Finished Gauge 1 Midland Johnson Single

- This is the first run of the now painted and lined Gauge 1 live steam Midland Railway 2601 Class Johnson SIngle Wheeler in the "London Style" livery.
This model was scratch built over a time of some eleven years (admittedly delayed by some distractions, slowing down progress occasionally) and has just recently been successfully steamed for the first time. Enjoy watching the video and happy steaming.

Very impressive, you have done a lovely paint job and an elegant locomotive. Even more impressive that you were able to run first time after the paint job and with a full rake of coaches and had no issues. I takes me a while and a few tweaks to get mine running properly. The first time I have seen what looks like a permanent indoor Gauge One layout again this is also nicely done.
Very nice, lovely attention to detail, classy looking loco and coaches sounds like it runs perfect - Much Respect. I wish I had the space for an indoor layout.
Yes, it runs like a clockwork. There are not many rods which can bind.
My father, born 1907 Leicester called them 'Johnson Spinners' though, living near the GN at Humberstone, he retired to bed at 6pm to the sound of Stirling Singles, put 'out to grass' on his line. He loved the Midland though.
Hi John, glad you like the model and that it brings back happy memories. It is indeed difficult not to succumb to the charm of the Midland Spinners. Samuel Waite Johnson was deservedly called the 'Midland Railway Locomotive Engineer Artist'.

No, it isn't remote controlled, just a well made, freely running chassis which runs very steadily.

Did you dismantle the model to paint it? The paint is astonishing. Bravo.
Yes, the engine was completely dismantled for painting. The model was designed from very beginning like an Aster model, completely dismantable, with hidden screws wherever possible. The complex painting would be almost impossible to apply without this. Especially the lining, which was masterfully executed by Liz Marsden.

I'm just wondering if gauge 1 is the same that O gauge?
Not exactly. Gauge 1 is to 1:32 scale, 0 Gauge 1:43. So Gauge 1 is larger and is quite a bit larger and considered to be the smallest Gauge for a wide use of live steam. Although, there are also some fine examples for live steam 0 Gauge lococs. Some nice videos can be seen on YT.

What size room is your layout in? I am thinking of an indoor layout but not sure of space required for gauge 1
The - more or less - oval layout is about 20ft by 65ft in size. Smaller will do it too. To my experience, even small layouts can be very interesting to look at as long as the train gets out of sight occasionally (tunnel, cutting, bush/shrubs when outdoor). Kind of Gauge 1 lingerie I reckon...
