  • Brad Pitt's latest movie is Bullet Train, based on the book by Kotaro Isaka. In this movie review and book review, I compare the two and the changes that were made in the adaptation process. I absolutely love the book, and very much enjoyed the movie-but in the end, does the book still win?

Satoshi (Prince) was the most disturbing character in the book .
And they didn't include the teacher and "killed" Kimura's mother ( she and her husband tandem...... such an awesome couple).

While I want to read the book only because of how much I adored Lemon and Tangerine in the movie, to me they were the best part of the movie especially Tangerine and I loved their banter it reminds me of the debates my friends and I get into. So mad they killed Tangerine, but hey, when he was bleeding out of his neck he seemed pretty pissed before he died. And my favorite part in the film is that scene that you didn’t like with Tangerine climbing on the outside of the train and he head butts through the glass to get back on, it’s just his pure stubbornness that I loved at that moment. I’m going to buy the book just so I can get more lemon and tangerine!

Haha you make a good point about it showing his stubbornness and determination! And Lemon and Tangerine are even better in the book (in my opinion) so I think you'll love it 😁

It probably would have been tough to make Satoshi so similar, since he was such an internal character, everything was kind of going on inside his head, but yeah, I agree, not nearly as interesting as the book Satoshi. I also preferred how Satoshi had no familial relationship to the crime lord, the idea of not knowing what the other passengers are thinking/doing was a fun element in the book, and making Satoshi related to a the crime boss kind of detracts from that.

I did wished that we get to see more of an in depth story on the Prince, Kimura, and the Elder in the movie. Their story in the book sounded so much more interesting with a message behind it. I mean it was kind of implied in the movie? I feel like the characters were cut short. I've never read the book, but your review and comparisons between the book and the movie is the best one I've seen. Thankyou for doing this.

They are quite different, although they have the same core. They try different things and each one does its own thing really good. I would say they are more or less on the same level, but the absolutely insane third act of the movie is what makes the book win.

I also love the book and liked the movie, while preferring the book. While the movie was entertaining, the book was as well, while having deep emotional resonance. My favorite part of the book were the interactions between Kimura, his family, and The Prince, including the deep dive into The Prince's horrifying mindset during those interactions.

Suspension of disbelief was even more difficult for the movie because I live in Japan and know the rail system. It was easier and more enjoyable to think of it more like I thought of John Wick... another reality (or video game) where it is just that way.
    - bullet trains are electric... it would have stopped the second they crashed into the other train
    - reporters get blown over in hurricanes and yet Tangerine and other baddies can stand on a bullet train going over 200kph
    - Passengers on the train with loads of luggage and then suddenly it's empty like not one person booked the entire trip... which is actually less than two hours and not the overnight trip they make it. Bullet Trains don't run overnight. So even if White Death bought all the tickets from a certain station there would Still be loads on a ten car train (or was it 12).
    - Two workers on the train... no one in "First Class". There aren't a lot of workers on a train but...
    - A BAR? On a Japanese bullet train? With no bartender.
    - trains need drivers to stop at each station. This one dies sometime on the trip. Maybe after Kyoto but still one would assume White Death planned to live so... who stopped the train at each station?
I enjoyed the movie well enough. I just had to suspend disbelief a lot more than usual to do it :)
I'm not sure if I'll read the book or not. Maybe if it goes on sale with Kindle.

@@WhytheBookWins I'll think about dropping ¥1,000 on the Kindle book. It's a Monday AND a national holiday today in Japan so the coffee shops where I'd usually spend that money are closed. The money for the "cake set" (coffee and dessert) I'd usually get in independent coffee shops might go to that :)
Or maybe I should wait and see if you think I should read "Three Assassins" first.
I'm reading an older book now. The original longer version of "Stranger in a Strange Land". I'm only 1/3 into it but I like it so far. I wonder whether the author wrote it like that or actually thinks it about women but I'm only 1/3 through. I'll look things up when I'm done.

It was much better than the film. I really don't want to discredit the movie, because it was a really fun watch, but predictably, the book goes into greater insight. The one thing I really loved about the film though, was Aaron Taylor Johnson, he really gave the role 110%.

Even though there is no real talk of lemon being immortal in the movie, when tangerine tells him that there is blood on his shirt, he says something along the lines of:
"Who did i kill? It can't be my blood, cuz i never bleed."
And then in the scene where tangerine confronts the prince he says:
"You made lemon bleed. And lemon never bleeds."
So in the movie, they kind of referenced lemons immortality thing from the book by saying that he never bleeds, which i kind of liked. But thats just my opinion.
    Edit:
36:56 Kimura Sr. and Jr. both survive the train crash.

So I know I’m kind of late to the game but i just read the book and I feel like the entire premise in the book with prince was his psychological undertones in everything he does and how everything was meticulously planned where as in the movie the prince is just some little girl that somehow got everything to go her way. I also believe that they did nanao dirty in the movie because the whole idea with his character is that he is highly trained and extremely dangerous when he’s cornered but in the movie he is just some incompetent dude saying self help lines throughout the whole movie and I hated that they didn’t add his signature neck break skill in the movie. Lastly I hated the fantasy elements in the movie, it almost pissed me off because it was supposed to be about something that really happens in criminal Tokyo but the goofy scenes where they hang on to the door of a train going 180 miles per hour were so unrealistic. And the ending was awful

Book ruined it for me purely for its transphobia and subtle bits of fatphobia. Even though they were surprisingly small, it left a bad taste in my mouth, especially since it was completely unnecessary. The plot and characters are - for the most part - better in the book, I would never read it again because of that while I would absolutely watch the film again a dozen times over
