What a killer song. It has everything you could want in an epic song... instrumental virtuosity, amazing arrangement, deep lyrics, incredible rhythms, harmonies, and out of this world lead singer. A+++

The personalities here crack me up when they're listening. Only seen a few videos from these guys, but this is what it usually looks like to me. CoreyRoy: Gets into the song immediately and is having a good time throughout. Fenom202: Takes several seconds, but he gets into it and enjoys it. OlliWooDDA: His expression is like "I wonder what's on TV later? I could be doing something else right now." Can never tell if he enjoys the song until he talks afterwards. Sometimes he nods his head to the beat just a tiny bit. Gotta listen to the whole video to see if he liked it or not. It cracks me up. Rock on, gentlemen!
Wow, watching this I was thinking the same exact thing about 0lli -- can never the if he's feeling it or not -- I bet he'd be elite at Texas Hold-em 🤔 I've watched a few dozen of theirs I guess, and never thought of that til this one!
Written by guitarist Kerry Livgren (the blonde guitarist), the song became the band's first Top 40 hit in early 1977. Wikipedia; "Carry On Wayward Son" was written after the band had completed rehearsals. Livgren, who perceived the song as being "beamed down" to him in full, in 2004 stated: "It's an autobiographical song. Parallel to my musical career I've always been on a spiritual sojourn, looking for truth and meaning. It was a song of self-encouragement. I was telling myself to keep on looking and I would find what I sought." Livgren was born again on July 25, 1979, and since 1980 recorded primarily as a Christian rock artist.
Unofficial theme song for the tv show Supernatural; since that show this song is forever Sam and Dean‘s anthem in my mind. Carry on Winchester brothers!! Kansas actually showed up in person to play this song one year at Comic Con at the Supernatural fan panel with the two actors from the show, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. They played this song at the start of new seasons to review what happened last season or when one of the brothers faced something really terrible it’s a show about two brothers who kill demons and hunt down evil creatures and literally go to Hell in their quest to avenge their parents’ deaths by an evil demon.

Everything from their first album and up is playing regularly at my end. My biggest sorrow is that several members took the 'Reborn Christian' faith too far and eventually released too many bad albums. But lots of people mistook their positions as popular artists at the time to being able to convert fans to their own beliefs, so I'm not really holding it against them. I think Robbie got out in time, though. The fiddle player (and singer on this one), I was very saddened when I learned Robbie had eventually passed away!
I saw them in their hey day. They had a winged Pegasus, in laser lighting , flying above and across the audiences heads! Talk about an awesome light show? Their musicianship was perfection and it was a stellar night, indeed!
In 1973 I went to my first concert with my boyfriend. We saw Hawkwind, and Kansas was their backup band. Never followed Hawkwind after that, but I've been a Kansas fan ever since and have seen them here in Milwaukee many times. We were just at their 50th Anniversary tour show a year ago in July. Members have changed, but the music is still superb. ❤🎻RIP Robbie 🎻❤️
Anyone else remember the movie "Heroes"? 1977 movie with Henry Winkler, Sally Field and Harrison Ford...this song played at the end...powerful and haunting ending.
Carry On is much more typical sound for Kansas, multiple key changes, multiple instrumentation, true progressive rock, than the simple acoustic of Dust in the Wind.
I remenber this being played on our JUKEBOX 🎶 in our cafeteria in High school in Warrenton Oregon Back in 1978 🎸, what great times as a teen in the best decade EVER for great music the 70s Baby.
I was so happy this was blasting out of my radio when it first came out. Driving in the summer through the cornfields in my really really fast car. And then, they’d play Stevie Wonder and then some ELO and it made for the whole evening.
Kansas was the first Band that I got to see in 1974. The first album self titled is another great classic, and I did see them on the Leftoverture tour in 76. Been my favorite since.
I can't tell you how many of their concerts we attended since beginning with their first tour! Around 8 I guess! All before 1990! They are what they call a "Musician's Band", because even the greatest listen to their music! Not only do their songs rock but they also send a strong spiritual message! They are so tight and they blend instrumentation and time frame so seamlessly most people don't even notice. The first album was a little rough and not the best recording but the next 5 or 6 were great, loud, headphone music and featured Kerry Livgren. Those were the best of all their albums. Give yourself the time to sit back and listen to each album from beginning to end and you won't regret it! Peace! EZ✌
Classic tune right there. Super talented musicians. I remember when this song first came out on the radio. Couldn't get enough of it. Bought the album it was on, "Leftoverture" and was disappointed at first, cause most of the other songs sounded nothing like it. But it grew on me after a few listens and eventually became a favorite of mine.
One of the greatest prog rock artists of all time, Kansas had a consistent run of success throughout the 1970s. Three multi-platinum albums and four hit singles that decade, though, is only part of the story. Their blend of complex, symphonic arrangements (one of them even played the violin!), thought-provoking lyrics, muscular hard rock and a variety of other musical forms was particularly inventive. From intimidating prog rockers to accessible hitmakers, Kansas could certainly crank it out with the best of them but even then, it was always with an ambitious musicality that reached well beyond the riffs. - Loudersound (edited)
Great reaction guys! Such a tight song! I got to watch the singer grow up in small town local bands, but he really took off in high school when he came under the tutelage of the concert choir instructor Marvin Ginch at Central High in St. Joe, Mo.
Kerry studied every major religion, seeking an answer to it all, and he expressed that thru his music like no one ever has done before him. You do not listen to KANSAS, you experience them. Seeds of Change explains more in Kerry's book of same title. Peace.

Back in 1975. Saw in Witchita, Kansas with, Head East, and the headliner was, Joe Walsh. "Witchita" Walsh. Kansas harmony, the sound was incredible. Joe was rocking, hard.
I still have the original vinyl as well as many other Kansas vinyls from the day. They are America's progressive rock group. It is a shame they are not in Rock Hall of Fame. This song is a carry over from the album, Masque, where the writer (guitarist Kerry Livgren who also wrote Dust in the Wind) was searching his soul for meaning. "Leftoverture" makes more sense when hearing the album "Masque" first. The title is a play on words that actually means what's left over from the previous album.

Saw Kansas several times in seventies. Early stuff more Progressive Rock and later did get a more commercial sound but still good and brought them success. I am more partial to the early work. And writer Kerry Livgren who did become a Christian but had been searching prior and his lyrics often reflect that fact.
This is from the era of what was referred to as Rock Opera's. Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Queen, Yes will take you on musical journeys. As many other will as well. The Time was when FM radio ( stereo ) is beginning , and they could make 10 minute songs. Top 10 Pop at the time was mainly listen to on AM stations. The days of 8 tracks.
Neither Yes or Kansas ever did a "Rock Opera". Maybe you mean Concept Album? That was what Dark Side, WYWH, Animals and The Wall were. Genesis with The Lamb. Yes with Topographic Oceans etc.

Saw Kansas several times in seventies. Early stuff more Progressive Rock and later did get a more commercial sound but still good and brought them success. I am more partial to the early work. And writer Kerry Livgren who did become a Christian but had been searching prior and his lyrics often reflect that fact.
A perfect album.
Early progressive rock. Rock on!!!!
I've always loved this song. Have you guys ever added any of the songs that you review into your libraries after? You guys are great!
YOU MUST HEAR EARLY BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS "I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW" ITS FIRE AND I KNOW YOU'LL LOVE IT!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤓
Those vocals!!!!!
CHILD OF INNOCENCE is my pick.
Saw them at the Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl 1978
What a classic, I wonder how many speeding tickets this led to !
Every change was a unique lick. The song was complete licks
Great pick!
