I’m about to buy my first scooter. Never had/rode one nor have I ridden a motorcycle. I’m looking at a fuel injected 170cc. I don’t really need it for city trips although I intend to do so, but I live in Oklahoma with a lot of country roads which I want to ride from one small town to another. I’m elderly and unless I need to exchange for another because I don’t like it, it will be my one and only scooter so I need to start a bit bigger to handle faster roads. ****yes. I am enrolled in an upcoming BCR class! Lol. That will demonstrate to me which scooter fits my needs. Exciting!

You nailed must of the benefits of a scooter. I've owned HD, Victory etc, but now plagued by nerve damage I have to downsize to a scooter and ride only locally. What a blast and you are right about discovering things nearby you didn't know was there. I would say Korean and Taiwanese scooters are now very close to the Japanese brands. For instance SYM made scooters for Honda.

I agree with everything you said,it is so tempting to get a Chinese scooter here in the Uk as they are such a reasonable price, but I would advice people to save up a few hundred more pounds and buy a Japanese bike, just for the peace of mind.

Bought a scooter, fell in love with it..Great for riding in rainy and cold weather...It offers much more protection for the rider. Great for groceries, economical, smooth engine, reliable. Mine is in blue colour too.. Between I own a motorcycle, both are awesome...For instance the motorcycle is good for week-end rides...

I'm a scooter lover myself. Upgrading to Japanese vs Chinese built is highly advisable.

I love my scoots. American scooter aficionado here. I’ve owned several. I currently have a Vespa Sprint Racing Sixties, a Buddy 170i, and a cute little 50cc Honda Metropolitan. I rarely drive my car in the summer and save a ton of $ on gas, which has become absolute necessary these days. A huge plus is being able to park much more easily than people in cars. I’ve never gotten a ticket for parking issues….yet.

I have owned many scooters over the last 20 years or so and I love them. They can be used for pleasure like a motorcycle (especially the larger engined ones) but they are also practical with their weather protection and storage. Add a top case and they can carry the week's groceries. They can replace a car. I have just bought a Honda Forza 350 and it will replace my car shortly.

right now in our country suzuki burgman 125cc is just released from the market. I agree with about scooters for utility purposes. You can also install a topbox behind for extra compartment...

Chinese are a third if the cost of the Honda, and Yamaha, but if you are technical and mechanically inclined Chinese scooters are a great deal/value. I will get another Chinese brand preferably Tao Tao because I like to work on and modify them as a hobby and creative outlet.
It gives me something to do besides drink beer in my spare time.

It's interesting to see that in America, you guys classify scooters different from motorcycles (big bikes), here in South East Asia, scooters, mopeds and big bikes are all motorcycles and require a motorcycle licence, with the big superbikes 500cc and above requiring a different licence.
I'm a scooter rider, myself, I agree, it's very easy, as I was already well-versed on the bicycle. I can also ride a semi automatic underbone/moped (similar in size). Scooters and mopeds are absolutely convenient, ours aren't actually that slow, in my country, scooters can go on highways as well, but I love riding it to avoid traffic jams and just the feeling of freedom, and like most bikes, it's so fuel efficient and has saved me a lot of money compared to driving a car.
Japanese bikes are the way to go, very solid, Taiwanese ones are good as well, just not the Chinese ones. Mine is a Yamaha.

What do you think of the new electric scooters and bicycle that are popping up everywhere? Is it taking off in South East Asia?

I've seen some electric bicycles around but not electric motorcycle scooters just yet (just to not to be confused, I think you meant the electric version of scooters 🛵 rather than electric scooters 🛴).
Speaking of electric vehicles that can actually go on roads and highways, they aren't that popular in my country and neighbours countries just yet, mainly because we aren't high income countries, for the exception of Singapore. I do think that electric version of these motorbikes are great options but more charging and battery swapping stations need to be built, right now they're still hard to find, thus causing inconvenience. I foresee that they will take a long time to be widespread especially when our government isn't doing much to promote them, like in Taiwan, there's subsidy and encouragement from the government to own electric scooter bikes and battery swapping stations are widespread.

At 2:24 - I hate winter cold and even more, I hate cold and rain. I bought a tall windscreen. I prefer to look over a windscreen instead of through it, so I cut it down to about 1 inch below eye level using painters tape, jigsaw, and a marker. When riding, I am looking over it and the wind and rain are kicked up just enough to clear the top of my helmet while riding, so that the top of my helmet stays dry during winter rains. Tall windscreens also normally cover the grips so keep cold air away from your hands. In the summer I don't want to be in the "bubble" anymore so remove it.

The police dont really bother a 150 cc they aren't that much bigger then the 50cc. My main concern is are Chinese scooter parts available to get?

Very interesting subject, my question is .can you carry another person with you on a 50cc scooter? And stay legal with only a drivers license?( Oahu Hawaii). Thanks for all the useful information you provided. Joe

    • @motardsquid
      @motardsquid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Joseph, this 50cc does not have passenger footpegs and really can't handle a passenger. The seat is too small as well. But many 50cc's have passenger pegs and can handle a passenger. The moment you put a passenger on the bike slows down terribly btw. But ive squeezed a passenger in there for a short ride and it's fine, just not comfortable. You dont need a moto license, but you usually need a permit or car license to ride one of these. But most cops don't seem to care too much about who rides these.

I ride alot of things on two wheels, bicycle, e-bike, 110cc, 150cc scooters and a Harley Electra Glide in the garage now. Each one has it's own lane. Pedestrians don't like bicyclists riding on sidewalks when a bike lane is available. Bicyclists hate scooters in bike lanes. No one likes 50cc scooters on 55mph roads. Riding a 150cc machine on an interstate at 70mph is not a task for the weak of heart. Pick the smallest machine that covers your needs. As for parking, you can get away with something until you don't. There are cities here in iowa that would ticket a scooter on a sidewalk in a heatbeat. After 47 years on these things it's more fun to be one size big than one too small. If you want an indicator on the toughest brands check out the Scooter Cannonball Run (across the USA) videos. The 3,500 miles in seven days sorts the weak from the warriors quickly. The Honda/Yamaha seem to be the road warriors. The Tiwanese(Lil buddy types) a close second and Vespas a clear third but those riders want Vespas and make them work. I personally am in the Vespa category on scooters. In the end find a cheap something, ride it and by the 3rd one you will either give it up or find the kind you like regardless of relative cost or frankly best quality/value.

on roads without a bike lane should you just ride on the shoulder all the time? I would think cars would constantly be running up on you in the lane.
