weird story.....my father was always telling us how he eventually wanted to get a leonberger...his name was leon. we always thought there was no such dog. 3 days after he died of cancer, my brother and i are driving home and we see a bumper sticker in front of us...."if it's not a leonberger...it's just a dog." wow!
We have three family dogs, a pomeranian, a corgi and a leonberger. George, our leo, is the most affectionate, smartest, cuddliest and loving dog I've ever met. A true gentle giant.
I looked after a male Leonburger while the owners were on holiday. He was so well trained and trustworthy. While with us, a cyst formed in his skin and I had to clean it out with iodine. Imagine! He gently, without using his teeth, tried to nudge me off with his huge mouth but had he been at all aggressive he could have had my hand off. Reliable, safe and trustworthy breed but do need plenty emotional reassurance and keeping company. Prone to health issues probably due to inbreeding and do not have a long lifespan. I grew up with lovely labradors but that Leonburger was seriously the nicest dog ever. A child who was petrified of dogs came to cuddle him while he lay passively.
I would have gotten one, if not for the short lifespan. Got a Malamute instead Lovely Dude, but I will probably always be throwing looks at Leonbergers, when I see them.

I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE THIS! I MET ONE ONLY TODAY (the day of publication). I thought he was some form of Malinois, with his narrow "Alsation" muzzle and mannerisms... Yet there was something different, very different. The 3 month old puppy was being very well behaved on the bus, with his human almost constantly reassuring him and basically being a model owner in a strange environment. When we got off the bus, we had a little meet and greet, and although a bit aloof to start, he quickly warmed up and gently sought a little bit of attention from anyone within leash reach. One thing he definitely wasn't was goofy in any way. Very powerful intellect... And SUCH a soft coat!
Our Leonberger was the smartest and most affectionate dog ever. He was a family member for ten years, and we still honor his memory. He had the soul of a poet.
My big goomba was only part Leo, but what a personality, loyal, smart, loving, intelligent.... RIP Titan Agustus Aug 21-2021 13 years of the best dog I ever had.
I’m sorry for your loss❤ I had a part Leo called Dreyfus. He was the best dog ever. He was a big lug, he was funny, playful, sweet and the best watchdog ever.
I had the privilege of meeting a leonburger. After loosing a very special dog, I went to a rescue to look at the dogs. This majestic leonburger was in the lobby & pretty much nudged me to the bench. I began crying as I was hugging him & he gently got in my lap & hugged me back. Unfortunately he was not up for adoption. I fell in love with leonburgers that day. 😍 ❤
That is a very much a Leonberger thing to do. Ours have done similar things with complete strangers who were down and just needed a hug. They seem to sense that. We were at the vet one day with one of ours and a woman in the waiting area was distraught about her cat. Our Leo went across the room, sat next to her, leaned on her and put her head in her lap as she seemed to be consoling her. The woman said she was never a dog person until that moment.
@@michaelg3911 You are blessed to own such a regal dog! This encounter I had with this precious leonburger will forever be etched into my heart. About 3 months after that encounter I adopted a senior 85lb goofball best described as looking like a black golden retriever, pulls like a malamute, with a beagle nose & labrador goofiness. I’ve been waiting forever for this vid to drop 🥰 Leos are amazing! Yes they shed all the time but they don’t drool so there’s that…and they really do love to play all the time. They’re surprisingly fast and agile for a giant breed…and they never meet a person or animal they don’t like(or want to play with 😂). I never had problems with odor if they’re brushed daily and wiping the ears, brushing teeth…they’re very tolerant of all that. Wonderful lovely doggos💗 Ty for doing this vid💗💐
Nice post but the part about them not ever meeting an animal they don't like isn't completely accurate. I've had two leo's. My first one would fight with almost every dog we came upon. He was a super alpha male. My second leo, also male, is friendlier but every once in a while we meet a dog he doesn't like and there are problems. Especially if he's on lease and another male comes along off leash and tries to sniff him. That's not happening.
What a very nice informal study on the Leonberger. You and your guests included a lot of the basic background on the Breed and provided valuable information for anyone considering bringing a Leo into their home. Having both Leos and Pyrs, I'd say the Leos are much more willing to please then the Pyrs are, and that's due to the Pyrs having worked as guardian breed for so many hundreds of years without a lot of human interaction.

We live in Wisconsin and had never heard of this breed until the other day when we ran into one at the dog park. I was floored to learn this puppy was about 80lbs and only 4 months old!! Anyhow, we have a blind puppy (10 months old and about 55lbs). We are looking for another dog to help her navigate her surroundings and the Leonberger is now high on the list. Question: for those of you who have one, do you think the Leonberger would be a good fit for a blind dog? We have a large fenced-in backyard and go to the dog park or other parks daily.
I have kept Himalayan mastiff followed by German shepherd ,Bully Kutta and finally Rottweiler . Rottweiler is the best dog in almost every manner . These Leonbergers resemble Bakarwal dogs found in Kashmir Himalayas although they are slightly larger .
There is a guy with a male one near my old house must be 90kg 29 at the whithers it's huge but very gentle, these giant breeds mature really slowly so they are still like pups at 4 years old bless them
@@lisacarr8654 I'm only guessing at the weight my corso was 55 and with the illusion of hair this thing looks 90kg .. in reality it's prob 70 but the coat makes it appear a monster.
My Leo is just fantastic absolutely a gentle giant but he does have a tendency to hunt squirrels and rabbits in the yard he learned that from my two coonhound mixes all dogs are male and are the best of friends
I've met 2 Leonbergers. First was a young fellow, about 2 years and was curious and friendly. The wasn't as friendly as she apparently disliked peopĺe reaching towards her face but still open to strangers giving her a pat if done from the side. Both lovely dogs but nowhere near as gregarious as the ones in this video.
They remind me of St. Bernards and German Shepherds, Newfy faces. I looked up the breed because of the dog walker who was just killed walking 8 dogs. It almost seems like something happened to have such a thing happen. I think 2 dogs is enough to walk together but they are saying 4-6 max. Leashes get tangled and stuff, ya know.

Wowwww!!! Awesome 😍😍👌👍.. Fantastic vdo to know about this lovely breed 👏👏👏👍👍
You got a very typical Leo greeting ❤
I have kept Himalayan mastiff followed by German shepherd ,Bully Kutta and finally Rottweiler . Rottweiler is the best dog in almost every manner . These Leonbergers resemble Bakarwal dogs found in Kashmir Himalayas although they are slightly larger .
Those dogs look so cuddly...
On of the sweetest dogs ever.
Any plans for a video on the Broholmer, Anneka? I hear a youngster is coming to live in London, shortly, and there is an adult male in Dublin, too.
There is a guy with a male one near my old house must be 90kg 29 at the whithers it's huge but very gentle, these giant breeds mature really slowly so they are still like pups at 4 years old bless them
If 90kg will be taller than that or very over weight
@@lisacarr8654 I'm only guessing at the weight my corso was 55 and with the illusion of hair this thing looks 90kg .. in reality it's prob 70 but the coat makes it appear a monster.
I should have worded that comment better sorry, looks 90kg*
thanks

My Leo is just fantastic absolutely a gentle giant but he does have a tendency to hunt squirrels and rabbits in the yard he learned that from my two coonhound mixes all dogs are male and are the best of friends
Love the big guys 💖
Beautiful dogs...my neighbor has one...such a sweetheart...her and my German Shepherd are best freinds.
I got gsd's. These are just extra large ones but can't take the shedding now. Leonbergers must be for those with housekeepers.
Omg I love this breed above all others! I want one sooooo badly
Magnifici esemplari.....big friends
Please, make one on the Serra da Estrela dog, a gorgeous Portuguese breed. Cheers.
