As is tradition with Pokemon games, I made a major error almost immediately. In every Pokemon game, your Pokemon learn moves mid battle. For some reason, Ember being learned in middle of the first battle I had in the game just blew out my remaining brain cells to a point where I forgot about something that's been in the games since the first one. Hell yeah.
Also I'm American, I just live in Germany because of my wife lol

My biggest problem with Pokemon Sword and Shield was the scale. Everything is made to look and feel gigantic. The sprawling hills, the wild area, the stadiums, you can even set up camp while traveling. But since it's still a 3-5 minute walk to the next town so everything feels close by, and the game uses real-time(or just event-based time) so camping doesn't feel like camping and more like having multiple short picnics in your backyard on the same day.
The wild area doesn't even feel like an actual wild area because it's clear where you can and cannot go, and the massive city walls are always visible. It's more like a big park.
It feels like they wanted to make a grand world without the effort of actually making it big

The basement contained a collapsing pathway that has lead to, surprisingly, a second Denny's. We have made camp in the subterranean parking lot, and plan to investigate tomorrow.
It's odd. People come and go to this mysterious place, yet all pretend as though they can't see us. They clearly do, as all seem to suddenly become fascinated by nearby scenery or the contents of their pocket as they near us. Perhaps the answers lie in our adventures tomorrow.

This game really showed the need for voice actors when you have a literal singer as a boss battle and crowds awkwardly cheering. Like just get the voice actors from the show its kinda crazy to think in a game with really not a lot of dialogue that they couldn't get voice actors. Just to find rare items and pokemon). Also I miss hidden legendary's which are not linked to the story and needed exploration to find. The game was way too easy. As you said gaining xp was laughable easy. My problem with the story is that it takes you too often at the hand. At nearly every town and at many routes there was a character from the story and a cutscene starts. It all felt like a playable anime for children. I'm in the same boat. I found it an incredibly bold choice for Salt to say that games primarily aimed at children who want to go on adventures with their animal friends break his immersion when they have the child characters in this childrens' fantasy go on adventures without adults stopping them. Like, you're already playing as child exploring an entire region inhabited by powerful wild monsters with no adult supervision, encouraged by multiple adults to do so, but children stopping evil plots without being told no by an adult is where he draws the line?
And i completely agree that Sword and Shield's story suffers from teasing exciting story elements and then preventing the character from taking part in anything exciting until the very end. Not only is it a jarring scenario by actively teasing excitement and then not delivering by telling you "don"t worry about it," it actively plays against the idea that your character is supposed to be the "new hero" of Galar by preventing you from doing anything worthy of the title and instead pushing you to focus on the gym challenge for personal glory.

They've been using the same models since XY, but the 3DS textures were low quality, so they update those, which probably only took a few minutes each considering a lot of Pokemon have relatively simple textures to begin with. This is why when playing the 3DS games on an emulator like Citra you see the high quality models with low quality pixelated textures. The only new models are the Gen 8 Pokemon, including the Gigantimax forms.

People want pokemon to literally be the most expensive RPG made. Baldurs Gate by larian studio has less unique models -because- implementing 300+ unqiue models with any amount of aesthetic consistancy is not gonna take a studio "a few minutes." You're asking for actual months to a year for that alone. I hate how pokemon fanboys live in a world where skyrim hasnt been republished fucking 7 times because of the amount of work it takes to release a new IP with all these demands met. Unless you're actually clamorig for Sun and Moon 2 and sun and moon 3 and sun and moon 4, where they could ACTUALLY flip assets with no work. It's like, how do you play any amount of sword and sheild and go "Hmm, this should've been a cheesy shitty asset flip, it would've been better." or "An open sourced project has made decent progress in updating ALREADY MADE IP, it must be the same as making a new game."

@@HopelessXzavier I never said SW/SH should have been an asset flip, the most expensive RPG ever made, or that making 300+ models took "a few minutes."
What I said was that they didn't recreate all of the Pokemon models from Gen 1-7, they simply updated the textures, which is what I said would have "only taken a few minutes each." Pokemon textures are relatively simple, mostly large blocks of color with some small details consisting of mostly a few lines, and then the eyes. They could either upscale the textures or just redraw over important parts like the eyes. Or, you know, since they reused the models, maybe they made high quality textures back during the 3DS games and just used compressed lower quality versions on those games to save on space, since it'd be ridiculous to use HD textures on the 3DS. Again, this is why on emulators people had higher quality models with low quality textures.
Other than that though, they have reused animations a lot. Most attacks consist of a simple jump and a PNG, and Hop reuses animations from Hau.
It's not like Pokemon fans can't have better standards. They're the highest grossing franchise with over a hundred BILLION dollars to their name. People weren't complaining about them reusing models, it was them reusing models while cutting out half of the Pokemon with the excuse of "we REMADE all of the models." There are other RPGs that can add a bunch of unique characters, voice acting, AND unique animations, yet Pokemon can't for some reason.
For instance, Xenoblade 2. There are TONS of Blades in that game, all with unique designs, personalities, animations, and fully voiced cutscenes. The difference between Xenoblade 2 and Pokemon? Among many other things, Xenoblade 2 actually took their time to make a good quality game and story. Pokemon churns out games every year or two, and it really shows. They use low quality assets and textures, they cut out an unnecessary amount of Pokemon, and the story might as well not be there at this point. If the Pokemon company actually cared about making good games, they could, but instead they keep pumping out garbage. There's been a large amount of fans for years who have wanted them to take their time making better games, but it's the loud groups who go "Give us a new gen," or "We want remakes" who push them to keep giving us what are quite frankly bad games.
Nobody wants these games to be "the most expensive RPG ever." Nobody is asking for a shitty asset flip. We just want actual good games. I don't care if they keep using the same models for the next 5+ years. The problem is that they keep lying, cutting back features and Pokemon, and giving us low quality games that aren't worth the $60, and especially not when they make us pay MORE money for an expansion pass for more Pokemon.
I mean hell, even something like Pokemon Masters has voice acting in it. A mobile game is doing more with the IP than the main series games. That's just sad.

Given the game’s massive flaws, I actually really like the concept of the Fairy gym. I like that the gym’s gimmick also blends into the battles, with quizzes that buff or debuff stats. The first couple questions are relatively easy, but the third one throws in a curveball to teach the player that some of these questions are gonna be bullshit. The gym leader’s questions are even more tricky, with the last one being impossible to get right. But why? Because fairies are tricksters who commit petty crimes, just to watch people get pissed. It all perfectly fits together and it’s everything I could have wanted in a fairy type gym.

As soon as I was working and had my own money, I bought both copies of a pokemon game to be able to trade with myself. I do not want to battle with 3 other strangers, but as you said the npcs are overall stupid and worthless for those fights. I find this even more annoying because those encounters are based on quite strict rules, like you said the fight ends after any one pokemon has fainted 4 times and you are generally just given ten rounds, then its over. With those shields and those limits I have had almost no chances to get those 5 Star raid Pokemon.

Not really a fond of the fact that they're just Digivolving into anime fighter characters rather than actual species either.
Dynamax introduces Gigantimax, which does at first seem to bias towards certain pokemon, many already popular, but when you actually look at it Gigantimax is a mixed bag because sometimes G-Max moves aren't as preferred for a situation as D-Max moves - Charizard is a good example of this. Even if we still incorrectly assumed that G-Max is preferable every single to D-Max species of pokemon can benefit from a D-max as opposed to just the few dozen pokemon there's mega stones for. Also just as a matter of personal taste but I prefer Gigantimax forms to Mega Evolutions aesthetically because rather than looking like edgelord anime fighters from a shonen like many of the megas do many of the Gigantimax forms look like an animal, but a titanic, ancient of that individual species. Gmax Lapras, Butterfree, Snorlax, Centiscorch, and Corviknight off the top of my head look like they could exist in the pokemon universe as lowercase L legendary, as kaijus that myths form about like how in the real world we have, for example, myths of giant snakes and lake creatures they might have myths of a giant Butterfree. I'm not going to defend all Gigantimax forms or denigrate all mega evolution forms (there are some fantastic ones among the cringe) but if I had to pick one and ditch the other I'm keeping Gigantimax without hesitation.

See, I feel like they could have actually explored that more - him slowly losing confidence more and more, and your character can actually choose to cheer him up or put him down, which can change the trajectory of his personal arc into the end game where he eventually decides to become a professor - either because he gives up pokemon battling entirely due to nobody believing in him, or because he decides to give it up because he feels like his talents lie elsewhere. That's asking a LOT from gamefreak though, even if all they would need is to change some dialogue and animations overall. The game would still be dogshit but it would make Hop sliiightly more compelling overall.

One thing I hated was that I had to hold myself back from one shotting every pokemon in sight, and even then it was still way too easy. You've probably heard it a thousand times but the ability to change the difficulty would be such a good addition to the game, that way you can still provide a challenge for the more experienced players and also have a fun game for kids new to the game. I've downloaded rom hacks for gen 3 -5 games that increase the difficulty of gym battles so that they actually have a team with 6 Pokemon with actually 4 moves that all work together with a strategy. It doesn't even seem like that much work for Gamefreak to do that.

Actually, it is incorrect that they had to remake the models from scratch. The 3DS games had framerate issues specifically because they made incredibly high poly models to future proof the Pokemon models to use in the future for more powerful hardware. These models have been used for things for Pokemon Go, Pokemon Masters, Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu, and I think even Pokken Tournament. At worst, they only had to make new texture for the models... Either way, if they did decide to remake the models from scratch, that sounds like a colossal waste of time and resources and made the 3DS games laggy for no reason OR they you know, were straight up lying. (Either way, neither is a good look.)

The wishing star/dynamax band thing has bugged me for a while and it's such a simple fix that it's actually kind of comical; make them a limited resource.
This would make the second Hop fight have a bit more meaning and foreshadowing as you're now battling for Leon's Band with the loser getting Sonia's, signaling their endorsement of the two of you as trainers, (this could also be where a technically meaningless outcome could be used to make the game harder, with Hop having a stronger team should you have his brother's band).
It would also make Bede's actions a bit more heinous and villainous, as he's now actively stealing them from other trainers, knocking them out of the competition as he goes, (a suggestion he could have received from Oleana). His later action to destroy a national monument to find just one more would also make a hell of a lot more sense as well due to there being fewer trainers to fight and the few remaining being quite tough.
This would also make Marnie and Piers make a bit more sense, with Piers' gym lacking the funding or sway for him to both give his sister his band to show endorsement and keep one for himself.
With them falling out of the sky and into your laps, being plentiful enough to be sold to and purchased by children, and ultimately not mattering at all in the long term except to make Rose look like the biggest idiot alive, everyone just comes out a bit worse because of it.

Just a comment about the fairy gym leader's nonsense trivia questions: they might be annoying, but it actually makes a lot of sense to me when you consider she's the Fairy-type gym leader. Fey in folklore are capricious and think in alien ways and are fond of unfair games played at the expense of others, so I thought it added a lot to her character to ask questions that you have no real way of knowing the answer to, or where the right answer is the opposite of what seems obvious like with her favorite color.

Imagine if this logic were in other games.
Phoenix Wright: "Attorney or no, you're just a rookie, best to leave Mia's case to Grossberg"
The original God of War: "Warrior or no, you're still mortal, best to leave Ares to Athena and pray she avenges you"
Kingdom Hearts: "Keyblade wielder or no, you're still just a kid, best to leave the Heartless to Leon"

I feel the same; the game wasn't horrible, because of the tried and true method of the game series, but it definitely could have had a great number of improvements. For the amount we paid for this game, it should have not been so poorly made. And I agree, this probably was a DS game that got ported over to the Switch. I am curious about your reaction to Legends Arceus. It was a decidedly surprising departure from the usual structure of the game series and was the most fun I've had in a pokemon game since Sun and Moon (yeah, I actually loved that game, despite its flaws).
