🐶🐶 WOOF WOOF! Between weird shifts at work, and illnesses, it's been about 3 weeks since I've filmed a video. During that time, I've been reminiscing about this hobby, and here are my 10 regrets that I wish someone would've warned me about in the beginning! 🤯
    .
If you want to support the channel, why not treat yourself to something from the channel sponsor: OrganicPricedBooks! Make sure you use code WOOFWOOF for $2 off your orders! 💵 Ordering 3 or more books together? Use code WOOFWOOFSHIPITTOGETHER for 5% off your entire order! 🤯
    .
Hope you guys enjoy! Not too in love with the thumbnail, but I wanted do another discussion topic to get me back in the groove with filming. Give it a like, subscribe if you're new, and share where you can! 💪
    .
Working on a review next, but until then, stay Mad, Doggs! WOOF WOOF! 🐶

I’ve just started collecting this week, I’ve got an ace local shop thats has boxes of comics going back the last 40 years, all for about 2/3 pounds each. I’m really enjoying just jumping in with no clue what’s good, what writers/illustrators etc. Just literally judging the book by it’s cover and finding what I like. I’m collecting the old issues because they’re the most charming to me, even the advertisements are cool, for things like QBert, Sega Genesis and tons of small town conventions that happened 30 years ago, it’s all so cool to me.

Type in the right things and you can read them for free. Then when find one series you absolutely love, THEN go and buy them. The best ones are the ones you repeat read.
    Libraries are great too.

I actually liked this video and now subscribed. I jumped into comic books recently. (Came from collecting cards of all types until i got bored) Mostly, just buying a bunch In bulk here and there. Now I probably have 3,000 comics or more... but I don't how to "collect" them... so I watched a bunch of videos and they all focused on the value and flipping... and I was ready to jump Ship because I wanted to have fun not be this hard-core investor and those videos were leaving a sour taste in my mouth... but you talk about actually reading them and enjoying them... awesome.

Great list and despite having learned most of these lessons over the years there are some mistakes that I just can't help myself from repeating.
Also, DareDevil hasn't had a bad run in the last 25 years, or even more, because he has pretty much always had just one book which made it much easier to keep quality and continuity consistent, something that cannot unfortunately be said for Spider-Man who has been victim of his own success.

I've just started the hobby for 3 months and bought all sorts of comics/graphic novels across all genres so I don't worry about not branching out at all lol. I'm only buying what I'm interested in and "catching up" for lost time and 80s comics' art style do not interest me at all. You, nearmintcondition, gem mint, omnibus collector, the hardcover comic have all influenced me greatly ;)

I never went into collecting comics for money. I did it because I've enjoyed them since I was three years-old. (I'm nearly 50 now.) I still love the Roy Thomas/Barry Windsor-Smith/John Buscema CONAN to this day, especially after Roy Thomas himself gave me my first professional writing gig 10 years ago.

    • @jamesl4857
      @jamesl4857 ปีที่แล้ว

@@wylierichardson-tu6zs I didn't write for a comic title at the time, but Roy and I co-wrote the introduction to a hardcover collection called ROY THOMAS PRESENTS CAPTAIN VIDEO that collected the entire six issue run of Fawcett's CAPTAIN VIDEO comic book. That was published by PS Artbooks I have written comic scripts for small press companies that went into development hell, but I still love the comics and continue to write about their history in magazines like BACK ISSUE and other PS Artbooks introductions. I'd still write comic scripts if given the chance and the publisher honored their contract with me, even if they paid me $1 to write "HULK SMASH". That's how much I love the medium.

@@wylierichardson-tu6zs I have written unpublished scripts for small press publishers a few years back. (I never got paid for those, which is why I left the publishers) However, Roy Thomas hired me initially back in 2012 or 2013 for an ALTER EGO article which evolved into the introduction for PS Artbooks' ROY THOMAS PRESENTS CAPTAIN VIDEO which collected the entire run of the 1950s CAPTAIN VIDEO comic book. I'd still love to write comics if someone pays me. I've had 27 pieces published in the TwoMorrows Publishing magazine BACK ISSUE since 2014 with another four coming out in 2024 and 2025. I'm also have some short stories coming soon, and I'm working on a novel I hope to get published.

On one hand some of my best years was collecting them fortnightly, really brought my passion for this hobby but some of them are showing their age now. Even on a rewatch very good recommendations here, even for a long old timer like me.😂.
For me number 10 is something I need to do. Branch out into smaller publishers. But then Marvel and DC always draw me back in with those pesky announcements. 2025 is a killer atm.😄 Don't get me wrong have a list like Department of truth , SIKTC, Reckless , Little monsters, Night of the ghoul etc. Part of the fun will be is finding a gem I love (Horror is my fav genre) but also a bit apprehensive on a blind buy, which is why I appreciate your reviews. Out of curiosity how do you find the lesser known books? Amazon?🙂
And 100% agree, you don't need loads of money to enjoy this hobby. In my experience, just change your mindset, research plenty and go for quality runs you know you will be proud to own. To me the format is secondary to the story( Absolute Batman Hush or Ultimate Spider-Man may have some strong words to say tho.😂). I mean I treasure my Scott Snyder Batman trades/std Hardcover more which I've read 8+ times , whereas Grant Morrison Bat omnis not even once all the way through. Hopefully that'll change on a re read.🙂
If you get the chance I'd like to see a review for Nice House on the Lake or Superman by Geoff Johns(either origin or new 52).🙂

    12. Keeping up with variants is a full-time job and very annoying.
    13. Save 25%-35% with subscription service
    14. a comic with bar code will show variant number and printing number on it
    15. Once you start, you'll keep wanting to collect more and more series, some of which you'll want to bail out on.

As far as I can tell, most mini-series advertise themselves as such (i.e. have labels like 'book two of four'). I dont think they are doing any kind of 'bait and switch' marketing. I agree with you about 'variant' covers, I think the solution for the average collector is simply to buy the one variant that most appeals to him / her.

Just because someone has sealed books on their shelves doesn’t mean that they are NOT in the hobby for the fun of it. I know numerous people who collect books and they previously bought the singles or read them digitally. They buy the collected editions because they really like the series and intend to read it down the line. I understand books could have damage you can’t see when sealed, but there was only one person I ever knew who had damage in a book from keeping it sealed. I believe it was the original Strangers In Paradise hardcover set. There was an issue with glue and pages were stuck and some ruined. I’ve had some books that had been sealed since around 2010 and when I opened them they were crisp and brand new. I’ve also known some people who buy a book and then change their mind soon afterward and decide to sell it. If they had opened it, the selling price would have been lower. However, I can see why people would want to take their books out of the seal upon receiving them regardless if they intend to read it right away or not. Whatever makes them feel good is all that matters.
