Ireland's wonderful broad gauge locomotives! It's interesting how this 4-4-0 looks somewhat midsize in pictures without people, but then when you see another with someone next to it, you notice the size difference more.
GNRI: "Hey can I copy your homework?" LMS: "Sure, just make it look different so that it doesn't look like you just copied it." GNRI: "sure thing." And thats how the Class V was made.
Then the GNR(I) needed somthing bigger. GNR(I): Hey can I copy your homework? Southern Railway: Sure just change it a bit so it doesnt look obvious GNR(I) Sure thing. Then the VS class was born.
@Dan T technically speaking they were not bigger in size but hey have a lot more power. I am comparing them to the Schools because they have smoke deflectors (like the schools), 3 cylinders (like the schools) and massive drive wheels (like the schools). The only real difference between them is the fact it is a V class on top of a VS class frame. I think the size of the drivers and cylinders is a bit different aswell but im not sure. Thats where the "just change it a bit" came from.
I went to the main place of the RPSI last month but sadly didn’t see merlin, it is a beautiful loco and I hope I can ride on a train pulled by it someday
For those interested, these Compounds are so powerful, they could theoretically keep to the same timetable as the modern Enterprise Express push-pull sets. Hasn't happened yet in preservation, but who knows...
The whole video im sitting here saying to myself "that thing would look cool af spinning the drivers" and wouldn't you know it, you came through at the end! Lol
The NER had many compounds that worked, notably including the 3CC which inspired Johnson and the 4CC atlantics which were very highly regarded, but not replicated due to a dispute around patent royalties.
The 3 Smith (chief draughtsman of the NER) compounds also worked, extremely well. Unfortunately he died and his relatives would not permit the NER to build more.
Some of those references! Did you have one internal voice saying "Don't"...and another saying "Go on, go on, go on, go on go on go on go on go on etc." I apolergize prefusely! MS=
@@ChristheXelent well why not dov a sole slip on the D&SER K2 mogul no. 461? Shes tge only mogul with inside cylinders and valve gear left in europe i do believe.
Unfortunately no. Ireland uses a broad gauge of 5ft 3in as opposed to Britain's standard 4ft 8 and a half. It would probably be an expensive job to re gauge Irish loco's to fit the British network.
Daniel O'Hare. You could probably do it by putting the wheels inside the frames and adding outside cranks and rods. Making them look abit like 'City of Truro' or a dukedog
That is the top half of no. 3BG 'guinness'. Shes an 0-4-0 saddle tank built by hunslet for the guinness distillary. She was being overhauled at the time of this film.
Yes. We use 5ft 3 inch gauge because our land is much softer than britains because we are britains rain shield. If ireland wasnt in the way, the uk would get much more rain. Therefore making ground softer and its more likely to sink. 5ft 3" gauge has a larger footprint. Thus its less likely to sink.
@@Spud607 No, that's completely wrong. The larger gauge is cause of a gauge disagreement. 5 3 was chosen as a standard as it was the middle ground between the 2 already built lines.
its not a bad choice for a model of edward but look up GNR(I) Q-class no 131 known originaly as Uranus or GNR(I) Js-class No 88 Victoria rebuilt into a P-class they are alot closer than merlin
My Grandfather Drove the Merlin Dublin to Belfast and Back. Very Proud of Him

I couldn't help but chuckle at the sly references you made to Father Ted! ;D

She is lovely
Actually happened in the 1980’s.
I was very lucky to see her briefly going over a bridge leaving Connolly station last year!
The whole video im sitting here saying to myself "that thing would look cool af spinning the drivers" and wouldn't you know it, you came through at the end! Lol
Brilliant use of the long shot and close up shot, it's evident you took the time to ensure Merlin was captured perfectly.
4-4-0s are my favorite and this one is no exception wonderful looking
The NER had many compounds that worked, notably including the 3CC which inspired Johnson and the 4CC atlantics which were very highly regarded, but not replicated due to a dispute around patent royalties.
What an elegant locomotive! I know nothing about Irish railway preservation; a loss I feel I should correct.
Live in N.Ireland and been on this train before great trip. Dude scared the life out of me with da whistle

Another great Sole Slip episode Chris, and it's good to see another steam engine running, and in Ireland too. I love the whistle too.
The GCR class 8e were also compounds and worked as well.
Nice video, loved the wheel slip and agreed, she does look like a beauty
Trains are friends, not food.
And yet, friends are food, not trains.
So The Other "Merlin" was a LSWR/Southern King Arthur-Class 4-6-0?
Yes, shamefully (merlin from T&F JBS)
WHAT ABOUT THE LNER A4
She is indeed a lovely machine.
Any plans for a SOLE SLIP of her elder cousin, S Class "Slieve Gullion"?
They should have preserved 'boyne'
"Craggy Island country." Don't let Ted near the thing!
Loved the father ted reference. 😂
As an Irish man, I find it a royal shame that not many Irish steam locomotives survive.
More so the oddities like the CC1 turf burner.
Great video as always. Bonus points for the Father Ted references.
awsome mate
Did anyone else note the converted electric lamps at the front? Interesting modification.
Thanks... we think they look classy :)
Nice loco... Not THAT far away though, Chris.
I can’t believe I never heard of these 😱😱😱
nice vid
Ace SOLE Slip Chis :-D a loco I'd like to see & experience close up
That wheel slip though

Took a little bit for her to get a grip.
Yep. THAT Harland and Wolff. The 1 that built Titanic
Was any other of this clas, or any other preserved? What about the “birds”. Ex Belfast, now Australia, 55 years, never been back.
Nope, hence sole slip... Though there were 2 other GNR(i) 4-4-0s, 131 & 171.
Good video - is it bad to like and see steam locos wheel slip?
Put beer in its tank and see if it'll steam!
Can you do a sole slip on highland Railway no 103?
I'm lucky I live in the same contrey as her lol
Hey Chris when you can and have the time can you do a video about the A1X Stroudley Terrier 0-6-0T
+SteamMaster Game Hub I already have. It's on the Volume One DVD
If only you made one for the LB&SCR E1.
Isn’t there an A4 named Merlin?
Do a sole slip on the GSR 400 class 4-6-0s
Mary Weir Unless someones builds a new one, its not really possible sadly

I wonder if some Irish locomotives like this one can fit on British standard gauge track like they did on their own track in Ireland, can they?

British engines can come to ireland butvirish engines cant go to britain. The frames are too wide.

A boiler, half of a cab, and boiler of a 0-4-0 saddle tank

I think there was an A4 called Merlin.
Yes there was. It was 60027 Merlin. Scrapped unfortunately.
Sir Nigel Gresley is the best Very sad that No' 60027 Merlin didn't make it. :(
Plus a King Arthur
please do a sole slip on the war department loco
jo Winstanley …which one?
I believe they are referring to the WD Austerity 2-8-0, No.90733. Me, personally, I'd love to see a Sole SLIP on LNWR's "Hardwicke".
I think I shall always refer to Ireland as 'Craggy Island Country' now! :D

Don't the Irish use a broader gauge than the standard 4ft 8.5 inches?

A mogul is a 2-6-0

FECKIN' SLIPPIN' DRIVERS.

Because designer wanna that color remind pop out because blue unqine mostly in British are red , striped train streams in painted green or black.
It isn't Caledonian Blue, It's GNR(I) blue.
