Great chat! Sorry I missed it when it was live. Just a few notes: Standards were not just about morale; it was an easy way, in the midst of combat, to see what's going on. Are we winning? Are we losing? Where is the rest of my unit? Oh, there's the standard! We're still in the fight and I can see what the rest of my unit is doing.
Camp followers provided all sorts of services for the armies they followed in addition to "entertainment." Laundry services, additional medical services (mostly folk remedies, but that might be more than enough for a blister or the like), repair for kit, and sundry incidentals like combs, spare laces or shirts, fishing hooks, chains and rope, etc. They were pre-industrial PX and an extra supply chain that worked around the official channels.

Great comments :) Yeah writers often neglect the amount of work it takes to keep a soldier in the field.

Controlling communication could be an excellent plot device tricking people into surrendering

Kudos for mentioning camp followers, who are too often left out of both fantasy novels and histories of real wars. We tend to think of camp followers as merely serving soldiers’ baser needs, and they certainly did a lot of that, but they also mended clothes, cooked meals, helped nurse the sick and wounded, and did a thousand other services for very little recognition. In the last D&D game I DMed, one encounter centered around an enemy spy who was stationed not in the heroes’ army itself, but among the camp followers, because who pays attention to them?
Regarding fantasy air units, their greatest importance by far is reconnaissance, not ground attack or logistics. Almost all flying species have superb vision, except certain nocturnal flyers (owls have great eyes, bats rather mediocre ones), so they’re ideal for reporting enemy movements and positions. But most flying species will be adapted to lift only themselves, not heavy loads of supplies or ordnance. A predatory species may be adapted to carry away a small prey animal, and so you might be able to swap out the prey for a clay pot of Greek fire or just a rock , since even a small rock dropped from a great height is a fearsome weapon. As for logistics, though? Our griffin, pegasus or dragon will almost certainly have to eat much more to stay healthy and airborne than it can deliver to the friendly troops.

Good points, though I would add that a flying species could be a great skirmish troops.

Maan! You're amazing! I'm an African immigrant currently living in Belgium. And, since here, I've found myself so enthralled by the medieval period and basically any historical warfare too (Japan probably being my favorite to research). But, by far, your videos are the best I've come across in a while. A real treat. I learn so much, while also being genuinely entertained by your personality and obvious passion for fantasy and history as a whole... oh, and let's not forget your photobombing kitten too. You've been motivating me to go beyond just researching stuff, and actually start my own story too, while trying to keep it as accurate as possible. I could never thank you enough for that. Your passion is so contagious!
Gotta go now... On to the 4h long Ultimate Guide to War video!

Welcome :D I'm also from Africa. Migrated from the southern tip of Africa to the northern tip of Europe! And you should absolutely write your story, I look forward to reading it someday.

@@JustInTimeWorlds Oh, wow! Look at that! I couldn't have guessed it... Does your South African origins explain how you know about Shaka too? Also, and unfortunately, I couldn't write for crap even to save my life... I do however have a passion for visual storytelling. I've been drawing since I was a kid as well. So, the idea that sprang from watching your videos and others' too, is to, hopefully, start making my own animated shows or movies someday. And who knows, maybe I'd even get a chance at the big screen too. But yeah, I feel motivated to create a whole fantasy world for people to explore and in which they could escape and immerse themselves in using all your teachings.

I love the idea of magic based logistics and use games like D&D or Pathfinder to play with these ideas. So far, Druids are my ultimate standard soldier. They can wildshape into animals to cross boarders or sneak into cities. Plus, they can be turned into miniature statues using the Carry Companion spell, allowing for a large quantity to be smuggled in cargo or a bag of holding. They get create water and goodberry to solve ration problems while not miniaturized. They are trained in both light and medium armors. They can use Shape Wood to quickly form weapons or fortifications, plus magically reinforce that wood. D&D druids get Mold Earth, which allows for quick trenching and bracing of walls. They can call an aminals for aid. They have access to healing magic, buffing magic, debuffing magic, and terrain manipulation. They can pass through wooded areas without trace or even hide inside of trees and stone. The fact that they can turn into animals capable of being mounts means that you can make impromptu calvary units by temporarily halving your fighting numbers. A lot of the features of this class make for interesting elements to potentially steel from in writing a magical military force.

Hello from Ukraine! Thank you for the content! You are right to my mind. It is so important not to describe war as a time for fun and romantic relationships as it is done in some popular books and films. There is much more place for blood and tears, and crucial choises, so that every next dawn you see is a proof that you are brave enough to stay and live and do what you have to do. I am glad to find your channel. Could you please say some words about wars and wariants of battlesin space and their features? Thanks!

Caesar one time had a speech where it's legions were afraid of Germans as they were taller and savage. The imperator shamed all legions but the X that they would surely follow. The rest of the regions didn't want to be shown as cowards so they pledged to fight to the bitter end.

Yes, Romans were very proud of its legion, it was common practice to incite competition to outperform the others to gain popularity. I guess trying that on levies wouldn't work tho.@@JustInTimeWorlds

I always use the realistic consequences of the fantasy element.
For example, if dragons were real, what kind of habitats would they living, and how much they would need to eat. The amount of food they need to eat will determine how much cattle they steal from the human farmers every year. And that will determine how many animals the farmers need to raise in order to still turn a profit and keep everybody fed while accommodating for the losses to dragons every year. The amount of cattle that needs to be raised, will tell you how big the farm needs to be, which will tell you approximately how big the town or city has to be to be functional and still make their farming system work.
Or let's say that one side and a war has swords that cut through any armor. Well the other side would very quickly stop wearing armor versus this country because the weight and agility limitations from armor is no longer worth it because the armor can't protect them. The consequences of this is a change to both the individual and tactical fighting styles of the army, and the armor making industry in the country would take a massive hit. This would lead to more unemployed people which would lead to more need for government welfare which would lead to modifying the economic system to account for this, or just letting the people starve.
