- The magnificently voiced and beautiful Welsh Mezzo Soprano Katherine Jenkins performs with fellow Welsh behemoth of song, the baritone Bryn Terfel, CBE, to sing composer Karl Jenkins' new arrangement of the 14th Century Eucharistic hymn 'Ave Verum Corpus' ('Hail, true body'), at Bryn Terfel's Faenol Festival (Gŵyl y Faenol), Faenol Estate, north Wales, Friday 26th August 2005.

I'm no expert, but judging by some of the comments I read, I'd say thank god I'm not and it makes me wonder, how on earth anyone could enjoy any kind of music, when they're continually picking faults and makes me question their motives for doing so. I am enthralled with Bryn Terfel and can't get enough. I'm not familiar with Katherine Jenkins, but she looks beautiful and I enjoyed their voices together.
Exquisite ! As for all the stupid, petty comments, the only thing I read into this, apart from its superb quality, is the mutual respect and affection of the singers. Thank you both for one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
katherine's career has so far taken off, she is quite the money maker, and she has been all over the world. loved at home and at concerts worldwide, tell me then, all you critics, where has your career and your life taken you, oh I know, you tube.
I haven't heard all the songs she has sung, but of those I have heard, IMHO Cinema Paradiso is her best effort. Beautiful vibrato, glorious tonal quality and perfect cadence, it is a gem she has cut with Cinema Paradiso.
I had never heard of Katherine Jenkins until I discovered this video. She is indeed a beautiful woman with a dynamite voice to match.
She's the mezzo of the masses from Wales, my heritage also.

P.S. This was written for Terfel to perform at the Welsh music festival he hosts at his estate. I doubt that he is "hard up for money and that is why is is singing with her". She has classical credentials; she is no pop-to-opera wannabe. She dressed for the event, not just this piece. Can’t wait to perform this with soprano Megan Chenovick tomorrow…
This has become for me the favorite version of "Ave Verum Corpus". Mozart's is very special, yet, this is more pleasing to me.

Redburdz, the Latin lyrics are the same. It is a meditative Eucharistic hymn based on a poem derivied from a 14th-century manuscript from Abbey of Reichenau on Lk. Constance, but often attributed to any one of three popes. Besides Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Ave verum corpus (K. 618)[6], there are settings by William Byrd (considered one of his best works), Sir Edward Elgar, Franz Liszt , Camille Saint-Saëns and Alexandre Guilmant. What a joy this is to perform with my soprano duet partners.

I'm happily married for 35 years to a great woman but I admit to a crush on Jenkins. What does it? It is those slow motion, incomplete blinks of her eyes as if she is humble (despite her talent and beauty) to be singing this song. As a lyric tenor I submit that if you think she looks strange while singing its because she is using sound techniques of breathing, singing "in the mask", forming syllables well, staying relaxed. Her "ave" seemed a bit harsh, but that may be an affect of Welsh.

Byrn is a great example of a voice that falls between meaningful fach(s?). Here's a guy that won the Cardiff worlds with a simple execution of Non Piu Andrai, actually a comic bass piece. He had enough voice to carry it off well and def had the comic part, but his 2nd passagio @ D allows him to cross over to many heavy baritone pieces of Verdi, etc. He is a man without support from the operatic composers (look at the roles under the wiki fach page: nothing listed). What is really written for the bass-baritone other than G&S Ruddigore (please). He managed very well, with the spotlight of that Cardiff win to project himself into many productions and gain big popularity after finding confidence in success. I happen to be a singer of the same build, same voice. I had to take note of Byrn' success with the bass stuff as it wasn't intuitive, but the basis of the power in the voice, even for lighter baritones. I found that really trying to make it work, worked.

Trust me, you're not the only to cringe at Katherine Jenkins' voice.
I did when I first began to listen to her, but after a while it's one of those "I've grown accustomed to her... voice" kinda things and it begins to sound beautiful. It's hard at first, but I've grown to love her voice and how she sings. It's so close to baritone for a woman.
Katherine's a mezzo-soprano, and a mezzo is actually a female baritone!

P.S. I consider costume designers and seamstresses to be wizards and magicians of the first order. Point is, a degree is a helpful tool, not a pre-requisite. The samples on your channel page are exquisite. I will be singing the role of Parpignol in La Boheme in March. I'm on stage for what, 10 seconds? Now, there is a costume challenge!

It isn't a tiny Opera House with special reflective screens and the orchestra in a pit with instructions to mute their playing. Microphones were not used in opera for the same reason they were not used in theatre. The advent of wireless mikes has changed all that.
Actually Katherine is singing with bryn. It was his concert so he invited her to sing.

Agreed! We are aware of horrid attempts by opera singers at popular genre --- yet the opera afficionados clap themselves silly. No demands for credentials. I don't consider opera and classical the same thing. There are great sacred/oratorio singers that probably ought not do opera and vice versa. I don't consider myself among the top 50 tenors in my state. Yet after most performances, audiences say they wept at the emotion I conveyed and evoked in them. In the end, impact is what matters most.

@arpeggio1358: Re: Jenkins appeal, I noted her "looks" as in her eyes and way, not the look of her bosom. Groban is closer to a lyric baritone than a true tenor. Bocelli takes breaths in the middle of phrases. They both strain at high notes. But their overall package is inspiring. Likewise, Jenkins' persona projects humility, gratitude, repentance, patriotism, good humor, passion for the music. Look, you design apparel that MAY sparkle. But Jenkins makes it DO so. Stop sniping from off-stage.

Vocal music friends, sorry for overparticipating, here's my last word on this video: Forget what the performers look like, what they're wearing, the venue, and the orchestra. Close your eyes. Just listen with the mechanism of your hearing that connects with your soul, instead of just your critical ear (ultimately, how it moves you is all that counts). Be truthful. Isn't it some of the most beautiful three-and-a-half minutes of sound of your life in the last year? If so mission accomplished.
