My latest thrift find is 9 yards of pure silk ribbon embroidery. There are 6 yards of hunter green and 3 yards of magenta. I don't embroider and actually didn't know what it was until later. Naturally I had to bring it home for SOMETHING. I think it would look great woven through some eyelet lace but, I don't have any lace 😁

I had a great luck lately finding aluminium crochets in cool colours (the grey ones are a bit boring) in a variety of sizes. I bought 12 in the last month (2 or 3 at each thrift store), in blue and pink and gold. Just looking at them makes me happy. I'm not crocheting anything at the moment (summer is too warm to crochet), but I'll be ready to tackle any project!

Since I learned from you to look for fabric, etc, by thrifting I have found amazing things. I often think to myself "Evelyn would love this". I recently found ten different lace trims on the factory " cards"...they were manufactured in a local factory that closed decades ago. My best haul recently included four yards of medium blue cotton/linen blend, four yards of crepe back satin, which nearly caused me to scream out loud in the store "1930's dress", and two window curtains that are enormous....they are a rust colored 100% linen and I rhink I will make overalls with the fabric. I could go on, but I won't! I cannot thank you enough for what you do....you are bringing in more peopke to the " solution" as opposed to the "problem". Happy sewing!

What great finds! I love thrifting in the "linens" section. Curtains, sheets and bedspreads are some of the best sources of cotton/linen, especially the vintage ones. Happy sewing!

About that doily, find a large enough vintage frame at the flea market or a thrift shop. Old doilies make spectacular wall art. I have "inherited" quite a number of them from my late mum and aunts and I have framed the most impressive ones.
So far, no visitor has entered the house that didn't point out how much they loved them!

That soutache cord!!! What an amazing find!! If we're honest, though, they were ALL good finds. You have such a good eye for these things! My best find was a couple days ago - a Singer 401A complete with case and 8 extra feet. I was on the way to pick up my old, dying machine when I found it. So now the new one is getting a tune up with my machine wizard, and I get to go get her in a couple months! It was perfect timing.

My husband thinks I’m crazy because I keep getting old lace etc whenever I see it. I just got a huge roll of cotton lace that you put ribbon in. I have no idea how much is on it but it’s a lot. We are just getting out of lockdown here in Ontario Canada and I haven’t been in a second hand store in a year and a half. I have been feeding my addiction lol with auctions and Facebook market place. I just got a large amount of Irish linen tablecloths etc for under $10 Canadian. There are a few stains but I plan to dye them and make lovely clothing. I have also started buying vintage sewing machines and fixing them up. I plan on keeping one of the treadle machines and learning to sew on it.
My mom used to give me a clothing allowance and I could buy two new things or a whole lot of second hand stuff. This was back when admitting that you bought second hand was looked down on. She taught me how to sew when I was 4 so I knew how to alter things as well. I used to get a lot of complements on my clothes. I have that haul of Irish linen that I just got so I need to get back to it.

I’m new to sewing, my friend got me into it, more quilting path, but I am interested in all things. Well, you have your mind blown if you went lawn saling with us! The majority of my material is from lawn sales - one haul got me a large Rubbermaid bucket filled with bits and pieces and scraps (I had such fun ironing and organizing it all) plus we all trash bags full of large scraps and pieces, including many nice large full pieces, all for $1! A couple weekends ago I got 12 quilting rulers, a cutting mat, a roller cutter, small bucket of white materials like muslins and all sorts, a bag full of nice material, a large baggie full of embroidery threads, a bobbin holder…and more for $33, I even got a fantastic Brother serving machine at a lawn sale! Needless to say, I love lawn sales! I love seeing what you have found!

Always love seeing your thrift finds. Two weeks ago hubby and I went to a barn sale and we both found some treasures. I got 30 spools of thread . Hubby had fun picking out spools with me. They were marked 50 cents each, but the lady only charged $10 for all. I didn't even ask for a discount! I also got a sewing machine for $10. It was marked $20. The tag said it needed a tune up. The lady said it works, but is slow. Love getting discounts when I'm willing to pay the original price.

I am very lucky to have in my town a shop called Scrappies. It takes donations of stuff that can be used for crafts and sewing and sells them at very reasonable prices to raise money for children's charities. It's so much fun having a look to see what I can find for my stash, there's something different everytime I go in and its stuff that might well have ended up in landfill. Its win-win!

Fun finds! I like treasure hunting too. I bought a jar all different notions. I really thought it had a lot of buttons in it but when I go it home I found there was only a couple of cards of buttons and whole lot of different kinds of hand needles. There was also a darning egg and some very small wooden crochet needles. There was also thread on wooden spools.

Glass candy dishes! Mom, Grammas, aunts, Great Gramma, etc. had them (19teens onward). If I find one I intend to stick (double-sided tape) a magnet in the bottom so the pins won't spill out if I knock it over.

I have 4 beautiful wool skirts that I bought last winter. Then, in an effort to drop my A1C I went on a diet and lost 55 lbs. So to keep the skirts, I opened the 2 side seams and inserted a twill tape draw string in the smooth front and along the elastic in the back. Now, as my weight plays games, I am able to adjust the skirt s every time I wear them. Oh, Evelyn, don't get old! Trying to deal with old lady health issues and still work full time as owner of my own accounting firm, I don't dare make any alterations permanent. From sunny New England in the eastern US, thank you for your hard work on your channel!

Oh Brass pins! I would like some of those. Im probably old enough now to use them and not accidentally leave one or two in the carpet. That used to be something I couldnt fix. Liked the first skirt too, and I chuckled when you said you would change the buttons on it -as recently, my daughter said to me "Mum why do you ALWAYS say - 'you could change the buttons on that!' " Sure - you cant have the old buttons, they go on something else. Since being a teenager Ive kept a selection of sewing bric a brac so Id have too much if i didnt sort and part with some - I recognised some of those laces in the box as ones I had once purchased probably from stores such as Bayards and Barry and Roberts stores. I kept the striped bias binding red and white and still have some left. I liked that too. I havent seen ric rac about much if at all these days. Thanks for the interesting video!

100% linen clothing is a must have for me since it is so hot and humid here in the summer. The skirts you found are lovely and so useful! Linen is so expensive to purchase new, so I scour eBay for pieces. My clothing sewing skills are beginner so the most I've done is straighten a curved hem or tightened an elastic or two :) My main fabric purchases are 100% cotton for quilting, and like you, I prefer to sew completely from my stash rather than buy for a certain project. eBay is great for that, too. Lots and lots of estate sale stashes come up for purchase there at rock bottom prices!

Those brass pins are mandatory for bobbin lacemaking. We use them to prick the patterns and twist the thread around the pins. Lace stays on the pillow for a long time and can't have it rust. So so jealous of your find.

That glass 'basket' is called a bon-bon dish. My Mum and Gran had a few, and now they belong to me. The traditionally held decadent little chocolates but Mum also used them for fancy nuts etc at afternoon teas/ Christmas. It's such a shame that no-one in Australia goes all out for parties or holidays these days. I'm as casual as you can get but I love to go all out for a party.

I love thrifting, I plan my week around which thrift shop I visit, so yes it is an addiction for me. I do a lot of different sewing so I never leave a new zip or good quality sewing thread, newer brands only unless really a bargain as thread can deteriorate over time. Laces and trims yes please, snaps and hooks esp vintage, embroidery floss esp silk. Latest find a gorgeous 100% lambswool blanket in amazing unblanket colours, currently being make into a coat with a satin sheet, also thrifted but new as lining, great video and glad I am not the only thrift addict in the world

I've never seen sewing supplies in charity shops here in Ireland, but couple of times I managed to buy stuff like the shoe box contents online. Just assorted lace bits, various colours, complete surprise to the buyer. It's incredibly inspiring having those little remnants and trying to apply them in projects! Used some for jewellery making and sometimes the whole project would stem out of one little scrap :)

Ooohhh...forgot to add....a king sized bed dust ruffle. It is white eyelet, cotton. I am planning a white sheath dress with the eyelet as tiers over it. I might use the flat part of the dust ruffle as sewn in interfacing. I think it could work seems to be the same type and weight of fabric as purchased interfacing.

    • @monaanz6754
      @monaanz6754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've used the flat foundation dust ruffle piece to make garment patterns. It's easy to draw on and durable and clings to fabric when laying out before cutting. I don't think it will withstand frequent washing and wearing as interfacing though.

I’m hoping that if I can get NDIS, then I’ll actually be able to go thrifting. I can’t drive, and it’s expensive to get a taxi (and I need someone with me anyway), so I’m not able to do the regular thrifting, or go to new places. Or… I have had to stop myself from looking at all the amazing vintage fabric and notions that are on Facebook marketplace, because they usually require going there to pick through the stuff, and that’s not possible for me right now. And so sewing all this lovely stuff available, but not being able to get there is a real downer. So hopefully it’s something I can do in the future.
What would I have not left behind? The eyelet laces! I love using them for the necklines of Victorian style chemises, which I also wear as nighties as well as for under my corsets. And I’m currently trying to get together enough similar lace to make a very lacy and full of pintucks Edwardian blouse. I’m thinking maybe the Folkwear patterns one. They offer two views- one full of insertion lace and pintucks, and one a bit more plain. The only issue being that they both button up in the back, so I’d definitely need help getting into and out of them (though it’s not unusual that I need help dressing anyway, so it’s not a big problem).
I definitely need to get on with making myself some blouses, because it seems that modern blouses are all made with really short arms in mind. And I’m only 5’4, so I have no idea why all these wrist length sleeves are only 3/4 on me. Surely my arms aren’t that long?! What about those women who are much taller than I am? What do they do? So I definitely have to make my own blouses, and I can make them as lacy and poofy sleeved as I like!
