  • Fragrance-Free hair products are hard to come by, so we’ve tested many on our curly hair and are sharing our best fragrance-free curly hair routine for 2c-3b coarse hair and 3b-3c fine hair plus reviewing the others we’ve tried. Special guest scientiffy Mell makes an appearance as well to tell us what stinks in the world of products i.e. why products contain fragrances, the concerns, and if you should stay away. Grab your popcorn for this one, it’s a routine, review, and ‘Melthbuster’ all in in one! If you love nerding out about hair and are looking for more ways to take care of your texture, make sure you subscribe to our channel, we put out new videos like this one every week! Thanks for watching 💜

    HI I wanted to say thanks for all the love on this video! We worked long and hard to share this information, would like to again credit some more fabulous educators on TH-cam, make sure to check out @CassandraBankson, @LabMuffin and @TheEcoWell, they have great videos sharing more on this, videos are linked in the description box as well as my references and the links to all the products we use!
    ALSO I missed the ingredient so I have to correct myself but FYI there IS glycerin in the Seen Curly Cream!! Apologies for not catching that sooner but I made note in the description box as well. Still an absolutely fabulous cream, and when you seal with an oil following Prep, Style, Finish and HHEO (hydrate, humectant, emmolient, occlusive) you will be good to go! Also, the JessiCurl Spiralicious Styling Gel Amanda is using is glycerine-free so another great option to apply on top of the cream 😘
    Leave any more questions below and I will try my best to answer it! 💖

    There's more to fragrance issues than contact dermatitis. I used to require emergency medical care for severe bronchitis and lung issues 2-3 times a year. Almost 4 years ago, I started eliminating fragrances and other lung irritants from my life. I quit shampoo cold turkey. I haven't had to see a medical professional for respiratory issues since. So, thanks for this video. I really do appreciate it. I just wish more people understood that there's more to allergies and sensitivities than getting a rash. Lung issues and scent induced migraines are more common than you might think. Fragrance isn't the only culprit, either, but it's a big one.

      that happened to my friend... she was having intense headaches and it was a face serum she had that had fragrance in it.

    • @pauseandthinkaboutit5487
      @pauseandthinkaboutit5487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, migraines suck. I used to get them from medication, so I feel your friend's pain. Luckily, I don't have that issue much anymore since I quit taking those medications. It took me way too long to figure out what was causing my chronic bronchitis, though. Now, my lungs are weak and scarred. Any little exposure to an irritant can make them burn. I make most of my own products now and use herbal medicine to treat my lung issues to prevent migraines. Not having the big medical bills has been really nice.

      I go into life threatening anaphylaxis with many fragrances. I have Mast Cell Disease and fragrance is a trigger. First I get dermagraphism then it progresses to trouble breathing, heart racing, drops in BP, diarrhea and fainting. If I don't stop it at that point with Benadryl, Allegra, Gastrocrom, Ketitofen, and pepcid then I will need to use my epi. Fragrance can be life threatening for many people, way more than people realize. I wish it was taken more seriously.

    As someone who gets a ridiculous amount of migraines every month and can only find 2-3 brands that don’t immediately trigger one from the smell, I appreciate this very much! I recently bought a bunch of products from a new brand that I was SUPER excited about and almost threw up when I brought the box inside. The smell was SO STRONG, it wafted out before I’d even opened up the box. I had to keep the box in my shower with the door closed until I could send the items back. No more of that brand for me. Thanks for all these suggestions where I won’t have to go through that experience again!

    Thanks for doing this! I really appreciate that you guys are so open to making content your viewers ask for. I do not have a fragrance allergy, but I have rosacea, so I avoid fragrance always on my face (so having hair products without helps) and I have a super sensitive sense of smell, so anything but shampoo with a scent will actually almost make me feel nauseous if I have to keep, for example, smelling my conditioner all day. (Also, shoutout to these companies making their regular products & adding in a fragrance free option, so we can all enjoy them!) Thanks again for the great video!

    Mell can you do some low-porosity product recommendations? I have low porosity hair, I've watched your old and new protein-moisture balance videos, and apparently my hair is dry and brittle!! But I'm using protein-free deep conditioners every week and it seems like nothing is working! I'd like to see a video on maintaining moisture with low porosity/protein sensitivity hair or something like that if possible. Thank you!!!

    • @ChlorineHeart
      @ChlorineHeart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      One thing I want to say as someone with low porosity hair is DO NOT rinse your hair with cold water. You will guarantee than no product can get into your hair! Clarifying my hair monthly has helped give my hair a fighting chance to absorb product as well

    • @coleen9987
      @coleen9987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Aside from washing with warm/hot water, as mentioned above, buying a heat cap is also great for your deep conditioning. It's a microwavable cap that you can put over a shower cap when you have deep conditioner in your hair. It helps open up the hair cuticle and help your products deeply penetrate the hair shaft.

    • @gabbynieves1629
      @gabbynieves1629 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I second this video! Also struggling with low porosity hair and dryness :( no matter what I do my hair ends up dry.. I stopped using protein for about 3 weeks now and at least my hair doesn’t look stringy when wet but still I’ll use products and when it dries it’s as if there is no products in it at all.

    • @BUBBLESLOVESYOU123
      @BUBBLESLOVESYOU123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly I literally just stopped using any protein in my hair because I need more moisture and it just seems like my hair isn’t getting moisturized.

    • @wilsonskipper1329
      @wilsonskipper1329 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To fully describe my routine: I use a heat cap to deep condition for 30 minutes once a week, I don't have protein in any of my products, I rinse with hot/warm water, I clarify with the ph9 undo goo monthly. I've been doing all this for about 2 months and it helped to a point but it's still dry and I'm not sure what else to do. After Mell's coconut oil video I'm wondering if maybe I should cut that out as well? I do have coconut oil in my styling products, but not my deep conditioner. I also don't diffuse but just air dry because I felt like the hot blow dryer was making it even more dry. Looks like I'm not alone in the struggles, though!

    This video helped me out alot! Recently I restarted my natural hair journey from scratch, and products I've used highly irritated my scalped causing uncomfortable burning. I'm not sure if it was the fragrance alone in it (which was super heavy), but whatever it was I immediately rinsed it and got rid of what I was using (which was creme of nature argon oil and carols daughter black vanilla if anyone wants to know). I do have eczema, so trying out fragrance free products would definitely benefit in more ways than one for me.

    Great video, im allergic to only certain fragrances, mostly flowery smells and 100% perfume type smells. I immediately get headaches or migraines or worse excema breakouts if I don't catch it right away! Sometimes its the combination of using different products and the smell build up... whew, too much.. the very light yet fruity or sweet smells, warm smells like vanilla are fine (curlsmith, and most Shea moisture products are all great for me)... Thanks for all you ladies do to keep us informed bc in a lot of cases fragrance free is a winner with me so i don't have to worry!

    Thanks so much! I have had what I call "hard hair" since I was little (I'm in my 40s). I remember a girl in elementary school telling me her mom said I had "witchy" hair. Thankfully I had enough self-esteem that I didn't care. But my mom had to sit me down before Jr High and tell me I had to do my hair. And so heat has been my best friend since then. It's the only thing that would take the frizz. I gave up because no matter how expensive the product, it didn't help my hair. I've been working a job for 4 years where I wash and wear my virgin never colored hair (no using heat and pull it back in a ponytail), and my hair would still be a frizzy mess when I went to style it! Now I'm starting to watch videos that are giving me hope. My hair gets dry VERY easily, and I want to use more moisturizing products, but my coworker is very sensitive to fragrances. So trying some of these products and being able to keep moisture in my hair and not cause my coworker to break out in a rash will be a blessing! My haven't ever colored my hair because I could only imagine the damage it would create to my already dry, frizzy, and easily damaged hair. Maybe if I figure my hair out (because I have to figure out my hair before I'd trust a hairstylist doing something new to my hair) then I would dare to get my hair colored. Who knows.

    Jessicurl is the best! I've been helping friends and family with curls to take care of them and having products that have fragrance-free options for men who don't want to smell like coconuts of flowers, people with allergies or just plain picky people is great, plus they have a great mix of products.

    This was a great video but I do disagree about the fragrances basically being no big deal. I promise if you detox from fragrances you will be shocked at how you feel to re-introduce them to your routine.
    Especially if you have deal with light headedness, fatigue, racing heart rate, headaches, etc. All my symptoms went away simply by switching my products and now if I’m around fragrances at all I get an instant head ache. It’s bad for you even if you don’t realize it.

      @Trinity M even though that situation doesn't apply to everyone, fragrances still affect everyone, and nobody wants to acknowledge it, even though there are many studies published about the harmfulness of fragrances. Fragrances put everyone at a higher risk of many different developmental disorders, cancers, and hormones imbalances. Even fragrances like perfumes and Air fresheners their side affects are comparable to second hand smoke. Even the EU has banned multiple toxic fragrances that the US has not.

      More and more people will notice sensitivity with fragrances as they are basically everywhere. It triggers the nervous system, but most people don’t know why they are tired or have head aches or a strange cough or feel light headed often. I get nerve pain and balance issues and severe headaches when breathing in anything.
      It’s also hard to avoid as everyone uses deodorants, cleaning agents, shampoos with fragrances. Shopping malls use air fresheners, the school of my daughter uses air fresheners their restrooms etc.

I'm getting back into wearing my natural curls and I need all the help I can get. I have 2b/2c waves/curls that's fine and low porosity, it's a few inches past my bum (getting it cut to probably hip length next week). You both have really inspired me to get back to my natural hair. I've been binging your channel since I was home from work hiding out from hurricane sally last week. Recently, I decided to let my wavy hair do it’s own thing (been straightening it for years) and had to change my routine. You are right! Fragrance free curly hair products are hard to find. I really appreciate your reviews and am going to try some of these products you’ve listed. Thanks!!!!
