There's also that guy who flew past the skybox in Mario Galaxy. He continued on and on forever. The void of space. At some point the floating point errors distord Mario's model like a blackhole. Truly a strange sight. Another great case : Minecraft Bedrock. The world is near infinite but starts to break down (floating point errors) far before you reach the limit. Interesting case of the game breaking before the limit.
@@EmbersJournal i don't remember how it ends, but it starts WAY earlier, a few thousands blocks I think. First, standing on the edge of a block might no clip you out of the world, 2 times further, 1 row of block out of 2 will be not displayed, 2 times further the entites fall through the world, then jittering, and at some point there's no more collisions.
In live service games that have ever expanding maps with each update, I love trying to see what an area looks like before it was added it. See what kind of placeholder assets they used to fill the space, see what barriers are in place. And then compare it to what it’s like once the new area is released. It’s so cool to me to see the map’s progression like that. This video reminded me of that.
My favorite part of House of Leaves was finding out after I'd finished the book that the cover was . 75 inches shorter than the interior of the book, the same inconsistency found within the House

These days I've been home alone so I have the living room all to myself, I play youtube videos or music while I cook or clean but the tv speaker has this weird effect that gives voices some echo, that effect combines so well with the topic of the video that oh boi, watching this one and Loneliness in Games like that was such an experience
This is only sort of related to what you're talking about, as it is fully intentional, but Paper Lily has some dream sequences, and at one point you can walk out into a black void, and if you go far enough that you can't see any of the objects in the dream, you can no longer go back regardless of which way you walk, which eventually triggers a terrifying ending. I was just reminded of that when you talked about losing yourself in an endless void outside the map. It's kind of an interesting example of a sort of similar thing done intentionally.
It is absolutely incredible that this masterpiece has only 3k views. I mean this is worth at least a hundred thousands more of them. I mean look at this!

The Souls Series I think does map boundaries and barriers the best. The barriers all make sense within the game’s world and lore. A dying world obviously would have broken pathways or debris preventing travel in that direction. That, and it makes sense for there to be gaps the player character can’t fit in, or large chasms and distances the player character wouldn’t have any way of trespassing, thus making distant scenery inaccessible. It’s a very immersive and natural way of both showing other parts of the world to the player, yet blocking said parts off due to the restrictions within the game’s design and content. The souls series even has several areas that reflect an endless expanse beyond and separate from the rest of their worlds. The Abyss is one of them, sure, but Ash Lake, The Age of Ashes in Dark Souls 3, the scrapped Lake of Mud in Bloodborne, and the seemingly endless oceans surrounding The Lands Between, broken occasionally by indistinguishable landmasses only barely seen in the distance, all reflect the fact that the various worlds in the souls series are far more massive and unknown than the player can even comprehend. The player character, and every other being in the worlds they live in, are meant to stay within the laws and boundaries of that world. When someone breaks those laws and boundaries, as Gwyn and Marika did, the worlds fall apart, they die, they collapse in on themselves, becoming no more than an abyss, an expanse of emptiness.
The liminal space definition is incorrect. A liminal space is a space between A and B - a place used in travel but not stay - like a hallway, airport, or train station.
I just wanna say that model of Chewbacca isn’t a Easter egg, he is part of the mission, and many old games have the models needed in a level hidden outside the map, I can’t remember why this is, But pretty sure that Chewbacca wasn’t a Easter egg, but great video nonetheless

yeah it's really interesting to see the things left behind by the devs, we kinda get to see a part of their process of creating the world
