Just so everyone knows, when bears climb trees or stand up on trees near people it’s a sign of showing strength and dominance… it’s not a friendly behavior. Have your spray ready.
I would've been tempted to as well but I assume that's not the smartest choice. If you use it to early you could provoke the bear and cause it to attack you. Also, he probably didn't want to use it too early because he didn't want to waste it
yeah. I believe if you just happen upon a bear without it knowing you were in it's space, you want to talk in a calm voice because in that situation, yelling/acting big and aggressive will cause it to become defensive and potentially aggressive.
I'm not sure if shouting loudly works with black bears. I think it will cause it to charge a full attack. The guy did exactly what he should've done: not startle the bear. Pepper Spray or a firearm are your only protection.
People think black bears are harmless but this looks like classic predatory black bear behavior. They don't charge in but follow persistently and slowly escalate the aggression-getting closer, climbing trees, etc. This guy was lucky to have bear spray and I hope this video helps others understand dangerous behavior.
It's not what "people think", it's what literally every bear specialist and professionals from national parks dealing with bears say. Black bears are mostly skittish and they normally don't hunt humans. This is a curious young bear who could mean trouble but it doesn't justify the fear mongering that happens around bears. Regular people actually often believe they're man eaters and will attack at every meeting. People actually think bears love the smell of blood and other nonsense.
"Спрей от медведей"? 😂😂😂 Ребята, вы серьёзно? 😂😂😂 Этот что комар? Разгляди он (медведь) в нём угрозу или будь сильнее голоден, ни какой спрей не остановит. Ружьё не всегда останавливает... " Спрей от медведей"😂😂😂 Спасибо за настроение, мужик. Пойду своим медведям покажу, пусть по ржут от души. 😂👍
Exactly what I was thinking, lol. The bear was like, I don't see you doing these nimble moves like me, human. I'm bigger, stronger, faster, hungrier, and can climb like a squirrel monkey 🐒 so you better have some potent bear spray.
I had an encounter like this once. I became extremely loud and yelled and took a super aggressive stance and it turned away. My response probably would not have worked on a mature bear, a mother with cubs, or a male in season. But you can see this was a young bear trying to build up his courage to attack, getting more aggressive each time, so the soft and timid response actually invited the attack. But thank God the bear spray was effective.
In this situation you do exactly as you said, be aggressive, hold your ground, yell, etc. Black bears rarely attack, even with the situations you mention regarding cubs or mating. That does not mean get close to a black bear with cubs, but just that even then, black bears are typically timid and will almost always retreat. This particular situation is of the most dangerous you can have with a black bear and when most of the attacks and deaths occur. This was a "teenage" boar, who just like our teenagers tend to get themselves in trouble or push the envelope. That, or a food conditioned, and/or habituated, or finally a bear in predatory mode means you need to stop him from following you. Walking backwards is dangerous if he trips, the bear is likely going to attack and who knows if he hangs onto the bear spray. Either way, when a black bear is following you, they are trying to determine what action to take, or looking for the right moment to attack. So, you need to stop, start yelling, even throwing things at the bear to change their mind.
exactly if it was mature and larger the agressive stance probably wouldnt have worked adolecsent bear was very timid, i imagine yelling wouldve scared it off
Thats insane how quickly he got up, one moment he is walking and as the guy puts the tree between him and the bear, the bear will pop its head like 9 feet in the air the next second.
These wild animals are very smart. I was watching this coyote casually playing with this baby deer to try to get it to move further away from the mother deer so it can kill it . GANGSTER
I had my own encounter today. This big guy was no youngster. He just sat there and listened to me yelling at him for a few minutes. Obviously trying to decide what to do. I didn't back off and neither did he. Didn't want to encourage him to start moving. Lucky for me a couple other hikers came down the trail and the increased numbers made his calculation easier. He decided to turn and walk off. Props to you for this, people can comment and criticize but most have never been in that situation.
The great thing is that thanks to this encounter this young bear learned a valuable lesson and probably will never mess with a human again. Now he can lead a safer life in the woods by avoiding interaction with humans, and humans are also safe from him.
This is a huge reason why bear spray is so important! Not only does it keep us humans safe, it saves the lives of bears. Once they have had the unpleasant experience of pepper spray, they will be more likely to avoid humans from then on, keeping other people safe while also preventing an encounter that would ultimately result in said bears being destroyed. Bears are killed all the time due to them having no fear of people. Once a bear has lost it’s fear of humans & starts hanging out where the people are, they’ll be killed. They *might* be given another chance with relocation but that’s not always the outcome. Bear spray saves bears too!
Edit: holy cow guys! I didn’t expect this much engagement with my comment.. glad some people could understand what I was saying haha. Thanks a lot everyone!!! All ufo footage out there are taken with a potato camera and horrible stability. We need people like this to record ufos
@@native82took me not even 2 minutes to find out you were the one lying. "The number of black bear attacks on humans is higher than those of brown bears, though this is largely because black bears outnumber brown bears rather than being more aggressive. Compared to brown bear attacks, violent encounters with black bears rarely lead to serious injury and death." 😂 you're a clown
Lots of experts giving their opinions. You kept your cool, did what you thought was best in the situation, and you taught a young bear humans are not easy prey. Well done.
Looked like a young bear feeling his oats. I've run into plenty of bears here in Idaho and that one wasn't sure what he wanted to do. I think I would have held my ground with that guy or even walked right towards him and hit him with the spray sooner rather than later. He seemed to be encouraged to follow the more you backed up. Either way he learned his lesson not to approach humans and everyone walked away unhurt. Nice job.
I was kinda thinking the same...the best thing for the bear is to scare it off immediately when it encroaches too close..they need to think all humans will hit them with the spray immediately.
Here's a tip I picked up first hand with an absolutely huge male black bear. Most older bears here in the western US anyway have been run by hounds at some point in their life. This huge boar was staring me down when I spotted him and wouldn't back off even after firing a few rounds from a rifle. He even started walking towards me and I didn't want to kill this guy so I started barking like a dog. When he heard what he thought were the hounds coming he spun around on a dime and took off running. I've tried that on a few bears afterwards and it worked every time. They think you just released the dogs and either take off running or get right up a tree. Don't know if it would work on a bear that's never been chased but it's worth a try.
You handled all of that really well. I use to work for Yellowstone National Park and everyone has their own way to handle this type of situation. Each bear is completely different, it has its own personality just as we do, but this little guy was definitely being a bit to curious and testing you out way to much, and I would have given him/her a small shot of bear spray to test him out before he got to aggressive just like you did, and it worked beautifully. As you did in this situation, I tend to also be more on the quiet side to keep the bear more calm only in a situation with a bear like this, talking quietly, walking slowly, and eventually using a small amount of Bear Spray. Good job, Happy Trails🐾🐻🌲
@@cmc5394oparva Yes an Airhorn can be effectively used in most cases, unless they have been around people using the Airhorn frequently, then there can be a chance where the bear can become de-sensitized to the sound. I would definitely always have 2 cans of bear spray as first protection. One important thing to know and people forget about is to make sure you absolutely read and understand how to make the "SPRAYER" on the can work. People have had unfortunate situations because of not knowing. Second, an Airhorn can work to scare bear away if it has not become to use to the sound, but I think it is a good thing to use as a second choice. Happy Camping 🐻
100% right. Stand tall too. Wave you arms. Sound scary. This bear was mostly curious and the quiet talking just encouraged him to investigate more. You want the bear to be scared of you AND humans he meets in future too! Otherwise, if he gets habituated to humans it’s a death sentence to the bear in the long term.
I would add that you probably don't want to yell in a high-pitched, panicky voice that might sound like a rabbit or fawn deer in distress. It doesn't need to be guttural, but I recommend a lower-pitched, assertive, "command voice." I bring the volume up in stages myself. The most anxious encounter I've had with a bear was with a youngster* like the one seen in the video. I was hiking out at the end of an eight-day shift in the backcountry of Glacier National Park in 1999. (I was working a Summer job doing historical preservation work on an 8-days-on, 6-days-off schedule). I was running a bit late. The sun was below the ridge, but still plenty of light remaining when I spotted the bear ambling up the trail toward me. I got bear spray ready in one hand and the biggest rock that I figured I could wield with authority in the other--I forgot all about my camera! I started at moderate volume to get the bear's attention as it didn't seem aware of me at first. The bear barely looked at me and gave no indication that it was going to yield the trail. The steep slope of the terrain at the spot did not permit me to step off either side without putting myself at greater risk. While the bear kept approaching, it took another three "Hey, get out of here!" each louder than the previous, before it finally diverted off the trail and passed across the brushy slope maybe 30 feet below me. I swear that critter gave me a surly glare as it did so. * A young bear is often likened to a teenage punk: it's out to test limits and see what it can get away with. Unfortunately for people, it doesn't require a very big bear to F' us up really bad.
Been involved in encounters with aggressive bears, made Me react highly aggressive in return, if you act weak around a bear, it will look at someone as an easy meal, never attack a bear, and never let a bear think your weak and small.
So many people would've tripped walking backwards in this wood. This guy has massive courageous balls to film the experience, walk backwards, and not hurt the bears feelings.
Yeah I couldn't film it well maybe when I'm stationary & have the memory but then that is it as I would want to have pepper spray in both hands or one hand & a spear in the other
That was the most calm and inviting “hey bear” I’ve ever heard. I’d have been rage yelling at it, and using my bear spray way sooner. Good on this guy for using the bear spray correctly though! :-)
@@Newjerseyblows Well considering theres entire countries that live in Bear country, like Canada, its not hard to find people who knows what to do when you encounter a bear. Expert,s advices and lessons are posted just about in every single parks. Here in the Rockies, everywhere you go theres a "be bear smart" sign.
I was thinking this the whole time! My fou mouth would have been screaming things like, "God da** son of a bi*****,co********* mother Fourier bear asshat bear", at the top of my lungs. But yeah I don't know how affective cursing bears out is.
@@hadleytorres8171 lol, same. I imagine the most important thing is the volume, power, and intention behind the words you’re hollerin’, but I would have some choice words just the same.
Raise your arms, make yourself appear as large as possible, and make the loudest, scariest roar you can muster! You are blessed to be alive! A wild animal is not a wayward doggie! You almost sweet talked him into mauling you.
This is the opposite of how you should behave. I've been this close to multiple bears before to take photos and all I do is calmly walk towards the bear until it walks/runs away. I've never seen a bear tree itself or look at me like prey because I didn't make baby talk to it and back away like prey.
I recently seen a video of a guy on “I Survived” that was attacked by a smaller bear and it tore one of his eyes out and scalped him so yeah any bear encounter isn’t to be taking lightly, this could have been a big mistake for him talking so friendly to this guy, should have put a little more bass in his voice and made himself more menacing because that little bear could have messed his whole world up if he felt so inclined.
Ya, definitely. It looks playful but it isn’t. These creatures don’t care how loud you are anyway, or what fanatics you use. Be armed, don’t run, don’t play dead, don’t climb or travel alone in such places.
Hard to say. Here in British Columbia, Canada the guidelines for a bear encounter are to " talk in a low, calm voice"; but he could have made himself look a bit bigger too (but that also might had not effect until he used the spray since, according to the same source, " a predatory bear will approach silently and persistently, usually in rural or remote areas and may continue to approach regardless of your attempts to deter them by yelling or throwing rocks".
It kept running forward and climbing because the bear was nervous. He was following but nervous. A bit of clapping and stomping and yelling probably would have send him sprinting. But since the bear didn't see that he kept getting closer. But he wasn't sure if he was safe near the man. Hence he knew he could climb if the man attacked. I think this turned out fine. But he should have sprayed it sooner. And more spray. And more yelling. Once you pull the trigger, you gotta yell, and commit . You set a precedent that the bear should "never talk to another human". Or get close.
Am I crazy for watching this and thinking to myself “I could like outwrestle that bear and pin it down so it couldn’t move, it looks tiny and not that strong
@@JoaquinLucero22420 Probably you could? Black bears are known to be timid and not that great wrestlers as the brown bear. If this were a grizzly, well, you'd be lucky if it killed you before eating you.
Good thing he didn't back up on 🐻 brother or Moma Bear. Keep head on a swivel. But text book reaction not turning & running. They run so fast. He would not be able to put run it. Great job. But still hope he had a back up plan. This should be used in CPL & Rookie Police Training videos on how not to aggressively shoot some one who is not up on you as threat to life.. Make sure stop threat but don't hafta shoot to kill unless threat keep comin.
Good bear my ass! He was unsure, and testing you! If you didn't have that bear spray, you probably would have ended up being dinner! You need to show him right from the start that you are not a good option! You were letting him build confidence! I'm glad you had the bear spray!
Well done. You showed considerable restraint and when in very close range gave him a very short shot when it counted. Doubt he'll get that close to an upright human again. Nicely done.
I agree. There are no bears in my country but even though this was only a small black bear and not a grizzly or a polar bear I'd have probably unloaded the whole can on it. I know it's probably just inquisitive but there's no way I'd be taking that chance. This guy must have balls of steel because if I was walking through somewhere with bears I'd be taking at least one gun and probably someone else who knew what they were doing with me to fire it if needs be. I'd never want to kill a bear or a wolf or mountain lion but if I felt threatened by one I'd fire a warning shot or two and if it kept approaching I'd shoot it to death as quickly and cleanly as possible but I'd be very shook up and upset afterwards I can guarantee that. This guy made that look like a walk in the park in my opinion.
@@chucknutly3290 and this is how you end up with a fat fine and jail time. It is illegal to fire a firearm in national parks. Dumb advice to carry a gun. But since ur not knowledgeable, guns are ineffective against grizzlies. They will still maul you even after you hit it with multiple shots
@@chucknutly3290 no it’s completly and utterly pure stupidity to think a gun is effective vs a grizzly. Clearly you never seen one up close or how they move

He's a lot more patient than I would have been. I think he was just looking for the Charmin though. I had a bear encounter a few years back, I pulled over in the mountains to hang a whiz, got out of my truck and started walking to the trees, looked up and there was a big ol bear fifteen feet away staring at me, it didn't' register at first, I thought what a weird looking dog! We just sat there staring at each other, I couldn't even think so I started backing up and when I knew I could reach my truck I took off running, I turned around when I got the door open and he was running the other way. My heartbeat probably scared him. Holy crap!
@@d.l.3530 By running it sounds like he turned his back on the bear. It's a good thing the bear took off the other way, as it might have been able to move faster than he thought. He could have accomplished the same thing by continuing to walk backwards to his truck, without the risk of triggering the chase instinct in the bear.
I have met bears in nature a few times and it’s very hard to keep your cool. When they move the ground vibrates under your feet. This guy handled himself quite well imo.
@@Kevinschart exactly. The range on that stuff is not that great especially if there's a breeze and it disperses quickly. It goes against your natural instinct but it's better to wait until the bear is close enough that you can be sure of hitting it. This guy did a decent job. Short well aimed burst.
I was terrified just watching this, hard to imagine a real life encounter - the prospect of being eaten alive is inconceivable. Definitely getting myself some bear spray before I go camping again. Whatever his motive for filming (to share knowledge or last testament), I’m very appreciative to see how far away the spray is effective.
Get a big gun!!! I kinda think that a very hungry big bear would not be put off by that spray!!! It might just piss them off!!! Just be sure your not gonna be eaten alive!!!
I've been in that same situation before. I was cool, calm and collected the entire time. Didn't even feel real. Then, when the threat was over my adrenaline kicked in and I couldn't even stand up my legs were so shaky.
First of all: Great job, you filmed the encounter, were prepared with bear spray, and didn't die. The few encounters I've had with black bear, I'm yelling as soon as I see them, clapping my hands, I take a step towards them, raise my hands in the air. So, far every bear has just run away, maybe just because they didn't want to be bothered by some yelling gesticulating human. This bear was definitely in stalking mode; charged once when you went behind a tree and he had cover. Probably standing your ground sooner and getting louder would've sufficiently bothered him. But if you did that we wouldn't have this great video, so thanks!! 😊
That's what I thought as well, since it was a smaller bear, I'd raise my hands, maybe even swing them crazy, yell in a lower voice and charge in its direction. ...but only, because it was a younger, smaller bear. With a grown ass bear, I'd just die, lol.
Psychologist: "So tell me what happened?" Bear: "The man told me I was a good bear but when I went to get closer for a hug, he instead sprayed with a mace!" Psychologist: "How did that made you feel?" Bear: "Awful! , I don't trust humans anymore!"
A few years ago our family was visiting Gatlinburg at the Smoky Mountain National Forest. We encountered a bear and luckily a forest ranger was nearby. He told us to slowly back away raise your hands and start making noises. And then the bear charged us he shot and killed it. Bears are unpredictable no matter what you do when you encounter one. These comments here are futile.
These comments are mostly window licking screen watchers who never set foot in the real woods, and wouldnt last 10 min,I find it all entertaining all the I would of you should of
I read bears are related to dogs. So as big as they are you would not want it coming at you like a wild dog. Throwing it a chew toy probably not a good idea! 😆Click on Da Bird and see where he takes you!
I wonder if that charge was a legit charge to do harm, or if it was just a bluff charge. Black bears are notorious for bluff charging. Either way, glad u all came out unharmed. Sucks that the bear died
The wavy hands and noises probably induced a "bluff charge ". Bears usually act out of fear and screaming at them makes them more fearful. If they feel there's no escape they will charge to scare you off. Many Park Police and rangers don't even know this as some recive no bear training. Having not been there I can't say for sure.
We have them all over Missouri...And this fact is NOT true lol, A black bear will almost always avoid you unless she is with cubs, They are one of the easiest bears to hunt due to their non aggressive demeanor
JD Hall why shoot an innocent animal that’s done nothing to you and just wants to live and feed itself like you? Hunting is the biggest act of cowardice a human can undertake.
This bear was for sure messing with him when jumping on trees, it did not seem scared one bit, just seemed to be testing things and waiting for the right time to swoop in. Good thing he had that bear spray and it worked well. Personally, I worry about stuff like this because I do not think I could contain my fear well. This man dealt with it very well.
@Brian Peppers as your name is Peppers I believe you are an expert about Pepper sprays. Maybe the best is to spray yourself and hope the bear don't like mexican cuisine
It's very effective. I did rip a LOUD ass fart once when I was visiting Wyoming on a hiking trail and heard something growl in the distance, as if I angered it. I swear that's a true story as weird as it sounds.
Dude I’d be yelling at that bear like it just stole my wallet. We can’t be bear whisperers in a situation like that. Gotta give the guy props for being lenient with the spray though, didn’t spray him immediately and gave the best time to think it over.
@@Charlesssssss At least when cubs are around. If it's a lion in prey mode you better scream and make it intimidated. Two points of criticism I'd like to level here. 1. The guy in the video after a certain point should of stopped backing up and stood his ground. 2. He should have been MUCH LOUDER. Thankfully things worked out in the end regardless.
Yeah black bears in general find this kind of backing off behaviour as prey behaviour. You gotta show them that youre not prey. Worst thing you can do is play dead, black bear will happily start eating you. With brown bears everything is the opposite. And carry a spray, it works better than handguns
@@lghal1 It was probably also closer than what the video is showing. When I record something it always looks further away on video no matter what setting I put the video at.
This is why you always have bear spray and/or a gun whenever youre in bear territory. That way you can defender yourself and don't have to worry about being eaten.
Not just bears either, many predatory animals becomes increasingly curious the more a person acts like a nervous prey item. Monitor lizards such as the komodo dragon are another great example. They may not know what you are, but the more you act like food the more curious they are going to get about it.
You gotta use your bear spray like a skunk would use their stench, instead of spraying everywhere and giving the bear time to get used to it, use the element of surprise

You’ve probably learned this since your encounter but NEVER turn your back on a bear & running (although understandable) is the WORST possible thing to do. Even if a bear is not in predatory mode, running from it often triggers a chase - and we’ll never outrun a bear. You were extremely lucky & it was probably the highway that prevented it from reaching you. Was the bear seen since then? By anyone? Get yourself some spray and practice with it. (It’s important to do this so you’re comfortable in using it.) I hope you continue to go on your walks. In addition to bringing spray, take a friend or 2. Bears are less inclined to approach us if we’re with others. I wish you the best. Out of curiosity, where was this? (Not asking for exact location; just the general whereabouts in the country)
My nerve was so badly tickled while watching this, it must be very hard for him staying calm while multitasking, walking backward in a calm pace without being tripped, filming and catching the scene nicely, talking to the bear, getting ready at all time and finally operating the spray effectively.
Yes tripping and falling during this would only compound your vulnerability. Your spray could fall out of your hands during a surprise stumble. Also notice while he was moving the bear got closer every time there was trees or foliage between them. Better to stand your ground in terrain most favorable to yourself. If it attacks, spray it and get this over forthwith. Fear produces perspiration. Your open mouth immediately becomes very dry. On a long trip u don't need deyrdation worsening your day.
I've seen someone on another bear video who explained why the bear that was stalking/chasing him kept climbing the trees and them coming onwards. It's a show of aggression, according to the other video. They explained that climbing part way up a tree was the bear's attempt to appear larger and more menacing. I have no doubt that if this guy had turned his back for an instant, or ran, that bear would've torn him up.
not true--the bear was very curious--wanted to have fun but was also nervous to what this funny creature on two legs is--was showing zero aggression, just curious--bear was climbing just in case the human attacked him--it is a young bear, very typical of those kids!! i did surveying in Wyoming for oil field companies and aggresive bear is way way different-never turn your back on a bear,never--a more scared bear will bluff charge,me,bear spray in one hand,.45 in the other, never had to fire....

Better to spray the bear as early in the encounter as possible. This helps teach them to avoid people from the sight. This bear may still want to 'test' the next subject. Best bear spray to get should spray a minimum of 30ft, have at least a 7 second burst and a cone shaped spray. Spray is more effective than a gun. A bear can and will still charge you after being shot, but won't and can't if it can't see or breathe well.
Honestly the same could be said for bear spray, there’s been many instances where the bear ignored the spray and continued to maul the person. I’d prefer a gun because at least then I can keep firing until a fatal shot lands. With bear spray you just have to pray the bear immediately retreats.

It would've definitely attacked him had he not sprayed him with that bear spray. He was walking backwards, trying to keep his distance from bear but you see that didn't quite work out for him.Once, a bear catches a glimpse of you, there's no point in retreating, you've gotta fight your way out or you ain't going back home in one piece.Simple as that.
Lol no. That was a young bear that was curious. The climbing of the tree shown how young he was innthe mind and how curious he was. Your comment is hilarious
@@AnshulKumar-gi8ok I disagree, they will only attack if they think your weak, or you can't hurt them. The exceptions are cubs, territory, and sex (breeding.) Those 3 there's no rules. Licking his chomps and posturing on trees is a sign of an imminent attack....oh, and the charging and stalking. This bear wasn't hungry enough or confident enough to full charge this man, but no doubt was looking for a meal. Thankfully this guy had his bear spray out.

Wow, that was a close call. Looks like he was just curious but you never know what's on their mind, they change their mind fast. Bear spray worked perfectly. 👍
Bear Spray worked this time. What about next time? Will the spray can be defective, or will the spray can work like it is supposed to? Will there be tall grass, leaves on tree limbs, etc. to deflect the spray away from the bear's head? Will it be raining, or will the bear have a a strong wind blowing at its back and into the face of the person holding the can? Nothing against the poor bear, but unfortunately, using a shotgun would be a better option in a case like this, and could be used at a greater distance than bear spray.

@@pfanzers One time while vacationing at a cabin, they told us not to yell or scream at the bears. They said that possibly provokes them and makes them attack. They gave us a horn instead.
I t looked like the Bear was very young and curious more than in an aggressive mode. Kept using the trees as it closed in. Got a little braver every time . Good chance it would have changed from curious to attack mode if you didnt have that spray with you. Great video.
Yep, it did several test charges when a tree was at end of each test charge. It was definitely probing the guy for a reaction and the tree was it's out each time. It was probing to find a good opportunity to make a final charge for attack.
K Smith I know enough to keep a safe distance from bears. I base this on advice from wildlife biologists and my own experience hunting in bear country for over 20 years. Thankfully I have never felt threatened by a bear but there have been a couple close encounters. Still I'm sure I am just wasting my time explaining as some people are determined to be critical and that is ok.
Yup. Changed its mind pretty quick. I would have sprayed in the first few seconds personally. Never been face to face with a bear yet but I wouldn’t be waiting to see how it acts. If it comes towards me after a warning it gets sprayed. Great job keeping calm, that’s a scary situation even with spray.
I would have sprayed it pretty early too. When bears get sprayed they learn that humans can be like skunks and avoid them. Makes the next person who encounter it more likely to not get hurt.
...best thing that guy could have done for an overly-curious youngster...now the bear kid will know that people should be avoided and will avoid future tragedy...God bless both of them.
Yes! In spite of the many “experts” on TH-cam explaining he was just curious and wanted to play you are absolutely correct!! He was exhibiting multiple predatory stalking behaviours.
Next time you’re in this situation, walking backwards and saying “hey bear” 57 times in a relaxed voice is not the correct approach. Next time raise your arms in the air, wave em like you don’t care, yell in the most masculine voice you have and stand your ground. If it continues to approach, then light him up with the spray.
“So you know you did something exactly that kept you alive and deterred the bear? Next time don’t do that, do what I suggest instead during that life threatening event.” Use your brain bro.

No, it's not. This idiot should have sprayed right away instead of playing a bear whisperer letting the bear come closer and closer and risking getting mauled. That way he would have created a safe distance barrier, allowing himself to get away from the danger right away. This is just dumb behavior so he could make a viral video.
Trying to get behind you, multiple angles. It was waiting for an opportunity, about as predatory as it gets. You probably would have been lunch if not for the spray, Good job.
That was a very interesting encounter it was almost like the bear for sure was more than curious he almost wasn't sure if you were food or not you held your composure very well
Thank you for the video! A few times the bear seemed like he would go on his way but you called out "good bear" and it seemed like you got his attention again - just wondering (?) Glad the bear spray worked (will get some!)
The bear had no intention of leaving. Climbing trees is a show of strength. This was predatory behavior. If the guy would have tripped and fell, the bear would have attacked.
@@murfdog19 I agree. The bear was angling towards the man, getting closer and closer, as the man was backing up. Glad the man saw the right moment to spray because the bear was Right There within reach of pouncing! Whew!
@@murfdog19 this is a perfect example of why guns exist. I don’t care what any nature loving tree hugger says, I will always shoot to kill something that is threatening my life. They can hate me all they want, but I’ll still be breathing.
That bear was stalking him, trying to circle around him, opening closing mouth, and climbing up and jumping down trees-all signs of aggression and predatory behavior. The climbing a little bit up or clawing at trees while stalking like this is him showing strength and dominance. It’s not him trying to go away. The bear was purposely trying to make the man trip and hoping to run around him to attack from behind. Bear experts recommend with black bear you yell put your hands in the air and don’t back down because if he fell that bear could have been on him. He should have sprayed him as soon as he got close to him and yelled loudly. With a grizzly you speak low and calmly like this because grizzly are not scared of basically anything or with a black bear fat off or passing by.
Just so everyone knows, when bears climb trees or stand up on trees near people it’s a sign of showing strength and dominance… it’s not a friendly behavior. Have your spray ready.

yeah. I believe if you just happen upon a bear without it knowing you were in it's space, you want to talk in a calm voice because in that situation, yelling/acting big and aggressive will cause it to become defensive and potentially aggressive.
It calms the person. Not the bear

Acting out as soon attack
Haha
So, you need to stop, start yelling, even throwing things at the bear to change their mind.
exactly if it was mature and larger the agressive stance probably wouldnt have worked adolecsent bear was very timid, i imagine yelling wouldve scared it off
The fact that he kept backing away is why the bear kept following him. Should have held a more aggressive approach.
exactly what I thought. i know close to nothing about bears but that's the exact tone i use to call my puppies and my cats over to me 💀💀
So glad there is a bear in the comments to answer our questions. 👍

This is why it's so important to never feed bears. You can be putting other people in great danger.
Nice username
What if that bear could’ve been the ambassador to bring peace between our two species but now he has a hatred for mankind for this unprovoked attack

Wouldn’t a pack of lit firecrackers work just as good?
Cool idea n good thinking

As you did in this situation, I tend to also be more on the quiet side to keep the bear more calm only in a situation with a bear like this, talking quietly, walking slowly, and eventually using a small amount of Bear Spray. Good job, Happy Trails🐾🐻🌲
I've read that air horns can be effective in scaring them off as well, is that the case?

I've never seen a bear tree itself or look at me like prey because I didn't make baby talk to it and back away like prey.

I commend you sir for staying calm in this situation. Just shows that not panicking is one of the besr keys to survival.
What's interesting is bears have powerful horizontal leaping power, everytime it climbed a tree I wondered if it was considering the takedown.
Hard to say. Here in British Columbia, Canada the guidelines for a bear encounter are to " talk in a low, calm voice"; but he could have made himself look a bit bigger too (but that also might had not effect until he used the spray since, according to the same source, " a predatory bear will approach silently and persistently, usually in rural or remote areas and
may continue to approach regardless of your attempts to deter them by yelling or throwing rocks".
Agreed. I think him pacing backwards and speaking/ acting timidly may have enticed this sort of predatory behaviour in the bear.
Seems like a young bear who's curious. Bear spray is a life saver.

My greatest sympathies. When you are ready, " get back on the horse" so to speak. Don't leave it years.
Don’t _ever_ turn your back on a bear, or any other animal that can threaten your life
Learn to shoot.
(It’s important to do this so you’re comfortable in using it.)
I hope you continue to go on your walks. In addition to bringing spray, take a friend or 2. Bears are less inclined to approach us if we’re with others. I wish you the best.

My nerve was so badly tickled while watching this, it must be very hard for him staying calm while multitasking, walking backward in a calm pace without being tripped, filming and catching the scene nicely, talking to the bear, getting ready at all time and finally operating the spray effectively.
Tripping & falling could reveal a vulnerability the bear could read as wounded possibly.

When I was 17 (5 years ago), a black bear charged at me, and all I had to do to get it away from me was yell at the top of my lungs. Granted me yelling wasn’t because I thought it would save my life, it was a yell because I thought I was going to die, but it did work and the bear turned around and ran off

That’s awesome, Bears will act different though. It won’t always work, however that’s the best thing you can do.
@@pfanzers One time while vacationing at a cabin, they told us not to yell or scream at the bears. They said that possibly provokes them and makes them attack. They gave us a horn instead.
Makes sense. Black bears are scaredy cats and will be intimidated easily

I just love the way he says "good bear" after macing him right in the face.
😂
I t looked like the Bear was very young and curious more than in an aggressive mode. Kept using the trees as it closed in. Got a little braver every time . Good chance it would have changed from curious to attack mode if you didnt have that spray with you. Great video.
"I caught a salmon, can I borrow some of that pepper?"
Yep, it did several test charges when a tree was at end of each test charge. It was definitely probing the guy for a reaction and the tree was it's out each time. It was probing to find a good opportunity to make a final charge for attack.
@@sunfish4095 that’s exactly what it was doing.
Most ppl don't know that jumping in the tree was a sign of im stronger than u. And a challenge.
@Black Monday….I didn’t know that but I’ll definitely store that information away in my cranial filing cabinet. Thank you.
Very good! That bear used alot of energy in pursuit meaning you were food. You used bear spray and ended it. Good job!
Do you often pretend to know things?
@@michaelgreenlee9431 💯
...best thing that guy could have done for an overly-curious youngster...now the bear kid will know that people should be avoided and will avoid future tragedy...God bless both of them.
"Go tell the other bears what you saw"
If I am not mistaken this is a predatory bear attack cause the bear was circling the guy and stalking him
You are absolutely right. As well as climbing trees to show his strength and dominance.
This bear wanted a meal and this guy sounded like a light one.
A stubby 12 gauge slug gun would have been the right choice. Hopefully this bear doesn't kill someone. That was predatory.
Yes! In spite of the many “experts” on TH-cam explaining he was just curious and wanted to play you are absolutely correct!! He was exhibiting multiple predatory stalking behaviours.
@@rw7594 and he climbed trees every chance he could to show how tough he was
Next time you’re in this situation, walking backwards and saying “hey bear” 57 times in a relaxed voice is not the correct approach.
@@ekothesilent9456 it's litterally a proven plan of action...besides this bear was smaller and was only brave because of how weak the dude was acting.

I can appreciate that he only used what was needed to deter. This shows respect for the bear.
F*ck the bear🤡
That thing was preying on him. F*ck respect. I'd have emptied the bottle on the mf's face...
Same. I've read many comments of people proud to say they don't use spray but they carry rifles and it makes me sad
The timing of his spray is perfect. When the bear is close enough, but not too close. Just when he stepped over the security line.
Yea he didn’t over do it or spray it point blank , fair play to him.
Can you explain why this is effective? I feel like I would have close the distance and drowned the fucker personally.
His calm controlled spray was effective, but didn’t seem like a lot, I would have sprayed more.
Good thing bears are extinct in my country 😂
Agreed
No, it's not. This idiot should have sprayed right away instead of playing a bear whisperer letting the bear come closer and closer and risking getting mauled. That way he would have created a safe distance barrier, allowing himself to get away from the danger right away. This is just dumb behavior so he could make a viral video.
Proof is in the video dude. The guy is still alive, the bear took the hell off, end of story!
I'm just amazed he can walk backwards, record the encounter, and keep the spray pointed towards the bear, all at the same time.
yeah under the circumstances he kept that camera focused pretty well on that bear the whole time.
Walking backwards is a recipe for disaster. So easy to trip and fall. Then you're done.
@@katydidnt3906 so is turning your back to a bear
You'd be surprised how easy it is to multi task.
Being scared outta your mind can make ppl focus real good.
Trying to get behind you, multiple angles. It was waiting for an opportunity, about as predatory as it gets. You probably would have been lunch if not for the spray, Good job.
How can something be so terrifying yet adorable?
Like Xi Jinping
They should use bear spray on Xi.
Thought the same thing. Like he was calling for it. I think he was determined to use that spray.
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Wow Dude stayed calm till end ... Big respect!
It's a black bear, not a grizzly. He was very unlikely to be in any danger.
This is the type of guy that would say "it's okay, good bear" calmly while the bear is going full Revenant on him
It's a black bear, not a grizzly bear. They're mostly harmless vegetarians. It was just curious.
