    I just tried tempeh for the first time and it was amazinggg.
    Cut it in thin slices and steamed first!(supposedly gets rid of some bitterness and opens pores up to better marinate) Then marinated in a mixture of: soy sauce, honey, Asian chili garlic sauce (or sriracha), onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and a smidge of bbq sauce. Pan fried till crisp edges. It tastes like Hawaiian bbq!🤤 had it with some Mac salad and shredded Cabbage. Idk if I want to try making it any other way

    Great video, Shakayla! Tempeh is very bitter if it's not prepared properly. The key is to steam it to release all the bitterness before proceeding to use it in your recipes. You can do this on the stove, but I steam it for 15min in the instant pot. It's a total gamechanger! I'm so happy to see you prioritizing eating a high protein diet! Even people who are not plant based lack getting enough protein in their diets. Protein increases satiety hormones, and that's what we want- to feel full and satisfied!👍🏽🥰

    If you boil or steam your tempeh whole for about 10 minutes, it cuts down on that strong taste that maybe you don’t enjoy. I really disliked tempeh when i first tried it, but steaming first definitely helps! Check out some of Rainbow Plant Life’s tempeh recipes (the tacos!!!).

    Tempeh: i steam it/boil it for 10 mins so it softens a little and it takes away bitterness (I just leave enough water to fill the bottom of the pan so if sliced the slices would be half above water not a full quart boil). Then crumble or slice and sauté 1tbsp of each:
    Coconut aminos/ponzu sauce
    Kimchi hot sauce
    Lemon juice
    Maple syrup

    Shakayla, I love you and your channel, and I love the study of nutrition. I am plant based and have read lots on the subject of protein. If you read the latest scientific research on longevity - one book is called The Longevity Diet - by Valter Longo, the leading researcher on longevity in the world -he shows that a lower protein diet until around age 65 is what is optimal for longer life. (After age 65 we lose weight and muscle so it should be increased slightly)
    He discusses how high protein intake causes the activation of the growth hormone receptor, which increases levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is associated with diabetes, cancer and accelerates aging. He stresses low but sufficient proteins - 0.31 to 0.36 grams per pound of body weight per day (130 lbs - 40-47g) (200 lbs - 60-70 g). Also, from working in the medical field for the past 15 years, I see high protein associated with kidney disease.
    Anyway, I wanted to share this with you because I do care about you since following you all this time💗

    I see you use nutritional yeast a lot. I’m very new to all of this could you explain?

      Yep! It has a nutty flavor and is often used in dishes to bring on a cheese like flavor

    I make tempeh into a garlic spicy maple bacon. I understand what you mean about the suspicious taste 😂

      That garlic spicy maple bacon does sound tempting though!! Is that your fav thing to make with the tempeh?

    Do you know why you need 100grams of protein a day? Are you starting a muscle building journey or....?

    • @Shakaylafelice
      @Shakaylafelice  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s exactly it! I’ve been strength training to build muscle and based off what I’ve learned so far, getting an adequate amount of protein is important to do so.

    • @ipsilonia
      @ipsilonia 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      even if you’re not building muscle, it’s important to get lots of daily protein (1-2g of protein for each pound you weigh, usually). and plant based ppl tend to have lower protein intake, so we have to be more intentional about it like shakayla said.

    TOFU 🫶 ❤ Your sauce recipe for the edamame sounds like it would be good for the tempeh. We like to crumble the tempeh, season it, and air fry it. It’s a different texture and makes a great taco or salad topping … or literally any kind of topping 🌮🥗🫘💪

      @Shakaylafelice  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ooo I’ll give that a try with this tempeh then
