This game came out when I was 12 and I remember it being so goddamn strange. Turns out that assessment wasn't too far off from the truth.

the weirdest thing about the game is how your character's age is tied to his level. so by the end of the game he was a wrinkle-faced, white-haired old man (still built like a wrestler), but everyone else didn't age one bit.

    • @Fading_Skies
      @Fading_Skies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +643

It isn't entirely tied to your level. If you donate 1,000,000 to the temple of Avo, you get a youth potion to reduce your age while keeping all of your levels.

to be fair, it doesn't say that the hero of oakvale actually did it
it just says that its rumored to have happened shortly after or before the hero went to fight jack a second time
point being its still left ambiguous, and its possible someone else got tired of the guildmasters shit. Though they have LOTS of mentions of the sword of aeons as well.. though that could be just the avos tear (they look similar in shape) but the only thing going for it is really shape.
my guess is its the devs/writers way of trying to be like "this is most likely the canon options" without actually stating as such
also remember in fable theresea mentions multiple worlds and timelines, so its possible some weird multiverse shit is going on, which explains heros in fable 2, and fable 3 jespar even mentions how your father designed something to connect and communicate with these other worlds, with other heroes.

I mean, when you're young it's not really that you don't see story issues, it's more that you don't really care cause things are a decent time-waster. Fable always felt like a very simple, basic, don't-think-about-it-too-much story, but that was part of its charm, including your ability to do right and wrong. It's when we get older we naturally become more snobby and critical of things since we're no longer happy-go-lucky youths, and can't enjoy things as much.

I played Lost Chapters much later and genuinely felt like it was a part of the original game with how seem less it transitioned from the original story. A decade or so later and being an adult I got ahold of the Anniversary edition. I was so happy that the game still held up, with many quality of life changes that 8 year old me never noticed were a hassle.

Get your multiplier up really high say 120-130X then drink the elixer. The next time you visit the college to level up, you literally unlocked every skill in the game.
The trading system was also retarded... Sell all rubys, then buy all rubys. sell all buy all, sell all buy all. Literally make millions then donate millions at the church for a blessing of youth. Then donate even more millions at the church for the priest just to laugh at you as you realize you get nothing for it the second time... The priest just laughs and says the gods are fickle today. Buy all and sell all for unlimited gold.

I remember being too goddamned terrified to go into Darkwood when I was younger. It wasn't the area itself, although the creepiness didn't do anything to help, it was those bloody Balverine's. They came back in future games but they weren't nearly as annoying as they were in the original. In future games, you could stun-lock them and just kill them easily. They didn't get nearly as bad invincibility frames and were easy to avoid even with a young and not very tactical mind. But in this game, I mentally shat myself whenever they jumped in the air and would roll around like an idiot to avoid getting dropped on. They also never seemed to die to my master longsword which was really annoying too.
Mini rant aside, there's so much about this game that I haven't found in any other game no matter how much I look for it. Maybe it's because this was my first ever video game but there's just something about it I love and will never be replaced.

It *was* ahead of its time. I’d never played a game where every small decision I made had such an effect of the world around me. How I was perceived by NPCs, my appearance, what I had access to, the environment... pretty much all RPG games these days have the morality system that started with Fable. A lot of people blame the games for not being as interesting or good but fail to realize they are the reason why and have just grown out of the phase where they can truly enjoy playing. Yeah, Fable takes the older, Ancient Greek definition of “hero” as the norm- being an unusually powerful demigod of sorts who is destined for great, if not necessarily good things. I actually always found that idea quite interesting, because other games just wouldn’t use the word “hero” at all unless it was good stuff you were doing.
Also yes I think the Lost Chapter was originally meant to be for the vanilla game, since it was possible to bug your way to the Northern Wastes in the original XBox release from what I remember. No quests or anything, but the location is there.

He sold DLC such as a $77000 DLC and others, all because he said the content at the center of the cube is worth it and "would be life changing" ... Then a person finally got into the cube, and there was a video of Molyneux saying "we could have just given the winner a ton of money, or a car, but we will do something better, we will make the winner into a literal God" and then Molyneux did an advertisement for his upcoming super shitty mobile micro transaction game, and promising the winner that they would get to influence the game "like a God" and would get "a small portion of the revenue". So okay, the winner tried to contact Molyneux, and the team replied that he will get his prizes later. He kept mailing them once per month until they stopped replying. Two years later he went to the press to say he STILL had not received the prize. Molyneux promised via the press that he would take care of it. But he didn't. That was in 2015. He only did the title/ main theme, the rest was done by someone else. That iconic, floaty fantasy tune was not him. He did the actiony, dramaticish song that plays during major story cutscene and the title screen.

I really loved this game and even the follow up games. None of them could ever live up to the hype Peter Molyneux made about them but they really are just so memorable and charming. Still play through them every couple of years.

I haven't thought about Fable in forever, but this video brought a wave of memories flooding back. I was mostly a Nintendo kid when I was growing up, but I got an original Xbox in, like, 2008, and played a lot of those games a bit late. Fable blew my mind. There are so many standout moments that I remembered, and hearing that they were actually good is nice.

I just went back through all 3 and it was just as great as I remembered!

What made fable so great was the story (while having some big "holes") was something that hadn't been done in gaming yet. Showing your sister get taken, killing your family. Having to face her after shes been brainwashed by the bandits. It was a boundary games just didn't know they could cross yet.
