the sad part is you're drawing a false equivalence. Although what you're saying is true you'll still see plenty of old folks (into their 90s) smoking like chimneys. You don't see very many Tess Holiday's make it to that age...
Based Rob it’s not common but my grandfather was 400 my whole life and bed bond the last 10 years of his life. He was 82 when he died. I think some people are just stronger. He also drank like a fish and smoked until the end.
Everyone wants to believe they’ve hit the genetic jackpot and will be the exception. Truthfully, it’s not even about making it to old age, these people never seem to consider what kind of quality of life they’ll have if they actually do make it 70-80 at that size. Life for a 300+lb 80 year old ain’t pretty.
I'm not surprised. Remember that reddit thread where they accused Doctor Mike of being fatphobic because he suggested that morbid obesity is unhealthy and can lead to heart disease?
I remember that. I hate how people get offended so easily, even if you try to explain to someone about the risks of obesity can lead to, you would be called fat phobic.
@@SynterraSteen I won’t judge, don’t worry. People should discourage obesity, it is not a good life style at all. Instead, we should encourage healthy eating habits and stuff like that. The appearance of one being morbidly obese is quite shocking...who would embrace that honestly? It’s not really attractive, it’s unhealthy and concerning.
@@Avis-Finch the elephant in the room really is the reason why some people have unhealthy eating habits. They are so often linked to socio-economic status and access to good quality food together with education levels. It’s a big societal issue that needs to be addressed in order for it to be easier for people to make the choice to be healthier.
@@SynterraSteen I don’t think that you are fat phobic. Fat phobia is when you think less of someone and think they don’t deserve love or good things because of their weight. As many people in the comments have pointed out, you can love yourself and want to be healthier whatever that means for you (losing weight or putting on weight). I think fat acceptance has stemmed from people who are healthy but just don’t fit beauty standards being considered “fat”
My husband died 2 yrs ago. No, not covid. Obesity. He weighed over 512 lbs. When they tried to shock his heart, they couldn't. Because the paddles weren't strong enough. But sure, obesity is healthy. He had just turned 44.
My partner means so much to me, I can't imagine losing him at 44. I work at an ER, and unfortunately have seen this happen. I am so so sorry for your loss. ❤
I am disabled. When the body positivity movement started, I started seeing more and more photo shoots of people who were amputees or had dwarfism or were in wheelchairs and it was massively inspiring for me, even if my specific condition never came up. Seeing this section of the movement die out in favor of curvy, classically beautiful women has been a huge disappointment. It reads to me that my body is less valuable, less important, that I will always be confined to the role of the “after school special.” It’s a pain difficult to explain or express.
I'm with you, worse is when we're actively pushed out of the movement and told it was never for us and we're not really marginalized because we're not fat enough, and then they turn around and talk about how they deserve respect because they're actually very healthy at their weight
Sadly, when you have a "minorities banding together" thing, a lot of time the majority within that minority will band together and try to push out the other minorities. I'm a trans man and the amount of gay people I've seen who say they want to get rid of the T in LGBT so that they can be more accepted by the mainstream and so they can stop pretending to care about trans rights is way too high. Not to mention TERF lesbians. Humans are just evil. :(
I have psoriasis and this movement help me come to terms with I will always have patches and I don’t need to hide it, which help me improve my mental health
shouldn’t loving your body mean wanting the best for it? eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, etc. your body is more than just your physical appearance.
body positivity is: "it's okay if you don't look like the standard of beauty, that doesn't determine your worth." NOT "You can be healthy and be obese, gaining weight is not going to affect your health."
The issue is that there are so many ways we can be unhealthy that may be encouraged by the things we do. Unfortunately most of those things can't be seen, so those who are plus-sized are constantly shamed. You can want the best for someone's health, but this macro scale bullying is not okay. There needs to be representation of people with different bodies in Media. Whether those bodies are perfectly healthy or not is irrelevant because those people exist. Some people cope with really significant mental health issues or trauma with eating, and some people have biological things that make it hard to lose weight. and I'm just going to say that by continuing to Fat shame people, you are not going to make it any easier for people with plus-size bodies to do anyting about their health.
Lol.... as a former 400lb guy who used to think, "I'll never become a diabetic."... oh wait... that was until I did. Caught it early and decided to lose weight. It has been one hell of a 4 year adventure. I like your style ma'am. Stay well....
Good for you :) I'm a personal trainer now and have literally lost friends over this. I dont like to pressure people into excersise but the mere fact that im a trainer caused people to stop talking to me :( I think that there is soooooo much misinformation about fitness and they literally make trainers sound like nazis. Its weird to be a fitness professional between the two extremes of HAES and the all the fake fitness gurus on Instagram who promote unhealthy relatio ships w dieting :( . So many of the HAES people have youth on their side still and don't realise how bad it'll affect them once they hit their 30s 👀 Makes me worry. Like you have to catch it early to undo damage, so some of these ladies may have to live w permanent consequences from these choices :( and there won't be much that can be done to reverse the damage at that point
@@SkylaSugar stick with it :) its so HARD. if it was easy to be healthy in America there wouldn't be an obesity problem :P just do your best and don't ever give up on yourself ^^ Don't be afraid to connect with trainers and dieticians online if you need help :) many offer cheaper rates for zoom/group sessions where you can make friends and have professional support at the same time 😉
I wish I had seen videos like this back when this movement took off. "Healthy at every size" is one of the WORST things that ever happened to me, health wise. I'm now almost 300 pounds with sleep apnea and pre diabetes, working as hard as I can to qualify for bariatric surgery, because back when I started gaining weight I saw these girls and the videos and articles pushing this garbage and thought "wow, absolutely incredible. I can still be beautiful and healthy, weight is just a number. I don't need to change." Obviously I am to blame for my own actions and choices, and I fully own up to that, but I truly don't think I'd have made the ones I did if this lifestyle wasn't so glorified and pushed so hard on young women.
they have ruined and even ended many lives. i’m sorry they lied to you. i’m glad you’re turning it around. wish more people would see through their bs sooner
I’m glad you were able to see what this movement truly does to people and the damage it causes to people’s health. I hope you can get your surgery! And accountability and self awareness is a really good thing to have. Idk you but I’m proud of you
Censoring the word "obese" is like censoring the word "eczema". It's... it's a health condition. It's a medical term. Edit: I've seen a lot of responses about how certain taboo words used to be medical terms, and I agree. I'm not sure if "obese" had gotten to the point of censoring, but I'm not part of that community so it's not really for me to say. Thanks to everyone being so respectful!
@Andrew Murray Nobody is saying biological sex isn't real. People are saying that gender is not as simple as male and female, but no-one is saying that there are more than two sexes except for the people who say people are saying that.
Pretty sure she wouldn't be driving the fat acceptance train if she didn't get sweet modeling gigs from companies that want to exploit her size as a PR/marketing stunt.
I don't think bacon said that obesity is healthy just that its not so clear cut as people seem to think it is. Ive had friends die that did everything right. and be a perfect weight and still have a heart attack and die while the over weight smoker survived his heart attacks and cleaned up his act . I think there is a whole aspect to health that people don't even acount for sher will. I think bacon was trying to indicate the range of health is slightly bigger than previously thought. Its definitely true that being over 300 pounds will catch up eventually but so will being under weight and some how being under weight is considered good and praised in some ways aspesually in the fashion industry. I think equality and acceptance needs to be met while also addressing health mental and physical in a more wholeistic way. People should never be ostracized for trying to look after themselves better and no one should be shamed. Shame just feuls the fire from my experience.
Finally someone with some common sense !! 😅 It's all about companies targeting the newly growing and un-exploited obese demographic with marketing campaigns to sell shit. Has nothing to do with body positivity or SELF-ACCEPTANCE actually these companies feed on the self-consciousness of women !!! Thats how they sell us shit we don't need for prices we can't afford 😒
These communities really make me think of the phrase "misery loves company". They want to be surrounded by other miserable people who also feel 100% helpless to make any changes or improve their own health, mobility, and overall well-being. So these people will naturally react with anger when anyone puts in the effort it takes to make changes. So toxic.
Why do they use the "eff your beauty standards" hashtag? The only "beauty standard" they're refusing is weight related. Tess still uses makeup, has her hair professionally done (and almost certainly dyes it, probably even has extensions too), wears designer clothes, wears heels, has straight and whitened teeth, etc. What other beauty standard are they addressing? Because weight is definitely not the only beauty standard, and Tess ticks all the standard beauty boxes aside from weight.
She is addressing the beauty standard relating to weight, which is a very strong limitation in our society. She is under no obligation to address other beauty ideas which she doesn't personally find limiting
As someone who is currently overweight but is trying to get healthier, I'll say this: If you are happy and comfortable with the state that your body is currently in, that's incredible and you should do whatever makes you happy. But, you shouldn't allow yourself to be fooled by the illusion that being overweight isn't unhealthy, because it absolutely is, in almost every case.
@@springchickena1 “almost” because (for example) bodybuilders can be overweight according to bmi but still healthy, and someone who’s barely in the overweight range (like 5 lbs) probably isn’t gonna run into a lot of health problems from that
@@LiterallyLike Also because of how BMI is calculated it skews higher for tall people and lower for short people. So a tall person could be a healthy weight but technically be 'overweight' (Honestly BMI is kind of flawed in determining individualistic health bc it was designed for studying population averages, and stuff like hip-to-waist ratio and body-fat precentages are better for determining personal health)
Along with lungs and heart. Kills me when I hear a friend of mine struggle to breath just from walking up 6 stairs, not to mention how much that must kick his heart into overdrive.
My highest weight was (gulp) 425lbs over 20ish years ago. Let's be real. I couldn't ride the amusement rides, could barely wipe me arse, and the worst was how I saw and felt about myself. I'm very appreciative of the remarks & comments from others. It truly made me look at myself and said enough!!! Now I'm in the 160ish range (25lbs is extra me and yes, I would love to have it removed and wear a sundress, but meh..money) and I'm extremely active and get this... I'm seriously thinking of hiking the PA section of the Appilation Trail. Shhh don't tell my fam! I'm almost 60 and I'm even more active and adventurous than I was as a teen!!! So come on, my fellow chunk-a-dunk-chicks. Get moving!! You are going to love the lighter side!
Thank you! When I was young, I didn't have any comorbidities. I don't care what those who are big time overweight, every women wants to feel sexy, beautiful, and intelligent. When you're super heavy the one (of many) stigma for me was, I knew people thought I was unintelligent. But thank you for your kind and encouraging words!!!!♥️
I have MS. And I got a brain lesion from it that was very large and took away the strength in my legs. I couldn’t walk for a year. And I was almost 300 pounds My doctor asked me “If you were 100 pounds lighter, do you think you would be in a wheelchair?” And that was the ah-hah moment I needed. Because he was right. My body wasn’t prepared for something like a disease or a brain lesion and the last thing my weak legs needed was extra weight to carry around. I’m now 170 pounds and I’m at the gym 5 days a week, and walking my dog at the park the other two days. Weight loss isn’t about looks, or clothes; it’s about being prepared for when life happens. I was only 24. I would rather be not “body positive” and able to fucking walk than be in a wheelchair and miserable.
I have MS too. While I don't struggle with my weight I never really paid much attention to my health before. I had a rather poor diet and never worked out. The diagnosis have motivated me to do everything I can to stay healthy for as long as possible. Stay strong my fellow ms warrior
Jonaz Fhauk it’s a different life once you get something like MS. You never think it’ll happen to you until it does. Much support and happiness to you!! ❤️
Great work. I have MS too. While there are no conducive studies saying being fat affects MS, i know overall it will help my health. Down 110lbs myself.
No one should be bullied for being overweight (or any reason) BUT OBESITY SHOULDN'T BE NORMALISED. Being 5 kg overweight is fine, 50 kgs overweight IS NOT.
@Sylvie I was a big child in primary school because I was short and people told me to kms, I wouldnt expect you being calm if I ever told a child to kill therselves. Grow up
Great video. When I was 264lbs or 18.85 stone I was a supporter of this very dangerous movement. I used to make excuses all the time for my poor choices and I laughed made jokes, and would say “oh I’m king sized” just to hide how miserable I was. I couldn’t sleep right I often slept to 10am i had bad kidney pain, looked very sick, was always hot. Now I have lost around 100lbs and I feel amazing and am so much happier
If people are “healthy at every size” that means everyone. So how are people dying from not eating enough? Or having severe health problems because of not eating? It goes both ways
@@thisbydumplings what I meant is eating disorders go both ways. You can have issues where u keep eating even if u are full. That’s an unhealthy rls with food. An Ed doesn’t just mean u don’t eat enough.
@@thisbydumplings also malnourishment can occur in obese people. Malnourishment just means you have so little of the correct vitamins and minerals that your health starts to be badly hit
Meth heads, crack heads, heroine addicts, anorexics, etc. tend to be thin, are they healthy? Is it healthy to be suicidal over gaining 5 lb.? I hear it too often. is it healthy to start smoking again because quitting made you gain weight? Is it health to isolate because you fear being shamed? Is it healthy to actually physically abuse people because they are fat? Is it healthy to, as one actress did, try to survive on bits of cotton soaked in 0 calorie juice because "I can't be fat!" until she collapsed on the floor? Is it healthy to trust any industry to tell the truth when lying makes them way more money? The diet and fitness industry would be out of business if they ever really told the truth. For now, I rest my case.
I was born with a facial deformity. I joined the body posi movement because it was absolutely horrible growing up and getting bullied for things i couldn't change even with surgery. And I joined...and nothing. I even got ridiculed by these grown women in these groups and mass online accounts. It's body positivity only if your obese. I also struggled with an eating disorder which made me fluctuate between skinny and obese and honestly...that movement is TORTURE.
hey, i hope youre doing okay! i understand how it can really ruin our self-esteem but all of us can learn how to accept ourselves more. it's so sad that people judge others by things that they cant even control. i personally think the concept of body positivity is good, but the movement? it's shit. it's full of bullies, elitist and people full of anger and jealousy.
@@KristiLEvans1 Everytime I hear the "Bullies are actually just insecure weaklings" speech in any type of form my whole body cringes. Do people really not see the hypocrisy in that ?
One of my childhood friends, who was already fat as a kid because of the unhealthy habits and parents who couldn't say "no" to anything, became morbidly obese at 17 and had to use an oxygen mask during night because he developed sleeping apnea. He ended up dying from a heart attack at just 25, being so obese firefighters had to cut out the window to take his body out... His sister, who was also my friend, was able to change and get healthy and she's still doing fine. I believe in respecting people and I fight against fat stigma in medicine as a healthcare worker, but I can't with people who say being obese is harmless. It's NOT.
I actually didn't think it was possible to die from a heart attack at 25. Oh my goodness. That's horrible. I feel horrible for them. NOBODY should be dying from something completely preventable at the age of 25! I've got weight issues too, I am sticking to low carb rightnow. Trying to lose weight. Why? Because, I'm getting older, and I realize that being very overweight is very dangerous.
I'm a heart doctor, so this is something I've thought about on a regular basis. Although thankfully, I have not found many patients buy into the idea that obesity is irrelevant to health. I've been nervous to cover this (just cos I'm a chicken and didn't want to face an angry backlash) so I'm glad to see this sensitive and balanced take. Kudos, and good job.
I have arthritis, and I appreciate that my sister (a doctor of sports medicine) said to me “every extra pound of weight that you carry is like 4 extra pounds on your knees.” I’m not morbidly obese, but I’m not exactly in shape lol. It motivated me to hear it that way. She wasn’t calling me “fat,” she was telling me that I could control some of my pain by making changes within my own control.
this reminds me of when adele lost weight and was shamed for "submitting to beauty standards". smh, can't even get a healthier life without getting cancelled these days.
I agree with you but let’s not forget how hated she was for her body before and how people are now acting like she got better when she managed to have an extremely successful and lasting career while being fat. She looked nowhere near the examples in the video, Adele surely is happier with herself and I’m happy for her.
Adele got so much hate and calls for cancellation around that time. First shamed for loosing weight and then she gets accused of Cultural Appropriation when she styled her hair into Bantu Knots.
Prior to her weight loss, the only thing I knew about Adell was that she made really crappy music, and was as big as a house. But now, I know she has improved to being only chunky, and is apparently an entertainer (for some)
as someone who lived as a 370 pound human being for over half a decade, I just hit 168.8 recently. I never want to live as a big person again. I appreciate that being bigger shouldn't make your life miserable in terms of how others treat you, but at the same time... it's miserable on its own >.
One thing that really bothers me is that in mainstream media, “curvy” and “obese” are often grouped together- they’re not the same thing. Curvy originally meant that you live a healthy lifestyle and are a healthy weight, but you naturally have larger bust, butt, hips, etc. Obese is a medical problem where you are overweight and do not live a healthy lifestyle. They’re often used interchangeably, and it’s quite frustrating for people who are actually curvy to be categorized with obese people.
@@ingridespinoza106 I think it’s relevant, because the main point of me saying this was to explain why they’re not the same thing and how it affects people. I’m sorry if it didn’t seem like that.
Thank you for saying this. It really is frustrating. It's like it's used to soften the blow of being overweight. If they say "I'm curvy", they associate it with Marilyn Monroe, being desirable, sexy, etc.
Also, calling out skinny girls for your insecurities shows that you don’t actually accept yourself. It’s gross behavior. Don’t tell someone to eat a cheeseburger unless you can handle being told to put one down right back at you.
I will actually back that up! And coming from a fat girl who had done this, I stand corrected. And I will admit it was from my prejudices & insecurities.
In general we need to stop commenting to each other about appearance, unless there is actual concern for a person’s well being (for example, your friend looks very ill so you want to help). We should become equally obsessed with commenting on people’s kindness, or empathy
I used to work with a girl who was naturally thin, very small. She eats whatever she wants every day, even fast food burgers and fries if she has a craving for it. But working with her, I noticed she never finished her food-usually ate less than half. In March when the world was basically shut down for coronavirus, I adopted her eating habits. Thanksgiving was last week so it’s been eight months. I have lost 70 pounds so far. I am not dieting or depriving myself of anything. I eat what I want when I’m hungry. I just don’t OVEREAT anymore. I no longer obsess over food and have even found myself almost forgetting to eat a couple of times when I was busy just living life. I used to wonder how anyone could possibly forget to eat. I look and feel so much better. And for the first time in my life, I feel pretty confident that I will finally be able to maintain this time. Still have another 25-30 pounds before I reach my goal weight of 105-110, with a BMI in the low 20s.
You know, I think this is the approach to things that’s the most healthy. I spent my youth being overweight, probably obese, and became fixated on it - dieting, “watching what I ate,” and generally feeling awful about myself. Learning to care more for myself, to love myself more, is what ultimately led to me normalizing my weight. That’s different than learning to love myself just the way I am or accepting my lot in life. It’s important to recognize the grief society gives you over ones weight and, in turn, the grief we give ourselves over our weight. Body positivity seems to miss the mark - it’s self-positivity. Once I recalibrated these internal things, it was so much easier to take care. Just as you say, eat whatever you’d like - just don’t eat tons of it. Don’t eat at every pang of hunger; give it a bit, drink a glass of water and wait an hour. If you want some chips and soda? No problem, but put those chips in a bowl and buy the little cans of soda, then put the bag of chips away. Eating right from the bag or cracking a 2liter of soda just invites overeating. Eat half those fries on your plate: so it’s maybe wasteful, but who cares? Food biodegrades - it’s sustainable and no one is shipping half-eaten fries to Africa for those kids or whatever. At the end of the day, feeling ok about yourself is a combination of accepting yourself, recognizing your shortcomings, and trying to do the best you can for yourself. Asking people to accept that obesity is OK is looking for answers outside yourself and it’s as reasonable as demanding that people think you’re attractive. It’s not a reasonable ask.
That’s great 😃 I’m also trying to lose weight again. Mindful eating is always a good hair to adopt. Hopefully I can be as successful as you in the weight loss journey
The thing about BMI is that health is more nuanced than what it suggests but they take that and RUN with it. For example, at 16, I was 175 pounds, 5’3”. This is obese by BMI standards. HOWEVER! I was a double sport athlete (playing softball and competitive swim) who had well-defined muscles and could deadlift almost 3x my weight. But you can also obviously tell the difference between someone who is heavy due to muscle composition and someone who is heavy due to fat.
100%. The BMI scale has done that to me before (it sucked because it was hurdle when I was joining the military), but the ugly truth now is that it’s accurate. I am not The Rock, lol. Just regained a bunch of weight. Using the outliers and applying it to themselves (when they know damn well it’s not muscle mass) is either denial or a plain ol lie.
BMI is mostly pretty useful. Where it really fails is that it misses "skinny fat" people who are a "healthy" BMI but have unhealthy amounts of body fat. This represents about 30% of people with a healthy BMI so it's a lot of people, unlike the low single-digit percentage of people who are classed as overweight or obese due to being very muscular. Also doctors and health professionals tend to miss skinny fat people and often don't recognise that their body composition is unhealthy, whereas the vast majority of doctors could tell that an athlete with a BMI of 29 wasn't actually fat.
Also body frame size plays a role. Some people naturally have bigger frames so they will weigh more (and or denser bones). And smaller frames can be fine on bmi but actually carrying excess weight. It's why there is talk of lowering the obesity threshold for asain people to 23. Frankly, bmi is most accurate for white people.
The BMI work based on HOW YOU LOOK !!! When you're in the BMI it's not meant you're Healthy, It's meant you're LOOKS HEALTHY ( Looks NORMAL ) below the 20 is the PRETTY GIRLS GAME you're either Pretty or Prettier and that's is when your face features ratio came in !!! For examples If Tess was in the BMI she would be out there competing with KENDALL with GIGI,... and The harsh truth A PRETTY FACE IS A PRETTY FACE no but... no reason, no society opinion, no personality.... You could call Amber heard by a lot of bad words but i DARE you call her "UGLY FACE" !!! And Rumors has that people made her stay fat because it's easier for her to made MORE MONEY when she doesn't have to compete with others "Pretty Obisety" Girls !!!!
Wait till she gets starts getting more flab under her arms and her thighs she may look good now but later on she's going to totally regret it. It's not all fabulous it's out to be. I'm like 5'3 220 lb age 51, I don't consider myself healthy weight I know I need to lose 70 lb I think.

My dad literally died from a heart attack that was caused by obesity. I can't believe it's still an arguement that you can be 200 pounds overweight and be healthy.
That was the case with my younger brother - he was basically a hard core alcoholic for over 35 years and when he was younger no one could convince him that he was, in effect, committing slow motion suicide. He died one month before his 57th birthday from Pancreatic Cancer and cirrhosis of the liver. I can’t see why anyone would defend being obese or heavier is in any way a heathy way to live. I’m not advocating shaming or making fun of people with a serious weight problem but it shouldn’t be glossed over like it’s OK, because it’s not.
@@bdflatlander i am sorry to hear about your brother and i agree people should not be shamed. Shaming an alcoholic isn't going to stop them from drinking. @@johannduplessis3467 : Thank you for your kind words. You’re right in that shaming an alcoholic won’t make things any better or will have much, if any, effect in making them want stop drinking. That motivation has to come from the alcoholic themselves and my brother never had the necessary motivation to want to quit drinking. My dad and I offered to pay for the best rehab available but it’s like the old joke about leading a horse to water but what the horse really wants to drink is whisky. I was talking to a former boss about my brother right when he was becoming seriously ill because I thought that it would force me to have to take some extra time away from work to help him. My boss’ father died because of his alcoholism and he told me from his experience with his dad that the only help an alcoholic wants is help to keep drinking. That was the case with my brother too.
Tess unfollowed someone who had idolized her bc the woman shared her weight lost journey and it was..."triggering" for Tess. But somehow, she's brave enough to sit across from a thin personal trainer and be around actual models. Im sure it has nothing to do with the cameras rolling.
When I heard one of the people say, "if you lose weight for medical reasons. You're not body positive!" I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly fell out of my head.
Sounds to me like if you have cancer and you broked up with smoking you're not body positive. P. S. I didn't learn English so many mounts already, so Im sure I did mustikes
This reminds of the disabled people who get mad at other disabled people for saying they would prefer to be able-bodied if they could. Appearantly it's "ableist" to not want to be disabled
You're also not a moron! Obesity WILL kill you. I am a health care worker. If you don't believe me, Covid will give you the answer. 90% of our Covid fatalities were plus sized patients.
I honestly detest what Tess Holliday stands for. My friend and I started our weight loss journey. I was 310lbs and 5'9" and she was 275lbs at 5'6". We worked hard, but then when Tess Holliday blew up, my friend completely stopped. She looked up to Tess. I kept trying to convince her to keep going and that we've come so far. But she called me fat phobic.. and went on saying "I'm comfortable in myself. You're the one with a problem for hating yourself enough to change yourself" I never forgot those words. I told myself that I'm going to become as fit as I can be to prove my friend wrong. Now I am 177lbs 19% body fat. I love my new lifestyle. My diet is super awesome and sustainable. But my heart breaks for my friend. She is now 320lbs. She still follows Tess Holliday.. and I am so angry. Because I want my friend to be healthy. But I've been black listed by her because of this movement. We don't talk anymore... But I still see her sometimes and I see her struggling with her movements. It breaks me inside.
Sorry to hear that but as the saying goes “The Ends Justify The Means.” No matter how warped or unhealthy the situation is. Only your friend can decide if she wants to escape her condition. Tell her that her body is her House and Car the places she has to move and live in. Once that breaks down movement in any form is painful and restricted. Ask her to look at herself and ask her why should she want to look and feel like that if she doesn’t have to,suffer like that if she doesn’t have to,cut her life short like that if she doesn’t have to!? She won’t hear you unfortunately but one day her body will give her the proverbial bill of sale and she will not have sufficient funds to cover the tab. Brace Yourself. I hope she changes soon.
I'm so sorry to hear this Unfortunately this is the reality But when she gets sick and actually realizes that its wrong Please help her (even tell her I told you so) but help her
I weighed 864 lbs at one time but now I'm down to 404 lbs. Being proud of yourself is AWESOME but it's unhealthy. And the weight DOES kill you. Every one wants to be a victim. I'm responsible for the weight I gained and no one else.
There’s nothing more important than health. I’ve wanted to be skinny my whole life (while maintaining a healthy weight), but I’ve recently become very ill & have been losing weight at an alarming weight. Health is the ideal, never take that for granted.
at 16 I was 300lbs and couldn't lose weight, and did start thinking, "this is just me". If this is you, GO TO YOUR DOCTOR! I had thyroid disease and celiac disease. I'm now 30 and a healthy weight, and feel 100x better.
I’d like to say this makes me feel better, I’m in England so don’t quite know much about lbs but I’m 17 and around 195lbs. Knowing with enough work I can be healthier is really amazing- thank you (I hope this isn’t offensive haha)
it's inarguable that overweight people have a lot of health issues overlooked or attributed to their size. but it's also inarguable that having hundreds of pounds of fat on your body has profound health effects. im always so baffled by the all or nothing mentality people have. its possible for the medical community to need to do better without obesity being harmless.
I got on medication and dropped almost 30 pounds that I really didn't have to spare. When I switched medications (due to side effects) I immediately gained all that weight back, plus an additional 25 pounds. I went from being underweight to overweight in a month. When I brought this up I was dismissed. My family wasn't great about it either, and so I just put up with it. Eventually I got off that medication and over a few months my weight returned to its baseline, no changes to my diet, exercise or lifestyle needed. If you have a typical relationship with food (which I get people struggle with, I do too) and you can't lose weight, it might be something to discuss with a doctor.
I’ve heard people argue that e-cigarettes are fine and don’t cause health issues. People will justify just about any habit they have especially if it’s addictive.
@@hersheycat6526 I always justify e-sigarettes as being healthy on the short term. Nobody knows what it’s going to do with my body in 10-20 years. People feel healthier with e-sigarettes because there’s no tar in it.
@@bassa8333 still not good for you. Even smoke from wood in a campfire is bad for your lungs so you’re never supposed to stand down wind of smoke. It may be better than a regular cigarette but that’s like hitting your head with your fist as opposed to a hammer. Sure your fist is less bad but it’s still horrible for you.
That’s me. I’ve been smoking for about 25 years and I’ve always had great blood pressure, blood work, good BMI etc. But even though my numbers are great and visually I look fine, I know im not heathy simply because I smoke. There’s no way that a person causing damage to their body, wether it be smoking or over eating, can say they’re healthy.
“Fat people exist and deserve respect regardless of their health and size” and “Obesity is bad for your health and shouldn’t be glorified” are two thought processes that can and should coexist. And as you pointed out earlier in the video, overweight/plus sized is NOT the same as obese. Some people are plus sized by nature. All the clean eating and exercise will not make them skinny, and that’s fine. Obesity is a different story altogether, often involving underlying medical conditions or disordered eating. Fatphobia is definitely a problem, in that it dehumanizes and degrades fat people, under the guise of wanting to “help them”. Not to mention the impulse of many doctors to simply say “there’s nothing wrong with you, just lose some weight” and completely ignoring the very real issues their patients may have. There’s also the very relevant topic of how our modern diets have affected people’s weights, as obesity has very obviously skyrocketed in recent decades. And that’s not even touching on how something like race and gender identity intersects with weight. All in all, it’s a layered issue that requires a lot of nuance. Unfortunately, the mass media doesn’t do too well with nuance... My mom has recently begun to lose weight, not only for cosmetic reasons, but because her knees have been giving her trouble, and for fear of getting diabetes (she had diabetes when she was pregnant with my sister and me). To say that my mother was healthy when she was heavier, borderline obese, would be a lie. She was and is a whole person worthy of love and respect. But she was not healthy. It’s worth noting that only through building up her self esteem did she find the willpower and drive to getting healthier. We need to foster self love, without enabling the glorification of an unhealthy lifestyle.
I understand how some morbidly obese people came to such extreme positions regarding to their weight. I'm not obese, but I'm overweight. I'm 5'7 and quite athletic, but I wear a size 14. I have various medical issues that make it easy to gain weight and extremely difficult to lose it (note: my issues are chronic conditions, and they wouldn't disappear or get better if I lost weight. Beside those, I'm perfectly healthy and not at risk of developing any further problems due to my weight). My weight makes me feel ugly, gross and masculine. Every time I'm interested in someone, I stop myself from flirting with them because a part of me is convinced that my weight will gross them out, and that they'll see my advances as pathetic, disgusting and ridiculous. There's parts of my body I never show, not even when the weather or the occasion would make it the most practical choice. Fashionable clothes never look remotely good on me, and I have to put an immense and time consuming effort to find affordable clothes that look somewhat OK on me, and despite that, 9/10 times I look myself into a mirror all I can think about my outfit is how it shows how disgusting and fat I am. I know, rationally that there's nothing wrong with me. I know my BMI it's not that far into the overweight category. I know that, compared to other people with my same medical issues, I'm relatively 'thin' and generally way healthier than I could be. I know that I'm not a lazy pig, I know how I constantly struggle to keep my weight in check, I know that if I truly had 'let myself go' I would be morbidly obese. But emotionally I don't see myself like this. I see myself as a fat, lazy, disgusting land whale, who deserves to be judged and ridiculed, is unworthy of love and can't possibly come off as attractive for anyone. Obesity is a trap. The causes that leads people to become morbidly obese are complex and often hidden or overlooked. Everyone looks at obese people and think they are fat and 'simply' have to go on a diet. Obese people know that diets aren't a solution, but nobody listens to them. Nobody helps them understand the real causes of their obesity. An obese person feels trapped in a body everyone tells them is gross and disgusting, without a realistic way out of it. Nobody can live their whole life feeling like they are disgusting and unworthy of love and respect without starting to be a bit crazy in other desperate search for a way out. The body positivity movement is helping many of them to feel less like dirt and more like people.
No one is asking people to look like models... having an extra 20 pounds shouldn’t be judged because that could be do to genetics. But 200 pounds extra is not genetics. I guess people in third world countries can’t carry these “fat” genes?
Donkey Time there are fat people in developing countries and if you thinking looking at some critically emaciated children on google dot com disproves this, you have a hollow brain. perhaps begin working on that by defining fat vs obese and overweight bc 20+ pounds would be fat. 200+ pounds would be obese. they are very different conversations and no one is conflating the two but you. what op is saying is that there are legitimate health conditions that can make it easier for someone to become obese. a very obvious example of this is having a thyroid condition. the factors that can create obesity are much greater than lazy + food.
“I can’t walk half a mile but I know I’m healthy” Yeah, you’d have to be a healthy weight and paralyzed or some similar condition in order for me to believe that
A lot of these activists admit to that and what's worse is they think it's a valid disability. They think deliberately disabling themselves puts them on the same scale as people who have mobility issues that CAN'T be fixed. It's really gross to watch how these people will more than happily rely on mobility aids as an enabler rather than an aid. I saw one activist admit they were more than happy to disable themselves to the point their family members/friends have to care for them and wash them because "that's what you do for people you love" 🤢
I cannot stress enough how open obese activists are about this fact and how they don't care. They genuinely think that their obesity disabling them puts them on the same wave length as people who are literally paralyzed and that they're entitled to use mobility aids to enable their mass than to help them move around like every other physically disabled person uses them for. There's no 'wake up call', they just rely on whatever allows them to maintain their state like a pile of wet paper towels.
It's so scary to think that some people might listen to this stuff and die earlier because of it. I can't believe that someone who's really happy with life and themselves would want to lead others to an early grave.
This mentality of quote you wrote is a killer mentality. whose on earth is it business and labeling when it comes to your relationships with your body?
It’s because all doctors are FATPHOBIC and it’s all a conspiracy to erase fat people from the world, don’t you know this?! (I’m being sarcastic, but honestly - I’ve seen this argument more times that I can count.)
Kiana over here making documentary quality videos that look like they went through a team of writers and editors, like seriously. The amount of effort and time you put into this is insane and I'm living for it lol.
You’re right, she’s great. She is pointing out the actual truth at a completely documentary level. All the research is incredible. I’m not obese, but I’ve got other addiction issues and she is leading me to make some big changes in my life. Thank you Kiana. Edit: Also one of my best friends died this year from obesity caused heart failure. (Proved by autopsy.) I’m cleaning up my act because, let’s face it, you’re right and I’ve lost one of my best friends. Edit (again): Londo Bacon says all of this while appearing to be within a healthy weight range. I wonder whose paying her in this case.
Her comment was definitely a little confusing and it took me a couple times to understand it, but what she is saying is that according to her bmi stats (which is bs anyway as i was technically obese according to the bmi scale when i had less than 5% fat but I was into weight lifting pretty hard core so I was definitely skinnier than your average 6foot tall 260 pound person.) Anyway she wasn't really saying she wouldn't be obese if she was 7 feet tall although I'm pretty sure she would still be considered obese at her highest weight. What she was saying is that since the shorter you are the higher your bmi at a particular weight and since her height and weight combination puts her in the obese category and that it comes with many health problems and she was saying that she can attest to its inaccuracy because she in her mind is 100% healthy which just simply can't be true. Even if she doesn't currently have major issues I can tell you for sure that she will. As a mechanic and a metaphor lover I will put it this way. If you have the proper diagnostic equipment you can identify multiple detrimental problems with your car without any readily apparent problems like a check engine light but if you go under "pending codes" you can have a bunch of problems that just haven't had time to manifest in a clear and observable way
@steven manwaring A bit long agree. Basically she thinks anyone who weighs the same should all be considered the same whether that’s obese or not. Which is BS cuz there’s other factors that go into determin8ng if someone is obese and unhealthy, like height, fat, muscles and also there are some people who are just built big. I think most elementary school kids would even understand this. also agree the BMI scale is bit BS. According to it I’m obese and have been since I hit 160lbs. If you looked at me, you wouldn’t even think I was fat. Most of it is IN MY BELLYYyy. I’m def not as healthy as I should be, but like, obese? Seems like a stretch, in my situation. although doctors are now saying that the BMI chart is just a guideline and that everyone is different and depends also on the person and their genes and other shit.
It's so bizarre seeing college educated people use terms like "correlation does not equal causation" to distort the truth. We learn those tools to deseminate what's real and what's not, to see them used to gaslight is dissappointing.
Same. You should never feel entitled to berate or disparage someone because YOU take issue with how they choose to show up in the world, but science is still science.
"Being forced to lose weight for medical reasons is not body positive." So dying/becoming immobile is body positive? WHAAAT?! These ppl are out of their minds!
"Being forced to lose weight for medical reasons is not body positive" That right there is an admission that body positivity is inconsistent with a healthy lifestyle
I find HAES extremely disrespectful because it takes away all personal freedom, saying “oh being fat is genetic you can’t change it” when in reality, eating less and exercising more does work. Your body is always under your control and its so disempowering to preach otherwise.
Very great point to make. This is one of the things I really hate about these movements. No one can take our power away. No one can tell me I can't do it because I DID DO IT. And guess what...I'm not special. Anyone can do what I did.
I like this comment. I have always held this opinion. When I embarked on my weight loss journey from obesity at 16, yes part of it was because I wanted to appear better looking to others, that's always going to be a factor. But by far and large I did so because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, I was tired of being a victim of genetics.
I used to be obese. I had confidence in my looks, but I still knew i wasnt healthy. There is a difference between telling yourself that you're beautiful at any size, and telling yourself you're healthy at any size. I loved myself enough to be confident most of the time, but eventually i loved my body enough to eat right, excercise, and lose the weight.
Yep, "belonging to a community" where you have to obey the high command, and indoctrinated rules, under threat of ostracisation, is control of cult 101.
“health at every size” should be changed to “love at every size” since, as you said, obviously it’s not possible to be healthy at every size. You can’t be 5’5” 300+lbs like Tess and be healthy, that’s just statistically impossible. The same way you can’t be 7’2” 100lbs and be healthy. Our body can’t handle extremely off-putting ratios like that. And that’s why you never see morbidly obese 70 year olds. It’s one thing to be fat and be confident in your body. It’s another to be obese and claim to be healthy and spread the lie that obesity has no impact on your health.
exactly and i totally agree! i know I'm not completely healthy at 5'8 and 206 pounds but since I'm growing and I'm still very active and my doctor has confirmed that I have a wide frame with thick bones and a lot of muscle I'm not worried. However, if I did weigh 230+ I would be concerned for myself. I think everyone deserves love but like you said not everyone is healthy.
Apparently morbidly obese people who can't get up or move on their own are referred to as Burners by some emergency crews. Cuz if there's a bad house fire or the plane is going down, they will burn to death not being able to evacuate without 5 plus people to help carry them out.
@@millie209 Of course, everyone deserves respect. The extreme side of the fat acceptance movement is dangerous though. It's promoting disordered eating much the same as pro-ana groups do. For some reason it's ok to call those groups out and "skinny shame" - maybe because thinner people tend to experience privilege due to being more societally attractive than their overweight counterparts.
Nike having plus size mannequins is great. I think it makes it easier and more accessible for oversized people going to the gym. When I was fat I couldn’t get good exercise clothes.
Also the size of those mannequins still was a normal healthy size. Not to mention much closer to the actually size of the general population, and since mannequins are meant to show how the clothing would look on a person it makes sense to show it on a body that is more like the average body
You don't need special exercise clothes or gym clothes. That's just marketing. You need something you have freedom of movement in. Sweat pants and a baggy t-shirt.
@@lovereiki7144 I agree, but sometimes having specific clothing can equal a change of mindset when it comes to working out. For me sweat pants = comfort and gym leggings = workout time
i mean, that's a pretty farfetched comparison. some people are genetically predisposed to being overweight no matter how healthy they are. smoking is a choice, expensive, and it harms more than just yourself. even if someone were to choose to be overweight, at least they aren't putting anyone else at risk.
@@hachikos except they are being morbidly obese puts you at far more risk health wise meaning time spent treating you is being wasted when it could be being used on people who despratly need medical help for issues outside of there controll. and people who are naturally overweight are a obvious exception of course no one is saying they should have the same standards applied to them as people who arnt genetically deposed to gaining weight no matter what they do
@@wilmagregg3131 idk i think my point still stands. nobody wants to be obese, some people just have very unfortunate circumstances regarding money or mental health. if it puts their life at risk, of course they need medical care. that's like saying a smoker dying of lung cancer is wasting resources. both are a result of unhealthy lifestyles, but that doesn't mean their lives have no value. just as smoking is an addiction, so is unhealthy eating, and breaking both habits (especially if it's all someone has ever known) is extremely difficult. i understand your perspective, but i think the medical world's resources are being wasted by things much more ignorant and dangerous than obesity at the moment.
I had a friend who was very intelligent - she studied philosophy at a college I never could have gotten into - who insisted That although smoking was unhealthy the particular brand of cigarette she smoked were actually good for you. The thing is, Tess is has a very pretty face. That’s the only reason why she is a model.. there are plenty of women of her size I see on a daily basis that the model industry probably would never give chance cause they aren’t conventionally attractive.
The main advantage she has over other plus-sized models is not so much her pretty face, but rather the fact that she has a relatively thin face and relatively thin neck. If you just look at a photo of her from the neck up, you might guess she's overweight, but not so morbidly obese. She has a pretty face, but it's her smaller overall neck size that gives her a more striking appearance when compared to other large women (Ex. Mama June pre-surgery).
My dad is an EMT, he sees the tragic cost of obesity every single day. The people who die young, those who are housebound. Those who are in incredible, unimaginable pain. What people like this are doing is so unfair to them!
It really is so sad to see people that have been overweight the majority of their lives. They've never been able to just walk around without 100+ pounds draped over them... I'm around 40 pounds overweight since around March and it sucks! Heaviest I've ever been at 5'11" and 220 pounds. 😩 Sometimes I see a glance of my reflection off of my screen and notice that I've got moobs now lol...
obese people are hard to move, a team of people are required & it's extremely difficult to do surgery or resuscitate with all the extra _layers_ Imagine a firefighter trying to rescue someone they can't lift... they won't
How many thin druggies does he see die? Let’s shame some addicts next. It’s so cheap and easy to shame people for being fat because you can SEE it. All of the other people he sees as an EMT are probably not obese, and yet they get a pass because it isn’t visibly evident what contributed to their health issue. And that is the injustice of it, really.
Menta K that’s not what i mean at all, my point is that many people who are obese end up suffering horribly because of it. Also it’s a total myth that only skinny people deal with addiction, people of any weight can die due to addictions. While some drugs suppress appetite, others don’t, there’s no way to tell if someone is living with an addiction by looking at them.

I believe fat-shaming is wrong and never justified. I also believe obesity is unhealthy and almost always leads to health problems of one kind or another. And those two beliefs don't conflict in the slightest.
Absolutely. No one deserve to feel ashamed of themselves. Everyone deserves to love themselves. But loving yourself also means doing what’s best for yourself.
Exactly, we should be promoting “health at every size” as in whatever size you are you should try and keep your body healthy, but it is not possible to be healthy at every size. Being unhealthy isn’t bad, it isn’t a moral failing, but it is something most people would want to deal with if it’s possible for them just because we want to live long lives
Exactly! Bullying someone for their weight/appearance is terrible, not funny, not justified, and just generally a douchebag move. Being overweight/obese can and will have negative health effects, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. To say that being overweight doesn't have any health risks is denying science and medical research
I also don't believe calling someone fat when they've heard it their whole life most likely isn't a way to "help" them. You're not saying anything different and nobody asked. The people with the unsolicited advice pretend they "want to help fat people live longer" but when that person tells them to fuck off, the other person says "please die of a stroke you fat pig" come on now. yall need to stop pretending you care. we see you.
I’m overweight and I think one thing about Tess Holiday should be made clear: she is not a “size 22”. She is much bigger than that. If there is nothing wrong with her size, why lie? I don’t get it. Well, yes I do.
It's akin to those weight-loss ads where someone declares they went from 250 lbs. to 175 lbs.--or a size 22 to a size 6. That is absolute bunk. I went from 245 lbs. to 170 lbs.--or a size 22 to a size 14. I'd *love* to know how they are able to fit into a size 6.
I was around size 20 at 247 pounds. I'm only an inch shorter than Tess is. No way she's a 22. I had the same thought that if she's so proud, why is she lying?

@@MC-fe3qc maybe what gets hamsters is the social pressure to get fat. Expectations are high, stress is high so they get diabetic. If you try really hard, you can twist even science 😂 and HAES does it...
most people don't care when they see an obese person. The only person that cares is the obese person who can't get anybody (for obvious reasons)and then blames society which is stupid, because we are wired to find healthy humans attractive. Obese women are not healthy
@Jack Hoff Well yes but there's a difference between, "Hey, what you're doing is killing you, you should lose weight." and "Hey, you're ugly, lose weight."
@@ightimmaheadout290 that’s ur own opinion... many of these fat women are actually in relationships and are seen as attractive by their partners lol, the goal should be to push them to be healthy and not sexy
Telling a food addict/binge eater that they need to keep eating so they don't "give in to society's beauty standards and diet culture" is like telling an alcoholic they need to keep drinking all the time because they would be more fun.
I also think alcoholism is overlooked in obesity. Alcohol also contributes to obesity and the amount of people who are binge eaters AND drinkers is higher than people want to personally admit. Overeating shows on your body, so most people will admit it. But you can hide being an alcoholic.
@@bellamorts yeah or food and a bunch of mixers, wine that are super high cal.. or big chunks of a bottle of spirits if you're a heavier drinker. Sometimes I used to put my alcohol intake in myfitnesspal and it'd be like 500 calories and that's for pure spirits or mixed with a bit of diet soda.
@@ByeByeBelly plus 2000 cal or 5000cal to maintain a body like Tess has. The most infuriating thing is when people make fun of overweight people doing exercise or basically any kind of activity in public. You're making fun of them working to improve their health? That kind of thing is what makes people give up trying and rather not go out at all and just hide inside all day because they don't want people to look at them. Edit: Oh my god people are still commenting on this? Let's make one thing clear. Just because something never happened to you personally doesn't mean it happened to anyone ever. And "growing up and not caring what others think" isn't that easy for everyone, especially if you have social anxiety. I'm NOT EVEN using it as an excuse. I'm still dieting, and the only reason I'm not going to the gym right now is that they are closed because of the pandemic. I must admit the worst of judging and bullying happened in middleschool and highschool where I was forced to be sports in front of everyone else. I always hated it because I felt like the sole purpose of gym class is to humiliate me. This is likely where most people's fears of being judged come from so schools should really work on this. It's sad that school makes so many people hate sports for the rest of their lives...
@@LucyHeartfiliaasdfghj Don't know which country you're living in, but in my country fitness guys are really supportive for people that want to change for the better. The only problem is that most obese or overweight people that I've seen at the gym usually don't come back.

Gym teachers are often also pretty bad at actually motivating and supporting kids that can't keep up. They just make fun of them or say "you should be able to do this" without any helpful advice like easier versions of the exercises.
@@LucyHeartfiliaasdfghj That's honestly pretty sad, when we have gym class and we have to do let's say a certain amount of pushups, everyone is really encouraging to those that have problems doing them. But in my country the mentality is just different, people here are all about gym, training and stuff like that.
It’s very interesting to watch this because for so long I used say “im fat and healthy” when I wasn’t. I have lost 45lbs and I feel fantastic. I can go on walks and not be out of breath and I’m able to keep a healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. However, it is so empowering to feel like I’ve positively changed my life and it helps with my anxiety. Like I’ve got to be healthier than before, but not just in physical but also mental :)
if they wanted to have a body positive model they should’ve just started using models that are of average weight or slightly overweight. why do they seem to think you have to either be extremely skinny or extremely fat to be beautiful?
Yeah, it's either size negative zero or gimmie as much fabric that you can. It ignores everything normal in between. it ignores all the people with pooch or gut that are still decently in shape. Yet everybody else is kinda treated as "unacceptable" or just fetishized as "dad bods" or "thicccccc"
Actually most plus size models ARE average weight/size and about a size 12-14 which is the average in the US. Its only recently that they're using bigger plus size models (like size 18/20). In straight size stores they do only really use size 0-2 models though and that's unfortunate because most women shopping there are probably around an 8/10, which is a perfectly healthy size to be at.
I’ve noticed that this is prominant in american media. If you watch fashion shows from europe the models are more - for lack of a better word - normal looking. A decade or so ago, italy actually made it illegal to be a model if your BMI fell below a certain number because there was some kind of epidemic of girls not eating that made them very very sickly.
They also only use one body type. Curvy. They don't really promote other type like pear shape or triangle and others. I'm not curvy and it sucks seeing all super curvy girls and not someone who looks like me :/..
Because it`s not right, one is in the end a choice, just like being alcoholism or gambling addiction are choices, not necessarily easily to change, but you can change it, even if genetics might make it harder than for others, it is always a choice, race however is in no way ever a choice. Comparing the two is not only false, but that sort of ignorance and delusional thinking is pretty racist i`d say.
Must say I`ve even heard black women make the comparrison, which really confuses me, like how don`t they realise that one thing is within their control and the other isn`t?
I wondered if I was the only one who paused here. How do we live in the same reality? You literally have so much control over your issue it just comes down to living healthier. Our negative experiences as POC literally persist throughout our lifetime with literally no options for change outside of structural adjustment to societal institutions. That’s like comparing apples to oranges
When I shot dope it was my fault. Noone bought it for me. Gave it for free. My dealer was white. So people just need to.own their stuff fix it or just be quiet
The "Toxic Culture" part of this video reminded me of when Adele lost weight and a lot of her fans felt betrayed be her for giving in to beauty standards. They completely turned against her just because she wanted to be healthier.
As an overweight person working to lose weight, that pissed me off. Adele looked much happier and healthier. Her “fans” made me upset by complaining about her like that for doing the right thing
Your body doesn't give a shit about how you perceive yourself, it lives and dies by how you treat it. While we certainly should not attack people for being fat, normalizing a trend that is objectively unhealthy and which kills people earlier on in life is not something we should be doing either.
Also some people say “we all die at the end of the day” but they forget quality of life matters. When you talk to people who are obese (hell even people who are just overweight) they will tell you about how difficult things are for them. Well the ones who aren’t in denial that is. Also most people who do some small form of exercise daily will tell you how drastic it has improved their health and happiness. Even if they don’t become super buff or whatever just being active and eating right will change your life drastically for the better.
Here is what Tess is in for. I am an obese man and I have been all of my adult life. I had my first heart attack at 35. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes. I was shortly after diagnosed with sleep apnea. I almost died in my sleep. Over the years my knees have disintegrated to bone on bone because of my weight. I still refused to try to lose weight even though my diet and my weight DIRECTLY CAUSED MY HEALTH ISSUES. There is no debate about it, that is what caused my issues. I began to take medication for my blood pressure, diabetes, blood thinners, insulin, depression, diabetic neuropathy, Lasix, and acid reducers for GERD. I did this to myself and it infuriates me when people like Tess Holliday talk about being healthy at 300 lbs. It is an impossibility for her to maintain this for any extended period of time. It also infuriates me that young women are being led by the nose by this misinformed person. Don't go where I went! Body positivity is NOT the same as body health awareness and striving to be healthy.
I have GERD and sleep apnea, too. And at a risk of diabetes type 2. And I am now at 24.5 BMI. I used to be obese for my early life till 20. So yeah, obesity is an issue, obese people are not.
The saddest part is that even if Tess wanted to lose the weight, she would have to sacrifice her own fame, in favor of a healthy body. She has made obesity her brand; so if she wants to lose the weight at some point, she has to sacrifice her own fame. So sad to imagine someone possibly having to make a choice over fame, or a healthy lifestyle.
@@videogameguy101 which I agree would be fantastic! But we know that she would become an enemy of the HAES/FA movement. The pattern I have noticed with people in this group (I don't know if Kiana touches on this in the video at all), is the only thing that they hate more than skinny people is former fat people who prove the fact that weight loss can be healthy and sustainable and that healthy lifestyle changes don't always equal eatting disorders. Going against everything that this group stands for.
@@TayRayReads yes! I totally agree with you. You couldn’t have explained that better 🙏🏼that’s exactly what I was trying to say; that even if she decided to get healthy and change her “brand” she would still be hated. These fat promoting groups are such a manipulative trap once you join them ☹️
We had very skinny models on covers that made everyone want to be skinny (sometimes even through extreme measures), now we have a supersize model that's trying to make everyone think morbid obesity is okay. It just feels like we're going to one extreme end of the spectrum to another extreme end of the spectrum.
EXACTLY!!!! I just want someone who isn't extremely super overweight but not super unrealistically and unhealthly skinny. Like someone who has a realistic body, who is like someone who has a bit of a bigger stomach but who isn't morbidly obese.
I think standards doesn't change and young girls still feel bad when they compare themseleves to skinny instagram models most than to plus size models. The whole "plus-size models'' question just serves for women in their same weight or appearence.
Exactly, why cant we be normal? i mean there are several body types like pear shaped, hour glass shape etc the point is if you are not having any health issues it is all ok but to be that skinny or that fat which will cause you to suffer from life threatening disease is not ok. The problem here is we should not normalize morbid obesity but how to address the issue in society so that the person suffering from it can change his/her lifestyle in a healthy and positive manner
Yeah it is and there are reasons why. Social media is ran by corporations who pay for those super computers that run the algorithm. That being said, from a marketing stand point of a company say Dunkin’ Donuts or the candy industry who are you going to make more money off of, a extremely skinny woman or man or a super plus size woman or man ? Ding ding ding super plus size women or men. Since the rate of obesity is sky rocketing anyway why not make a crap ton of money of it. Diet culture doesn’t make krispy crème donut money. That’s just my thoughts
as a fat person suffering from serious health risks because of my weight who is trying to lose weight, i find it so offensive when people say "you dont have to lose weight you are perfect the way you are" like ok karen i guess ill just die at the age of 40.
I normally hate all these 'Tess Holiday is promoting obesity" videos because they tend to get so angry about people supporting their size and just throwing out that there shouldn't be overweight mannequins or models because they're fat and unhealthy despite being fine with underweight models. BUt I love how you included actual harmful 'scientific' research that is hurting people and in general you're one of the only youtubers talking about the psychological aspect of an eating addiction. I absolutely love your videos and this one especially because of the length!!
Exactly. People forget that the underweight models are not good either. And its gotten to the point that people hate of course the obesity promotion so much they fall back into glorifying being underweight and eating nothing. This was a cycle i had to break out of TOO. I had to TEACH myself to eat NORMAL and not just "nothing" because of this. Everyone should do their best for good health. Its not about what body type is the best, its about actually being genuinely healthy....
I've always believed that there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between being a little "squishy" or "plushy" and being OBESE!! If you're got a little bit of a tummy, thick thighs or whatever, yeah you aren't perfect but you're probably still able to move about normally, can bend your arms, exercise, etc. And yeah, there are people out there who eat normally and exercise and still have a little bit of "fluff". But being so heavy you can't see your feet, or your joint crack everytime you walk or need a Rascal or Walker to get around? That is NOT GOOD. AT ALL.
Not all smoker have lung cancer but that doesn’t mean that cigarettes don’t cause cancer.
the sad part is you're drawing a false equivalence.
True. Some have cardiac and arterial disease.
truepeacenik yes of course you just don’t ever hear smokers saying that smoking is healthy just because they don’t have cancer yet.

I am disabled. When the body positivity movement started, I started seeing more and more photo shoots of people who were amputees or had dwarfism or were in wheelchairs and it was massively inspiring for me, even if my specific condition never came up. Seeing this section of the movement die out in favor of curvy, classically beautiful women has been a huge disappointment. It reads to me that my body is less valuable, less important, that I will always be confined to the role of the “after school special.” It’s a pain difficult to explain or express.
Even though you find it hard to explain, as another disabled person, I COMPLETELY understand what you mean and feel the same way. It really sucks :/
And for people with burn scars thats what I personally remember well.

Censoring the word "obese" is like censoring the word "eczema". It's... it's a health condition. It's a medical term.

Its definitely true that being over 300 pounds will catch up eventually but so will being under weight and some how being under weight is considered good and praised in some ways aspesually in the fashion industry. I think equality and acceptance needs to be met while also addressing health mental and physical in a more wholeistic way.

This!!!! I love this. Thank you for saying this because I think people believe that loving yourself means you don't want to change or get healthy.
"love yourself" phrase has been abused to condition people to not make the necessary changes to better their life. that's toxic positivity
loving yourself also includes loving your joints
@@ihcuhcalaK Not to mention your arteries, heart, and other organs affected by obesity!
But these women don't use logic because for them being obese is beautiful unless you get sick from your dangerous lifestyle

@@doceansdeepwoo2532 None of those things are healthy and no one is claiming them to be. But, neither is obesity.

And I joined...and nothing. I even got ridiculed by these grown women in these groups and mass online accounts. It's body positivity only if your obese. I also struggled with an eating disorder which made me fluctuate between skinny and obese and honestly...that movement is TORTURE.

Why? I'm a heart doctor, so this is something I've thought about on a regular basis. Although thankfully, I have not found many patients buy into the idea that obesity is irrelevant to health. I've been nervous to cover this (just cos I'm a chicken and didn't want to face an angry backlash) so I'm glad to see this sensitive and balanced take. Kudos, and good job.
Oh and Sadiya Khan is a woman!
Please please please do a video on this/ effects of obesity on the heart!

I am just curious did you as a heart doctor had as a patients anorexic girls who damaged their hearts beyond possibility of repair?
I have arthritis, and I appreciate that my sister (a doctor of sports medicine) said to me “every extra pound of weight that you carry is like 4 extra pounds on your knees.” I’m not morbidly obese, but I’m not exactly in shape lol. It motivated me to hear it that way. She wasn’t calling me “fat,” she was telling me that I could control some of my pain by making changes within my own control.
When I hit almost 250 lbs I realized there was a problem. I started dieting and exercising. I am around 195 lbs now.

Prior to her weight loss, the only thing I knew about Adell was that she made really crappy music, and was as big as a house. But now, I know she has improved to being only chunky, and is apparently an entertainer (for some)
Same with Rebel Wilson now that she chose to be healthy

Awesome job on your weight journey!!!
@molly I like what you said but the last sentence is just rude and not relevant
@@ingridespinoza106 I think it’s relevant, because the main point of me saying this was to explain why they’re not the same thing and how it affects people. I’m sorry if it didn’t seem like that.
Thank you for saying this. It really is frustrating. It's like it's used to soften the blow of being overweight. If they say "I'm curvy", they associate it with Marilyn Monroe, being desirable, sexy, etc.

YASSSSSS! Preach!
As long as you are happy and healthy, I’m happy for you! 💞💞
I love this!
The food waste diet!
Unless youre under 5’ 110lb is prob unhealthy.
Good stuff 👍🏽
it's inarguable that overweight people have a lot of health issues overlooked or attributed to their size. but it's also inarguable that having hundreds of pounds of fat on your body has profound health effects. im always so baffled by the all or nothing mentality people have. its possible for the medical community to need to do better without obesity being harmless.
I agree, my friend has lupus and she's pretty much consults with her doctor as well regarding her diet (which is for religion purpose)

This comment is so underrated
Thank you for saying that. Your words are very wise !
"I can't walk half a mile but I know I'm healthy"... that goes direct to the Darwin Awards of the Year. Just sit and watch her explode.
“I can’t walk half a mile but I know I’m healthy”
Yeah, you’d have to be a healthy weight and paralyzed or some similar condition in order for me to believe that
A lot of these activists admit to that and what's worse is they think it's a valid disability.
There's no 'wake up call', they just rely on whatever allows them to maintain their state like a pile of wet paper towels.
lmao like henry the 8th
I can walk a lot and i still know im not healthy
“Losing weight for medical reasons is not body positive” what in the world, how about I love myself enough to ensure that I live as long as possible?

"Well I wouldn't be obese if I was 7 ft tall so I'm not obese" girl what are you smoking and can I have some
LMAO
She is 1.65 mtrs
If you have the proper diagnostic equipment you can identify multiple detrimental problems with your car without any readily apparent problems like a check engine light but if you go under "pending codes" you can have a bunch of problems that just haven't had time to manifest in a clear and observable way
Yeah and i wouldn’t be black if I was white
@steven manwaring
A bit long agree.

It would be ironic if she was vegan. It's almost like promoting obesity while not being obese. Seriously, the insanity in her eyes is clear
Congrats! I hope you're better now
*This* really needs to be said, being beautiful and being confident has *Nothing* to do with being healthy
did you use eating to treat anxiety or depression?
Being told to leave a movement because you want to lose weight is not a movement, it’s a cult.
The fact that these women's _whole identity_ seems to be about their weight really speaks volumes 😬
Those people aren't doing much movement anyways
Preach
I' m a nurse and I see morbidly obese 70 year old people every day.

Except I’ve known many, many morbidly obese people into their 70s and 80s, even a few in their 90s...
exactly and i totally agree! i know I'm not completely healthy at 5'8 and 206 pounds but since I'm growing and I'm still very active and my doctor has confirmed that I have a wide frame with thick bones and a lot of muscle I'm not worried. However, if I did weigh 230+ I would be concerned for myself. I think everyone deserves love but like you said not everyone is healthy.
The real hero’s are the first responders who have to lift these people and smell and see with their eyes the living conditions.

Hah, good one. Of course it's not healthy, imagine if that happened one day.
There are groups like that on the internet
i mean, that's a pretty farfetched comparison. some people are genetically predisposed to being overweight no matter how healthy they are. smoking is a choice, expensive, and it harms more than just yourself. even if someone were to choose to be overweight, at least they aren't putting anyone else at risk.
@@hachikos except they are being morbidly obese puts you at far more risk health wise meaning time spent treating you is being wasted when it could be being used on people who despratly need medical help for issues outside of there controll.

As someone who isnt exactly skinny but isn't obese... the whole "You don't have to be skinny to be healthy" movement is not aimed at morbidly obese people... You clearly haven’t seen her without the makeup.

Menta K that’s not what i mean at all, my point is that many people who are obese end up suffering horribly because of it. Absolutely. No one deserve to feel ashamed of themselves. Everyone deserves to love themselves. But loving yourself also means doing what’s best for yourself.
What you just said, my friend, is the perfect example of being level-headed and logical!!

This all started when society saw a fat person and called them "ugly" instead of "unhealthy". Health and vanity are not the same.
most people don't care when they see an obese person. The only person that cares is the obese person who can't get anybody (for obvious reasons)and then blames society which is stupid, because we are wired to find healthy humans attractive. Obese women are not healthy
@@ightimmaheadout290 Well, yes, I never said they were.
@Jack Hoff Well yes but there's a difference between, "Hey, what you're doing is killing you, you should lose weight." and "Hey, you're ugly, lose weight."
@Jack Hoff I get what you're saying.
But you can hide being an alcoholic.
yes yes yes !!! to maintain an obese body one must be eating plus 2000 or even 5000 cal a day, that is truly a sign of problems with food
I'm considered obese (186 lbs) and I usually eat about 1700 calories
@@ByeByeBelly plus 2000 cal or 5000cal to maintain a body like Tess has. I was obese as well (now I'm not anymore) and I definitely was eating too much from the wrong source (too much frozen/sugary/fatty/fried/industriliazed crap) and all the time. what you need to gain weight = surplus of calories (and quicker from empty/shitty calories like fastfood) be that from food or alcohol
Work out in private, problem solved.
@@maxxmabemwe4859 But they shouldn't have to.
Plus working out outside with fresh air is good for you. And less boring and monotone.
@@LucyHeartfiliaasdfghj Don't know which country you're living in, but in my country fitness guys are really supportive for people that want to change for the better. The only problem is that most obese or overweight people that I've seen at the gym usually don't come back.
@@snakeocelot4153 Germany.
And yeah in my experience trainers are usually nice and supportive.
The problem are judgemental people like many in the comments here. Usually other customers or at school it's other students during gym class (they are usually the worst).
Or they should get rid of fatty sugary foods altogether? And promote exercises more... less cars on the street and more walking and bike riding.
I'm not curvy and it sucks seeing all super curvy girls and not someone who looks like me :/..
these people relating weight with race doesn't sit right with me
Because it`s not right, one is in the end a choice, just like being alcoholism or gambling addiction are choices, not necessarily easily to change, but you can change it, even if genetics might make it harder than for others, it is always a choice, race however is in no way ever a choice.
The way she compared being fat to being poc ... 💀
No one turned against her your referring to people who gossip about stars and they had a new way to shame her that's all they care about.
@@kathkat0055 who were these fans????
@Ruby Gill I think you should read her comment again. She wasn’t hating on Adele, she was calling out the “fans” who attacked Adele for losing weight.
or when lizzo started drinking health shakes
I think shame IS needed in society, we should bring that back so people can wake up from the delusion
Your body doesn't give a shit about how you perceive yourself, it lives and dies by how you treat it. While we certainly should not attack people for being fat, normalizing a trend that is objectively unhealthy and which kills people earlier on in life is not something we should be doing either.
Oh my god the first sentence if i would be millionaire i would send you 1 mil istg that sentence was so f good 💯💯💯💯💯
That first sentence is gold. The rest of your comment is good too, obviously.
Agree. Same goes being underweight too
Hit the nail on the head! Excellent summary.
Whoever you are, i really respect this comment, i really wish you good luck on losing weight
Thank you for sharing your story!
You said it!!
@@banapotato6940 ^^^^ what they said
I have GERD and sleep apnea, too.
I hope that for the sake of her kids, as well as herself, she comes to her senses.
Or she could start promoting herself as the “Former Fat Model Who Learned Being Healthy Is Much Better For You In The Long Run” 🤷🏾♂️
These fat promoting groups are such a manipulative trap once you join them ☹️
Exactly. I don’t even think she would even go see a doctor. Imagine if she goes in for knee pain. People would jump down her throat.
Can't believe I've never come across your channel. Unbelievable content quality. You're also gorgeous!
Totally agree that it’s an over correct, but being obese is okay, just not healthy
as a fat person suffering from serious health risks because of my weight who is trying to lose weight, i find it so offensive when people say "you dont have to lose weight you are perfect the way you are" like ok karen i guess ill just die at the age of 40.
Don't feel worthless because of your weight. Aim towards shedding those extra calories and strive towards a healthy lifestyle.
I hope you’ll be able to overcome it and get out of danger ! It’s a tough road but it really does worth it ! Rooting for you ☺️. Take care 😊.

AT ALL.
