    I was an HGV1 driver but now retired, even in retirement I still get calls to do jobs. The reason I won't do it is the hourly rate is the same as I was earning 10 years ago, not only that I'm retired! You're doing a great job Luke and a true trucker, many of todays youngsters want to be home every night and weekend. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

      I'm a 20 year old truck driver who used to do a lot of hauling to and from the Gothenburg harbor. Mostly tank containers, usually containing hydrogen peroxide, Monoethanolamine and a shit ton of other chemicals. Usually corrosive, flammable, oxidizing or just environmentally hazardous. Sometimes it was bulk containers filled with plastic pellets and those usually went to the UK. There were 2 places I went to to pick up and lift off the hydrogen peroxide tanks and that was in the combi terminal to load them onto the train so that they could later go to Russia, or in Gate 6, where they would usually be shipped off the the UK. The other tanks and containers were delivered to almost all the different ports in Gothenburg, be it Gate 3/4 (APM Terminals), Gate 5 (ElfCon container service/storage) or Gate 6 (Gothenburg RoRo Terminal).

    On the flip side of what you were saying about lorries taking ages to overtake you at 1mph faster...What really annoys me is when the truck being overtaken doesn't ease off a bit and let the other truck pass. I know you did ease off, but a lot of people don't.

    • @garyhayden1515

    When you get that tired you just have to sleep. I once rode a large motorbike across Spain into France from dawn to way past dusk and ended up pulling of the autoroutes into a large town. Sign language to a local biker I met at traffic lights where was a cheap hotel/motel? He led me to a place and I thanked him and he went on his way. I checked out the reception and while waiting to be served decided I could not be bothered to unload the bike and secure it up so I rode down back down to a main road, double lanes each way. Pulled off the road onto a parking layby area and put the bike on centre stand. Kept my lid (helmet on just in case?) feet up over handlebars. Head resting on luggage on rack at back of bike and had the best nights sleep I can remember. Woke up feeling refreshed and off I went to find a toilet, coffee and breakfast. It was the constantly having to find the right routes to ride that wore me out the most. I wish I had a taken a photo but easy to get a duplicate. Point being when you get that tired you can sleep anywhere and may not even need hours and hours. Just a few hours. Suzuki GSX 1400cc doubles as a comfortable bed...

    Had this happen to me a couple of times in Gothenburg where they'd put the tank-containers on the wrong way. One of those times I didn't really care since I was going to load it and it's both loaded and unloaded from the top, but then they told me I had to go in the other way to the loading area because the tank was on backwards. The walking tables were on both sides so I don't really know what the problem actually was and there was no bottom vent either. But it was quite easy to solve it.

Quick tip though if you're heading South from Yorkshire to the M5 I normally go down the A42 from the M1 just after East Midlands Airport, leading onto the M42 then going onto the M5 that way as I go to to Somerset a lot to see family, as far as i know there isn't a HGV limit. Recently got some chrome bull bars in the front and LED spot lights on the top so it’s a bit customised now for me by me. I’ve been at my firm for 3 years now and had my own cab after about 6 months. Maybe you should have a checklist before driving. Similar to what they do on airplanes.
    1. Is the container loaded the right way?
    Of course - different checklist depending on load/trailer type.

    Wales seems to have a lot of petrol stations called "Texaco" In Scotland, fuel prices where I stay is sitting at £1.16 yet you've got £1.45????

    • @malcolmyoung7866
      @malcolmyoung7866 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most major trunk road service stations(where trucks usually have to refuel) are more expensive than 'local' petrol stations. Motorway prices (M1 etc) are £1.50 a litre, fluctuating by a penny either side. Asda is £1.24 a litre ATM where I am but you wouldn't get a large vehicle in there...

    Mate try not to wind yourself up over things like this , that’s part of lorry drivers life as you know, your end up having a Heart-attack , no job is worth that , take it steady and stay safe

    Container work isn’t my favourite type of work, manly due to some of the container companies run you to the Max and more, it can be easy work but depending on who is planning you’re work there can be very little room for brakes delays so on. One of the reasons why I am doing tanker work and enjoying it.
    Good vid👍

    • @lukecinahgv
      @lukecinahgv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree mate. In terms of work, easy! But very long hours and worked to the max. Not a fan at all. I'm at Disneyland tomorrow for a week but got a feeling I'm back on it after my trip 😪

    So I'm a bit of a new fan and have been watching quite a few of your videos and it's me interested in the job itself 👍
    My only question is what is the actual pay like? You hear so much conflicting information about it being great/shit. Either way it's going to be better than what I earn now but actual knowledge from people in the industry would be a great help before I fork out for my licences and get shafted Haha! Cheers and keep up the great videos!

      I'm on a salary of £600 a week plus £25 a night that I sleep out. So this week for example I earned £675

    Hello Luke, I have watched few videos . Great job , really helpful.
    Can you please kindly answer the question I’m asking below.
    I’m an international student and I can work only 20 hours per week during term time and full time during vacation.
    I’m now thinking about getting hgv class 2 license .
    Do you think will I be able to find a job for part time? Do you think it is a bad investment since I can work only 20 hours per week, will I end up finding no job ?
    Please give me a reply
    Thank you

    • @lukecinahgv
      @lukecinahgv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're almost certainly struggle to find a permanent job with a company if you can only do 20 hours a week. Your best chance would be to go on agency as you can dictate when you want to work. Only negative side of that is that you're not guaranteed the work when you can work.

      I got one more question for you. As I was researching about this I found few things which I thought would be more better to find from trucker who is working at the moment . My question is , is the vibration on the steering high, Does it effect with blood flow to hands? ? Is the driver cabin have heat from engine when driving? Could you please share any health issues to be aware of in this job? It would be a great help if you could answer these questions , for future truckers
      Thank you

    Minute 59:26, did you blind side it on Luke or drove around straightened it and drove back? Why did you edit it out of interest?

    • @lukecinahgv
      @lukecinahgv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate. Abit of both. I approached from the left side and turned left to line up but didn't have enough room so ended up having to blind it in from around 45 degrees. Took about 3 or 4 attempts. I didn't edit it out, I simply forgot to press record on the camera before I started moving. Sorry bud

    Not sure i have ever had a container put on the wrong way , also not sure why you never spotted it comming down from a great height, not been into southampton for many years they used to use stranglers or have they gone onto high leval ones now ? Bit embarrising . Have the rules changed nowadays i did not see hard hats < allthough useless if a 40tn container drops on you, allthough it did happen in felexstowe many years ago > and why are you even moving with unsicured twistlocks. In my days it was container on - walk around trailor checking for damage - twisting locks as you progress - write seal number on scrap of paper the move off to check out. Sorry but that problem was self inflicted allthough i suspect the straddler driver was having a I will take the piss day joke on you. allways remember worse things happen at sea, keep trucking !

    27:48 Really annoys me when cars have to creep forward while a lorry is reversing, if Luke needed to pull forward to try again he would have moaned about reversing so why not just sit and wait!
