I really like how you’re able to separate AM2R and Samus Returns, I think they’re both pretty different and it seems like a lot of people can’t seem to do that.
Matthew Stevens Yeah, it still hurts me thinking about that, but the AM2R is still going strong and actually just recently released a new update, the next one (coming in like 2 1/2 years or longer) will apparently be a complete art overhaul. I think seeing stuff like that is what allows me to not hold any hard feelings
FireNinja606 Nah, go on r/AM2R, the community is still working on the game and putting out updates. Nintendo only attacked AM2R because it caught the eye of the mainstream, since it doesn’t have it anymore Nintendo hasn’t even bothered to try and stop any of the newer updates.
And I disagree with this notion. Both games have the same exact proposition: to be a remake of Metroid 2. It's only natural to compare them directly. And obviously, the fan game is superior in every way, which only makes nintendo looks really bad... They don't give a damn about Metroid and it shows
I'm sorry Nerrel; there are no unpopular opinions in this video, and this is not what I am subscribed for. Disliked and reported. Please try better next time.
@@Screamingreader He did compare them though... and showed the differences between them that are enough to change how each game plays so it makes sense
@@tomstonemale Well the recent remakes have all pretty much sucked ass. But the mainstream love pretty turds and half hearted attempts to please old schools
Well a year has passed and I finally got my own laptop and bought the game just in time on the last few hours of the summer steam sale. It was a really fun game and might even get me into the touhou series, I came for the metroidvanias but stayed for the boss battles
There is actually a free Shin Megami Tensei Metroidvania game made by the same people who did the Tohou game that released a few years ago that I enjoyed, if you are interested in checking that out. I believe it was called Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity Prologue (or something).
I doubled this, I think that game plays really well with managing the items as keys from tge genre, with also including the staple weakness system of the SMT series. Wish it was way longer though....
@@saedt I was looking forward to HK since I heard so much about how its a great game but I echo many of his thoughts regarding it, I enjoy parts of the game but in the end I'm not sure if i spent more time having fun or just being bored/frustrated I even did 100% on steel soul but I am conflicted about the game.
@@ImTakingYouToFlavorTown I've felt the same way since I first played it when it released. Hollow Knight is definitely a game I can appreciate, but it's not a game I will come to enjoy.
Hey Nerrel! Really cool that you included AM2R in here but if I'm being totally honest you messed up a few of your facts. The Galactic Federation logs were added by a non-official team after the DMCA, and in this video it sounds like you were blaming Doc for the somewhat cringy references. Doc hasn't done anything with AM2R since the DMCA so he shouldn't be faulted. The Samus sprites, while *based* on Zero Mission, are not mere edits or just a modification; they was a lot done from scratch with some things like the running animation fine-tuned to match the feel of the original. Many tilesets were definitely modified from ZM and Fusion though, so perhaps that part was just poorly contextually structured. Besides that great review, keep up the good work!
I don't think he's blaming anyone, but... I dunno, critiquing the game? As a game reviewer does? Making shit personal is the complete opposite anyone should ever do when it comes to critiquing works of any kind
@Sola If he's gonna critique the game he shouldn't critique parts that weren't part of the original creators game unless he's gonna specify it was made by a different team, or he should have just used the original creators version. That’s like reviewing a modded version of Skyrim and Blaming Bethesda for the bugs caused by the mods.
Dude, hearing you talk so passionately about Cave Story and games in general really reminds me why I love that game so damn much. I own Cave Story on nearly every platform its available on and it's easily one of the best games out there that everyone should play.
If you want another game from the Luna Nights devs, there's a freeware Shin Megami Tensei game titled "Synchronicity Prologue" starring Jack Frost and Pyro Jack. It's about the same length to 100% and you don't have to pay a cent for it. Make sure to find the translated version
Nerrel, I'm loving this series so far. I really hope it continues. Also, I'd be really interested to see La-Mulana and Rabi-Ribi show up in a future episode. Thanks so much for including Luna Nights! That game deserves a lot more attention than it gets.
Keep em coming Nerrel. And don’t be ashamed to have unpopular opinions. It keeps things fresh. Don’t let other’s insecurities keep you from sharing them.
I love the tubes in AM2R, not only because they lock together on the grid so they make sense geographically, but there ARE tubes that connect to the earlier Areas. The gold one on the far left in the tube room in the last area before the end is a tube straight to Area 1. The 2nd one from the right takes you to Area 3. The top one going sideways takes you to Area 4, and Area 4 has one that goes to Area 2 just seconds away from where it spits you out. It doesn't take you to the central blue area, where most power ups are lacking, because that area is a means of travel between areas in and of itself, and it helps you focus on exploration rather than bombing everywhere, so it's good the vast majority of the items are in the areas themselves and not so much this winding spine of the game map, though there are about 10 there if you include the last 3 on the path to the Omegas and Queen, which, if you counted it as its own Area then, gives it a relatively modest amount. I also like that they wait to give you access to the tubes until the last area because there's no real need to keep running back to earlier areas until you get late game power ups like the powerbomb and screw attack. That one tube you mention that does bring you back to an earlier spot at the game is to skip the manual travel back through the long path to the queen. To me it's really genius actually, especially since there is nothing for you before Area 1 to backtrack for: by your ship, where you see the first Alpha, etc. Definitely more well thought out than a generic warp system that will lead you to backtracking to places after you get a power up to find out you needed this other power up as well if you wanted to solve the puzzle. Castlevania games are notorious for that actually. The Metroid fights are awkward at first, until you find their rhythms, which I HAD to on the Fusion difficulty. The Zeta and Omega are better designed than the Alpha and Gamma in my opinion though, but every single one still makes me feel engaged and like they are a threat. They easily contrast every other enemy in the game in how you handle them, which is sadly not much the case for Samus Returns as tactics that work on just about every enemy also work on them too.
Somecallmejohnny, the gamingbrit, Shaymay also cover it. What alot of people aren't aware of, is that the game has been significantly updated despite Nintendo's intervention back in 2016.
Oh Cave Story, one of my favorite games of all time and I own every version of it including 3D, managed to get a physical version of a Switch port for around 15 bucks on sale and it's one of the coolest physical editions out there, it includes a soundtrack cd, instruction booklet/artbook and even a keychain. Glad to see that it received such a high score, it totally deserves it.
Oh touhou metroidvania... Exciting times Can't reccomend Bloodstained enough I enjoyed it that much and found NG+ trivialised hard difficulty so much I started a fresh game, it's literally all the best mechanics from every CV game combined
I'm watching this video and all of a sudden I see what's missing from most reviews on other channels. You manage to give us a real look at important details of the game without spoiling it, when many do the opposite. Like, I never knew there was a character customization system in Bloodstained. I didn't get a feel for the general campyness in other reviews.
Yes. Yes. Yes. I was tired of replaying all of your videos for the 5th time this week, just waiting for this to release. Thanks. You alongside Matthewmatosis are my favorite game analysis channels to watch.
I know most did not play Samus return with 3D, But that was probably the game that was the most enhanced visually by it. All of the background is actually layered and looks really cool.
For someone who has a similar distaste for Hollow Knight, and an even greater love of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Watching these reviews back to back is quite cathartic.
In AM2Rs defense with the soundtrack, any remix from Super is usually a very unique piece in its own right. Hydro Station is its own work of art even though it's just a remix of Upper Brinstar in Super. While Samus Returns only slightly updates the tracks. Magmoor Caverns in Samus Returns sounds like, well Magmoor caverns, which is just Lower Norfair from Super. The Tower in AM2R however, is a much more interesting and appropriate remix of that track given the context within the game. It's also worth mention that every fanfare theme in AM2R was specially remixed by DoctorM64, while Samus Returns uses the exact same themes from Prime. At least AM2R was only taking inspiration from Prime. In regards to each's new compositions I think AM2R takes advantage with the Distribution Center theme being one of DoctorM64s best pieces. Samus Returns has more original pieces but none of them stand out to me except the Chozo Laboratory theme. When it comes to remixes from Metroid 2 specifically I feel AM2R captured the intended tone and spirit the original was going for more. It's cool how Samus Returns uses almost the exact same ambience tracks as the original with all the cool beeps and boops intact, but AM2Rs ambient tracks instil a better feeling of isolation and dread which to me complements what the original was going for more. One final note, AM2R kept Arachnus's theme from Fusion for his fight in AM2R, while Samus Returns uses that theme for the Diggernaught instead which just baffles my mind.
As someone who has played a grand total of 2 main Touhou games and has read exactly too much fanfiction, I can tell you Luna Nights was never meant to be about the story. Knowing the background lore clarifies a few things and makes some foreshadowing more obvious, (The identity of the final boss being the biggest one) but it's not necessary to enjoy the game.
As a big metroid fan I have to say im glad someone else talks about how much of a masterpiece cave story is. I remember buying the full game on the wii after enjoying the demo, and its probably a big factor as to what led me to become a metroid fan
If you liked Luna Nights, give the Touhou franchise a look one day. Luna Nights is actually pretty in line with the canon lore and characters. The only difference is that the final boss does something plot-wise she's never done before, but given her character, most people would argue it's well in her ballpark.
I'm going to be 100% honest. I was *about* to type Cave Story wasn't a metroidvania, but I skipped to the Cave Story part and now I can watch the video in peace. Thank you for getting that out of the way right off the bat.
Glad to see you included touhou luna nights! Touhou is one of my favorite game series ever and explaining it would be tough for one comment. I highly suggest you check out the original games as they offer a lot imo despite being simple. Love your vids!
Explaining Touhou with a feature-length video would be hard enough, I'm pretty sure the character limit on YT comments makes it impossible to do via text.
K19 yeah not that simple but at the same time that simple. Each game focuses on its own incident and there are a good bit of them. Really not trying to explain everything here if your interested check out the wiki or play the games. Not trying to be hostile but the description in your first comment shows how little you know about it.
I want to comment so your channel and videos get more attention from the algorhythm, but at the same time... I have nothing much to say this time around... thank you still for making your videos, you are my favorite videogame youtuber, always a joy to listen to your insights.
Great video series, nice to get punchy reviews of games like this. Hope you cover the La-Mulana games, would love to hear how frustrating and tedious you found it.
I'll have you know that I DID buy Samus Returns, thank you very much. >C Actually I bought Bloodstained as well but have yet to get around to playing it. Not for any good reason; I just haven't.
Hollow knight is one of my favorite games, and this is one of my favorite channels. I have really enjoyed the way you voice your thoughts about these games, and can't wait for more!
Ok... I LOVE how you talk about cave story. It is by far one of my favorite games. I beat it on PC and then later bought it on my 3ds. Can't wait for you to talk about Hollow Knight!!. That one is my favorite game of ALL TIME!!
The AM2R section was a perfect reflection of my own thoughts on AM2R VS Samus Returns. Both are good to great games that have very different focuses on how they approach Metroid II. AM2R brings the game up to modern (at the time) standards and builds upon the original framework brilliantly, while Samus Returns takes the original scenario and builds a new Metroid game around it. Which one you prefer depends on what you're looking for - both do their job extremely well.
The answer to the "does this make sense if you're familiar with the touhou games" thing is..... It's a Touhou fan project, so even the stuff that is from the main games is probably changed up enough that other than the characters and the whole thing with a time stopping maid.... not really
Seeing all of these get reviewed, I only hope you'll take a look at La-Mulana. I think you'll hate it, but it's one of my favorite games! Hopefully the wonders of unemployment will keep these videos coming. Anyone who dislikes La-Mulana is playing the game wrong and has bad opinions
Counterpoint: The Djed Pillar/seals puzzle. Why LM2 would make mantras more useful and integrated with the design and then include ANOTHER bad scavenger hunt puzzle of ten different unconnected components is beyond me... I liked both games but do not feel bad in the slightest for looking up puzzle solutions.
Really hope you do La-Mulana next. It's easily my favorite Metroidvania ever made, simply because it approaches level design and progression so differently from any other (with the possible exception of the old MSX game Knightmare II: Maze of Galious, which La-Mulana was explicitly designed as a spiritual successor to.) I do have a feeling you'll really hate the game though. It's definitely _not_ nice to its players.
Oh god I love cave story so much. One of the soundtrack options that wasn't the original was amazing though. (Not the + soundtrack and not the original but a third option. I forgot the name.)
I love Bloodstained! It's the first Metroidvania I've ever played. I did make all the food items and upgraded most of the shards the first time through, as well as making most gear. It definitely added another five or ten hours onto my run. I'd say it added five or ten hours to the run. I think you are right that the grind is a bit too much. I love the game regardless though! I am watching these videos to try to find another game that makes me feel the same way. I tried Hollow Knight but it is kind of boring, even if it seems very well put together. I want a Bloodstained 2!
I enjoy all the continual trolling of Hollow Knight but you still gave it a fairly favourable review 7/10 is a good score, I personally would rate it higher (as someone who owns a Hollow Knight Mug), but you gave it a fair review and the game maybe is not for everyone! You've really inspired me to check out Cave Story though a game I seem to have been avoiding unconsciously for years! I will also say I think the Weapons/Magic system in Bloodstained is pretty much identical to Aria of Sorrow/ Dawn of Sorrow in the way that it works.
Nerrel can you also review, rate, and give me the gist of the following things I don't have the time/patience to point my eyeballs at? 1. All the other video games I've never played. 2. Wikipedia articles about video games I've never played and never will. 3. TH-cam comments. 4. Traffic signs. 5. Directions on my pill bottles. 6. All the sequels to the film _Tremors_ starring Kevin Bacon.
You’re missing one of the best Metroidvanias of all time... Toki Tori 2+. I kid, but it does have a unique distinction of being a metroidvania where the only way you’re limited in progress is how well you utilise the abilities given to you at the start of the game in regards to your environment. If you’re willing, I would recommend it.
I prefer shorter games if I have fun with them. I get tired easily if a game takes more than 8 hours and usually just wanna get to the next game in my backlog. Still, 60 is too much but hey, I paid 72 euros for Metroid Fusion and it takes under 2 hours to beat. The first time took me over 10 hours since I was just a stupid kid and tried to 100% on my own. I didn't even know you could shine spark.
To be fair you paid 60 for 2 games, not just the RE3 remake. In any case, I liked RE3, and I don't regret paying 60 for it. But I do wish they gave it more time.
Time is not really the ultimate equalizer tbh RE3 remake is mediocre by many reasons alongside with the short length. For example, recently the so infamous EA announced the "remaster" (many quotations) of Mass Effect, 10+ years old games + all the abusive DLC in one package... $60. And the fans embraced the idea, lol they think it's a "fair" price because these games combined will provide 100+ hours of gameplay. I think that's a ridiculous idea, more content/bloat ≠ quality. Mass Effect tells a decent space opera story, the conclusion is pretty bad tho... still, it could be a package of 3 perfect games, each one having 150 hours, etc.. it doesn't matter, $60 is just way too much for games that belong in the goddamn PS3 generation
My mario maker level is actually the pinnacle of the whole metroidvania genre. You must've forgotten to include it in this review, Be sure to put it in the next one.
I urge everyone to play Koumajou Densetsu 1 and 2. Your thumbnail just reminded me of those games, (guess you can download them anywherey they are free pc games?) some old friend gave them to me during my castlevania craze. I was skeptical at first (Touhou/Castlevania fan game) but it was crazy good. It's not a metroidvania tho, it's a mix between the older and the Sotn/Ds era games. The bosses are bullet hell style and it was really high quality in animation and gameplay.
Because he didn't mention it in the video: Do NOT play Cave Story 3D. It ruins the game's retro charm with hideous 3D models with textures that look worse than anything on the N64. Besides, why would you play the game on a 3DS in the year 2020?
I think it's DSiWare, but all of that is available on the eShop still. I think? Makes me sad, man. 3DS is on a timer just like the Wii was. I gotta homebrew a 3DS one of these days for when the shop shuts down, there are so many exclusive games that will be lost forever.
@Jeff Thurman Don't get me wrong, I love the 3DS. If mine didn't give up on me a few months ago, I'd still be playing on it primarily. Just not for Cave Story 3D
Toho is a long running series of bullet hell shooters from Japan. Luna Nights is one of many spinoff titles. It has a long history and way more lore than you'd expect from something like that. It has some standout music, and instead of the usual space ship you control a cute anime girl, and most of the bosses are also cute anime girls. It's hyper rainbow magical girl nonsense, and it's beautiful. However, it's also a bit of a rabbit hole. Don't go down it unless you're ready to not come back up for a while.
Is the La-Mulana series a possibility in the future instalments of your metroidvania reviews? Man, I wish it got more attention. Great video, by the way, love hearing your opinions on the subject.
This is my first time watching one of your videos. But I loved it. I had no idea there was a metroid 2 remake before the 3ds one I enjoyed so much. Bloodstained by far my favorite, but by watching these gave me much more to try. Great video!
When you have the fairy equiped in Bloodstained and you play the piano after awhile she sits on you're shoulder while singing a very charming japanese themed song
I liked Bloodstained because it felt like it took all of the good parts from SOTN and the other Igavanias that came after it, and combined them into one game. And then the new ideas were also a hit with me. I could never get into Guacamelee, but it's just not really my style for this kind of game.
I love metroidvanias, so naturally, I love this series. If you're taking any requests, I'd suggest La-Mulana, Dust: An Elysian Tale, Steamworld Dig, and, if you're interested in 3d metroidvanias, Supraland is an absolute hidden gem.

I'm sorry Nerrel; there are no unpopular opinions in this video, and this is not what I am subscribed for. Disliked and reported. Please try better next time.
I think that saying AM2R should not be compared to Samus Returns, and is not inherently better, is certainly unpopular.

SMT Synchronicity Prologue is fucking fire, can't recommend it enough. I've started fanboying over team ladybug after this game

Also doesn't the metroids' AI have tweaks depending on difficulty like common enemies?
@@RedstoNeman0 Yes sir, they're more aggressive if I remember correctly.
I don't think he's blaming anyone, but... I dunno, critiquing the game? As a game reviewer does? Making shit personal is the complete opposite anyone should ever do when it comes to critiquing works of any kind
@@Jamie-tx7pn The point is that some details aren't part of the original vision for the game

Really glad you're covering AM2R. I haven't seen too many people cover it, so it's really nice.

I wanna be that nerrel superfan when i grow up
In AM2Rs defense with the soundtrack, any remix from Super is usually a very unique piece in its own right.
You forgot to mention the seamless transitions between the songs making the areas more interconnected than what the visuals and map designs entails.
this is one of the best intros on youtube, and you can't change my mind
I was looking at Touhou Earlier today and this vid gave me the push to get it
You're here forever; there's no escape.

Nicholas Whaling YO IKR I love touhou music already but these remixes are on another level especially Marissa's theme.
Cave story is my favorite platformer of all time, you perfectly described my exact opinion of the game. thats one subscribe from me!
I think the crystal power ups in Bloodstained were closer or just plainly inspired by the soul system in Aria and Dawn of Sorrow
Thank you for recognizing how good the OG Cave Story soundtrack is.
YEEESSSSSSS! I was just wondering when your next upload would be. Thanks, Nerrel.
you've earned an extra 20 respect points for giving a spoiler skip that doesn't go straight to the end of the video.
If you liked Luna Nights, give the Touhou franchise a look one day. Luna Nights is actually pretty in line with the canon lore and characters. The only difference is that the final boss does something plot-wise she's never done before, but given her character, most people would argue it's well in her ballpark.
If you enjoy Bloodsteined, I really recommend the GBA and DS games especially Aria Of Sorrow and Order Of Eclesia

Reading this comment knowing how Nerrel feels about Hollow Knight hurts my very soul. Hahaha
It's a Touhou fan project, so even the stuff that is from the main games is probably changed up enough that other than the characters and the whole thing with a time stopping maid.... not really
You did make me want to buy it though, so perhaps I'll find out it makes more sense when I play it
That transition at 19:44 is one of the coolest things you've ever done, Nerrel.
Here’s wishing for LA-MULANA to appear in the next release. Those games deserve more exposure.
Really hope you do La-Mulana next. It's easily my favorite Metroidvania ever made, simply because it approaches level design and progression so differently from any other (with the possible exception of the old MSX game Knightmare II: Maze of Galious, which La-Mulana was explicitly designed as a spiritual successor to.)
I do have a feeling you'll really hate the game though. It's definitely _not_ nice to its players.

20$ Is too much for a game that you can finish under 5 hours
RE3 remake with 60$ price:Starts to sweat

You must've forgotten to include it in this review, Be sure to put it in the next one.
yeah honestly can't believe it wasn't included. Nerrel must be saving the best for last.
@K19 my B
Sorry but my Megaman Maker metroidvania is the true pinnacle just because it has Toad Man and Big Fish in it, doubt Mario Maker can beat it.
3DS is comfy and has Cave Story + available too.
@@Professor_Utonium_ Did not know Cave Story + was on 3DS. Neat! Also I very much agree, the 3DS is quite comfy.

Oh wow. It looks like you played the actual later updates of Am2R, the fan updates, wow!
The most impresive part of Luna night is that (if I remember correctly) it isn't even an official Spin-off, it's a fan game
Is the La-Mulana series a possibility in the future instalments of your metroidvania reviews? Man, I wish it got more attention. Great video, by the way, love hearing your opinions on the subject.
Valdis Story: Abyssal City is a true gem nobody knows about.
Ehhhh i liked it, but true gem?
This is my first time watching one of your videos. But I loved it. I had no idea there was a metroid 2 remake before the 3ds one I enjoyed so much. Bloodstained by far my favorite, but by watching these gave me much more to try. Great video!
The subweapon system is from Dawn/Aria of Sorrows, why'd you compare it to subweapons from SotN?
