She’s working 3 jobs, she’s obviously stretching herself too thin, has too much going on. I think she did the sneak peek to give to the couple for them to have right away, but also buy herself more time to work on the rest (I’ve done this). Then she put it aside, and went to work on another wedding, or another job and maybe mistook that wedding folder for another and thought she already finished it and deleted it, or maybe didn’t back them up and formatted her cards - but I definitely think she somehow accidentally deleted them and just kept thinking in her head they were somewhere else and didn’t realize until it was too late

I have always followed the rule, “It doesn’t exist until it’s in at least two places.” I shoot onto two cards. I keep everything on two external hard drives. I use crash plan to automatically back everything up again. And I wait to reformat at least one of the cards until the pictures are delivered. Then I keep the finished galleries on Shootproof forever. I pay for the unlimited plan. 😂🤪 I’m guessing this photographer only had the pictures in one place. Either on her computer or on a hard drive. Whatever the pictures were on crashed. Then she lied to put off telling them. I’ve seen this in photography groups on Facebook waaaay too often. I couldn’t sleep at night it I didn’t have all my backups. Lol

Dude. My sister hired a photog for her wedding who acted just like this. She literally ended up giving my sister (almost a year later) a usb drive with over 900 unedited, COMPLETELY unsorted photos. Some w the lens cap on, 100s straight up blurry. Wedding photography is NOT EASY why do ppl think it's effortless & cute. No bb. It's sweaty and hard WORK, long after the day is done! I've done 3 weddings & I take so many procautions to ensure this doesn't happen by accident. Losing photos is my WORST FEAR. I bet if she's a novice she prob deleted the pics off the SD card to use for her next shoot, then didn't realize until afterwards that she only uploaded the first looks to her hard drive. I do a full upload immediately of ALL of the raw images then leave the shots on the SD card until the clients have their photos. I won't use the SD card(s) again until the client has their photos. Buy tons of SD cards & don't overbook yourself & it's always a plus to have computer techs as friends. If they're "gone" it's bc she deleted them off her SD card too soon and didn't save the raw photos in bulk to a hard drive at all.

  • @jasonwrites9186

So ridiculous that she didn't offer a refund. She didn't provide the service she was meant to, and has caused emotional harm to the clients. Honestly, now a days people call them selves pro wedding photographers a day after going to Best Buy and buying a cheap camera, buying some preset packs on line and charging what they see other people charge. So it doesn’t surprise me that this person was charging 1,000 while simultaneously not having enough experience or being an actual professional. I see this happen all the time where I live at least… it also wouldn’t surprise me if this photographer didn’t have an external hard drive at the least lol. Most photographers I meet around here don’t have anything protecting their files like backing up and such. It’s becoming a trend to see the fun and beauty of this professional but not have the know how to educate your self about things you’ll need to know and prepare for when you take on said profession. It just doesn’t surprise me if Her computer crashed, and she didn’t have these photos saved anywhere else and that’s that. Or if she formatted her memory card and didn’t have these files backed up anywhere else. A lot of people don’t understand what all goes in to being a wedding photographer because “photography” has become so accessible. And it sucks because the clients have no way of knowing if someone truly knows what they’re doing and has the professionalism and experience to perform these services. This story just, doesn’t surprise me… horrifying, and sad, and I feel so bad for that couple, but not surprising to me because I’ve heard of and seen this happen many other times in my area to people. Coming from someone whos struggling, it sounds a bit like this photographer doesnt have the money to give a refund or restore the pictures. Thats probably why they gave them the run around bc when your life depends on what little money you have, if all she had was 1k in the bank you cant refund someone and end up with 0, you could lose your housing, cant pay for gas for other jobs, groceries. Money is terrifying. Im not justifying what she did, she definitely should have been honest and told them the situation and options as soon as it happened. It sounds to me that she was scared. Day of wedding - all of my cameras have 2 memory card slots. Instead of using the second card for overflow, I have it duplicate. I always always always have 2 SD cards of the same images.
When I get home the first thing I do is back up the images to my computer. Once they’re all neatly organized there I back them up on 2 external hard drives. I also have Backblaze that is constantly backing up not only my computer, but it backs up any external hard drives that are connected to my computer. So, I have at least 4 copies of every wedding (one on each hard drive, then each hard drive back up on the cloud). I do not reformat my cards until I triple check that they’re all backed up.

I think some external HD and cloud services even let you schedule routine backups too.

Maybe her SD card got corrupted and she didn't shoot with 2 cards? So she had some photos from a different card but not the others?
They also said that she was working 3 jobs to get by so she probably already spent the $1000 and couldn't refund it, so she was trying to keep delaying them to buy time. Or she's just one of those people who avoids confrontation so they delay it until it's 10x worse than it would have been if they'd just been upfront about it. Either way, stuff happens, but she handled it in the worst way.

This photographer's behavior is awful. She easily could've gotten those files recovered. I do both a digital cloud back up as well as a physical hard drive.

I didn’t do wedding photos, I did portraits ,but I had a home break in and the person stole all my external drives. Then a few days later my hard drive totally crashed and couldn’t be repaired. All the photos I had left from all my past work and of my family was either printed or on Facebook. Ugh. At least 3 complete back ups.

Yep…I was attending a photography class and a young person struck up a conversation with me. They just got a camera a few months ago and were booking weddings. They did not know what ISO meant, aperture settings was a foreign language.! Put that puppy on ‘P’ and shoot away 📸

I accidentally cleared and used a card, spent £80 on some online data recovery and literally got it all back in like minutes. 😩 if only their photographer knew that!

She should have just admitted it immediately and offered full refund (I like the idea of offering a complimentary couple shoot). In the career I’m studying for you have to have a lot of files and they always say to back up in three places. I mean, I have a 3TB drive that I paid less than $200 for and I’m a student. I’m hoping to have multiple TB drives when working professionally

idk what might have happened but if she really lost the pictures I'm guessing it was way earlier on and was afraid to say it and it's so silly she lied about mailing them etc cause then surely sh'ed have emails, copies, something.
if the pictures were bad, badly exposed, unfocused whatever I think it'd be better to send them, I'd rather have bad pictures of my wedding than non at all

If she screwed up the pictures that’s still better than no pictures! Give a refund and show the couple what she does have. If you’re a professional there’s no excuse not to have multiple backup solutions for your data.

I'm not proud about what I'm going to say, but that's exactly how I act when I lie about things I had to do with a deadline. Something for university or similar. Making exuses or pretending that I did something, like in this case the photographer lying about that she mailed the usb.
That's why I detect this lie from 10 miles away.

I have software to get it back if it was deleted off an SD card. If they already took pictures over the ones lost, they may come out missing data, but a good portion would be recovered.

  • @asianpagan

Sounds like something happened to the rest of the photos. She might be green and didn't know how to get them back. And she probably already spent the money, hence the no refund. so now she has nothing to give them but excuses and a bad taste in their mouths.

I'm a beginner still but I always go straight home and download all the pictures on to my computer. I've had the SD become corrupted mid photoshoot. I was ready to cry but when I turned my camera off and back on it fixed itself. I've had it corrupt and it ask me if I wanted it to get fixed and it solved itself. Our computers can fix it. Also use Google photos to put your pictures on if you want a more safe place to store them and share them.

Holy sh*t. Like I once lost a video I made for a client (stupid me deleted the files thinking I backed them up) and I immediately texted my client and not only did I pay for the product to reshoot but I also offered a free photoshoot for anything she wanted.
I still have a wedding photography from 2019 when I first got my camera!!! And backed them up in two different hard drives plus my computer.

  • @DieezahArts

Sometimes viruses affect files on your external drive. As soon as you think there's something up with the files (like file corruption) you should immediately run your antivirus analysis, any other maintenance software you have (like Ccleaner and then yeah, unplug the external hard-drive and reboot. And yeah, several back-up spaces if you can manage that.

I think the photographer lost the pictures early on, was trying their hardest to get them back (understandable) but kept stalling the client as they tried to recover the pictures. Finally, they realized it was not possible to recover the pics and admitted that they'd been lost.
If this was the case, what they should have done was immediately admit to losing the pictures, and told the clients that they were doing their best to recover them providing accurate updates. They should have offered an immediate partial refund with a timeline for their inconvenience- and also promise a FULL refund if they were not able to recover the pictures by a certain date, and a follow-up free photoshoot with the couple and if possible the bridal party. This is my opinion based on having no experience as a photographer. Losing someone's wedding pictures is the worst possible thing for the couple in the context of their wedding day. What a horrible, dishonest person.
Also- having three jobs- Sorry about the photographer's situation, but that's not the couple's problem. Make it right and give the damn refund.

I lost homework in high school and was able to find an only data recovery software that restored it. That was 20 years ago. So no excuse for something that happened only two years ago. With so many backup choices (cloud, usb, external hard drive, SIM card) I find her losing them hard to believe

I had to wait 7 years for my photos.
    Kept getting excuses.
Thankfully I didn't pay for it, his aunt was doing them for us as a wedding present. And when I did get them everything was dark, and the only photos of my family were of them eating.
It's hard to complain since it was free, but 7 years....
