Donations to my local library are sold on their book sale. They regularly purge the books on their shelves. I can get things thru inter library loan or as ebooks if I want to reread a book I no longer own.

I am in my early 60s, and over my lifetime I have owned between 1,200 and 1,500 books, if you count all the books i had to buy for my degree programs. I am now down to about 200-250 books and 150 journals/magazines. My goal is to get down to 20 cookbooks, 70 other books, and 30 journals.

Thank you for your video and suggestions on book decluttering. I am an avid reader, and last October I decluttered 147 books. My book collection isn’t too bad right now, but I am going to use some of your suggestions. Like you, I also have been using the library for audiobooks and for reading books. Thanks.

I just started this process and it is daunting. We have books everywhere. I am so glad that you understand the book dragon mentality and the various options to address “keepers”.
I am getting rid of coffee table books and others by donating them to our local Friends of the Library for resale or other charities.

When you mention book swapping at the end, my mind goes to the Pokemon episode where Ash is persuaded to trade his Butterfree with a Raticate. 😢

My books are my friends. Lots are collectors editions. You cannot get them again. So no, they are going no where. I do have duplicates and some I'm not attached to, but as long as I can store them in boxes in my garage, that is where they will stay.

As I said in the video -- "you do what feels good to you"!

Ooooh …. NC ! I’m moving there in a year. And it’d be easier to do if I further downsize my book collection. Thank you. Liz

I get my books signed most of the time. It gives me an excuse to keep them.

NOPE! Not giving to the library cause they don't hang on to it and nope to all digital. I do purge but only the books I dislike.

I'm thinking of going paperless. In my entire home.

HA HA HA HA. The Hobbit was one of the worst books I had to read in high school. Thankfully the library had already been almost my second home for many years before then so it didn't put me off reading.

Audiobooks don't count as "reading", you're listening to something, you're not reading anything. That is like saying, "I am reading my podcast." Great video, and great insight. Thanks!

Hannah, I agree wholeheartedly. Reading is an entirely different experience. I bristle when people say they read a book on Audible. Huh? They listened to it--probably while driving, doing the laundry or cleaning the house and tuning out half the time. It's not an immersive experience or one where the reader can reread and meditate on a well-written passage or flip back a page to clarify a detail. Thanks for putting it so well in your comment.

No problem. I completely agree with tuning out an audiobook. I usually "listen" to an audiobook I've read at least once, just to have background noise. I actually hear maybe 2/3 of it, and sometimes I have to go back and listen to a chapter or two because I missed something. I tried listening to a book I had never read before, and I won't be doing that again. I had to go back so often; it was kind of annoying.@@g.p.ryecroft

Why? Why do you need to say something so rude? That’s what’s so great about your ability to not watch. Katy appears to be an articulate, attractive woman who is trying to help other people. Thank you Katy
