The False Nostalgia of Retro Games
Everyone has experienced nostalgia. It's a feeling deeply rooted in our memories, but what happens when those memories aren't our own? What happens when nostalgia is used against you? And, if we can't face our past, how can we face our future?

Life is Unfair - Arcane
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Wanted to try my hand at a video essay. Arcane really sparked that creative flare in me so let me know what you guys think :)
Wow, this video made me think of so many aspects of the games that i play but also, about how I live my life. Thank u so much for making this masterpiece 💕
POV you’re playing DBD and you’re the final survivor with the meter at the top shortening and you still need to open a gate
why in a video u make me feel that i want to play again botw, hollow night, dark souls 2, shadow of the colossus and more and more games
Minecraft with the music on can be an extremely lonely experience. Its the same as how id imagine the last remaining member of a species would feel as it lived out its days leading up to its eventual death and extinction.
the saddest death of a colossus is Gaius death, he was literally sleeping until wander arrived so he could resurrect her gal. gaius is still my favourite colossus to this day
LOZ: BOTW and TOTK give me that sense of loneliness, but it's honestly a good feeling. It's a pair of games I love and enjoy playing. I wish I could play them again, I miss Link and Zelda 💔
The bo6 clip 😭
Fallout 3 managed this, and that is why I think it is underrated.
amazing video
I remember once I was talking with my father, it was a long conversation, somehow we were talking about illness and he said something..." being sick is ok, you will come back as you were before, or you will die and rest from this world, but witnessing your self incapability of doing things you were the best at... is frustrating", at least you know your condition if you were sick, and that you will be better, but getting older is a boom that counts backwards and you never know from were it started, where it is now and if it is going to stope at the 0 and what will I see from here tell that day?
How the hell this person Doesn't have enough subscribers or massive views for such a Great Content !
33:31 reshiram is also my fav pokemon !!!!
What is the second game in the opening?
Why is Bros Voice SO Majestic, Nice Vid Man!
This video reminded me of when I started to play minecraft and i used to play on peaceful, and at the time there weren't that many passive mobs which made me feel very lonely and it almost gave me an eerie feeling
I think my favorite "The Player is the Monster" moment in recent memory has been Armored Core 6. Playing through the bad ending was brutal. You can carve your way through pretty much every named character throughout one playthrough. There was a moment in one mission, called "Intercept the Redguns," where my target, the leader of the enemy force, started talking me up to one guy who underestimated me. I'd already gotten the good ending, so I knew I only had a downward spiral from here, and hearing him warn his troops about how dangerous I was really sent it home. From your first moments, killing a cadet pilot who just wanted his own callsign, to the end when you're furiously carving through fleets of battleships yourself, you're everyone's worst fear in AC6. I really love that game. I might go home and kill Michigan and his Redguns again tonight.
Those videos make me so happy and like calm, its kind of poetic the way that those videos are written ember is the greatest of all time
Beautiful video dude, all I can think to say is thank you.
23:01 TIME FOR A STRETCH BREAK UWU
BotW always struck me as a bit sad in its storytelling. Here you are, the hero of Hyrule, sifting through the remains of a world you once knew, discovering bit by bit how much you have lost. Friends, mentors, family, love interests. All gone. All that is left is you, one of the few individuals that stands any chance of righting the wrongs that have been inflicted upon the kingdom. You have to cling to that determination and do what you can while shouldering the loss that you only got the chance to really experience as you recovered your memories. That's gotta be tough.
Bro this almost made me cry for some reason
genuinely one of the most fantastic videos I've seen on youtube in a long time. Keep up the great work Ember
PT brought the most fear from any game. The dreamyness of that hallway loop where you almost Get comfortable only to look above you and see an entity in the upper part of the house. Or turn around to go back to the bathroom …where you just came from only to be face to face with the woman. I couldn’t play it alone
Commenting to help the algo see this
Wow only 10 videos and already 16K subscribers. Your videos are incredible man. Keep up the good work, ill be waiting for new releases soon
Hell yeah! I love Dead Cells! Are family loves NES, SNES, SEGA and just the 80s and 90s era! Totally not because my parents were born in the late 70s - early 80s. You make awesome vids man! Keep it up! <3
Fromsoft captures loneliness completely for me
this was genuinely one of the best video essays I've seen on this site. you deserve so many more subs than just the one i can give you. keep up the amazing work
I want to share the moment I was most terrified in a boss fight. In the game Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the "monsters" you hunt down are more akin to huge animals who look like they belong in this fantasy world. And you have the duty of putting them in line, to balance the ecosystem, or to learn more about them so less drastic measures can be used. The mentality of this game feeds into that so much, that it actively rewards you for Capturing and Tranquilizing these animals more so than it would for just slaying them. The ultimate challenge that this game poses for most hunters, tasks you with fighting the dragon named "Fatalis" All this time, you've been fighting huge animals with grounded biological development and evolution of how they came to look and act the way they do. Their reactions against you are usually are of self-defense, or predation. How they built up the Fatalis fight, is so unlike the rest of the game. Instead of a vast living ecosystem, you now find yourself in a ruined castle of a long-since dead civilization. What plays differently in other encounters is that, you aren't walking into a monster's territory and hunting them down. Fatalis' entry feels like it sought you out, personally. The music, the dragon's "traditional" look and design feels so out of place of the rest of the franchise. It looks like a dragon from straight out of a fairy tale, and comparatively to everything you've seen before, otherworldly. Fatalis' theme music when you encounter it doesn't have the usual vibe of "You're fighting for your life, this is a great challenge". It feels more like "True despair and hopelessness" and nothing has ever made me feel like I'm staring down a deity before, and ever since that experience.
Is this my sign to play Hollow Knight. Its been sitting in my Steam library for like 4 months and I haven't played it.
This may be the common thread among some of my favorite games - hollow knight, rain world, no man's sky, subnautica, the talos principle...
Humans are monsters. Darth Vader. BB Hunter Doom Guy. You Kratos- (half-human) me The 1,000,0001 dude waching this video
Minecraft is a legendary game the end poem made many "happy, sad and to be loved" All at the price if nothing
You do a great job of switching between games and keeping a consistent narrative, inspiring stuff!
thing is you can be alone and not feel lonely. You can also feel lonely while having so many friends and family about
plz dont stop making these video essays, they're my fav to eat to
Maybe it's just me, but i don't believe somwthing has to be "evil" for us to consider it a monster. For example, we used to consider colossal squids monsters before we really understood them. But theyre not evil, theyre animals. Same goes for Sharks. Lots of people consider Sharks to be monsters. But theyre not evil, just predatory animals. Are they scary? HELL YEAH! But what predator isnt scary? Especially one able to eat us. Thats just my 2 cents though
Even though I don’t usually think of Minecraft as lonely, I can’t help but feel sad when I play a world for a while, it’s just me, all by myself, alone
i am currently playing horizon forbidden west and even though its got a completely different atmosphere than the games you talked about, the game just sucks me in completely. the combination of the beautiful world and those awesome sounds and soundtracks aswell as the story itself are just beautiful. i rather often just stop and look at the world, listen to the music and just think about how damn pretty it is :') great vid, thanks!
Half life was my first experience, somewhere middle i start feeling lonely , fighting hoards of mob, going through these paths , I always felt happy seen another human, specially the security guard who follows for little time in between😅
The best depictions of dead worlds I’ve played and seen are the Dark Souls Trilogy, and Elden Ring. I don’t think I need to explain why, nor do I need to explain why they’re often so lonesome.
14:42 There's a reason I was really attached with Mipha's storyline on my first playthrough. Other than her heartbreaking pining and sacrifice, her family's loss and the town's mourning, there are actual NPCs who KNEW Link. It made my adventure feel less lonely.
The Souls Series I think does map boundaries and barriers the best. The barriers all make sense within the game’s world and lore. A dying world obviously would have broken pathways or debris preventing travel in that direction. That, and it makes sense for there to be gaps the player character can’t fit in, or large chasms and distances the player character wouldn’t have any way of trespassing, thus making distant scenery inaccessible. It’s a very immersive and natural way of both showing other parts of the world to the player, yet blocking said parts off due to the restrictions within the game’s design and content. The souls series even has several areas that reflect an endless expanse beyond and separate from the rest of their worlds. The Abyss is one of them, sure, but Ash Lake, The Age of Ashes in Dark Souls 3, the scrapped Lake of Mud in Bloodborne, and the seemingly endless oceans surrounding The Lands Between, broken occasionally by indistinguishable landmasses only barely seen in the distance, all reflect the fact that the various worlds in the souls series are far more massive and unknown than the player can even comprehend. The player character, and every other being in the worlds they live in, are meant to stay within the laws and boundaries of that world. When someone breaks those laws and boundaries, as Gwyn and Marika did, the worlds fall apart, they die, they collapse in on themselves, becoming no more than an abyss, an expanse of emptiness.
The souls series has a atmosphere that I doubt will ever be matched by anything else. Each area in the series has its own sort of identity that’s gained by the various environmental factors and elements, from The Outpost Passage, to The Ashen Ruins of Leyndell, the lore, architecture, enemies, item placement, and information gained through item descriptions or dialogue all build an intricate, interwoven, and variable atmosphere that ranges from welcoming to terrifying, with many other extremes and types of atmospheres. It’s something that I doubt Nightreign will do nearly as well, due to how watered down and neutered it is compared to Elden Ring. And Elden Ring on its own isn’t as immersive as previous souls games, due to a perpetual presence of ambient or combat music, which does set the atmosphere more, sure, but it also ruins it to an extent. The graphics also aren’t the main reason why a game’s atmosphere is so good, it’s usually the art direction and sound design. The sound design of ER, however, is hindered by there always being a soundtrack playing.
thanks for the existencal crisis dude
The reason Gen Z is nostalgic for retro games from before they were born, is from a longing for the simplicity of pre-internet and social media days. Deep down everyone wants a more human connection that used to exist. Deep down we know human beings were never meant to have a constant dopamine drip. Deep down everyone knows social media is poison for the soul.
Bruh I haven’t watched a TH-cam video this good in so long
I am an introvert and was pretty used to loneliness. But, I still remember playing Genshin and feeling the sense of loneliness making me sad once. It was when I returned to Dragonspine. It reminded me of how when I was new, many top level players used to play with me, but they left the game later. Dragonspine doesn’t even have any npc, making it even lonelier. The serene and peaceful music was actually adding to it. A sense of nostalgia and loneliness hit me there, and I was just standing there at one of the places where me and those top players goofed around a lot. For the first time, I felt grateful that there were enemy mobs almost everywhere in that area.
Matthew Colville mentioned this once. Nostalgia for a time you weren't a part of...there should be a word for it.
