnson True story :)
Always enjoy hanging out in the shop Eric. Your commentaries crack me up. I've learned a lot here while being entertained. Wow, I could see how those timing marks could be easily mismatched. Love the "Don't tread on me" sticker on the tool box too.
+wyattoneable They would have to take my guns out of my cold dead hands sir!
A Subaru timing belt service video! This is like some sort of right of passage for an automotive YT channel. Everyone has to do one it seems. Glad to see your take on it!

A classic reach around move. Some of the things that you come out with are just hilarious !
+DaveSender66 What it is a real move right?
Awesome. I'll be doing the timing belt service on mine next summer. I felt pretty good about figuring it out, but it's nice to see a pro do exactly what I'm going to be tackling.
+ejbcomp What pro? Never call me a pro , I know way to little to have that title yet
If not you, then who? Fine. I like watching a guy who knows more than me and seems really $$ing good at what he does. Lol. Keep doing what you do.
ejbcomp I think for an advertised pro you would need to watch ETCG, he has a lot of badges and certifications. I don't have a single one....
I have never placed much stock in those. It's what you can do, not what someone says you can do that counts. You rock anyway. This stuff is in your blood and I've learned a lot just from your style of doing things.
Your videos are awesome, i have been trying to watch this video for the last 4 days but I keep falling asleep before the end. Its not you its me lol.
Haha I know the feeling I always watch Yt when I am dead tired!
You’ll never make it to part four!
M Coleman
Another day in the life vid !!! Starting in your driveway .. Yip yip
+Jason Curry :)
Aisin water pumps are OEM for some Volvos too. Good pump.
+Adrian Kingsley-Hughes and they last 300.000km before they go bad on Volvos
Forgot, really liked the 'gun rights' sticker. I have 'em plastered all over my place, range bags and truck. Good for you.
+Emitt Malone We need to stand up for it! Only one way they would take my guns :)
Thank goodness for the turbo juice!!!!!! Best videos
+Paul Morales Haha yes sir!
Good video. I need to do this job on my 99 Honda Civic 1.6 L. No problems yet but it does have 145K miles.

+Steven Pothaczky Haha he is the man!
I bought Aisin water and oil pumps for my 93 Toyota 4x4 p/u when I replaced the timing chain. They are OEM for Toyotas since Toyota owns them.
Nice work Eric. I mostly put Aisin water pump and timing kits on my customers cars. Their good stuff mostly OEM on Toyota's.
+and mechanic Yes very well made IMO

+JD A Haha!
She’s just trying to keep him on schedule. 😄
Thank you for your time Mr South Main Auto.
Great video ! The Nanos are great little guns for tight place's.
+N Smith You bet ya!
I like that sticker, Eric! "Don't tread on my gun rights"

love doing subaru timing belts
+UBBERTANKER Gravy and biscuits!
Great work and video! Looking forward to part 2.
We used to use Exxpress tire too, back in my dealer days.
oh goody...i have a 96 DOHC wagon. i did a timing belt job on my 03 sorento myself..wasn't too bad.....this should be a big help when it comes for the belt on the wagon...heard it was a nightmare with the dohc timing marks!! Now time to see how a pro does it.

Whenever I do a timing belt on one of these I get to kit that includes the water pump. I've seen the water pump seize up and cause the timing belt to slip. Tick tick boom!
Can't ask for better. Thanks for the video.

Hey there viewers and welcome back to the self made auto channel 😀
I see your customer is smart; he wrote down oil / filter info on his left front frame, near the BATT.
Can be done only once? Anyway, in my country they put down the mileage where the last timing belt change was done.
Great job Eric! I wish your shop wasn't so far away :'(
U do an excellent job Eric I got a 2007 Honda Ridgeline also love it keep up the good work
11:42 I'm fairly sure you say "so meow" lol
great video, I dont see too many of these online, great info.

Eric needs to go watch more super troopers like right MEOW!
Astro nano is amazing you made me get one
+Matt Smith All right !
Now this is a fun video. Thanks.
i really like the way you do things. smart cookie.
The cooling fan bolts break off here in Wisconsin too.
Still don't see how Mr O does this all day, and be able to walk the next day? I'm glad I have a brand new car with a timing chain.
U get use to it
"now i need to get a pin so we'll come on over to my junk drawer" (opens drawer filled with snap on and mac tools) lol Eric if you ever need to clean out your junk drawers just dump out the contents into a box and mail it to me!
thought the video was help full about to tackle my 2001 outback
good afternoon #Erico yeah buddy i got a engine swap on a flex today engine came out this morning hopefully it will be all done by this evening have a great day
I did hear MEOW around 11:43. Nice Eric.
+jake ounce What are you talkin bout meow...
+South Main Auto Repair Yea, definitely sounds like you were impersonating a cat at 11:43... :)
Not only a Napa timing belt but, a paint pen from Napa as well. ;) I'm watching you. Lol
+Edward Shen Hey I like Napa :)
Me too. :]
Hi, I am sure you have plastic cookie wheels, they sacrifice themselves before the aluminum does. Have a great day!
+Rob Carstuff Yeah I do but I am old school
I put a Bosch water pump in my Nissan Frontier that was stamped "Made in Mexico" LOL
+ICU2 lol must be right next to the chevy parts manufacturing place haha

+Lorrin Barth Yeah. I think i would find it easier for the first major engine job to pull the engine. Plus the clutch is probably in need of doing anyway.
+zoidberg444 Usually the turbo engines don't have leaky head gaskets. They use different head bolts seem to hold up pretty well.
Head and block cracking twin cammer!
What kinda spray is that you used with the impact and doesn't it really help ErickO?
Is nice to see your loving wife taking a look in the garage
How about a challenge. Do a video without air tools!! It'll be fun.
+Joseph Lupo he did one when he replaced his own power steering pump at home.
+Joseph Lupo Nagative sir, I would get the shakes and pass out.
Eric, Have you ever done a tool box tour?
Can i join the mrs o fan club?another great video eric keep em coming
you can always buy more tool boxes mr O.
+wade rigsbee lol I am running out of shop space :)
+South Main Auto Repair You can send the extras to me!
Nice , man I like that nano impact.
+Steve Rob - Steve, I bought one and man I tell ya, it is rock solid. I also bought the small 3/8's and it is super easy to use.
Nice job so far, Eric. You should raise the car a bit so it's easier on your back. Take it from someone who's sitting here watching in pain.
+wysetech2000 Yeah I know , it was on the lift too.
if you dont have a shop vise to put a pin in this style tentioner you can use a jack and car frame but i usualy just use a new one for peace of mind
South Main Auto Repair
Roger, I understand.
South Main Auto Repair
Yeah, he didn't deserve that at all.
Always Remove radiator & fans as an assembly on Subaru`s. I do it on any 'T"belt & water pump job
As a customer, I would have liked you to change all the rubber belts for new ones, no matter what.
Thumbs UP on The Don't Tread sticker
My new Astro 1128 won't just "zip" anything off that's not broken loose first .. How much line pressure are you using.
since gaits is using Chinese parts do you have a performance for timing belts companies for subaru , ever use continental, i saw a review where they use japan and German parts this is for a 2010 subaru outback 2.5
Great video Eric,I'm working on 2001 forster and suspect timing issue, can this be verified with scan tool?
Hay Eric have you replaced a timing belt on a Toyota v6. I’m thinking about doing mine and would like to have your expertise as a backup
Toyota Corolla /Matrix have timing chains good for 400k miles
That's One of the reasons Toyota is never gonna be in Bankruptcy The timing chain is the best Invention for a Car to be reliable, To me Whoever invented the Timing Belt was a Retard
Ivan's tips come in handy at times.Don't mention the words "Ford Explorer or biceps" to him.He might react funny.Vanessa's new hair style really suits her. That impact wrench can go where no impact wrench has gone before. "Beam me up Scotty" there's a leak in the after- burner, Sorry-it's not a Subaru !!
+Tom OConnor Haha yep he has some good tips :) Vanessa has the same hair do she always does :)
Thanks!
No brake cleaner on this one ????? Just kidding! Great vid as usual.
+maestra1st It is in part 2 :)
Timing belt on Subaru says 105 months or 105,000 miles I have 70k miles but I'm at 105 months can I wait in your opinion and if so for how long?
Is there any way you can do a video on 2006/2010 impala lower intake manifold gasket, with the cross over pipe
I've seen a fixture that holds each of the cams sprockets to each other to keep them in time while taking the timing belt off and reinstalling it.
Oil your tool with Kroil? Never even thought of it, lol. Works good?
The EJ25 is a great engine minus the head gaskets.
Have you any videos changing the head gasket off a 96-97 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5 L DOHC engine? I'm still scouring on here .
