    Nice succinct short video on an old preservation pioneer. And a belated "well done" for winning the competition, Chris!

    This locomotive even went to the USA in 1991, for the Sacremento Railfair held for the 10th anniversary of the California State Railroad Museum. Saw an old BBC film and an eaqually old American news broadcast on the event on YouTbe several years ago. :)

      That'll be LNER 4496 if you want to go with her pre-BR identity. She even had a different name when she was first built. That name was Golden Shuttle. It wasn't until after the Second World War that she was renamed after Eisenhower, after the guy used it as his rolling campaign headquaters.

    This is one of my favourite engines, not because it’s massive or powerful, its because of what it means, without this little tank engine we may not have engine like mallard or Scotsman to savour today

    I should've suspected you were behind that character! I love your work in these videos, they give a very personal explanation of the locomotives!

    0:23 not one of ireland engines either. As far as I know the first preserved irish steam loco apart the the one in crk was brought in 1960

    seen her in real life a couple of times, didn't realise her significance till I reread a book. very shocked something so important is placed almost in the very back of the NRM with just a small tag saying "this is a shunter engine"

  • @owenmeschter9888
    @owenmeschter9888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    She was also one of the very first locomotives to run on the KVWR in the mid 1960's. I think Captain Bill Smith may have bought this simply just due to the fact that the loco was charming, and if he ran out of money to run it in the 1980's, the A4 or A3 he could have bought might have only lasted a year.

    I grew up and learned after all this time that Alf was a creation of Chris Eden green this whole time.

    Oh my goodness- now that I've been to England these engines are becoming personal.
    I didn't recognize the engine, but I recognized that it was the NRM, and I looked through my pictures of the visit and confirmed I had seen her! :)
    Also, I had also wondered when you mentioned her history if she was the engine in that BRWS video; and on the flip side I had always wondered if that engine was real or not.

    Of the BRWS Character entries I've watched, I never did get to see Alf's.

    Many people say he could have gotten a a3 but if i were to buy an engine from the southern region instead of a merchant navy i would probably get a a1 terrier

    I've seen an audio recording on the mid-sodor's Stanley, and you sounded just like his driver. Did you happen to voice him? This took place between 2009 and 2012.

    Hey, is that the engine basis for your winning entry "Alf" in that BRWS contest, Chris? You won because of your entry and the engine you based Alf of!
