    This song always makes me cry. What an inspiration. I'm an Englishman too.
    The "Bradman never forgot it" line always makes my heart swell. When things aren't going your way, dig in, keep your chin up, never give in, and do it with grace and dignity just like Don Bradman did. A gentleman in every sense of the word.

      My old boss is married to an Aus women and showed me this song, said her father talked to him about Bradman and what he meant to Australians and Australia. Absolute legend and a wonderfully beautiful tune here obviously.
      Found out later that my Grandfather was named after Bradman. Born in 1932, Wiltshire UK... and he wasn’t even into Cricket.. his parents must have been, or I dunno , some of my great relatives did move to Aus around then, so maybe it was to do with that, but either way, had an influence on my great grandparents..
      But I’m back here for the umpteenth time to listen to the lyrics to write a song about my housemates cat, whom he brought back from Aus due to covid , couldn’t give the cat up in Aus cos he was worried it would be put down. So paid £4’000 to get him back summer 2020.. not a great time.
      But he’s here and he’s rather lovely and remarkable and unique in ways I can’t explain... (the cat... my mate is the same , known him all my life ) but this cat was in the bath the other day whilst I started filling it... and just stood in the water drinking it with wet feet..
      :)
      Anyway he is called Frank. Which is my other grandads name.
      Don and Frank. Two great Australian legends.
      He was more than just a Cat, Man
      He’s something like a guide..
      I’ll maybe comeback if I think of anymore, i should probably sleep as it’s 5 am here, Frank walked over my testicles and woke me up...
      Have a good one guys.
      Love ya all. X

      We still massively over-emphasise sporting achievements in terms of self-worth. It is certainly something, though, I don't think anyone else would understand except maybe New Zealand and South Africa.

    The smell of my fathers and grandfathers cricket gear that they had kept. The old gloves with the palms cut out. Old stumps, balls and gear in the old green cupboard in the shed. Opening the door to this cupboard, I was in awe as a young cricketer in the 80's. The First bat I used was a Bradman. My first time playing I wore a blue tracksuit because at the time my dad couldn't afford to buy me whites. But I had my Bradman bat and that's all I cared about.

    One of the most brilliant songs ever written. The lyric, the meter and flow, the conversational warmth of Kelly's vocal, and at 7 plus minutes, still not long enough.

      I agree Tez. Your description of the lyic, the metre etc. is absolutely a bulls eye description of the song, the recording and the performance. It would be on my Desert Island Disc selection that;s for sure. I've lost count of the number of times I've played it. What you could gave added is the montage of films and photos. You could not ask for a better "video" of the song.

    • @thedys70

      @@Khakhees Both songs brilliant tributes in their own right; one a deceased legend, and the other a living legend, at the times of their respective recordings.
      So to our next point of contention: fucking light plane crashes in the USA, and the number of rock stars that were taken from us!
      What if Buddy Holly lived? He had a tight band, and solid songwriting collaborators. They charted well in 1957, however failed to have a massive hit in 1958.
      Regardless, all bands toured solidly in those early days, so exposure to fans would have kept them popular and in the public eye.
      But the Crickets would have had to keep churning the new songs out and hopefully a couple of them would top the charts, in the years before Beatles and the Beach Boys effectively dominated the market. Still, I rate him just behind John Lennon, and Jim Croce, as the greatest losses to popular music in the 20th century.

    My late father died 1989 . He watched an aboriginal fast bowler Eddie Gilbert dismiss Bradman for a duck. Bradman ran off the field after his dismissal. Eddie Gilbert was rumored to be the fastest bowler of all time. He was eventually no balled out of the game and died in a chronic psychiatric hospital at Wolston Park Wacol in 1978. My father never was a great fan of Bradman . But Bradman represents a magnificent era in sport for ever gone.

    If you gave today's batsmen the type of bat Bradman used and played on the wickets he did and didn't have rope taking away 5 metres, I believe they would average about 10 to 20.

    • @Bee.nee343
      @Bee.nee343 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Kevin Thompson its true cricket today has an unfair advantage because all the facets of the games have been to score lots of runs in a hurry it's players like David warner who scored 100 in a session and I'm not saying that take no skill I'm saying it takes less skill then making 100 back then and the new generation is focused on these players and forgetting about who made the game the way it is. instead you have t20 where now every kid wants to smash every thing for the ropes. I saw a kid a while a go bat all game and make 3 and he was almost in tears because of it and I just believe if it was played like it was back then there would no more temper tantrums like Mitchell Starc and no more un sports manlike acts like complaining about LBWs back then if you were given out you walked no questions asked. And sorry if I went on and on but I feel like today's game is going down the toilet

    • @Soda_Dreams
      @Soda_Dreams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i was thinking something similar but watching the ashes changed my mind. so many young people! its like t20 needed to happen to just get people into cricket again.. and now theyve developed enough patience to watch a test! i hope at least. test cricket is the most rewarding to watch i think.. as long as you watch it all!!

    • @Soda_Dreams
      @Soda_Dreams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      im not a fan of the amount of technology either. the culture of the game has certainly changed. its amazing to think the batsman used to ask the fielder if he caught it!!

    • @kevinthompson5083
      @kevinthompson5083 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying to my message. I think your points are valid. I suppose what I was trying to say was today's players would be shocked by playing with bats that had a small sweet spot and having to bat on poorer wickets. They would've failed initially but of course they would eventually have evolved to the conditions. I would like to see modern players go up agsinst these conditions. One of my favourite memories of a test match is Bruce Laird taking on the West Indies on a sinking hot day on a cracking pitch and making a hundred. When hitting a four meant middling it and driving it through fielders, driving just to miss it. I miss those tough days. There is no doubt that Warner or Smith could do after they got used to the conditions.

    Thank you Paul for writing this amazing song and what a video to boot. Truly powerful words, music and visuals. Might I also point out that when a wicket was taken back then, you didn't see batsmen standing around or arguing.. they walked. You didn't see fielders running in and cheering and jumping all over each other.. they stayed in the field and clapped. Notice the Bobbies escorting Bradman through the crowd in England at 4:03.. all the poms are patting Don on the back because they admired and respected him as a player. Cricket was always a gentleman's game and now what has happened? Good sportmanship has almost become extinct while arrogance and showing off have become the norm. This is a great tribute to a by-gone era when Test players still had to work full-time to support themselves and their families; when it was a great honour but still a great sacrifice to represent your country as the players had to travel to England by ship and spent 6-8 months away from home just to play. Truly a humbler and simpler time. Long Live The Don.

    I love this song because it's about Bradman's grand moments and avoids the post playing era politics.
    It's nice to learn more about what a great batsman he was.

      I asked Paul to play it at a gig decades ago. He said "it's a great song isn't it". Huge smile on his face. He then added "probably not tonight, it kinda doesn't fit with the crowd" ????. He was gigging in a nightclub in Wagga.
